  • I just acquired a Yamaha SU-10 Sampling Unit on a trip to Berlin recently. In no time I was banging beats on it. It has a very unique and fast workflow with barely any loading times and a delicious lo-fi crunchiness to it. The SU10 is going through the norns pedalboard script for added distortion and compression. I will be definitely be uploading more impromptu beats with it.

    Super tight! Unexpectedly good. How much of the sonic character comes from that norns thing?

      Thanks! I would say most of it is definitely from the SU! The crunchiness of the "long" format (3rd worse quality setting out of 4) goes very well with the guitar on this 70s Egyptian music sample. The norns distortion did help and the SU doesn't have a compressor so it definitely needs one to boost the volume without clipping. Obviously in this example the stereo image helps a lot to create this "big" feel. Check out the original sample by Omar Khorsid : ua-cam.com/video/uXAXvsh6S3k/v-deo.html

      @@DunderBlunder well done. I had an su700 for a while but found it too bulky and cumbersome, especially having an RS already. The smaller SUs have more appeal to me, especially paired with something modern like you do here.

    Just got one of these, how do I locate the sequencer?
    Ps dope beat

      Thanks! The sequencer is very basic. Just press the red "record" button and start mashing those buttons Rewind then play your recording. Check my other SU-10 video "Labala" to see how you can use the sequencer.

    What is the grey box to the right of the Yamaha? Sounds tight.

      Thanks! it's a monome norns, a fantastic open source musical computer with the best community. Here it's just doing a bit of distortion and compression.

    How many different tracks do u get to layer on the su10: how does the patterns work

    • @DunderBlunder
      @DunderBlunder  7 місяців тому

      Hi! It depends on the mode you're using but polyphony is very limited, I think max 4 mono tracks. The bad gear review covers this . The pattern recorder (if that's what you're referring to) is a basic as it gets. You get one take of a couple minutes, with no quantization. Check my other video on the SU called "Labala" where I'm playing with a recorded sequence, that'll give you an idea on how to work with the limiatations

    Is there anyway to overdub using this? I recently got a hold of one and there’s a lot about it that im confused about

    • @DunderBlunder
      @DunderBlunder  9 місяців тому

      Nah there isn't, no resampling, and you can use the internal sampler but you're still limited to 4 voice polyphony

      @@DunderBlunder ahhh that’s sucks but what can ya do, thanks for letting me know. Trying to making old school style hip hop with it and it’s been a long process so far hahaha think I need to get an upgrade with more capabilities

      @@skat3rboi613 You can definitely do old school hip hop stuff with it. Maybe paired with another sampler. The sound of the SU10 has that great old school crunchy sound that has its own character

      @@DunderBlunder yeah I do really like the super lo-fi sound of exl play but not being able to correctly adjust the sample with pitching and speed has really made it difficult is there not a way to overwrite the original sample using the scale function?
