I feel like the problem with BL3's Writing can be summed up with the idea that almost any line spoken by Traumatized Scientist with crippling Social Anxiety Dr. Patricia Tannis is completely interchangeable with almost any line spoken by Spastic Clingy always-seeking-approval Obnoxious Claptrap.
These characters (among many others) should be almost diametrically opposed in the way they approach any given scenario but the writing is such that effectively every character is the same.

I disagree mainly for pointless features like sliding and butt slamming (I don't care what 3 calls it, because it's a shitty version of the butt slam from pre sequel) and mayhem 4 inconsistency depending on your build and the stats for that map you can either have a map filled with near impossible enemies or have a map easier than mayhem 2&3

Pointless features doesn't detract from the fact that every other aspect of mechanical gameplay has been improved from gunplay to visuals (ledge grabbing was also very welcomed). As far as mayhem 4 being affected by builds, could you clarify? Is it the game populating the levels with weak enemies, or is it just game busting builds? Ah!! I thought it was just me who was getting tons of Legendaries in BL3. It has gotten to the point multiple times where I would get randomized Legendaries like crazy. Whereas in BL2 getting a Legendary was one of those experiences where you would fight to the death to nab before they would seemingly always fall through the ground or fly off the map's edge somehow, or otherwise mysteriously vanish. In Borderlands 3 many of the Legendaries I would get would not mesh well or at all with my Zane build. Though it would be nice to test out different Legendaries to see their various effects. In Borderlands 1, Pre-Sequel, and 2, I had to rely on SupMatto and some other UA-camrs to learn about such Legendaries due to them spawning so rarely. Because Legendaries are so commonplace compared to the previous games in BL3 they no longer have remotely the same "I GOTTA HAVE THAT LEGENDARY NOW!!!" mentality or feel. It is just "Oh. Wow. Another Legendary. Cool.". At least to me anyways.

Yep. I think the sound and visuals of that game fit together perfectly to give it an amazingly thick and eerie atmosphere.
And theres just something about that low poly pixelated look that makes it even more creepy because things are vague and your brain ends up filling in the details.
I actually played Quake 1 for the first time recently and it was surprising just how well it holds up compared to the later ones.
I honestly believe if it came out today as a new "retro style" indie game it would still end up at the top of the charts. ( though with some deserved criticism over the crappy "boss fights" )

    • @ShamusYoung
      @ShamusYoung  5 років тому +27

At the time Quake's brown-ness was okay with me. Before we had high-color rendering, it was important to build a color palette that focused on a narrow band of hues so you could spend your limited color space on varying brightness. Quake handled that really well. It was really the flood of brown shooters that landed about 10 years later that made me sick of MAXIMUM BROWN. (Even the original Borderlands suffered from this.)
More importantly, Quake still had FAST gameplay, which is what really mattered to me. It wasn't until the Doom3 / Rage era that their games felt ponderous and bullet-spongy.
So yeah, I'm cool with the early Quake titles.

While I really enjoyed recently replaying Doom 3, one has to admit that, if you want to have a good time, you can't go in with expectations of it being an id software fast-paced FPS. It's a great game (even if a lot of people like to dump on it after the fact), but it's a methodical horror shooter - it fills a different niche for a different audienc.
I was also lucky enough to play Doom 3 right after finishing the original Aliens versus Predator from 1999. Now THAT has you circle strafing faster than Usain Bolt, even as the marine, mowing down alien mobs in a second or faster, or kiting them in melee as the predator. Add to that the labirinthine level design befitting Quake or Doom... id fans should definitely try it if they haven't already.

A lot of people are saying the writing in BL3 is insanely cringeworthy, but I don't remember 2 exactly being the Planescape: Torment of first-person looter-shooters by any stretch of the imagination, so it's hard to say if there's actually an appreciable difference in writing quality and not just that the audience has grown out of it

Actually, the writing and story is actually very, very poor, at least from what I heard. Many people like borderlands 2 for it’s writing, yes it is outdated and has problems, but it’s story was still cohesive and still made sense. However, the problem with borderlands 3 is that it ends up making a mockery of the previous chars, and it gets annoying to sit there and actually take it seriously, as you’d think it is some kind of joke, but it’s not. At least in 2, you can tell when it was a joke or not.

Wow! This is exactly what I always wanted to know from a BL3 review. Thank you.
And although you criticise the lootsystem to have gotten worse, as you describe it, it sounds exactly like what I had hoped for it to be, because IMO the BL2 loot and levelcapacity of any gun were abysmal. In BL2 all gear was bad and not even praying to rng-sus would help make it any better. That sucked so much ass for me and my pal who loved the original, since 2 had altered the original formula the exact oposite direction as you say 3 did over 2.
I've written an essay about why it is, that some prefer BL 1 over 2, but in short: We get our dopamine from different places. You get it from the challenge and effort you take on for a reward, and I get it from actually getting stuff and being able to mow down stuff casually. And I would guess that's the answer to why they made that change, because they listened to the fans of the original aswell and wanted their money too. Guess I'll have to check out 3 after all.
Thumbs up for the video, but thumbs down for not sharing my opinion ;)

I agree with the loot system being slightly off, I think there are too many enemies in the game that drop legendaries at decent rates.
My biggest issue with BL3 though is undoubtably how absolutely god awful the UI design is.
The menus don't provide enough information, scrolling through them is tedious and THEY'RE SO LAGGY, especially in multiplayer. My friends and I haven't finished our co-op playthrough because it takes so long to do inventory management that we've put it off until it gets patched. Idk if this is a PS4 issue only but I'm honestly appalled at how poorly optimized the menu is. The loot changes exacerbate this problem because you're going to spend more time comparing stats and switching guns in the BL3 loot system.

It will be interesting to see how other looty shooties respond to this change.

I think with borderlands 3 they focused on manufacturers and their different styles. Thus the rarity is not that huge of a deal. But the make of the gun is the huge deal and what shows the good and not so good (depends on how you play your character). Like most moze players are using high mag weapons or those with splash damage. So they'll be looking for torgue and vladolf. While most Zane players will look for accuracy and getting that sweet crit spot, therefore Dahl and atlas weapons are useful for that case. Maliwan and hypyrion are like white weapons. I was doing 115 base damage with 136 fire damage (6% chance, but still decent damage). I was finding rare and epics that were 136 base damage (no elemental), but were 2+ bullets. In the early levels I found these "better" weapons draining my bullets faster with slightly(?) faster kills. I started looking at commons more, JUST because of the non-bullet drain. All of the laser weapons were disappointing, and the grinder didn’t help enough. Mostly, the writing was a let down. Prequels are always a bad idea because whatever backstory the writers come up with for the awesome, legendary, iconic villain is never as amazing as your head canon. And the gender politics were kind of bad. It rocketed past BL’s usual feminist vibe into female fetishism. Gender equality doesn’t mean all the guys are evil or stupid, and all the women are perfectly justified in whatever evil, trite, or insane things they do.

See what I remember from playing BL2 was that game was just this massive struggle to find a good enough weapon, and the game leaned in REALLY heavily on the "worsen reload time, make the gun require 2 ammo to fire 1 shot" way to balance guns. And then the vending machines didn't scale so if you leveled up twice suddenly you're less powerful than before to a degree where enemies are bullet sponges and the vending machines aren't leveling with you so you have to muddle through with what you have in order to find a usable gun. I beat the final boss of the game in BL2 and after I did I had to dump my legendaries, dump my entire arsenal and try and cobble together a garbage tier loadout from trash quality items because the vending machine in true vault hunter mode already had weapons that did massive amounts more damage than my current gear even though they were white quality.
On top of that in BL2 every weapon was boring as HELL, you couldn't get anything interesting out of the system because it was locked down, it wasn't like a white would EVER be worth looking at. A hulk from torgue would generally ALWAYS have 13 shots and if it could have more it's generally only going to have like 2 more, it's going to have a reload speed that makes you cry and it's going to cost 3 ammo to shoot. In BL2 every weapon below purple quality was a slight stat change but their ROF, Reload Speed, and even their mag size was generally the same. It completely killed the gameplay of BL2 for me because nothing interesting could happen with guns below a certain rarity.

I noticed this as well. BL2 increased the number of variables equipment could have but in my opinion it just tended to mean that it was far more difficult to find upgrades to what you had and the player was regularly having to change to equipment they weren't necessarily familiar with unless they were willing to go several level between upgrades. BL2 was far more of a "play this game with friends" compared to the original.

There's such an easy fix for this: have a 'switch to random weapon in your inventory' button, then a button that marks whichever gun you're using as trash and another to mark is as a favourite. Trash weapons aren't switched to randomly again and are auto-sold at a trader when in town, and favourites are only switched to randomly again only after you've marked the rest of your guns as either trash or favourite. Less time fiddling in menus, much easier time seperating the wheat from the chaff.

    • @mikfhan
      @mikfhan 4 роки тому

Yeah, the favorite/trash marks currently there require going into inventory. In general I'd like an auto loot filter you can tailor to your character build (like pure damage max priority, elemental damage minimum, etc) where better guns are auto pickup and the rest you can fetch from the loot dispenser back in base. The current item value score means nothing and is a poor indication of the item's worth compared to your current weapon and build.

The loot system is right on the nose. What you also didn't mention is that loot in Borderlands 3 are about 4-5 times more common than in the previous games. So not only do you have to test out every single weapon because you can't rely on stats, there are not 5 times more of them to go through. It just felt like slug, and I probably ended up selling most of my good loot because I honestly just couldn't be arsed to sift through them all.

i think the weapon rarity and the “every gun is completely randomly generated” features are at war in borderlands 3. legendary guns have quite a few fixed parts that aren’t always as interesting as the random, more common parts on non-legendary guns. for example, blue and purple guns with alien barrels always have some wild effect that you just can’t get on a legendary gun.
overall i think the loot is “weird” because of a feature that’s always been in the series working.... a little too well for some people who are more trained by the diablo-style color rarity system

    • @NomoregoodnamesD8
      @NomoregoodnamesD8 4 роки тому +1

unlike the other games, BL1's item rarities actually informed the quality of parts on the weapon. Even legendaries had a separate tier when they were paired with a good barrel or magazine.
The reason for the fixed parts on legendaries is to reduce the grind in farming the "best" version of that legendary. This is especially helpful when certain parts or accessories can make-or-break the item.

  • @transparentblue
    @transparentblue Рік тому

The gear scaling thing was already inherited from BL2 which flattened the power scaling of rarer parts a lot and also added the godawful level scaling system.
I've always thought BL2 as being balanced like a near launch P2W MMO, except you cannot P2W but at least the ridiculously overpowered builds and exploits don't tend to end up patched.

I haven't played Borderlands 3 yet but I'll have to disagree with you on the loot system. One of my main issues with Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel was the low legendary drop rate. When playing the original Borderlands I was always excited to open a chest or check out a vending machine because it always felt like you had a chance at finding a legendary. In Borderlands 2 I never had the same excitement because you always seem to get the same pile of useless whites and greens.

HEAR HEAR!!! I completely agree about the loot. It is SO strange that this has happened. Don’t get me wrong, there were a few gimmicky orange/purple rarity weapons in BL2, but it seems like there are a LOT more in BL3. A pistol that shoots bouncing fireballs? There are way too many quest rewards, even side quest rewards that are legendary weapons. Once you get into Mayhem, you can set it on 3 or 4, and just go open chests.....and one can easily farm twenty legendary weapons in under an hour. Or just go into the slaughterdomes on Mayhem 3 or 4, and enemies drop legendaries left and right. They have now patched dedicated drops for certain weapons/items with specific bosses/mini-bosses which is fine. Still, it just feels off.
I completely agree, that BL3 just makes me miss BL2. Other than sliding and climbing......I fail to see anything that is better about BL3. Maybe the music?
I have had so many problems with the game crashing, the same soft locks at the same spots on the game, over and over again. This game is horrendously optimized on ALL systems. I went back and played BL2 on console, and 60fps feels so amazing. BL3 struggles to stay at 30fps if you’re doing anything other than standing still.
The story......my god, where to even begin? BL2 was clever, whimsical, and never felt like it was trying to be funny, but still was at times. BL3 feels like they forced the comedic angle at times, and it usually falls flat. There are some times I LOL’d, but more times than not, I cringed.
The message from the devs is clear. There is only one male playable character and he is by far the weakest. Every single male NPC is either a weakling or an idiot. Vaughn is a delusional idiot. Troy is referred to as a leech, being dominated by his sister. Hammerlock and Jakobs are gay.....why? They couldn’t have been best friends, or grew up together? Hammerlock is afraid of his sister. Rhys is an insecure weakling who for some reason is CEO of a weapons corporation. Katagawa Jr is also gay, and a psychopath who murders his whole family.
The most obnoxious character in the game, Ava.....who gets fan favorite (my personal all time fave vault hunter, Maya) killed.....is suddenly a hero for doing absolutely nothing?
I’m completely fine with the more inclusive angle. However, I don’t think its beneficial or healthy for the pendulum to swing back entirely the other direction.
The story ends with Lilith, Tannis, and Ava pondering what to do. Whichever vault hunter you were....despite just saving the universe....are completely left out of the ending. That ending credits song was one of the most cringey moments in gaming history for me. And I LOVE Lilith.....she was my fave from BL1.
There are just so many mis-steps here. I hope the DLC rescues the situation, but I doubt it. On top of that, Gearbox is in denial. The head writer on podcast, when confronted about universal hate for Ava....made the claim that only players who do Ava’s “side questS” will like the character. There is only ONE side quest, and its terrible, rehashing an area we just completed, while listening to her groan. Then he said Ava will be featured heavily in DLC. I hope she turns bad and is final boss so we can shoot her in the face.

I've heard no one talk about the final boss battle. I beat tyreen in one try, on normal mode, without being even bear max level. I still had tons of side quests to do, and I beat her with ease. This was the greatest disappointment in the game. Plus, most of the legendaries are trash. I use 2 legendaries in my current loadout, a class mod, and a relic. All of the other legendaries I've found suck total ass.

I had Borderlands 3 on release so I remember that game had some issues with optimalizations. But after 2 or 3 patches I completely forgot about. Nowadays when most major developers fucks with gamers and rip them on every step I really wasn't that much concern when the game turn out to be an old school gaming jewel. And from the Legendaries I did get in my own BL3 playthrough, (I'll admit, I think I got way more than the game should be giving out.) I would not say they all felt the same or meh. As someone who's spent less than 10 hours with the game I'm enjoying the loot system, my problem with previous borderlands games was that my friend would farm for hours and then have gear that way outclassed mine making me a spectator to pretty much every fight. However in this game I use the compare feature so often that it feels like it should be included rather than the old games where it was just kind of neat. The system does get annoying though when I have 2 guns with similar stats but one has say...better accuracy while the other has a bigger magazine so I test both but I can see the flaws in it. I'll probably update this comment after some more time spent with the game.

I haven't tried BL3 (or Presequel) as I felt I was having too much difficulty with the loot system in 2 that I stopped playing halfway through New Game+ with my main and then halfway through the regular game with a second character. The problems you mention in 3 with the loot system I noticed in 2. I'd go levels between finding upgrades of what I had. Heck I remember being happy when I hit level 35 as it meant I could buy level 35 loot from the DLC vending machines, which was all better than the level 29-32 equipment I'd found (a blue level 29 pistol with 3000% damage on it was still my best weapon even when I stopped around level 45). I had other issues with BL2, mostly that it felt far grindier than the first BL and I really was tired of fighting Hyperion long before beating the game.

    Worst things:
    1) terrible performance hiccups even with good hardware, new drivers, many many setting changes and hints on the internet for all those who had the problem. I don't if they fixed it by now, I have long time since I played this game.
    2) something is not appealing to me with the story or the main bad guys. Don't know what. There are some nice moments later with the story of the Jacobs corpororation, meeting the first vault hunter, maybe some alien lore.
Other wise the gameplay is similarly good, I do like the slide and climbing, someone did something really good with the sound design (I don't know why the gun sounds are so great and diverse, I will sometimes play with an average weapon just because of how it sounds), didn't notice the problem you did with loot imbalance. More nostalgic for BL2 and even BL1, after few sequels every game feels the same, like they milk what's left of it (and thankfully BL3 wasn't that bad, but it's something we've seen so far and couldn't in my opinion beat the epicness of BL2)

Green and white are both trash that are really just there so you have a starting weapon and to sell in the early game for money. Your scale is a bit off and I'd knock about half that green bar off. Blue, Purple, and Orange is spot on though. I have yet to find a green weapon that can compete with any of the top three tiers unless it was several levels higher.
The issue with the "score" is that it factors in so much that isn't useful. Higher scores usually mean more modifiers, in addition to pretty much factoring in every stat into one score.
The issue is that it includes a lot of useless noise. Some guns only have buffs that are only useful for specific characters with specific builds, or include useless stats that don't really impact the performance of a weapon with a particular character's buffs.
A high score has nothing to do with DPS, though that does seem to be factored in, it's the total amount of everything that it does. Even if much if it is completely useless and has no relevant impact on your character and/or build.

I still haven't completed the game but I have difficulties finding the same problems you find with the game, except for the scoring system not being reliable.
    1) Drops were increased, yes, BUT drop rates in B2 and BTpS could be very stingy in solo play UNLESS you activated the "offline" option in the main menu (network settings) and did only the quests that were on your level to improve the drop rates of high quality items. That way you could have good gear that was on your level. If anything the biggest problem with the weapon levels in B2, was how massive the gap in stats between 2 of the same type of weapons was, even if they had only 1 level of difference between the two.
    2) Complaining about having to tests weapons to see if they work with your play-style (being that it is a good piece of for build) it's like you were complaining of needing to play the game in order to beat. Testing gear to see if it fits the build you are making is kind of the main thing you do in a game that relies on randomly generated loot.
    3) I must disagree with your take in the story. Anthony Burch filled the dialogues with an excessive amount of jokes placed at inappropriate moments that made them feel forced half the time. The whole dystopian future setting sort of justified how ridiculous can many things be, but the many inconsistencies in tone had you tracking a guy for Marcus just because he gave him 9 $ extra bucks, right after the death of a main character ( which was also a very stupid cutscenes similar to the one you criticized in your spiderman video). The world building was still there, but it was buried under a mountain of the previously mentioned jokes and dialogues. In BF3 case, the world building seem to have been more properly integrated into the main plot and the side quests, and the fact that your enemies have tons of young people (possibly Pandora's millennials) led by a pair of sociopathic millennials more or less influenced by guys like Handsome Jack and the previous generation of vault hunters, which leads me to my next point (albeit more aimed at the general public rather than you)
    5) Vault hunters are immoral killing machines that are used by corporations and powerful people to influence people, groups, areas or even planets. They can look heroic at times, but most times, they are murdering absurd amounts of people just because they are getting paid for it, or simply to steal better pieces of gear. Almost all of their engagements are morally muddy at best (given that those soldiers and workers you are killing were simply doing their job.

personally, the 'traditional' Diablo style loot + levels actually frustrates me far more than it entertains me. there's cool stuff and i can try mixing this and that to do wacky things except.... none of that will matter for the first like 50,60,100,200 hours of play.
so to me it means i have potentially 100+ hrs of CHORES to do by filling some lame uninteresting XP bar before i can finally get to the fun part of the game.
so i then finally reach the 'level cap', and now i can start trying wacky gear because it'll actually matter whether i try something wacky now, largely because it won't suddenly become irrelevant 5hrs from now.
that doesn't mean that i can't enjoy narrative at the start though, and then in these games the narrative is what carries the game for me for the first __ hours.
so in short, for these types of games, to me frankly the loot aspect is one of the most boring things imaginable right up until i hit that 'level cap' and then that part can become fun and i'm excited to try weird things.
i guess i'm kinda just saying that i hate XP bars and i definitely do. in 99% of games, XP bars feel like a way overused, tired old holdover from the 90's that most games use as a time filler to make it take longer for you to play the game. so few games make XP bars feel interesting and natural, the rest use them as chores.

even in BL2 rarity has only little to do with how good a gun is. Sure, higher rarity guns gain a small damage and magazine size boost, but nothing out of the ordinary.
The part system in BL2 pushes even white guns with good barrels, stocks, or grips above blue or purple guns with bad parts. BL2's item rarity in fact is a randomly generated part and has nothing to do with the rest of the gun (Although some parts will only appear on green or higher rarity guns).
Contrasted with BL1, the part combination as a whole gives a gun its rarity. Purple guns flat-out have better parts than blue ones. There are even two tiers of legendaries: ones with bad parts (light orange) and ones with good parts (dark orange).

Honestly Anthony Burch gone is a plus for me, I hated his/her/it's/their writing, ReSPeCtT WAMen, and everybody being bisexual, gay and shit I couldn't roll my eyes more into my skull 🙄

Not quite true, you do need to field test every *type* of gun, but once you do any weapon with the same base name handles the same way in regards to things like projectile speed and other unlisted statistics. And we've had to test unique weapon effects to see if they fit with our build since Borderlands 1

    this is whole genre-level wrong
not applicable in so many games
solid 1 magic tier is often much stronger than last tier drop of wrong stats
often highest tier is the amount of stats, not their power and swordsman doesn't need +10 magic + 10 pets + 10 cooking + 20 hopusecleaning on their sword. it's legendary but it's useless

Unfortunately this made my 2019 most dissapointing game. It had so much potential but imo suffered from an even more aggrivating industry trend these days: playing it safe. Everything is easier to do D:

In the comments people are acting like the game is awful but it’s actually pretty good compared to most other recent games.

I don't know why this game even exists.
It adds nothings substantial and is just a rehash of the former games.
I got bored extremely quickly and in hindsight it would have sufficed to play one of the older games again to scratch the itch.

New Vault Hunters with multiple action skills and bigger skill trees, leaving a lot of room to play around with builds. Zane can have 2 skills at once, Amara can play a variety of roles based purely on action skill, Moze has 6 different action skill weapons to choose from, Flakk has 3 different pets.
The core gunplay is much smoother than prior games, default movement speed is increased and driving actually feels somewhat good instead of like a poorly handling chore.
Being able to fast travel at any time without needing to use a station makes getting around much less tedious than prior games. Overall movement is dramatically improved.
Cooperation setting allowing instanced loot is a great idea, as is making it optional.
BL3 has problems but so does any game. Most people consider the removal of slag to be a huge improvement over 2, without the floaty nature of the pre sequel being a further point in 3's favor.
2 had years worth of extra content to make it the game people love. 3 hasn't had the time for that to be added yet.
They could just keep adding content to 2 but making a new game allows a fresh start for the new content to be its own without riding the coattails of 2 or conflicting with it in terms of adding new mechanics.

This may be the case but I just have no interest in playing another character or a single character to a high level because the core experience is exactly the same as in the previous games. It just feels tedious at some point.
Would have been nice to add a new game mechanic or two. The world feels more like a hose too, for my taste it should be more open and interesting.
I don't play coop though. While playing with friends everything is more fun. But none of my friends plays this game and I don't want to play with strangers.

@@xarachne8473 maybe, maybe not, who knows. They should just add something that makes it an experience different enough from the previous games, so that it feels more unique in the series.
It also could be something that replaces something else. Or a unique way to make the player character stronger/more interesting.
The first game had weapon types that got better the more often they got used. The second game got rid of that and introduced achievements instead that additionally let you improve your character. That at least was something different.
