Nice guitar playing man! Very impressive for just learning! Amazing you started listening to AIC and you were motivated to learn their songs. Very cool man!
I just want to say that I really appreciate how much you young men appreciate Layne/AIC-they were certainly something special. I realize I may be a bit biased, as the 90s were my late teens and early twenties years-but that era of music is just the absolute best! 🤘🏻♥️♾️
In a few ways this performance was the final goodbye of the Grunge era: - Kurt had passed away 2 years before, ending Nirvana in its tracks - Soundgarden was disintegrating and would break up the next year - Pearl Jam and STP were still going, but shifted to a more alternative rock sound - Nu-metal and more accessible alternative rock bands exploded on the scene and took over radioplay - At this point, Alice in Chains had not toured in nearly 3 years. They would only perform four more shows before going on hiatus - Layne’s former girlfriend died later that year, sending him into a spiral of drug abuse and depression. He became a recluse and died six years later
Yep, I remember watching this premiere at the time and it really did feel that it was the end of era. The music industry shifted hard at the end of the 90s.
This was Alice in Chains' first live performance in 2.5 years. Layne was clean the prior year in 1995. That year, Layne Staley sang for Madseason with Guitarist Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Bassist John Baker Saunders of The Walkabouts, and Drummer Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees. This was a Super Group that was formed to support themselves to become drug free. I recommend checking out Madseason live at The Moore Theater 1995.
Layne was definitely not clean in 95, he looks like a zombie on that mad season set clinging to the mic but it never stopped him from being a world class singer
21:40 That nod from Jerry sums up the entire show in many ways. The band was very uncertain about Layne’s health and ability to perform at the level needed for this acoustic set. He’d been pretty rocky at the rehearsals he actually showed up to and most of them he was a no show. I’m pretty sure “Down in a Hole” was the second song of the set and Layne has a really big moment at the end of that first chorus and whether or not he pulls off that lick is going to set the tone for the entire set. He nails it and you can see in Jerry’s face just how proud he is of his brother in that moment as he nods to his other band mates that this is going to be the show they’d all prepared and hoped for. Amazing.
You know…I read my own comment, and thought, “Well, yeah, stupid. Why do you think they’re getting all these copyright strikes?” Someone wants you to buy a DVD to watch this. 😂
Glad you boys finally got to see this. Melancholic and dark, yet it remains one of the best live performances of the era. Legendary. The vocals from Layne and Jerry, goated bass tone from Mike, it just goes so hard.
I was in high school when this came on MTV. I still remember watching it for the first time, it’s been etched into my memory. They’ve been my favorite band since my cousins introduced me to them in 1993.
These bands in that era of '91-94 were so good! We didn't even know how good we had it in HS back during that time. I used to bring my entire CD case to class with me and would listen on my discman (even when not allowed) It's cool to see the appreciation being carried on to today. Good times.
This video is such a weird mix of beautiful and absolutely sad emotions. You are watching an incredible talent do what he was born to do, while at the same time you are seeing just a shell of a man he used to be, a broken person fighting for his last breath.. RIP Layne Staley, one of the greatest vocalists ever!
"Don't Follow" has a bit of a country vibe to it as well, though I'd say it's definitely more of a "southern rock" than it was country. Something akin to songs from the heyday of southern rock back in the 70's, from bands such as Jackson Browne, The Eagles, Steve Miller Band, Allman Brothers, Skynard, CCR, and Neil Young.
I was with y'all live, even after issue, after issue with the winter storm! I was watching in my car also in the freezing cold because I was away from my own place for work. Thanks for sticking with it during your own troubles with the winter chills blowing.
It's so cool you'e learning how to play the guitar inspired by these grunge icons, back in the day that was the same thing me and many others did after listening to music like this all day. :)
AIC is so hard to listen to in retrospect knowing what will happen and then that much of these lyrics where literal and predictive on Layne's end. A cry for help and even him acknowledging no one was hearing it and how that weighted on his heart. Then here to find him so passionate and soulful yet withering away. You really can't deny their potency. A eulogy and I love it as I regret it as this an example of transcending the music and art.
You guys have got to check out Temple of the Dog. It was made up of the members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, with Chris Cornell doing the lead vocalist work. They only put one album together, but it is a fantastic album and I think you two would dig it a lot. Two songs from that album: Say Hello 2 Heaven and Hunger Strike got major airplay.
You guys should react to Slowdive- Souvlaki. One of the most beautiful albums ever. It is basically "the" shoegaze album along with My Bloody Valentine- Loveless.
Great reaction lads I’m from England, I’ve been a Alice in chains fan since I was 12 I’m 41 now I’ve got 2 tattoos of the logo and would lyrics thank you
I watched this the first time it was aired on MTV and we all knew Layne wasn’t doing good. So I cried watching it the first time and I still shed a tear to this day.
Alice In Chains are a rad band. They have a number of really awesome songs, they have an air of mystique, killer riffs and haunting vocal melodies. But if I had to name my top 50 favorite bands I doubt they’d make the list. They’re not even my favorite band to do an Unplugged session with MTV. All that said, I think this is hands down the greatest Unplugged session of the entire series and it’s not even close. Every aspect of this is a 10. The band wasn’t in a confident place when they took the gig and their rehearsals weren’t that great either, but all that fell away when they came on stage. The lighting, the stage setting, the mixing, the shot compositions, the edits, everyone who worked on this thing brought their A game and deserves their flowers. Hell, I like to think that the interns making coffee runs for the crew were on one that day. I genuinely believe this show is one of the truly great moments between music and broadcast television. The Unplugged series was great because of all the inspired work that went into to making each show special and unique and this show was absolutely its apex. Has anyone ever heard an acoustic bass guitar sound this good before or since?
On Mike’s bass you’ll see “friends don’t let friends give friends haircuts” written, it’s a line joking with the Metallica guys who were sitting front row after they had recently cut their hair short.
Glad to see you guys enjoying the Mighty Alice in Chains. He was not missing his teeth at this point, people need to stop! He is on letterman months after this and you can see his teeth. They played sludge factory a bunch of times because he kept messing up the same line, being the first time they played the song live its not a big deal. Vedder messed up lyrics on Black unplugged and its a legendary performance. They re did to make sure it was right for album.
Please react to Jerry's solo stuff !! Boggy Depot (1998) see's Jerry explore a softer bluesy side, and has a wide variety of artists who play on the record. Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2 (2002) is "The meanest thing I've done since Dirt" (March 2000 quote from Jerry), and is arguably the darkest thing Jerry's ever recorded (especially the lyrics and backstory behind the album) Brighten (2021) see's Jerry take a country turn to his music I Want Blood (2024) is quite a bit like Alice, but also is different in the best ways possible.
Guys wasn’t high as shit… he did enough so he wasn’t sick on stage. Let his/their legendary performance be what’s taken from this show and remembered… Not any of the other gossip ppl love to spread. The fact that this was their first performance together in almost 3 years and they killed it speaks volumes of their talent and musicianship! Just my 2 cents. Great reaction as always guys keep up the great work! Please don’t take my comment as being aimed towards you guys… RIP L.S & M.S. in my opinion this is the best Unplugged performance in history! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Lane was going through major, Major heroin withdraws as he was trying to stay clean. He almost never did the show he was so sick. That's why he looks the way he did Sick or not, he still pulled off the best live MTV unplugged concert in History. That's what happened. I watched this when aired on satellite. It was Jerry that had a run in with a bad hotdog and fell to food poisoning or somethkmg close to, Not Lane fyi
As much as I thoroughly love and adore Layne/AIC, I don't listen to him/them very often-it just hurts me down to my soul-understanding with great clarity from my own struggles with addiction to H. Luckily, I managed, after years of trying and failing, to get clean and (eventually, finally) remain so. I only wish Layne could've found a way to do so as well. Oftentimes, I feel some sense of survivor's guilt-just so much talent gone, while I'm still here just being (plain old) me. RIP 🕊️💔♾️ Layne T. Staley 8/22/67-4/5/02
Awesome vid guys. I’m going to keep saying it. Load up the car and go see Pearl Jam live and focus it with the boys. They are one of the few bands still crushing it on tour. Do what you have to do before it’s too late to see them!!
So…kids….after one has been doing a drug like heroin for so long you no longer get high from it but you have to keep taking it or else you will get sick. The fact that you guys are so surprised at Layne’s appearance tells me that you haven’t been around people who are on hard drugs so you don’t know that at this point one does better high than in withdrawal. I’m glad you don’t have a lot of experience seeing people in the thralls of addiction. Keep it that way please. This was six years before he died so his decline was apparent but he definitely got so so so much worse. He weighed 86 lbs at death.
Layne is without a doubt the GOAT!!! Guys I will admit that their new stuff with lead singer William Duvall is really good. I suggest you check out the Black Gives Way to Blue album. "Check My Brain" is awesome.
Considering you'se guys' opinion of Alice in Chains and Tool, I'd recommend A Perfect Circle. Particular their album Thirteen Steps. It's basically Maynard James Keenan making an AIC album with more poetic writing. I should also add Thirteenth Step was written partially in remembrance of Layne Staley by Maynard James Keenan.
I love the grunge journey you guys are on, especially loved the Superunknown reaction, if you guys loved Chris Cornell I think you would enjoy Audioslave, specifically their self titled album which is in my opinion unskippable. The band is Chris Cornell and then all the band members of Rage Against the Machine, apart from Zack, the vocalist.
@@theeJAYBUDshow Please don’t sleep on Strapping Young Lad. Devin Townsend’s an insane singer, maybe the best ever, and the Self-Titled red album is a great place to start. Alien is a close 2nd or alternate best album. Their drummer Gene Hoglan is also GOAT’ed by many people.
I have mixed feelings about the MTV unplugged sessions because I generally think the studio version of every song is better than the unplugged versions, especially for Pearl Jam. Best version of nutshell though obv
Gotta disagree, mostly because I thought Ten was over-produced (too much reverb on the vocals). With the exception of Alive, due to the guitar solo, I enjoyed every one of their songs Unplugged just a touch more, especially Porch, Oceans, and Black. Just an opinion, though, we're both right.
Just to say, Layne hadn't lost any of his teeth yet. This is a rumor that goes around all tge time. If you look at mad season live at the Moore less than a year before his teeth were fine. Around the time of MTV unplugged they shot the Nona files and you can see all his teeth though they have deteriorated and are not in good health. I think he is super self conscious and is trying to keep his head down hide them here but they are there or his whole face would have lost structure. According to his father he started to loose them around 1998 after he had started to become reclusive. In 1999 Alice recorded Died and Get born again and I think he may have lost a couple but then but who knows for sure.
Go ahead guys there's a lot more beautiful grunge out there, mad season ,pearljam , soundgarden and more .... waiting for your reactions. A 36 year old grunge man ✌🏻
I have this cd and dvd listened to it a lot with my best friend Kody who passed away. I think its cool you guys like Alice more than Nirvana. Everyone can agree they were more talented but my favorite still is Nirvana nonetheless Alice is amazing I know. My band plays Man in the box I do the leads Jerry Cantrel is so good.
