  • This documentary meets the descendants of the people that changed the face of Samoa and takes a look at the potential problems that come with the new wave of Chinese arriving in Samoa today.
    Despite the history, the newest wave of Chinese to arrive in Samoa has upset a lot of the locals.
    Taking businesses that should be set aside for Locals, skirting laws set up to prevent them from doing so and funnelling money out of the Samoan economy, are just some of the issues being voiced by Samoans.

    99.99% of the old Chinese are Samoans and we should all embrace our uniqueness way of living in a society where ones culture influences the other for a better way of life and learning for all, they have my utmost respect and alofa. The newly arrived Chinese are of a different breed, people is not a factor for their business model, money is. The Australian Government and the US are currently have issues of concerns in the way the Chinese are slowly influencing Universities and big Companies in the Hi Tech area. It is good that we are now talking about the new wave of Chinese and the concerns of our local businesses, it is too late now to back off from the commitment that the Samoa Government has entered into with the Chinese Government, But, I know Samoan people do not give up easily too, so, something has to give and I hope it is for a better Samoa. GOD BLESS SAMOA, ma lo'u fa'aaloalo lava.

    I am Chinese Samoan 3rd generation and I am proud of my heritage and culture both sides.
    How ever in the current climate and new generation of Chinese government. The goal is overpowerment.
    A world war 3 is coming in our century, whether we like it or not and if we are not careful we will become war prisoners in our own countries and that is the very reason for setting up shop in every struggling country and enticing them with new new development and ever growing possibilities. All in the while trapping them in a large debt, that we can never pay off.
    So to the Samoan government.... please careful with all the give and takes. The cost will always be more then what it's worth and our grand parents and great grandfather did not sacrifice all they have suffered for to give life to our new tomorrow for us to end up as war prisoners. Remember time has change and the cruelty back in world war 2 is going to nothing compared to was us coming and we let them in the front door with open arms.
    I pray I am wrong.
    For I really do love my Chinese heritage too.

      Why do Chinese need to speak Samoan language? and still, Loan $1.3bn to lazy Samoans? help Samoan with agriculture, and not given the slightest respect? by DON'T RUN the country you mean they shouldn't be given any political power, not even VOTE right even they are naturalized citizen? So basically you people are like the Javanese and Malay? you ain't related but isn't this selfish and sneaky, you want Chinese to work and lend you money and what do they get in return? how about Samoan work harder and pay back Beijing the money and ask for no more help from the Chinese? I think that's better, I don't think the Samoans deserve any help from China.

      Met Alot of amazing Chinese people in my life time. But they are the small minority.
      The fact of the matter us, the Chinese government is different from their people.
      When your the most financially strongest country in the world and still not able to provide Medicare and meet your people's basic needs. What does that say. When your you work 12 to 20hrs and only get paid 1 dollar an hr. Even in the year 2020. What does that say.
      The Chinese government is able to afford to lend millions and even billions dollors to one country another and even more to another and yet be able to take care of it's own people.
      How is that not an alarm or sign of concerns for our national community to then take a step back and re think the deals they are ultimately signing generation and generation and generation of debts. Because they will not be here to see that debt be paid of. It will be your great great great great great grad kids that will end up , if ever paying this debt of.
      So as god said. Love thy neighbour.
      But he never said. To be stupid about.

I think the Chinese in now days are different from Chinese in those days. I think most Chinese business that are coming in today only wanted money, they take that money back to China it doesn’t stay in Samoa. All I’m saying, think about your kids future.

    I have no qualms with the Chinese that have been in Samoa before 2000,those well known Chinese families worked hard for their businesses and we can't discriminate against them because they earned what they worked hard for but its the new wave of Chinese thats becoming a concern. Because unlike the Chan Mows,Ah Chongs,Ah Likis,LeiSam's etc who set up retails and wholesale shops supplying small local business and small village shops the new wave came with millions and buy out almost every village shop and set up big retail and wholesale shops and taking over our trades not only in Apia but the small villages making it impossible for the small operators to compete and make any profit for themselves. As Lautafi stated we need investors but there needs to be regulations and control in place to make sure they do not suffocate local businesses

    It is perfectly within the Samoan government's natural right as a governing body to protect the interests of it's current constituents in the best manner it sees fit; In the same way it is the Chinese immigrant's (and any individual for that matter) right to search and work for prosperity in the most lucrative form possible for himself and his dependents . If both exercise their respective natural rights just shy of intentional infringement of the other's prosperity, an equilibrium should be within reach... Obviously easier said than done, but still a point worth making. Especially after hearing that naive afakasi lady's position on the matter. The past (while a useful example to be learned from) is the past. Any lessons learned from it are to be tempered by the rapid development of contemporary society in the age of information technology. To expect the Samoan government to welcome all Chinese business even at the expense of it's constituents naive. Your welcome.

We have been independent for many years and we don't want to ever be ruled again, So that's why Samoans have a right to speak up and say that we would like to grow and develop before they do. Not being racist or anything but we would like our country to be great and so we are still building on it but I don't think our Samoan Oldies want the Chinese to take over.

    This upsets me that China is overstepping their welcome into Samoa.I really hope that Samoa holds onto their Independence and Traditions. Samoa is 🇼🇸, and should stay that way, the most friendliest culture in the world, don't allow China to destroy that. They have already taken parts of the state I live in, in the U.S. with their little and big stores, they generally cater to their own people, and they're RUDE! I'll admit that my great great great grandfather was a Chinese immigrant, in Samoa. Finding this out not too long ago was hard for me to accept, I really don't care for the Chinese that are here in the U.S. They have hidden agendas, you will see them build homes and hide Chinese women in those homes to impregnate them so they have Samoa borned babies and use them to claim whatever they can, that's what they are doing here, in the U.S., and the U.S. is turning a blind eye to the Chinese take over, for what? $$$$$, that's what, and now this COVID19 BS has the U.S. looking at China in a different way...SAMOA DIDN'T ASK THE CHINESE TO COME TO SAMOA, THE CHINESE WERE TAKEN THERE BY A DIFFERENT COUNTRY!! And now China wants to breed wherever they can to take over the world!! I may have 00.01% Chinese blood in me, but I'm 100% Samoan Heart and Soul!!! I don't owe the Past, ANYTHING, to China. Would you care if Europeans are immigrating over to the US? No, because they are white and they can be blended in as an American naturally. ARE CHINESE THE ONES CLAIMING WHATEVER THEY CAN OR ARE THE EUROPEANS DOING SO? WAKE UP DUDE! Chinese people built the transcontinental railroad in the U.S. Please respect the fact that even though we have done so much in North America, we have been banned from immigrating there multiple times. Also, saying that ALL chinese people are rude is so stereotypical, that's literally like saying all white people are racists and colonizers. I pray that you'll get out of your negative mindset soon. Anyways, I don't have anything against Samoa or Samoan people but I'm very disappointed of the xenophobic comments such as this made to the ethnic Chinese. • @limgueklow3130
      @limgueklow3130 5 років тому +1

      Many malays decided to migrate to Malaya across the strait when Singapore became independent. Singaporean government never wanted independence but the Malayan government forced it. The malays who stayed are still there. Btw the singaporean chinese, like many colonial-era migrant chinese, are different from the post-communist mainland chinese. Singapore had an anti-chinese-culture policy until today. Chinese cultural export is a new global phenomenon.

    China has been looking to expand its reach all over the world. Their goal is resources to boom their economy by doing what the Americans did throughout the century by starting businesses and partnerships with almost every country. China's GDP isnt that far off from America's so these small moves by starting businesses everywhere is the first step in their political campaign for both economic growth and influence. At the end of the day it benefits both countries in the present but only China in the future.

  • @a90d73
    @a90d73 3 роки тому +1

    Take back control of our homeland. The help and growth was needed and nice in the beginning. But now Samoa needs to grow on their own with help or assistance, not financial takeover. What she doesn’t seem to understand is the economy has been dominated by outside influence rather than inner growth from Samoa’s own economy. She sees more Chinese is good TO HER and her grandfather. But business wise, if Samoa falls deeper into debt in China’s pocket, then China’s pocket is the last thing Samoa has to worry about. Samoa WILL be China’s new land through Financial Takeover. Writing is on the wall and the new PM is smart to decipher it. Samoa will have to start opening their eyes to what’s really going to happen. We as Samoans can’t be stupid and ignorant like this woman saying that more Chinese is good just like how Afakasi was becoming normal. Obviously she doesn’t care to understand what’s really going on around her and seeing the poverty that is going on in the Island when it’s supposed to be a Paradise.

    Yes. Be careful what you wish the Chinese for. Our Chinese forefathers are not the same as the current Chinese business owners. The new ones are aggressive, have no respect for human rights and do not care for the environment. If our Chinese forefathers were alive now, they would probably warn us of the motives of the current dragons to connect, take over and control our freedom. The current Chinese businesses don't care less if you are part Chinese or not. Chinese don't even think of Samoans as humans. They show no respect for nobody. So be careful what you wish for Samoa.... Just look at what Chinese businesses are currently doing to other Pacific nations ie. Fiji villagers, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, PNG and others 🤗🤗🤗🤗

    This new age is definetly an Asia Pacific Age. The Eurocentric Atlantic civilization with its its imposing colonisation is fading in influence. China cannot be ignored. We have to live with China. China's Confucius foundation is the common base we can work with. Respect for elders, family and community is why the old Chinese integrated well with Faa Samoa and our Christian ways. The more militant Communist Party ethos is not welcome and must be curbed by wise patriotic leadership.
    Godless, Selfcentred national leaders will be the ones who sell out Samoa and other Pacific Nations for mere mammon.
    Wise, God centred leaders with a true sense of patriotism and regional family will federate and unite to preserve our Aiga centred culture. We 🙏 pray for such leaders. Samoa is founded on God and Aiga culture.

    It's not racism that the Polynesians want to protect their land. Look what happened to Hawaii. The Chinese need to understand that they come into communities, use the opportunity to monopolize and don't give back to the community. It's the same that happens in Black communities when Asians open up stores in the neighborhood and make money off of the people but are racist towards that same community they are making money off of.

Chinese FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS have played a big part in the development of our country and continued to do so.... however we must be very careful and beware of the influence from the Chinese government and their big business coming in and taking over what we already have and established...... Samoa definitely needs a new voice in parliament to adjust and balanced our dealings with foreign countries and big business.... the current government is corrupt and im sorry to say it...... its so obvious ......

    The commentary and dialogue is confusing. I'm not hearing examples or the causes of the wariness towards new Chinese businesses and practice. More aggressive? Ok in what way? Otherwise I'm hearing xenophobia narratives and stereotypes being repeated, as the young lady said, there's elements of racism present. These are pretty smart people who were interviewed, the video editor should have taken more care to fully expand the narrative of the video.
