He-Man was the first thing I was ever "into" when I was a kid. A very, very little kid at that. I don't remember it but according to my Mom I used to run around in a diaper, barely able to talk, screaming "I the power!" (I couldn't even say "have" yet LOL) I do remember having Castle Greyskull as a kid though, that was awesome.

You should definitely check out the cartoon from the 2000s. I grew up with He-man as a kid, the old show has its charm in a nostalgia kinda way but the 2000s show is superior in lot of ways. Its a prime example of how to do a reboot correctly. It respects the source material, it expands and improves the lore, the characters are more fleshed out and the stories are great. Its just such a shame that it got cancelled. Kevin Smith has his work cut out for him with the new show hes making.

@@micronoid I like the original better. My only issue with the original, is about the so called Masters of the Universe. The only Master that kicked butt ..was Teela. Man at Arm's, would (talk a good game) but usually, he would only get beat up! He looks coolest only in the intro. Shooting his lasers! Ram man, got beat up alot too! The same with the rest of them! Heck, He-man's parents would do better than the Masters! The 2002 show was darker than the original, (they even went as far, to show a character get eaten by snake people). These days, people are into the dark stuff ...me, not so much. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about Adam being a young kid, on the one hand, it makes sense, to hide difference between Adam and He-man. In the original, they looked exactly the same, (only He-man would get a tan). Yet, nobody would ever know (except for maybe his mother). I got the 2002 He-man game, it's ok, except getting past that area that was shown in the video, and you can get lost easy! Otherwise it's ok, but I miss the original music, (yeah, I know it's a different show from the original). Anyhow, that's why I perfer the Operbor game! I will say, the 2002 He-man show, was at least better than the one from the 90's!

I never liked the Zodak focus in the 2002 reboot. He seemed unnecessary, existing as a plot device to defeat King Hiss.
One can argue it changes things up by having someone other then He-Man save the day. But again, why is he necessary? They never established He-Man "couldn't" defeat Hiss.

maybe there has never been the right time and audience to make and market a big budget He-Man game. video games were not that big back then when the action figures and cartoons were a hit I guess. and PCs were expensive and slow. so what platform to develop one on? And kids back then had to persuade their parents to buy another of these weird muscular action figures and maybe a playset for Christmas and some video cassettes of the cartoons. Buy a cosnole and games? good luck kid. and the he man fans nowadays are about what? 40something? now they got the money to afford it but would they still buy a He man game to make it a hit? me not. and the younger audience probably wont know the franchise enough to have it earn decent cash would it?

There was a dope remake in early 2000s on Cartoon Network (Around the same time they remade Thunderkats) and it was amazing, but unfortunately got cancelled. I’m going by memory and it’s been a while)... pretty good series. Also check out david eddings, the belgariad trilogy and the followup, as well as the sparhawk books... mwah! Perfecto! Erin, you know about MUGEN, but do you know of Beats of Rage? It came out as an indie Dreamcast game and is basically a sprite ripped Streets of Rage clone. So then the developer released OpenBOR and that’s what’s used to make the #1 game on this list! The bad news is that it’s as much of a home brew as MUGEN is, the good news is that much like MUGEN there’s Capcom-style beat em ups for almost any character you can think of! :)

Not hating because I've heard a lot of people say this. But I'm just curious. Why is everything "good... for the Gameboy advance"? I understand hating on the original Gameboy, because it was primitive even for the time. But the Gameboy advance is basically a portable SNES. In fact, it is objectively superior on several fronts (better processing so no slowdowns, better sound chip, better color reproduction, etc). But you never hear people say "chrono trigger is good... for the SNES". No, many people would consider the SNES to be one of the best consoles of all time. Sure the Gameboy advance was primitive compared to the GameCube. But I think most people would agree that the GBAs 2D graphics have aged more gracefully than the GameCube's 3D graphics. Sure, Golden Sun is no Chrono Trigger, but its still a damn great RPG. I think anyone would be happy to play it on any console. So why such low expectations? Is it just because handhelds are assumed to be for "filthy casuals" inherently? Just wondering why this is a common perception.

How about a thundercat or defenders of the earth game next, there are some 😉👍

I have a copy of Defender of Greyskull for PS2 and got the instruction booklet signed by Cam Clarke, who voiced He-Man in the 2002 series, on which that game is based. By the way, you mentioned wishing a He-Man arcade game had been made, and you may be interested to know that Bally/Midway was working on one in 1984. Brian Colin, who produced so much artwork for so many of their games at the time, said he saw concept artwork for it, but it never progressed much further than that into anything playable before it was canceled. It’s sad because that would have been an awesome game. Bally/Midway was one of the top arcade developers of their day.

I remember late at night years ago the channel Qubo had a programming block called Night Owl, where they showed back to back episodes of the old Filmation shows like He-Man, She-Ra, BraveStarr, Ghostbusters.

MOTU *does* have a map. You just have to press the space-bar to bring it up. The game is impossible without it.
Fascinating rundown of what's out there gamingwise anyway, thanks.

I agree with you, Erin. It is very unfortunate that such an iconic, Classic 80's hero, and cartoon, could get so Jacked Up, as a video game! Very disappointing. Thanks for taking me back, to my childhood, though!

There's a port of OpenBor for the Wii. If you have your Wii soft modded and installed the Homebrew Channel you can play the He-Man beat'em up game on your Wii.

The movie was not that good, although Frank Langella crushed it as Skeletor. That being said, the best thing out of that film is the AWESOME, EPIC score composed and conducted by Bill Conti.

I highly recommend checking out the 2002 series, it's absolutely fantastic. I also recommend checking out the DC Comics run from 2012, the crossover comics (Thundercats and Injustice, which makes me think you're right about He-Man being in Injustice 3), and the currently running Masters of the Multiverse series (a fantastic love letter to every incarnation of He-Man, and probably the best MOTU story to date' including Tappers He-Man, who's the best character in the franchise). Additionally, while controversial, I think the POP reboot's really good. It captures the feel good nature of the Filmation shows, but ups the stakes and updates things in clever ways, as well as having really great character development (it also takes inspiration from a ton of obscure things with Mara from New Adventures of He-Man showing up and a bunch of obscure things from foreign comics and audio dramas). Also, we're going to get a new He-Man series next year called Masters of the Universe: Revelations, which Kevin Smith is the showrunner for, and has Mark Hamill as Skeletor.
Also, you should check out the Dark Horse books (the art book mentions that there's a new game in the works) as well as battleramblog.com.
Finally, there's a new toyline called Masters of the Universe Origins coming out later this year (as well as a WWE crossover line that's already out). They're inspired by the vintage figures, but have more articulation (and will include new minicomics).
Sorry, MOTU's been a bit of an obsession of mine for about the past year.

Erin, this was an awesome survey and a blast from the past... well, my past at least. Thank you so much for the look back. It really makes me wish there was a Masters of the Universe fighting game in the style of TMNT Tournament Fighters. I think that would still sell really well, even today.

I've owned Toy Soldiers War Chest for a long time but first played it a couple of weeks ago. (I got it for free in a buy 2 get 1 free sale and wasn't interested enough to make it a higher priority.) I love Tower Defense games but IMO this is a very poor example.
And I'm definitely in the "Why the hell haven't there been more He-Man games?" section. Beat em ups, platformers, fighting games, Gauntlet or Diablo style action-adventure games, or action RPGs, and Dynasty Warriors style games all could work well IMO.

Fun Fact: the He-Man toy line was originally supposed to be a tie-in to the 1982 Conan the Barbarian Movie, hoping it would be the next Star Wars. When the movie came out, it was super-violent and R rated (it featured cannibalism, orgies, beheadings and a crucifixion) and Mattel backed out of the deal. They kept the molds, and reinvented the toy line as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
The original Oliver Stone screenplay featured the sorcerer Thulsa-Doom in his original form, a Lich with a skeleton head. The filmmakers switched the character out with "Thoth-Amon", but still used the name Thulsa-Doom for the character (I guess it was cheaper not to have to animate a skeleton head). Mattel retained the skeleton-head for their toy version of the character, which is where Skeletor comes from.

Looks at your number 1 pick: HA! There are way too many frames of animation for it to be confused with the Filmation cartoon! Since it was before your time, allow me to explain. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe followed the "Filmation formula". For any given cartoon Filmation made, they would create a bunch of stock animations for their characters, and just reuse them as much as possible throughout the whole series. They did this to cut costs, with the admirable intent of keeping all of the company's animation jobs in the US. The longer one of their shows would run, the more obvious the animation recycling would get. I remember their Flash Gordon show reusing Flash and Ming's fighting animations at least twice, they just swapped what background they were fighting in front of.
