I'm glad you didn't "make the assumption." I'm new to this, and didn't know the speaker clips were so simple to remove/attach. I found this video because I wanted to know if soldering was involved. Thank you for giving me the confidence that this is a job I can easily tackle.
Awesome. I bought my 17 year old son this amp in summer 2019 and he loved it. I thought the sound could be better so for Christmas 2019 I bought him this same speaker . We did the easy mod and my son ,and myself, love this new sound. What a night and day difference. Worth the $120 upgrade.
I just did the same upgrade this morning and OMG, what a huge difference in tone!!! I suggest anyone who has this amp put this speaker in! I play most rock and metal so this is a great upgrade.
Looking to do this swap; aiming for the 90’s Green Day tone. This tones down the Ultra Grain treble a good bit from my gatherings. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to dig into the C19 mod.
Sweetwater is offering this amp with a Celestion Creamback speaker at no extra charge. Would you consider that an upgrade compared to the stock Seventy 80? Thanks. -Nate
Just an FYI for everyone. Sweetwater is selling this amplifier with the Creamback stock. No price increase for this upgrade. Just bought one. Very nice sound.
I also went with the v30, it sounded better after the first strum, then about 6mths later it's now fully broken in and sounds mighty sweet to my ears. V30 is also louder, I look forward to your comments after the change and when you do the bias, great review keep em coming \m/
Thanks for sharing. I like to try to do these types of things myself and often run into little snags if I'm going by an article or illustration. It's good to see a vid before doing so. I'm swapping mine for a creamback 65. Looks easy enough.
Hey mark I just found your channel, I like this amp but it has no bass, I have bought, pedals and line 6 stuff and I can’t get the sound I want do you think a different speaker will help I’m really interested in the stuff you do, and I don’t play very loud either my dog would bite me and suggestions
+Mark Jenkins i find 7080 being only good for mid gain blues otherwise useless. I play death metal (shredding) and when tried to push 7080 it had hard time to cope. G12t75 is sweet but needs to break in a bit more. the combo is great. I managed 2 different sounds by distortion thru clean Chanel and Ultra 2nd tone... it worked well and nice in the mix... im considering the C19 mod as well. very loud combo. Solos are great thru Blackstar Distx on clean thru Ultra 2nd tone Gain around 6. I play LTD BS-7
I upgraded from a Peavey Valveking 112 to this DSL40c. Boy is it glorious, even with the stock speaker. I'll upgrade the speaker eventually, but for now, what I don't know won't hurt me 😀
Really good video, it was really very easy to change, just a question I have the same amp and I want to change the stock speaker, in the video you have used a 16 ohm v30 , this amp also have two 8 ohm inputs so can I also use a 8 ohm v30? thanks!!
Hey i just bought this amp but it was used and everything is mint but im having trouble putting in the two EL34 tubes all the way? its just not fitting correctly, any advice?
Thanks for doing this video. I am soon to be swapping to a 30 in my DSL. I also noticed the biasing video. Is that something I need to do to mine, or only if I upgrade the tunes? Thanks again!
Thank you so much for posting this. It's great to see what i'm getting myself into. Would it be ok if I used an 8ohm speaker if I switch where that little cable goes to? I assume yes..... but I assume nothing. Would appreciate it if you could confirm that, total newb here. Thanks again for doing this vid.
I couldn't find any answer on the Internet, so what if I changed my speaker to a bigger one, will the volume increase? I don't know how it works so bear with me.
You can actually run any speaker in either, with little to no risk of damage, but it changes the tone. I have a friend that uses an 8 ohm speaker in a 16 jack because he likes the sound better. Research it first, but I've read it generally won't fry your amp. But, keep in mind, it is a budget amp made in Vietnam, so, I don't know I'd risk it.
The fuzziness of the amp is a problem even crank in my experience. I use an overdrive pedal with each channel, it helps get rid of 60% of it. And it tightens up the sound of the amp. Next I'm going to order an Eminence CV 75. Which is like the vintage 30, except it doesn't have any Fuzziness on the top end. It's made to sound like a vintage 30 from the 80s. When they didn't have the fizzy top end. They were made in England and we're better quality. Every review of CV- 75 sounds amazing.
I'm upgrading mine to the Creamback M-65. Per celestion.com the Seventy 80 weighs 6.8 lbs w Sensitivity of 98db, the Vintage 30 is 10.4 lbs & 100db and the Creamback 65 is 7.9 lbs and 97db, so I'll be seeing a more slight increase in weight and just a bit of a decrease in efficiency, which works fine for me as I mostly gig my living room. ;^) Thanks for the vid.
What speaker do you think would be good for a nice hard hitting Metallica type of 80's thrash metal tone (including their cleans), yet also be versatile enough for other subgenres of rock.
Alekai Reyna after doing my research the 70/80 seems better for that. The vintage 30 is much better for rock n roll and harder classic rock, while the creamback seems more suitable for more lighter classic and blues tones but I actually found the 70/80 to be best all around, people just change it because the other speakers sound better for their style of music but, I am so versatile with what I like and the 70/80 may not be the best at certain styles but it was put in the DSL because it's the versatile. 70/80 if you want to play classic rock, jazz, blues, thrash metal, nu wave, metalcore, you name it.
+George Khoshaba do you know if an EQ pedal would help get that Early Kill em All/Ride the Lightning tone? Or if there's any other way? Because I love everything else about the amp I just can't get that chug I'm looking for. :/
Alekai Reyna an EQ pedal is would be great for that or possible a tube screamer, make sure you can also play at a loud enough volume to get the most out of your tubes, if not play on the triode 20w setting. I'm still looking for something suitable for that tone but I want more of a Master of Puppets album sound but if I can get all of their tones that would be great. Whatever you do stay away from the Metal Zone distortion pedal. What kind of guitar/ pickups are you using?
Would the Vintage 30 be good for playing like Van Halen and harder rock? I'm a huge fan of cranking everything to 10 on this amp so you get that raw sound... Would this speaker be good for that? The 70/80 isn't that great
+Mark Jenkins oh right on!! Thanks!! That helped a lot! I play everything at 10 on half power except the volume, that's at like a 2.5 which speaker do you think would be better for a Van Halen/80's hard rock sound... The Greenback or the Creamback? I really like the Creamback, but idk which one is better
A heavier speaker - magnet has absoluteley nothing to do with Tone improvement , There are different magnet types and sizes , such as Ceramic - Alnico and neodymn wich is a very light magnet type . Also Speaker sensivity plays a huge role in volume too .
I compared two DSL 40c, one with the v30 and one with the creamback. The creamback sound so much better to me and I play mostly harder classic rock like deep purple and led zeppelin
I don't have a problem with the sound of my 80 celestion the tubes light up just no sound ive heard lots of bad things about this amp i got in a pawn shop put out 400$ for a 2017 model so im gonna have to find someone that can fix it i took it to a local dude he told me if i can get it to work sell it immediately
I like my stock speaker just fine. Amp sounds awesome. Ill trust Mr. Marshall and associates. I like to keep my gear stock as possible. Besides i don't need to add another 5 lbs to carry and waste the money. FYI I also have a Blackstar club 40 that has the vintage 30 and I have an external 1x12 cab with a 70/80 speaker that I use with it. There is no discernible difference. I think people love to fiddle with these things and hear what they want to hear.
No its a big difference...I have a orange cab with a vintage 30 and I run my 40c with that cab all the time.,..I even unplug the 70/80 and if I want more treble and a brighter sound I plug both in...

Just installed a V30. The difference is incredible! Do not buy this amp without the intention of swapping the speakers.
This amp with this mod sounds so good. Here it is 2-22-22 !!! And this amp rocks. Glad we saw your upgrade vid some years ago.
The DSL loves V30's. Yeah, the V30 is everywhere but the DSL really benefits from it. The creamback M65 works well with the DSL too (I have both).
Subscribed because of the tight bottom end joke....and I learned something.
They're all tight...

I have a v30 but in open back 1x12 it lacks bass imo I just ordered a g12-65 creamback.
I also went with the v30, it sounded better after the first strum, then about 6mths later it's now fully broken in and sounds mighty sweet to my ears. V30 is also louder, I look forward to your comments after the change and when you do the bias, great review keep em coming \m/
Such a helpful video! Thanks so much. Had no idea it was so easy

Can I replace the stock 40 watt speaker with a 65 watt speaker of the same impedance?
Hey mark I just found your channel, I like this amp but it has no bass, I have bought, pedals and line 6 stuff and I can’t get the sound I want do you think a different speaker will help I’m really interested in the stuff you do, and I don’t play very loud either my dog would bite me and suggestions
thanks for the instructions. I have replaced it for G12t 75

+Marc see - How it sound ?
+Michal Tudek Hi Michael - really nice - DLS40 is a sleeper. check my recording on eventually3.bandcamp.com/releases.
I just bought this amp, I already have the G12t75 speaker. Can I use this one? Same ohms? Does it sound better?
THANX for the Vid' , does the increase in weight endanger the amp's front panel ?
Hey man please one vídeo Celestion 70/80 vs Celestion v30 on this amp!
Excelent! Its 16ohm or 8ohm ?
I'm considering the V30 swap as well. However, is there a speaker that would sound good in this amp at low volumes? I also play a lot of drop tunings.
I upgraded from a Peavey Valveking 112 to this DSL40c. Boy is it glorious, even with the stock speaker.
I'll upgrade the speaker eventually, but for now, what I don't know won't hurt me 😀

Mark, have you had any issues with tubes in your dsl I.e., crackling sounds or popping
Thank you so much for posting this. It's great to see what i'm getting myself into. Would it be ok if I used an 8ohm speaker if I switch where that little cable goes to? hey there, I own a 212 cab with seventy 80 speakers, is it possible to swap one with a vintage 30? and would the combination sound good? cheers.
How does this amp compare to the older 1x12 jtm60 Marshall amps?
did you ever do a video after you did the install? I would really like to hear...
same here!
I couldn't find any answer on the Internet, so what if I changed my speaker to a bigger one, will the volume increase? I don't know how it works so bear with me.
would you use the 8 ohm in put jack for an 8 Ohm V 30?

Would the amp work with a 90 watt speaker?
Mark, you cold record a video with vintage 30 speaker?

What colosium do you play in?
I have a vintage 30 that’s 8 ohms, can I run that and switch the input to he 8 ohm speaker jack?
Thanks man

can I replace a 16 Ohm speaker by a 15 Ohm ?

+gmlasam Which Creamback was in it? m65 or h75? Thanks
the m65
Sweetwater is selling them right now with a cream back fiend extra charge.
I don't have a problem with the sound of my 80 celestion the tubes light up just no sound ive heard lots of bad things about this amp i got in a pawn shop put out 400$ for a 2017 model so im gonna have to find someone that can fix it i took it to a local dude he told me if i can get it to work sell it immediately

great clip
Is this 16 ohm or 8 ohm 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you.
Hmmm vintage 30 or classic lead 80. Such a difficult choice!
How to operate a Phillips head screwdriver.
the weight thing was very illustrative....
Mine had this horrible top end sound u couldn’t get rid of. But I like the sound of a Marshall amp
It doesn't take months to break the speaker in
Look up celestion speaker break in
There's no soldering? Wow.
the seventy/80 speaker is lousy and cheap. GEEEZ, Marshall really cheaped out on that one. The V30 is great.
I'm looking for a tight bottom end... I guess we all are...
