These are set in London, but filmed in Cardiff. I live here, and it always adds something when you recognise a familiar street. The spin-off series aimed at a more adult audience, Torchwood, features Captain Jack as the leader of a group dealing with situations outside of the mundane, is actually set in Cardiff. He's a fascinating character.

The fandom loves Captain Jack. This episode is definitely built around the scene of the Doctor shouting, “Just this once, everybody lives”. Imagine how many times he’s failed to save people, how many episodes end with people sacrificing themselves to save the world. It’s good to finally give the Doctor an episode where everything works out and he can leave happy. It’s probably the only episode in the series where he can end up happy enough to dance. The value the episode has increases the more Who you watch and the more death you see.

I read an interview with the writer of this story. He was asked about the people who had contacted the BBC to complain that it had scared their kids to the point of nightmares. He was absolutely thrilled about it! Kind of, "YES! Hide behind the sofa like people would in the old days! - job done!".

Jack Harkness plays a pivotal role in Dr Who from now on. In time he becomes leader of the Torchwood. A brilliant spin off. The two series often share joint storyines and the series are very intermingled having visual clues common to both programs as well as characters guesting on both shows. Like everbody says "Blink" is terrifying. If you remember the bad wolf mentions so have the writers. This is the start of a wild ride

Introducing one of DWs greatest writers. One of the great things about this episode is showing the dark side of the blitz. Like all countries who fought in WW2, Britain has a mythology about the war. One of these is the 'blitz spirit' with people singing together in shelters and defying the nazis. This was part of it of course but the crime and terrible poverty was rife. My mum was ten when the blitz began. My grandad was a black marketeer and petty criminal so I have heard a lot about how dark and terrifying this time really was.

Glad to see you enjoyed this... and welcome to the writing of Steven Moffat... He's a fantastic writer and you'll get used to looking forward to his story every season.. And then after a few seasons he takes over the show and you'll notice the difference. And Jack? Well... Jack's Jack.... If you don't love him already, you soon will.. And I'm assuming you'll add Torchwood to your show's viewed...

I do not envy your job of having to cut these down for you tube, Captain Jack reappears from time to time and is the lead character of the spin off series Torchwood.

0:50 this has been my main issue with the show's revival, especially Russel T Davis' era.
Of all the universe across all time pretty much every episode was centred within the same 200 years of Earth / England
Also it was around the time these episodes aired that it was outed Christopher Ecclestone would be leaving at the end of the series. The stories at the time being he had a bad falling out with one of the higher ups behind the scenes (proven years later to be Russel himself).
However I don't think David Tennant was ever announced as the new Doctor until he was revealed in the regeneration scene
Glad your enjoying Doctor Who both classic and revival, EB. Thanks again for the great content

Also these were pretty much instantaneously considered the episodes of the series, maybe with exception to the Dalek episode.
Even 20 years later it's virtually law in the UK if someone's wearing something resembling a gas mask one has to say "are you my mummy?"

Well, focusing so many episodes in the locals is for saving on the budget that would otherwise be exhausted on extensive scene sets. Btw, not mad, just thought I'd put that out.

Hi E.B., I`m glad you enjoyed the story, although you certainly got frustrated early on. I can`t say it affected me in that way when I watched it. I`m surprised you didn`t seem to notice Rose`s unhelpful tee-shirt when daggling from a rope, in the middle of a German air raid. You will notice stories written by Steven Moffat, can be often unsettling.
