How To Set The Day, Date, & Time on a Seiko 5 Watch

- Follow this quick guide to correctly set the day & date on a Seiko 5 watch. Switching between AM and PM settings can be difficult, and if you want your watch to be 100% accurate, you'll need to set these figures properly.
Warning Avoid changing the date & day settings on your Seiko 5 between 9:00pm and 4:00am, as this can damage the automatic calendar functions. If your watch is set to one of these times, pull the crown out to its second position and move the hands out of this time zone before adjusting the calendar.
Essentially, setting up your Seiko 5 watch involves pulling the crown out and rotating it to change your settings. Change your calendar first (move the crown out one position), by turning the crown and setting the figures to the day and date before the current one. This way, when you pull out the crown and begin to turn the crown and move the hands forward, the calendar will automatically change as you go past 12 o'clock. This will sync your watch to the AM time, and your calendar should automatically change every 24 hours from this point.
To change the time on a Seiko 5 watch, simply pull the crown out two positions, and adjust the time by turning the crown towards or away from you.
From there, you can sync your time up with a working clock, and push the crown down so it continues ticking along. Keep in mind that most Seiko 5s will shift +/- 15 seconds per month, and will occasionally need to be tuned up.

I thought there was something WRONG with my Seiko 5 right after purchasing it, since it was displaying the wrong language right after I had thought I successfully set it, but I realized I work graveyard shift and this video helped delineate how the language switches at 3am! Thank you!
One thing is that if you have a bilingual watch meaning it displays the days of the week in two languages set the date to your language before todays date. Ex. If you chose Spanish and today is Mar, set it to Lun then when you set the time, right after it switches to English (at around midnight) Tuesday, it’ll switch again at 3am.
But what if I wanna choose English, and it’s on the watch for like 3 hours. Mostly it’s spanish, how do I change it ? Could you give me an advice please ?
This video is a life changer! Thanks to you, i set my very first automatic watch right 😄
A quick and clean video! I was able to set the correct day and time. Thank you!
Agreed , simples !! 😂
Super simple but extremely well explained video, thanks mate
Finally someone gave a proper demo on UA-cam!
quick, easy to follow, straight to the point. nice one!
All I needed was the first minute of the video. Awesome watch!
Thanks for the video helped me set up my first swill automatic watch I was clueless!
Oh god, I just returned the snxs73k because the date would not advance right. We probably either broke it by setting it incorrectly or we were just setting it wrong.
I did not even think to look up a video like this one. And thought I did it right..
I just followed your directions & now I have it set right. Thank you!
Excellent video. Knocked it out the park. This beats an instruction manual.
I see that with the bilingual models the day in the primary language changes roughly 45mins after midnight and the day in second language (in this case english), changes 3-something hours after midnight! I thought my watch was defect but I guess this is the modus operandi for analog?
How about setting only the date, not including the day? Can I directly adjust the date? Because there are months that has only 30 days, so I need to adjust it to 1st day of the month.. thanks for answering
Does the NH35 use a different keyless works to the NH36?
I've just been offered a seiko datejust hommage fitted with a NH 36 with the day wheel still attached but under the dial.
setting the day and date during 9pm and 4 am will break it, but if you just pop the crown out during that time or during that time you move the hour and minute hand backwards for whatever reason will that also break it?
No you can adjust the time during this period just not the date. And if you have to adjust the date in the “danger zone” for any reason simply move the hour hand back a few hours to the safe zone, adjust the date then move to the correct time
Thank you. I'm using a seiko 5 for 2 years now, didn't know the information. The date was keep messing with me repeatedly.
Is it normal that on my Seiko 5 the day of the week changes when I rotate towards me, and the day of the month when I rotate away from me?
How about if the month has 31 days then next month has 30.. will it automatically jump to 1st date?
Figured it out. I'm going to be proud of myself for the next 3-5 business days.
Why in my Seiko sports when changing day of the week the hour hand makes a little movement?
Is the Day of the week suppost to change at 3am instead of 12am like the day?
Is it a bad precaution to set the time to 6:30 before changing the day/date?
I just get a seiko 5 bilingual, the day will stay in 1 lenguaje or I will need to change it everyday?? I just bought it was set in Mon, past 12:00am midnight and 1:00 am the date changed correctly but the day was on Lun why? I change it, did break my watch?? I can’t wait to midnight to see what happen!!!
I'm confused. In other videos, Seiko 5 doesn't support hacking mechanism (second hand stop when changing the time). But it does in this vid. Which one is true?
Newer 4r36 powered Seiko 5's have hacking/hand winding .
Older seiko 5s with the 7s36 movement dont 👍

This is probably a stupid question but the days of the week.. in-between the English days.. are those just another language? If so what language?
It is another language, depends on the watch but most likely since you are asking this question it is Japanese
Is it also applicable on casio mtp-v006l-7budf , cause the date changes at midnight but day changes after few hours.
Just press down it lock. Or u have to turn until it's lock?
Okay, but the day should switch over at midnight, and mine is still stuck on yesterday. Is it simply because Seiko I done something wrong?
Is it maybe 12 hours behind/in front?
Hi please tell if you are talking about 4.10 pm or am , I am unclear on that .
Why can’t you adjust the time during those danger time zones? What if you live or travel to another country with a different time zone, is it still those times or now you’d have to adjust to the times of our country? 😅
I hope this could help.. my watch always lag 1 minute every 4 or 5 days
Hey mate, that is a completely normal part of automatic movements. Every mechanical movement will gain or lose a small amount of time each day. For the 4R36 movement it is -20 to +40 sec/day. I tend to re-set my automatic watch every few days as it will be about a minute off. Hope that helps!
I’m not able to set my day and date on the first click position, is that a technical issue? Should I get it checked?
I am facing the same issue how u doing it is it fixble
I have seen lot of vids super lengthy some saying hey you need to keep time to 6.30 .. I don’t what is the logic behind 6.30 .. whatever the time it is should not be between 9pm and 4am when changing date .. right ??
I have gmt seiko blueberry do we need to manually unwind it with crown moving in anti clockwise direction and when it pops out we wind it again then set time and date ?
A life saver. Thanks much!
What time would you recommend setting the date?
is the seiko 5 series screw down crowns? they say 100m water resistant. thanks
But how to correct month? I set my watch on the 29th of April, but now instead of Showing Monday 1, it shows Monday 31
Hey Abdul, adjusting the date at the end of 30 day months (and February) is necessary as the date wheel counts up to 31. Hope this helps
My second hand didn’t stop when I pulled it out to notch 2 ?
lmfao the odds that im watching this video on a friday the 18th lolol
My second hand isn't moving at all, how do you get it to tick
I have this watch and find it tricky to pull the crown out to the first setting, it always ends up in the second setting for advancing the hands, wish they would make this with a screw down crown instead.
what if the watch stopped at 11pm.. and you're in the morning want to change the date and time?
I set the date a day earlier and when I chaged the time it change the date to the current one at 4 o clock, what am i doing wrong
Yeah, but how do I make it stop from going to Friday, then viernes
Thankssss, easy and clear instructions 👍
can this watch be started only with the help of the watch crown?
Yes, winding the crown clockwise will charge the movement.
@@watchdepotAU how many times do I need to turn the crown to start the watch?
Tnx!
@@lazar463 Why don't you try it yourself instead of asking stupid questions?
ok, but it keeps going quickly to spanish, how do I keep the day in english??
My date is not matching with the Day, Day is always one ahead from the date. Please help
Thanks for the video brother. Huge help!
Mine is changing the date at 11:45pm is it a problem?
nah mate that's normal
how to set the seconds in my snxs77? Because when I pull the wheel to set time, the hand basicly dont stop.
Youre's has the older 7s26 seiko movement which doesnt have hand winding or second hacking
One on the video is the newer seiko 5 and has the newer 4r36 movement which has both
simple and quick. thank you very much!
First time watch owner here: I had my watch set in a different time zone when I took off on my flight and when I landed my watch read around 2:30am so I reset it unknowingly and the local time was 11:30ish pm. I am freaking out thinking I broke it now because of the no setting between midnight and 5am thing.... Anyone with experience know if my watch will be ok? I just followed this video and set it correctly with no issue. (I picked up this exact seiko 5 a few days ago)
Sorry to say man, but you'll probably have to take it to technical assistance, maybe it won't be fixed but you can try to take it.
You’ll be fine. One time doing it probably won’t break it. If you change the time on it during that window repeatedly, you may f**k the mechanism up.
How do you get it to stay on kanji?
Saat 8 deyken ayarlamaya başladın ama ayarlamayı tamamladığında 4.10 geçeye ayarladın neden ?
Thanks, super helpful!
Hi , my Dad got the same watch, tried your way but I was only able to change the time. Idk why 😢
Because he pulled the crown out to the second position. You only want to pull the crown out to first position to change day and date…
Date and time, days u need to turn clockwise direction. Always clockwise direction to keep the engine safe. If moving backward could damage them!
my snxs doesnt stop at 12 on the double click
My second hand wont stop when at 12
My new Seiko has Day + Date but also looks like Roman numerals I, II, III, IIII (4?) which display between 11pm and 1am. It's bizarre and confusing. Any idea how to turn off?
What is the model number of your seiko?
@@watchdepotAU Seiko 5 SNK617K1 Automatic
I just want it on English only days. FRI not IIII
I think I've solved it and set it to English day names. Thanks for replying
Hey. My dates aren't changing when I twist the crown?
Pull it once and turn crown clockwise for day anti clockwise for the date , pull crown a 2nd time (all the way) to set the time
Basically have 2 notches on you're crown some are less sensative than others
What’s the procedure if the watch stops between 9pm-4am?
Read your watches manual
The second Date is Japanesse or China ?
Kanji, Chinese characters, they can be both Japanese and Chinese
Not able to understand if I should not change the day/date between 9pm to 4am actual time/watch time?
It is between these times the watch starts to change the date automatically. The mechanism can get screwed up if you move the day/date manually between these times.
Of course that means the time on the watch. Essentially what you have to do is first move the hour hand to the bottom of the watch. Then set the date as he describes. Then move it forward to the correct time. The tricky part is just keeping track of whether the watch is in the am or pm as you are setting it back to the correct time. As you move it forward the date will change and the watch will be in the am, then once you make a full revolution it will be in the pm.
@@Omlet221🫡 Yes Sir!
Got the job done right. Cool video
I thought it is not recmmended to rotate the crown counter clockwise? Can someone enlighten me?
You have to , to set the day/date
Clockwise for day and anti clockwise for date
You can turn it both ways to set the time
Doesnt do it any harm just twisting it either way with crown pressed in as it winds the watch (if you have the 4r36 movement seiko)
Much appreciated 👍🏼
Very helpful, thank you
Very helpful cheers brutha
My Seiko doesn't stop when I pull it all the way out.
I didnt know about the "do not change the date between 4 and 9 " thing and i did it a little bit. How do i know if its damaged? I am freaking out thinking that i have damaged my watch
It should be fine, should be no cause for stress. However if this is done repeatedly it could cause some wear on the movement
Thanks so much
Why do you have to set the day and date one date before?
In order to set am&pm correct
thanks!
good video but i think the seiko 5 also has the winder knob at the 3 o'clock position - but a good video
Yes there are some models with the crown at 3, you're correct
Many thanks!
How to keep it to only English day?
You cant , you would need to get an english/english date wheel and modify you're movement
I set mine for english through the day and kenji at night 👍 after a year or 2 you learn what day it is in a different language 😂
Thank you❤❤
Thanks of this
Why should you set your watch one min ahead?
Awesome bro!
Perfect thankyou👍🇬🇧
thank you!
Thank u Man!
Thank you!

Thanks helped a lot
Thanks you.just buy my seiko watch
Awesome, thanks for that
I don't understand why Seiko can't just include a one page instruction sheet.
Instructions for your specific watch are on their website
Thank yoo sooo much
Thankyou

Thank you!!
I cant pull that thing
My day doesn’t change and I tried that
I’m still tripping out that my Seiko 5 has English and Spanish feature.😂
My special edition seiko does too

Wow! Its tricky!
My second hand doesnt stop at 12 when i pull to the second click, SNK381K1
Hey mate, this is perfectly normal for your watch, since it uses the 7S26 movement, which does not have hacking seconds. All this means is the second hand doesn't stop when the crown is pulled out to the second position. Hope this helps!
