Very true. I feel bad for kids now because they will never know the comradery that comes with counting up Your quarters, Hopping on Your bike, & peddling down to the local arcade & meeting up with Your friends after school & playing those big clunky cabinets. The sounds, smells, & the atmosphere. I can still recall the feeling of excitement associated with it when You got to play a new game. And when Your game was over .. it was over. You couldn't just play it until You beat it. ..
+Amiga Wolf at least the Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive port (version) moves more like the arcade original game unlike the Amiga port (version) which is or probably was a lazy rushed remake of that Atari ST port (version)
The Atari and GameBoy also uses the same theme as NES. I never would have thought that there were so many versions of Paperboy. I have the NES version. The game's really ancient. Some looks better than others though, concerning the colours and graphics.
Yeah, it was an awesome time. There was something really magical and special about games that came out back then. Why this isn't the case anymore I'm not quite sure, but it's probably a combination of things. I think that the hardware limitations back then may be part of it, since it probably forced game companies to be more creative. Also, with every new generation of systems that came out you saw a HUGE improvement! In my opinion, the golden age of gaming started around 1986 and ended in 1996.
I agree 100% thank goodness for new development and next gen consoles, but I think what made it so neat and mind-blowing was that we were actually witnessing the beginning stages of the gaming world unfold right before our eyes
I agree 100% thank goodness for new development and next gen consoles, but I think what made it so neat and mind-blowing was that we were actually witnessing the beginning stages of the gaming world unfold right before our eyes
Andy Williams sure was proud of his BBC Micro port... Seems like he put more programming effort into his signature on the title screen than on the rest of the actual game..
You're a rare breed. It always makes me happy when I come across kids like you who actually get it, but it doesn't happen often. Every once in awhile you see a newer game that is just as good as the older stuff, but it's very rare. I can only think of a handful of games that came out after 2001 that are just as good as many of the classic games from the 80's and 90's. Two of them are Tales of the Abyss' and 'Dragon Quest VIII', both of them are late PS2 era RPG's.
As Arcade Remakes only Two stand out. Game Boy ... and the N64. The DMG01 for it's arcade conversion to 8Bit and the N64 team for same game but 64Bit Style. Atari's Paperboy .. Who Love's Ya Baby....
Totally agree I quit playing Farcry 3 half way through to put all my time into playing Terraria no comparison gfx wise but in the gameplay department it beat Farcry hands down i sank 40+ hours a week into Terraria it was that good, then again I am 40 and grew up with the evolution of video games so I know how to appreciate them. Like your videos too lot of time thought and effort gone into producing them.
"SMS: Why does this look somehow better than Game Gear?" It's probably because the GameGear had lower resolution. It was a handheld system after all. Besides that, the Master System and GameGear were nearly identical hardware wise.
I believe that a SNES would have been capable of a version identical to the original arcade, a pitty that nintendo ported it to every platform except the one where it made sense.
Christopher Sobieniak it was good but i went to my local retro game shop and found a copy of PaperBoy 2 (Genis ver) retailed for 200 dollars, rediculas right?
I didn't include the Acorn Electron because it was identical to the micro & Apple 2 GS was a direct port of the C64 version. I was greatly disappointed over that. :(
I must say I never liked much this game, nonetheless the master system version looks, sounds and plays better than the original arcade if you ask me. :)
Wow - there a lot of Papeboy versions. Great video! I played C64 version to the death. But the Gameboy versions look really great. The Amiga had - pf course - the best music. The Master System sound a little bit different. And I also like the N64 version - even it's nearly a complete different game.
On the Atari ST version the newspapers were solid and would knock people over, stop moving cars and smash windows and headstones.Though I did like the arcade version where people were fighting in the street.
Generally I only do a request if they meet certain criteria. There must be 6 versions or more. They must be only for older hardware ( Meets this one ) or they must be within a series. I don't know much about the legends series but if it consists of it's original games in parts it might fell into that category. Are the games broke down into it's parts like MM 1,2,3 & such ? Also there are so many variables with stages. It could be a really complicated video. There is a lot to weigh through.
Scooter Ahlers I do agree! The handlebars are really needed for this game but the PS2 controller when playing the version on Midway Arcade Treasures feels pretty good though.
All Access Gaming True . The MAT on the PS2 (or MAME) is the closest we'll get unless you have an arcade Paperboy.. I will say (on a side note) that most trackball games work very well with a mouse. Centipede and Missile Command come to mid here. On Missile Command I actually get better scores with a mouse set to very sensitive than I do with the trackball. Same for Centipede.....
I am working on new ones. But The remakes have just been getting finished sooner. But I did say that I was going to be doing some remakes. Hold tight though. I'm shooting for a new one next week though.
Sorry for the very late response. For some reason your reply never appeared in my inbox. Yes, the Legends games are numbered, but there are only 3 in the series thus far(Legends 1, 2 and a spin-off called The Misadventures of Tron Bonne). They were working on a Legends 3 for the 3DS, but it was cancelled. It pissed off a lot of people who have been waiting over 10 years for a 3rd installment. Anyway, Legends doesn't have stages. It's an action adventure RPG of sorts, different from other MM's
I use to enjoy playing the Sega Master System version over the NES version when I was a kid. Too bad Sega didnt have a larger library of games for their 8 bit console.
Interesting that there was never an Atari 8-bit or 2600/5200/7800 version of this. (1985 was after the Tramiel purchase, so Atari and Atari Games were separate companies with different ownership, making ports of new Atari arcade games to Atari home hardware less of an obvious proposition.)
BBC Micro: Looks like ass! C64: Catchy music... Apple II: Looks horrible! CPlus/4: More colourful than C64, and yet it's much worse! ZX Spectrum: I'm blue, ba ba de ba do da! Amstrad (Homebrew): Is Paperboy on the sun? Amstrad (Elite): Nice graphics, but still looks ass. MS-DOS: A better Amstrad Elite port? Wow. Gameboy: The music is a bit off key. NES: We all know how good this port is! GBC: I see this is not a coloured in port of the original GB. GG: I don't know what to say about this one.
Do you take requests? If so, could you do Mega Man Legends at some point? There are 3 versions(PSX,N64, and PC) and I'm curious to see how they compare.
8 BIT: NES and MASTER SYSTEM 16 BIT: AMIGA and MEGADRIVE Was not aware of a late N64 version. I was not a huge fan of those late 90s PSX and N64 revivals. The only two good ones I remember were the PONG and GAUNTLET game.
I remember playing a much better dos version than the one shown here, I remember it had music and had much better graphics. Also, I have to wonder why the Master System and Game Gear versions are different, considering that they are essentially the same system.
I was thinking the same thing and that it didn't quite deliver to it's original fan base. seems like it was geared toward a younger audience and just didn't do the OG classic any solid justice, & like you definitely aren't gonna see two drunks fighting on the curbside. The arcade version was actually kinda comical back in it's day, and ahead of it's time & in soooo, many ways... However it was also created exactly for it's era, that's what makes it so great!
Which console/computer is shown from about 48 minutes to 51 minutes? The sidebars have several consoles there at the same time (PS2, PSP, GameCube, etc). JW3HH
I hear a lot of good things about of Tales of the Abyss.... But I couldn't really get into Dragon Quest.... Then again its been years so I guess its about time to try it again...
I might be fucked in the head but I want to see Rockstar or another big studio make a modern Paperboy game I don't care if there aren't paperboys anymore, set it in the 50's I don't care I just want to see it
God I sucked at this game almost as much as Ghost and Goblins. Those two games don't make me miss side scrolling games. Although paper boy was very unique. I never understood why it never switched to having the houses on the right. Then again that would make it even harder so maybe I'm glad it didn't.
SMS: Why does this look somehow better than Game Gear? Lynx: Looks like rubbish. Atari ST: Looks alright. Amiga: Can't really say much about the music. Genesis: Looks amazing! GBA: Looks like a decent port. Midway Arcade Treasures: At last the arcade version can be played at home! N64: Graphics are terrible, even for N64.
Cant believe you put the Apple version in front of the C64. The C64 could have been a LOT better given what it was capable of. Still better than the Apple port which was only slightly better than the BBC Micro.
I attempted to add it but after 8 failed attempts to get it to load I gave up. But upon further inspection I discovered it was a damn near mirrored port of the commodore 64 version. .. 0_0 .. consider Yourselves lucky. lol
Kids nowadays don't understand shit about videogames for the most part. It's pretty sad. Graphics are the most important thing to them. If the graphics don't look good enough for them, they'll refuse to play it at all. When I was a kid, the Gameplay was the most important thing. Sure, graphics always get your attention, and they do tend to make you want to play the game that much more, but in the end it's always the gameplay that determines whether you'll KEEP playing.
hearing the funky paperboy theme with the cowbell, just classic.
You guys are lucky to grow up in the 80s/90s.
Very true. I feel bad for kids now because they will never know the comradery that comes with counting up Your quarters, Hopping on Your bike, & peddling down to the local arcade & meeting up with Your friends after school & playing those big clunky cabinets. The SEGA Master System and Game Gear versions used music from Moon Patrol.
Indeed! Very nice observation =)
Thank you for this amazing video! Paperboy is one of my all-time favorite games, especially the original arcade version
Genesis version is nearly identical to the arcade. Proper graphics, background music, sound effects, and paperboy's voice.....PEREFECT!
+Scooter Ahlers yea i know what you mean sounds great.
Scooter Ahlers The graphics aren't even close to the original! What are you talking about?
Yeah your right, the graphics of the Genesis version was not even close the the Arcade version.
+Amiga Wolf at least the Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive port (version) moves more like the arcade original game unlike the Amiga port (version) which is or probably was a lazy rushed remake of that Atari ST port (version)
And that is what kept You coming back ! :D I miss those days. :(
The Amiga and arcade versions looked the best, but amazingly, the C64 version had the best soundtrack..
the Amiga version doesn’t count as a port it probably was a lazy remake of the Atari ST version
a 'Let's compare' of Paperboy 2 would be great too :)
Thank you Gaming History Source for putting all these videos on! Very Cool!
DC Wyld You're very welcome ! I hope you continue to enjoy this channel for many years to come ! :)
Commodore 64's music wasn't half bad lol.
I had this on the commodore 64.
Not the best conversion I've seen, but far from the worst I played. The C16/Plus 4 conversion was the worst. Horrible collision detection
Ah, c64 came out with some belting tunes! My fave was from a game called Uridium. Brilliant game.
A boombox in front of most houses in the Sega Master System and Game Gear versions.. I guess many people liked loud music in those versions..
The Atari and GameBoy also uses the same theme as NES. I never would have thought that there were so many versions of Paperboy. I have the NES version. The game's really ancient. Some looks better than others though, concerning the colours and graphics.

It's bad, but the worst version I played was the Commodore 16/Plus 4 version. The collision detection is god awful
The soundtrack sounds really badass on the C64 🔥
I'll finish the info & locations tomorrow. Good night folks ! :)
Spectrum version is amazing - just wish it had sound!!
It does.
You're a rare breed. It always makes me happy when I come across kids like you who actually get it, but it doesn't happen often. Atari's Paperboy .. Who Love's Ya Baby....
Paperboy In Da Hood on Commodore64!
+sf2explus you’re saying the C64 Paperboy is better than the Sega Master System version? 😆😆😆😆😆
What?
To be honest, the C64 version doesn't play half bad. The worst version I've played is the Commodore 16/Plus 4 version. Awful collision detection.
The Genesis version seemed to have gotten it right.
this is so helarious, i just love it :D
Hardcore, can't believe some dude ported this to a BBC micro. Such dedication!
I remember the Genesis version being different, and made by Tengen.
PineKushDude Ah. Thanks.
The Master System version puts the NES to shame. I didn't know there had been a Genesis one done, too--it's (naturally) even better!
In the arcade version it's one of the things He say's when He crashes.
Did not know there were two version of this for the amstrad.
most like the arcade:xbox/windows/gamecube/ps2
worst looking:N64
most suprizingest:gba

***** Looks perfect!
they made paperboy 2 on she's but not 1?
snes
It is weird indeed, still we did get Paperboy 2, which was a nice sequel.
Christopher Sobieniak it was good but i went to my local retro game shop and found a copy of PaperBoy 2 (Genis ver) retailed for 200 dollars, rediculas right?
that music is iconic
The Paperboy of the Commodore +/4 looks like he was forced to work while sick
i always loved the controller with the handlebars on the arcade version
These are the times when I wish I had a deloren.
The N64 version actually looks pretty cool!
Me too. That & the Star Wars version. I still drool to this day about that controller. :D-
The ST port is pretty impressive as are the spectrum and CPC versions of course.
I didn't include the Acorn Electron because it was identical to the micro & Apple 2 GS was a direct port of the C64 version. I was greatly disappointed over that. :(
I remember drooling on a computer magazine looking at Tandy coco screenshots but I never knew if they were real or not lol
GBA was excellent !
I must say I never liked much this game, nonetheless the master system version looks, sounds and plays better than the original arcade if you ask me. :)
oh i love this game! my favorite versions are the original and the GBA one
To bad I don't have a time machine :(
if you had a time machine what would you do? where would you go?
info is updated ! Enjoy the video folks ! ^_^
Wow - there a lot of Papeboy versions. Great video! I played C64 version to the death. But the Gameboy versions look really great. The Amiga had - pf course - the best music. C 64 always great conv.
graphically not great
in the audio yes great
HOLY BUTTS THE GRAPHICS ON THE SMS VERSION, LOOKS 16-BIT!!!!!
It was painful to play. -__-
BBC Micro, ROFL. Something about it just makes me giggle.
On the Atari ST version the newspapers were solid and would knock people over, stop moving cars and smash windows and headstones.Though I did like the arcade version where people were fighting in the street.
"REMAKE" in title is a bit misleading
Sorry about that. I referred to the video remake. I didn't want to take the original down so I added remake to the title to distinguish the two.
Also, Paperboy 2 for DOS is a completely original and a very good game, unlike the first part
Nintendo 64 version too radical dude!!!!
Generally I only do a request if they meet certain criteria. There must be 6 versions or more. They must be only for older hardware ( Meets this one ) or they must be within a series. I only didnt get, why the original gameboy version is more close to nes and way better then gameboy color and linx
I love this game! I have it's ROM for MAME and on the Midway Arcade Treasures for PS2!
All Access Gaming So do I but Paperboy has very unique controls. Joystick is OK but the arcade handlebar controls are what you NEED for this game!
Scooter Ahlers I do agree! The handlebars are really needed for this game but the PS2 controller when playing the version on Midway Arcade Treasures feels pretty good though.
All Access Gaming True . The MAT on the PS2 (or MAME) is the closest we'll get unless you have an arcade Paperboy..

so many versions , they should make one in the style of bully , maybe with a skate bored and roller blades as well.
wow ! Very similar ! I never noticed !
Sorry for the very late response. For some reason your reply never appeared in my inbox.

"It needs to have more cowbell"
I never saw the N64 version before.... looks quite different, yet somehow pretty neat.
I noticed something paperboy and spring championships arcade cabinet looks exactly the same
But and the super nintendo
Do you take requests? If so, could you do Mega Man Legends at some point? There are 3 versions(PSX,N64, and PC) and I'm curious to see how they compare.

Clearly Paperboy is running some kind of racket.
I remember playing a much better dos version than the one shown here, I remember it had music and had much better graphics. Also, I have to wonder why the Master System and Game Gear versions are different, considering that they are essentially the same system.
i cant hear the amiga version good
Paperboy from Atari Games. 1985. Where the hell ist the Atari 8bit (XL/XE) port? O_o
this N64 version seems lame but interesting....
I was thinking the same thing and that it didn't quite deliver to it's original fan base. seems like it was geared toward a younger audience and just didn't do the OG classic any solid justice, & like you definitely aren't gonna see two drunks fighting on the curbside. Um, you do know you can knock over the tombstones with the papers, right? (and shoot all different things with them as well)
Why is this version of the game playing the music from William's Electronics "Moon Patrol" instead of the paperboy music?
the genesis and gba variants are pretty incredible
Especially the voice samples.
Looks like the arcade version was the best one out of all of em.
I enjoyed busting many a window when I was a kid playing this game
To be fair, your showing a amstrad cpc remake. The original cpc version is full colour, alas with no sound effects or music.
Which console/computer is shown from about 48 minutes to 51 minutes? The sidebars have several consoles there at the same time (PS2, PSP, GameCube, etc).
JW3HH
look at it, at 47:50 & you'll have your answer. ;)
Ahh... i remember those times, too... Hey, wait a second! I'm from Germany, so this never happened! I think i have seen to many american movies... ;-)
Never heard of N64 version, look very..interesting.
I hear a lot of good things about of Tales of the Abyss.... But I couldn't really get into Dragon Quest.... Then again its been years so I guess its about time to try it again...
I might be fucked in the head but I want to see Rockstar or another big studio make a modern Paperboy game
I don't care if there aren't paperboys anymore, set it in the 50's I don't care I just want to see it
The best version... The arcade one.
LOL that's why i never took that job when i was a kid ~_^
God I sucked at this game almost as much as Ghost and Goblins. Those two games don't make me miss side scrolling games. Although paper boy was very unique. I never understood why it never switched to having the houses on the right. Then again that would make it even harder so maybe I'm glad it didn't.
Atari ST version was awesome.

What happened to the excellent Atari 800xl version?

3:48 A Sinclair C5? Now I know this is a British port.
