Because of inexplicable patriotic sentiments, Chinese businessmen here have been physically harmed and many have left. It is no longer as prosperous as it once was.
@@charlxzirl In 1999, I followed a Chinese company to build a hydroelectric power plant in Nigeria. At that time, the security situation in Nigeria was very bad, with numerous criminal activities against foreigners. Westerners, as well as Chinese and Koreans, only dared to stay in luxury hotels. To attract Chinese investors, the Nigerian government at the time allowed the Chinese to build a separate Chinese wholesale market there. At most, there were a few thousand Chinese there, and at the time it was the largest wholesale market in the African region. I met President Azikiwe Jonathan, who shook my hand once, and he was a very kind and gentle man. After the 2012 presidential election, Nigeria experienced a series of chaotic events. Protests in the north, Muhammadu Buhari, Boko Haram. The Nigerian Immigration Service detained nearly 100 Chinese for "illegally trading textiles in Nigeria" and more than a hundred Chinese businessmen were arrested. We were scared and left Nigeria. Most of us went to Angola and Ghana, Ethiopia. Now it's been 12 years since I left Nigeria, and I don't know what the situation is there, but basically no Chinese people I know have ever gone back.
@@charlxzirl Under the wise leadership of President Yar'Adua, the Nigerian economy grew at a high rate in 2002, at one point as high as 15 per cent, a rarity in the world. After 2012, everything changed and it is now in negative growth. It is very sad.
@@charlxzirl it is not true! In a city as big as Lagos with huge population, yet you are seeing many Chinese daily, and they are also in other parts of the country - do you think that it would be possible if there were only 8000?!?!
