The jaws of the Leviathan: by Nature Video

  • The fossilized skull and jaw of a giant, 12--13 million-year-old sperm whale have been discovered off the coast of Peru. The creature, whose discovery is reported in this week's Nature, belongs to a previously unknown genus of sperm whale and has been named in honour of Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick.
    The fossil was found in ocean layers where the giant shark has also been recorded and the authors suggest that these two giant, raptorial predators could have lived in the same area, feeding on large, marine vertebrates, such as baleen whales.

    We cannot really say which one is bigger. The biggest in a few thousands of megalodons almost certainly outsize Livyatan. Similarly, Livyatan almost certainly outsizes the smallest megs. Much more is difficult to say because it depends on the varying figures existing for both, but this is no orca/gws-situation were the whale simply has a significant size advantage that it employs effectively to dispatch its prey.

    Livyatan Melvillei was close match for normal megalodon, but large populations of female megalodons were on average size 15 to 16 meters long and weighed 40 to 50 tons. The most reasonable estimate for Livyatan Melvillei is 16 metres long, weighing 50 tons, and even the megalodon, which is 16 metres long, is enough to make Livyatan Melvillei feel the strain. So far, the reasonably largest megalodon is 20 to 21 meters long and weighs 90 to 100 tons, fully twice the size of Livyatan Melvillei, which is still no match for the large individual and the largest individual megalodon. At the same size and weight, Livyatan Melvillei already couldn't deal with megalodon anymore.

So until we discover a multiheaded sea dragon, this animal is as good a representation of Leviathan as any. Gigantism and dwarfism in marine mammalian species is fascinating. This monster is more than I can imagine, but how this happens makes me wonder if we are missing something important when these fossils get classified? Evolution aside; how did it get so big? The diet of such lifeforms must have been ravenous?

    @pyroman1000k He never said anything about old being correct. He just said that they always thought it was big. Read the article about megalodon's size on wikipedia. Before saying something like it's inaccurate, the information there is basically a combination of all the things we know about it. It's reverted back to normal if someone changes it and the things they add are inaccurate. Actually read the whole page

    By the way for all the people who doesn't know, this is talking about a Sperm Whale species ' *Livyatan* Melvillei' not 'Leviathan' from the bible

    • @fromnorway643
      @fromnorway643 2 роки тому +1

      *_Leviathan_* was the first name given to that whale, but it was soon changed to *_Livyatan_* when the discoverers found out that Leviathan already was the so-called junior synonym of the genus _Mammut_ in the family Mammutidae, containing the rather primitive proboscideans known as *_mastodons._*
      This is quite confusing since the true mammoths belong to the genus _Mammuthus_ in the family Elephantidae and are thus much closer related to modern elephants.

    What I’d like to know is, where can you find Livyatan teeth? Megalodon teeth are easy to find, like beaches, diving in coastal areas and old ancient river beds, but where do you find Livyatan teeth? Is there any other place other than Perú? It seems their more rare than megalodon teeth.

  • @animalwarz
    @animalwarz 14 років тому

    @pyroman1000k I know but a 7 inch tooth would definately be from a 60 foot individual. 7 inches is about 2.8 times the size of a great whites' tooth but 60 feet is less than 2.8 times the size of the tooth so if it did have large teeth in comparison to body, it would be 60 feet at smallest for a Megallodon. I honestly don't think that it would have large teeth in relation to body size. It's more likely for it to have smaller teeth in comparison to body.

    @pyroman1000k seriously 13 meters to 15 meters? If the largest Megalodon tooth so far is 3 times the size of a great whites tooth what makes you think it couldn't have been 67 feet long? 60 feet is the smallest possible size for a shark with 7 inch teeth

    @sukruoosten im not exactly aware of what you are talking about cause this video has nothing to do with reptiles or anything covered in scales but what you said is amazingly inccorect. i mean i get that a t rex is big an all but trying to say it could have gone into a place like this or anyware in teh ocean that is deeper than lets say an estimated 20ft is just stupid. they didnt know how to swim because there brain is like the size of a walnut and there arms were stubby so....thoery disproved

    @pyroman1000k ... i have mine? while i was commenting to you i read up on dozens of sources to make sure i did not remember the wrong thing, or if there has come new knowledge in the field i was unaware of... but i will find the site and see if there is a size estimate there based off vertebrae as you say... if it does not then you will bother me no more with your nonsense and faulty logic... and then do as i say and read some updates sources.

  • @Procrastinater
    @Procrastinater 14 років тому

    @pyroman1000k . no, i said that the wrong 25-30 meter estimate stood as science for a long time, then someone said "hold on, it actually rly small" around year 2000, and the controversial statement gave attention to those who made it. then someone went back and looked at the findings and facts without tented lenses and concluded that the most accurate estimates were not the newer ones. as for your analogies, they have no place in this discussion, after your blatant lie, you should be more humble

  • @Procrastinater
    @Procrastinater 14 років тому

    @pyroman1000k and you're very very wrong, for the longest time scientists believed meg to be huge, then some suggested it was not, and became famous for it... then some reminded them that their work had flaws and currently the 20.3 or w/e it was stands as the most accepted max estimate... if you can't accept that then you're not an inquisitive person, just a person with a bias. live and learn, what you read is not always true.
    as for the skeleton, you filthy liar... i lost all respect for you

  • @Procrastinater
    @Procrastinater 14 років тому

    @pyroman1000k an orca can't produce a serious wound on a 12-15 meter whale.. a sperm whale have a huge layer of blubber that must be overcome, an orca's jaw is not that impressive to puncture veins in an adult sperm whale, a cub maybe. you should link to the vid showing that incident-
    as for the playing point, whats your point? we're discussing orca's ability to take on a full grown meg, i just ment to say that orca's usually feed on seals and small whales like dolphins etc

  • @Procrastinater
    @Procrastinater 14 років тому

    @pyroman1000k what? rays are shark, and they eat concealed fish 24/7 other sharks don't bother with them as they have other prey items... and i have never heard of a dolphin using sonar to find a fish so i wont comment on that.
    and it only happened in one documented incident, the whaler essex i believe was sunk by a sperm whale, of course fisherman stories would arise from such an incident .... its not rocked science.

  • @Procrastinater
    @Procrastinater 14 років тому

    @pyroman1000k what has the BBC mishap to do with meg? honestly .. you must be slightly daft. the guy who probably write what you read, Clifford Jeremiah, said that meg was about 15 meters long based off the largest tooth he had in his possession, problem being that far larger teeth exist and his method is a pretty basic one, where one add ft length per in length of tooth. again, gottfried has the most accepted method and he suggested a max size of 67 feet (20 m) and 16 m based off a 6.6 in tooth
