Sometimes it’s tricky to know how to feel about a tie. This Saturday, after an enormously impressive first 40 by the All Blacks, England clicked in a way not seen for three years- So what did we learn about the two teams, and how should they each feel after a bizarre 25-25 day?

Nobody need have worried, there were some crusaders players who are at conspiracy theory level for their unfounded favour lavished upon them by NZ rugby journalists. Richie starting, David at all, Codie being on the field for more than 40 minutes. It's a bias but, then again New Zealand has to signal their virtues and favour the heartbroken Christchurch people.

They have been doing this forever, it means they can take the ball basically on the gain line instead of back 10.
Surprised squidge didn’t stop this as he made a previous video about how they attack off the line out.

I don't know why but it really moves me to see Beauden Barrett having a good chat with Farrell and his kids after seeing them as rivals since JWC. Same with Whitelock and getting the NZ boys to present him with a bottle of NZs finest wine.

Great analysis and I think you rightly point out that England aren’t out of contention for the World Cup. However, this review felt very one sided. I understand your glowing review of England’s structure but I do think it’s important for you to have stressed a bit more the fact that it was against 14 men after the 70th minute at which point there’s naturally a lot more space to exploit and tires bodies. Don’t think that’s enough to say that “it clearly works” and is a World Cup winner. Will be interesting to see what happens in the 6 nations!

England are underated as potential world cup winners for the simple reason that they have by far the easiest schedule out of all the real favorites. Poule D will be a lot of fun and Argentina and Japan will be very dangerous but losing to both of them would be a major shock. Then there is a quarter final against a team from a historically weak group. Wales and Australia are looking poor and nobody would be surprised if Georgia or Fiji qualify for the knockout stage. After that follows a semi final against a team that comes from the side of the schedule that has all the other "big" teams and will have had much tougher games. At that point in the competition attrition is a big factor. So England can easily reach the final without needing to play exceptional rugby or actually be one of the two best teams in the competition. Furthermore: no Eddy Jones team has ever underperformed at a World Cup, so the will be well prepared.

I think Ireland and France are definitely peaking at the wrong time. It's less of an issue for France, they're the host nation, playing insanely well with great defence and have a wealth of young talent (even if Ntamack and Dupont have been average by their standards, they still beat Aus and RSA playing very poorly). Ireland are similar but they didn't look that convincing in any of their 3 matches, I suspect they could drop 1 or 2 games during the 6 Nations. I actually think South Africa are in a good place and will always be good in a World Cup in France, particularly if they sort out their fly-half and find someone who can actually slot goals. Providing Etzebeth, Marx and co play like freaks, their physicality will be very threatening.

Ardie Savea was magnificent as was Papalii. I liked Moo’unga too what a player.

Really fluffing that English subscriber base hard now, huh?
The ABs were a shambles for most of the match; kicked poorly, erratic in attack and patchy on defense, still England couldn't score a point, or even look like getting any for long stretches. Neither of Will Stuart's tries would've stood outside Twickenham (even he knew he dropped the second one),, and if not for Raynal's fussy and increasingly baffling interventions, Barrett's yellow in final minutes and a shoddy showing by NZs bench, the ABs could well have left HQ with a 30-point win.
Eddie's masterplan may be ingenious, but there's scant evidence that the team have either the brains, the talent or the discipline to execute it under any conditions besides a wide open field. The examples shown against Italy rather reinforce this idea, as do their defeats against Australia and Argentina. Far from being compelling evidence of impending English world cup honors, it suggests they may have a battle not emulate their 2015 counterparts.

I was at the millennium stadium watching Wales Vs NZ and in the warm up the ABs made a deliberate effort of sliding as far as possible before forming a ruck on each carry. There were 2 or 3 overlaps against NZ in their 22 that Squidge doesn't mention. Both Farrell and Smith calling for the ball with their hands in the air and not getting it. So the attack would have worked more, but the forwards kept having one carry too many (at least). This is an Eddie Jones learning for me. He is so gainline obsessed that the players aren't thinking, +1 metre is considered a victory regardless of scenario. I also think the strategy in the 22, until the last 10 minutes, was very predictable. Attempt a maul, move nowhere, 5 phases of forwards bash until they give away a pen or NZ get a turnover...which annoyed English forwards who then gave away a pen. They just need to trust the backs and the system more and move the ball once they have go forward. They showed they can do it in the last 10. If they did it more often in the 22, it could have been a 10 point + victory against NZ.

I personally think England made the best decision here. Because an almost win against the All Blacks will always be seen as a loss on any stat record so if they had decided to go for a couple more points, it could have easily lost them the match.
However, a draw against the ABs is not common and is also seen as an achievement. When people go to see this rarity on replays or highlights they will then watch the match and realise that on the 70th minute England were sitting at 6-25 which will then show them up to being even more amazing against the All Blacks.
If however England had lost the match, the game would have fallen into the archives of more matches ABs won and would not have had any attention drawn to it, despite the impressive last 10 minutes.
Thus Smith made the right decision.

I was very confused about the vocal outpouring to the contrary over social media. looking back at this now i genuinely think we would have had a good shot at winning, but it was probably for the best eddie ended up going, perhaps a year too early, and after the wc, but it cant be helped. with borthwick i would of happily taken a bad six nations this year to get this years results next year.
(i think eddie is trying to get revenge, deliberately losing to wales in the wc to try place second in order to knock england out, and again the japan job just as England go visit them to show us what could have been)
i don't think we have seen anything of this intensity since at except for possibly the france sa game, which to be honest i think the french have nicked some of the tactics england used in the last 10 and used them then, also seen in this years six nations england france game by the french once again.

No comment on the very harsh yellow on Barrett; the off the ball on Moanga that allowed the first of the three in 9mins.
Or the missed yellow/red card for genge’s no arms head on head on whitelock.

@@patrickchilds2987 what for not releasing? Listen to the to commentary for starters, Flatman “not entirely sure what Barrett’s done wrong here”. Missed yellow/red was in the first half about 20-25mins in from memory. Genge and Billy make a tackle and Genge doesn’t wrap and collides heads with whitelock. Crazy the TMO misses it, the crowd groaned.

Post-game comment after S.A.'s win - So Eddies Jones did use again his new "2 pods" offensive tactic after all, and was visibly outsmarted by the South-African staff. S.A. defence adapted and prevented that play to click on the pitch. It was maybe doomed to happen, especially against good defences (and 2022 All Black defences is really bad), as it is very new. However, you don't win a game with one or 2 tricks - which seems to be the trademark of E.J.'s coaching - you need a global game strategy. S.A. has one and is adding new dimensions to it, France has one even if it lacks (or maybe they, actually, hide part of it), Ireland of course has one too. England, like New-Zealand, seems at lost. Now the World Cup is in ten month and N.H. countries will have the 6 Nations T. to hone their tactics and strategy. And who knows, England is quite lucky to start the World Cup in a very weak pool, and they may have just 2 difficult games to win their 2nd trophy. E.J. gimmicks might be enough after all. I still really hope that we'll see England potential being tap into, because, Ugh, it is such a shame to see those brilliant players playing this kind of rugby.

I love what you do Squidge but after this Autumn I sadly can't believe in Eddie's England masterminding a RWC win. Semis is our limit.
Only with the omnipresent Beauden B. carded and the assumption that we'd already lost could we lay a glove on a tired third-gear AB's at Twickenham.

  • @branmaher6684

Great analysis, but lets be honest, the All blacks defended poorly in the last 10 mins and didn't adjust to being down a man which resulted in Englands tries.. The ABs subs didn't perform and were out-muscled by Englands replacements. The refs decision to disallow the Reiko try for a "neck roll" was extremely lucky for England, if that's allowed its game over before the second half. It was edge of the seat rugby making it a great game to watch.

The draw has to leave a sour taste in England's mouth, surely. On the verge of completing an epic comeback and instead they opt to kick it out. What for? Just to make sure they didn't "technically" lose? What does that say about their confidence and self-belief? Kinda gutless.

Everything after the yellow card is a waste of time trying rationalise the English defence. I think the Boks just showed that the English attack is only good when the stars align. Unfortunatly for that to happen for a full 90 without the defence suffering from a yellow or red card is near impossible. Egland will be lucky to get a P3 in the 6 nations

South africa deserved the win better side on the day but that Eben try that was given was very poor by the officiating team. a knock on, offside and playing the ball from the ground take your choice - can only immagine the expletives that would be comming from the SA coach if that were against him.

NZ dominated England for 70mins during that hole time England never looked like scoring until that yellow card but credit to England for taking advantage but come on you decided to kick out for a draw, yeah people say it was a great comeback from England and that they didn’t give up and did well to get the draw, I disagree they did give up because they didn’t want to win the game, it should of been practice for a knock out game but looks like England don’t have that winning mentality and would rather settle for a draw🤔

With respect, this is nonsense. England are not on the cusp of some great attacking play. We are currently conceding more than we ever have before, scoring less than we ever have and went into negative points difference for the first time ever in the 6N. We look like we could be finishing this year with more losses than wins for the first time in ages. Jones is not on the verge of some great breakthrough, he has utterly destroyed the team.
