10:04 as a Canadian huge rugby and hockey fan let me put into perspective the type of praise Squidge is giving Dupont: Gretzky is the all time points leader in NHL history ( you get 1 point for an assist or a goal): If you took away all of Gretzky's career goals he would STILL be the all time points leader. Attended the game on Saturday and whilst I was disappointed as an Ulsterman to see Leinster (Ireland in Blue) lose yet another Champions Cup final, my disappointment was immediately overcome by gratitude at witnessing such an amazing spectacle. Two of Europe's best sides playing an unbelievable standard of rugby in an incredible arena, and Dupont, possibly the greatest ever player, putting on an absolute masterclass. Marvellous analysis as always Squidge, you are an asset to rugby union coverage.
Toulouse supporters and French rugby analysts aren't blindly hyping Antoine and the other Toulouse players, they made some errors, were lucky in some cases not to be sanctionned by the ref. It was so close for both sides, a few centimeters or tents of a second to win the match. The number of HIA and wounded on the Toulouse side shows the intensity required and the solidarity in this team. Kudos to Kinghorn and Willis, the new Toulouse players who were crucial for this win.
Has any rugby team ever been more stacked in a single position than Toulouse at 15? Ramos, Kinghorn, Capuozzo and Mallia means they have the first choice fullback for half the top 8 countries in the world.
These players are versatile: Ramos played also as 10 when N'Tamack couldn't, Kinghorn winger, Malia all back posts, Capuozzo winger. All are internationals in different teams, that means during the 6 nations only Malia is there, so if he is wounded, is a young player ready to fulfill the role?
Exactly! Which is often disregarded or simply not analysed enough it seems. Toulouse is indeed the richest club in the rugby world with around 50 millions in budget but they are also a treadmill of wonderful players in every positions. As a Frenchman I've raged about this flaw in our game for years with no improvement, surprised every time the opponent didn't exploit it. The boks finally did, so between the WC and this very close final, I hope it's a wake up call for French rugby.
Leinster attacking the blindside a lot was a strong strategy, the problem was it was with a Scarecrow of a 10 with no pace. As soon as Frawley came on, first blindside attack Leinster made 15 yards

It's scary how good both these teams played. In spite of the loss there is only improvement to come for Leinster though. Well done, and commiserations
what a unfair advantage the springboks will have with @Squidge Rugby assisted with analyzing teams attack and defense patterns. Best out there from a SAFFA love the videos and the insights you guys provide!
As you say, it might have been a tactical masterclass by Nienaber, but stubbornly choosing to go for the corner instead of taking the 3 points was a big strategic mistake. Ireland were cocky enough to do it against the AB in the 1/4 final, they did it again against Scotland in the Six Nations and butchered so many scoring opportunities... and again this week-end. When are they going to learn to take the points in tight games?
My guess is that as Toulouse had scored 45 tries to leinsters 29 before this match, Leinster felt they were gonna likely cough up a few tries so felt they’d have to score a few to win. And when it wasn’t working they didn’t adjust correctly.
To be fair to them, the first championship cup they lost to LAR, they had the exact opposite issue. They took the points when they should’ve backed themselves in the corner. I don’t think the decision to go to the corner was a bad one. They know they’re good at it, and in Nienabar’s post match interview he said that there were actually only 4 kickable penalties. The real issue was that Ross Byrne just didn’t get enough out of each kick to corner. We were consistently too far from the 5 metre line and Toulouse could just stick a jumper in the lineout to interfere. No doubt in my mind we’d have scored the tries had we kicked deeper.
Ireland had to do it against nz as nz had a big lead early on and were tearing Ireland apart every time they had the ball. Not really comparable to Leinster who were close on the scoreboard and should have taken the 3x
22:50 forward pass... Cant argue the result. Elite level ball will always be close. These are the teams we want to face when all the chips are down. Heartbreaking in the blue jersey, but we will come again. We where toulouse's la rochelle. Big day for them. On we go
Squidge, interested to hear your thoughts and especially now after Duponts crazy turnover stats. DdA's try in minute 17:35 against FRA in the RWC QF 2024. Granted PSdT was flying in, Dupont had the opportunity at 17:30min to attempt a steal on the ground from DdA. How much of an impact do you think his fractured jaw played in him not going for it? PSdT was allowed to pick and go which ultimately lead to the try. Thanks for your time in creating world class rugby analysis... every time!!!

Great stuff Squidge, I do wonder if the guys in real time are as able see the whole pitch/layout as you depict in all instances, seems almost impossible. I'm surprised you didn't mention the turnovers at all - seems a huge factor in the game. Well done by both teams, a great game, thin margins.
Great analysis as always. Despite of how good Toulouse was, Leinster could still have won it with Frawley's 80th minute drop goal attempt, and I thought they were extremely unlucky that both Byrne and Frawley got injured. It does seem like a curse for sure!
It's really sad but the Irish boys are really great at falling at the last hurdle. These records seem stick in their minds. Ireland... dominant until it matters... Leinster are exactly the same. The belief will be hard to build the longer it lasts.
Toulouse well deserved the win, and Leinster played great and you could see the massive saffa influence from Niembar but it was figured out by Toulouse. I don't think Leinster will make the final next year in Cardiff. Maybe it's not a bad thing, focus on the URC and build a champions winning team in the mean time?
I don't know if you try to cut back some time on the final edit sqeezing out some analysis, but if you do, i wouln't mind an extra 10 minutes of this quality !
Anti Irish rugby fans won’t record it. A team where 56/60 of their squad are home grown make it to several finals, and are only just beaten by galactico teams who bought their players will be deliberately disregarded as “bottlers” by bitter fans
I definitely don’t criticise Toulouse at all - or La Rochelle, Saracens, etc. Leinster have too many advantages of their own to complain. And all of the finals, save perhaps 2019 against Saracens, came down to really fine margins. Proud of the team and management - just sorry for them that they don’t have more medals to show for this period.
Aye it is a shame, 3 finals unrealised in a row can't be good for morale anyway you slice it. Its also a record for this competition and not a good one. I think Leo Cullen is officially under pressure in keeping his job. The decision to not kick more when they had many many chances to do so - ouch. Especially how it came down in the end. I don't leinster should stop their attacking style, no way, it's great to watch, it's exciting but they need to work on their balance of taking the kicks vs the corner. They still have a brilliant pedigree, you'd have to to keep it up against toulouse for 90 minutes but it does feel like there's a change required somewhere.
It is extremely annoying knowing that Leinster would have two finals in a row if they didn’t play Byrne over Frawley. There has to be something dodgy around father sponsoring the Leinster team
Leinster fans were furious about Carley’s performance. Just like twelve months ago they were furious about Peyper (v La Rochelle). Just like a week before that they were furious about Frank Murphy (v Munster). It’s so upsetting they keep getting referees who don’t let them just win. A very deep conspiracy.
In 2022 and 2023 Leinster were dominating everyone and playing amazing rugby but just bottled the finals . This year felt completely different. They’ve been playing poor attacking rugby all year and were lucky to even make the final. Poor display vs Leicester which was bailed out by Gibson park’s individual brilliance and very poor vs Northampton in the semi. The only game they looked good in was vs a tired La Rochelle side. Even in the big urc games Leinster were hapless vs Ulster twice .

Top 3 Toulouse players during this game :
1-Dupont
2-Willis
3-Ntamack
4. Kingprawn
Pretty much all the Toulouse players who served the full 100 mins were exceptional.
that 50/22 from Dupont was soul destroying.
What a player
Toulouse scored more points than Leinster - for me that was the key factor.
Great analysis as always. Despite of how good Toulouse was, Leinster could still have won it with Frawley's 80th minute drop goal attempt, and I thought they were extremely unlucky that both Byrne and Frawley got injured. It does seem like a curse for sure!
Is anyone else getting scared that Dupont keeps improving? He's going to get too powerful and just fully transcend mortal bounds
amazing vid !
great video!
Napoleon was NOT short.
listening at 75% speed (easier for me to understand but also... more dramatic)
Banger de fou
Squidge are you going to make a video on the pacific 4s at all considering the historic result?
Top Work
Robbie! Love your stuff as always but where is the video on Larochelle from last year? :((
We made one but it got taken down by EPCR during the World Cup for some reason and we didn't notice at the time. Frustrating to notice afterwards.
@@SquidgeRugby I was wondering why I couldn’t find it anymore - very very frustrating from World Rugby indeed! That video was also great
It's really sad but the Irish boys are really great at falling at the last hurdle. These records seem stick in their minds. Ireland... dominant until it matters... Leinster are exactly the same. The belief will be hard to build the longer it lasts.
The Squarespace is my favourite type of rick rolling
Toulouse well deserved the win, and Leinster played great and you could see the massive saffa influence from Niembar but it was figured out by Toulouse.
I don't think Leinster will make the final next year in Cardiff. Maybe it's not a bad thing, focus on the URC and build a champions winning team in the mean time?
Huge fan. Can you please, PLEASE, do a “So how did Glasgow lift the URC?” Video ???
I don't know if you try to cut back some time on the final edit sqeezing out some analysis, but if you do, i wouln't mind an extra 10 minutes of this quality !
Leinster have been the best team in European over the last six years. But history likely won’t record it.
Anti Irish rugby fans won’t record it. A team where 56/60 of their squad are home grown make it to several finals, and are only just beaten by galactico teams who bought their players will be deliberately disregarded as “bottlers” by bitter fans
It happens
Toulouse are as much home grown as Leinster, and what do you make of Lowe and Gibson Parks, aren't they galacticos ?
They still have a brilliant pedigree, you'd have to to keep it up against toulouse for 90 minutes but it does feel like there's a change required somewhere.
hit the notification harder than Kinghorn hit his nose against Harlequins' attack
Kinghorn was amazing in the final btw. Looking forward to seeing him bring this game to internationals
Ross Byrne is simply not good enough at this level, Frawley should be starting from now on.
It is extremely annoying knowing that Leinster would have two finals in a row if they didn’t play Byrne over Frawley. There has to be something dodgy around father sponsoring the Leinster team
Frawley is much better. Better minerals. His drop kick was brilliant even though he missed.
Weird how Dupont "bends the rules" rather than breaks them
Lmao you are the only one to say that
Cmon leinster!
I think the Dupont of website can win 6 stars to validate Toulouse 6th European title.
Btw, great focus on Chocobares on Lebel try ❤
Hit the notification harder than Leinster bottle finals
How many finals you been in??

Leinster/Ireland if we're talking quarter finals.
Lebel gives that ball to Roumat and there is no extra time....
Leinster is Clermont, with 4 extra european titles
Can you do a vid on the popularity of rugby in Madagascar?
Merci .
Jacques tactics worked against France in the World Cup, but Toulouse are France, plus Jack Willis
Ntamack was injured against the Boks btw
His tactical game was very sound. His team got beat because DuPont went Super Saiyan
Well helped with poor performance of Ben O'Keefe and TMO
Could you cover Top14 finals?
Jack Willis deserves to be man of the match!
hail King Blairhorn
Leinster are rugby's version of Arsenal
That is a great back handed compliment
Arsenal reaching 3 CL finals in a row, having already won 4? No comparison.
Piss poor line kicking (when opting not to kick at goal) - it a thing……for a while
