When I took my Swedish CDL test I hooked the kingpin incorrectly, I think I forgot to raise the air on the car, so I was too low to hook on properly. I had seen this once during driving school, and I identified the issue right away, I tried to pull away once then told the driver tester I needed to disconect and do again, pulled the pin out by hand and pulled off, raised the car and tried again, and connected properly. Once in the car with him I nervously asked if I had already failed, he said he wasn't technically allowed to say but then seeing how nervous I was told me I hadn't, because they want to see that you understand the issue and know how to fix it, not necessarily get everything perfect on first try. Steve, again I'm thoroughly impressed. You instruct your students step by step, to follow directions to a science, correct them and explain why, all while allowing the student just enough freedom to think for themselves to better internalize mentally what they are doing each step of the way. I wish our school had a more designed approach to learning this craft. There's a lot of things you're doing here, and a lot of markings and cones that I'm assuming most schools aren't using. There's many good truck drivers at these schools. I'm learning more and more that there isn't nearly as many good instructors. Maybe their own school administration is holding them back from acquiring the neccessary TEACHING skills that should be required to instruct students properly. Either way, the student suffers for it, and the instructors will have tougher days in being successful with what they teach, more than is neccessary. Lastly, you're encouragement is genuine and your student corrections are direct, yet professional. Very impressive.
Cannot thank you enough for your kind words. Please keep me updated on your progress. Was you able to do the offset to the left? Mirrors properly adjusted. Do your setup- turn the steering wheel to the right fully. Backing up looking into the left mirror stop when the tractor is about at a 45 degree angle. Your instructor can help you with this. Also in your left mirror, you can see the trailer heading to the left. Next follow up with the right and back up until you can see the left trailer tires . You are now straight. If needed, make any adjustments going backwards. In the right mirror, you should be able to do the left line. Back up until the left trailer tire is just over the line. ( also once again, if space between the cone and the line is large- make the needed adjustments. Now the left tire is a little over the line - hard left to bring the tractor trailer into the left lane. Use your pull up If needed .

On day one, I ask if anyone ever or knows how to back a small utility trailer or RV. Those students will learn all skills in 5 days. After that more advanced backing skills.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor wow 5 days sounds fast. My dad taught me how to back a trailer on the job. First time I ever tried was at a property we were working on in the sand and around two corners. I have been struggling at school getting the truck straight after I come out the box and get up to the green cones. My trailer always ends up crooked to the left then I’m not lined up properly to do the reverse offset. At the MVA test, do they let you straighten out your trailer before you back up to do the reverse offset if you are crooked?
If you are not straight, you will have to back up Then pull up straight and you will get a point. That skill, there is no free back-ups. When your right tire goes between the cone and the line, go a little to the right then start straightening out. Where are you testing at?
@@sheilacooper8190 right mirror is properly positioned. Right most rear trailer tire is between the cone and the hash mark. Now steer to the right getting the trailer almost straight then steer back to the left and get straight. Many students pull out to the left and can see the cone and the hash mark before the rear right tire has crossed the hash mark. As soon as see the cone and hash mark, the student is already moving to the right and by the time they reach the cone and hash mark, they are almost straight.

@@whatupdawg281 NO. As long as the trailer is fairly straight, it should not be an issue. If the tractor trailer is facing to the left and not straight, that may be a problem. Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV 🔴 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. @@whatupdawg281 cones are not required on the outside boundary as long as the lines are clearly marked. Some testing sites have cones and the lines. As an examiner, I have used cones when I am testing.
I assume you are referring to backing into the alley. After you do your forward off- tracking skill, you should be straight and parallel to the outermost boundary line (to your left). You blow your horn and the examiner explains the final skill. You can do your setup where you can at. A true offset back. Or you can back up until your right trailer tires is aligned with the cones. Don’t go to far past the cones. ( just near it).
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor thank you for the reply I test on the 23 my manuever is what I fear screwing up but have it pretty down so far thanks again.
Do you not have them execute the mandated fmcsa eldt maneuvers?? Or just the modernized testing maneuvers?? How many driving hours do your students get on the road while training??
Modernized range skills. I do teach Alley Docking and advanced backing skills. Drop and hooks. Want all my students to get over 12 hours of driving time. If the school says only 45 minutes, I will put down 45 minutes and have them drive for over an hour. I want my students to get quality driving time.
When the student was doing the set up ( for the offset) backing into the lane to the right. He needed to backup At until the tractor was close to a 45 degree angle. Few ways to do this, one way - turn the steering wheel to the left. Backing up until he sees the center of the front of the trailer. ( we may place a mark on the front). In the left driver mirror.
Are you supposed to be looking at the big mirror or the small one on the right side(passenger side) when swinging back in to place your far right trailer tires on or in between the line and cone?
The big mirror- but still, a driver uses all mirrors if necessary. There is a video on why students encroach on the right side of the alley ( that is only 12 feet wide). See the overhead view.
Certain instructors at the school that I'm currently at just leave it up to us to do it on our own then certain ones tell us step by step what to do which pretty much teaches us nothing. I'm really struggling badly with this and wish I had found a school with instructors like this cuz I think I would grasp it much easier cuz right now the way things are going I'm not sure I'm even going to get my CDL A at this point.
A good CDL instructor will teach - let the student try a skill on his own - if necessary more instruction. Telling a student every turn of the steering wheel is not teaching. If a student drifts to the left and does not fix it, I say STOP 🛑. Ask the student What went wrong? How would you correct the drift on your next try? Now take a deep breath and let’s do it again.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor yesterday my instructor told me this may not be the career for me completely discouraging me. I'm not giving up but I'm starting to feel hopeless. Reverse offset. Backing back into the alley. ( looks like a blind side parallel park). The driver will put the rear bumper into the three feet box. That will be test number four. You will be fine
The convex mirror should not have to be adjusted. The big mirrors on the right and left side, you should be able to clearly see the side of your trailer walls and the right/ left tandems. Also you should see the areas to the right and left of your trailer.

I see 👀 all the names in the truck 😅😂❤❤ thank you 🤍🤍🧡🧡🙏🙏
7/27/23 Sacramento CA dmv examiner told me i had to have all right rear trailer tires inside the white line and cone and no touching the white line. Here he/she said one tire and can touch white line. 🤔
good job
Yeah that offset backing is no joke lol
I quit because of backup shit
0:49 it's easy. Just stop when the left 12" white line is in driver side triangular window

Horrible job blurring the training school name and location.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yes, you are correct.
Lmao it’s for a purpose good job guys 😅
🤣🤣kept me laughing 🤣
Yes, we all need to laugh. Best to you on your training.
Right? I wouldn't have made note of it except that they tried to blur it, so now I *have* to look, helpful preview of the test though! Ours is slightly different but it's still helpful seeing the maneuvers
I’m gonna start school soon and feeling pretty nervous. I have O experience with driving big trucks, vehicles etc but really want this to work out.
Try to relax, most of the rest of the students also have never drove a tractor trailer. By the seventh day on the range, you will start to see yourself improving on the skills.

This is of great help. Thank you

This look like parallel backing, with an alley dock twist. Saint Louis Mo doing it now
Yes, you can do it at the top of the lane or just back up to the left cone. Now it’s a blind side parallel park. They just call it a reverse offset.
I’m not a trucker, but I would love to take a coarse like this. I drive a pickup and trailer often for work and feel like I have become pretty proficient, but I wouldn’t pass up some actual training.
It took me while to get it in lol. Ever since I have been driving a trailer at minimum 2 or 3 days a week.
I love this teacher
This so helpful. The best and simple
Glad it was helpful!
Steve the 🐐 with this shit! My instructor was on the fuckin cell phone for 15 mins and I had to go home and find videos to watch! I had to ask him how to setup my offset. Not to mention his English sucked bull ball juice‼️Thank you Steve!!!
CDL Students need to complain to whoever is charge of their school. You are the customer and expect to be trained professionally. Document everything and let them know you may be requesting a refund or a partial refund.
Trucker Steve is the goat
I have been struggling at school getting the truck straight after I come out the box and get up to the green cones. My trailer always ends up crooked to the left then I’m not lined up properly to do the reverse offset. At the MVA test, do they let you straighten out your trailer before you back up to do the reverse offset if you are crooked?
If you are not straight, you will have to back up Then pull up straight and you will get a point. That skill, there is no free back-ups. When your right tire goes between the cone and the line, go a little to the right then start straightening out. Where are you testing at?
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor Glen Burnie MVA on Ritchie Hwy.
I have issues with getting out the box and being straight as well
@@sheilacooper8190 right mirror is properly positioned.
@@markmiller8853 very good Mark! Thank you
I'm three weeks away from finish training school and ....We have one instructor named Brian and I just can say ....three more weeks ,three more weeks !
Best to you on your journey to becoming a CDL driver
Good job sir
Does the tractor really need to be on the center cone? On the test? 5:10
@@whatupdawg281 NO. As long as the trailer is fairly straight, it should not be an issue. If the tractor trailer is facing to the left and not straight, that may be a problem. The examiner will make this call. The rule is that you need to be parallel to the outer boundary line. Slightly off to the left or right should not be a problem.
Good video

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.,
This is exactly how California DMV changed their test to July 11th 2023
Good trilinge work shop.
The out side boundary makes this harder though. Where’s your cones for the out side boundary?
@@whatupdawg281 cones are not required on the outside boundary as long as the lines are clearly marked. Some testing sites have cones and the lines. As an examiner, I have used cones when I am testing.
1:00 I like the blur out of the school names and then the blur out is missing lol
Love the video bro 👍🇯🇲😎
This video is great! Thank you!
6:37 are you supposeto passthe first set of cones before or after you begin to give a hard left??
What did you mean by center of the trailer?
Just got an email today about these maneuvers being implemented in our state next year. It’s gonna be a headache to teach lol

I’m already at CDL school but I do want you to train me about barking and offset barking. What state you live in?

Thank you 🙏
You're welcome.
And his box is a big one other schools have a 28
Certain instructors at the school that I'm currently at just leave it up to us to do it on our own then certain ones tell us step by step what to do which pretty much teaches us nothing.
I'm having so much trouble with straightline backing and parallel. Sometimes I get the backing then I completely screw it up the next time. The parallel I completely screw up though. All the instructor does is blow his whistle the whole time messing me up even worse
@@rondyhenderson2696 not sure if you paid for training or if you received a grant. The CDL school may suggest this may not be for you ( with good reason). When I was teaching- We had a road instructor and myself teaching the range and road. Both of us in our 70 years plus. Many times other instructors would say this student cannot do anything right. The two old farts never failed to teach these students how to be successful and get them a license. Yes it was hard for the instructor and the students who needed extra help but that is what we are being paid for.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor I have a good instructor today so I'm starting to get it little by little
@@rondyhenderson2696 how many days or weeks have you been on the range? How many days or weeks left?
Forward stops are 2024’s test that replaces alley docking. Nothing difficult about it.
Reverse offset. Backing back into the alley. ( looks like a blind side parallel park). The driver will put the rear bumper into the three feet box. That will be test number four.
You will be fine
9:43 "come on in do it!" Omg mean!
Whats the proper way to setup my big mirror and my convex mirror?.
The convex mirror should not have to be adjusted. The big mirrors on the right and left side, you should be able to clearly see the side of your trailer walls and the right/ left tandems. Also you should see the areas to the right and left of your trailer.
No free get outs lol. In Missouri we get 1 free get out & 1 pull up on straight line back, and 2 free get outs and 2 pullups on the offset, parallel, and the 90
That is correct ✅
awesome
so i guess new york is the easiest place to get cd. no controlled stop. one random section for pre trip and coupling. in cb inspection. just the pressure test for brakes. then just backing off set to the right and parallel park to the right. then done. off to the road
The easy way may becoming to every state. MAY?
At around the 9 minute mark. He said 1 and a 1/2 to the right. I just want to make sure. That’s the amount of spins on the steering wheel?
If close to the cone- yes really it’s about the trailer. Students need to react to the trailer not so much about turning the steering wheel.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor I had been struggling my first week with this maneuver. Saw this video over the weekend and got it 3 times already today! Thank you so much ! God bless you
My instructor told that driving a truck is “not rocket science, it’s all technique and tricks”

The school that I attend just introduced this to us about three weeks ago. I’m so pissed because I’m testing soon. This video is a year old.
Maryland was one of three states to start this new testing. We been doing it for close to 3 years.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Seconds time in the range , I don't think so. He got mad expirence
Was the last left to get in the box a hard left? Also if the right turn before the last left turn a hard right will it still be ok?
As you are backing in, you will have a left on: BUT entering the alley your trailer is going to the right! React with a right (trailer move to the left) quickly back with the left. Use your pull up when needed.
@@truckerstevecdlinstructor awesome thank you. I noticed he stopped, turned the wheel to the left, and then started going in to finish. I guess that works too?
If you in the left lane to get to the right lane you fully turn your wheel all the way to the left to start the process on getting the trailer in the right lane.
@@petter215jones yes- you are going to right. Start off with a full left. Back up about at a 45 degree angle. Day cab- look out the back tractor window. If the trailer is facing the alley, that enough. K
Just show the frontwheels if the truck reverse
Best.~

I am a professional Moroccan professional driver, and I have been working here in Morocco for several years, but unfortunately the price in my country is very deficient, as we do not exceed 700 euros per month, even though we work day and night and we do not have time to rest except for a few hours after we are completely exhausted, for example we sleep from 24 hours Only three or four hours and we work for the other 20 hours. I know that you will be surprised by this and you may say that it is impossible, but it is the truth, gentlemen.
