- A low-growing herbaceous plant in the family Oxalidaceae.
This species comes from southeastern Asia.
It has a narrow, creeping stem that readily roots at the nodes. The trifoliate leaves are subdivided into three rounded leaflets and resemble a clover in shape. Some varieties have green or purple leaves.
It grows best in spring or fall in warmer climates but plants will be present year-round.
These plants are annual or perennial, spreading by rhizomes and stolon, as well as by seeds. Seeds are forcefully expelled up to 16 feet away out of cylindrical seed pods.
It prefers, dry to moist well-drained sandy-loam, alkaline soils. It can grow in nutritionally poor soil.
The leaves of wood sorrel are quite edible, with a tangy taste of lemons.
The entire plant is rich in vitamin C. Any wood sorrel is safe when consumed in low quantities.
It is used in traditional medicines around the world. Sitelinks are provided in description.
It is claimed to possess antifungal, antimicrobial, wound healing, cold, refrigerant, antiscorbutic, appetizing and astringent properties.
