- A first test flight of the Antonov AN-225 Mriya in Microsoft Flight Simulator - performing a straightforward circuit at Stansted Airport, England. We take off, fly a 1000m altitude circuit, and bring it in again for an ILS approach - hand flying all the way, and discovering how it behaves.
A HUGE learning curve ahead.

The AN-225 landed several times in Calgary 15 or 20 years ago to pick up oil field equipment. It was impressive! I worked near the airport at the time, so I went down to take a look on my lunch break.
It's huge, isn't it.
Monster! This thing flew over our house a few years back (we live in rural Hungary, not far from the border with Ukraine. I was outside and heard this most peculiar sound approaching from the west, and it appeared from the clouds, quite low and slow, and flew right overhead - I just stood an watched it, completely mesmerised, and it disappeared back into the clouds... it's a crime that it was destroyed, but I hear there are plans to build a new one.
Excellent video as ever!
Thank you :)
All the money paid for this plane is going to be used to rebuild the damaged antanov as I understand it. So I'm going to buy it even if I rarely fly it.
@@meganjperry9489 oh, definitely fly it, it's fun, and I bought it immediately because of where the $ is going! Just don't attempt taking off from Lukla with it... it's impossible.
Don't hold your breath. It was estimated to cost $300 million to finish the second Mria. The original was build by USSR. Ukraine will never be able to afford it.
@@alexsarakapudau1146 another ray of sunshine :)
Support the project not for the game, but all poroceeds goes towards the new AN-225. This means Mriya will fly again, and the world will see her beauty.
What he said :)
BTW would love to see Dmytro Antonov do a livestream with someone while 'right-seating' the 225 to go over in-depth, experiences, differences, etc. That beast only had a handful of pilots and he's active on YT.
I was just thinking this, while watching the video, it would be amazing having him flying in the Sim and talking about his experience in the real one.
I recall back in 2017/18 whilst living in Adelaide, there was a reason for an Antonov to deliver something to Australia.
Anyway , the delivery went well.
I was living roughly 1 km from Adelaide airport.
2 days later after a busy day at work, I was at home when all of a sudden a huge whistle started up, and I immediately realised what the noise came from, but the further the engines spooled up, it started to suck my window blinds away from the glass! Holy fk, She’s got big engines
Yep :)
You convinced me, I bought it and my goodness it looks challenging. I tried parking it at my home (international) airport which caters for everything from GA to the A380. It's impossible to find a gate or ramp parking where this aircraft can sit without making it impossible for other aircraft to pass. How I wish I could have seen it in the air as so many other commentators have described. Time to see if I can follow your example and get this remarkable leviathan into the air. Thanks, Jonathan for your usual high quality presentation.
There are some great videos of it in real life on youtube - it visited Canada a few years back, and there's some fantastic footage of it.
Loved listening to the ATC recordings of when an AN-225 was at the airport. ATC would vector planes on a downwind just to gawk at it. Airlines crews would be requesting to hold short to see it taxi past. Everything changes when it was in town.
I was a student at a GA field a couple miles north when this thing came to my country. Safe to say there were a lot of cessnas and Tecnams going that way to gawk at it. I'm still very salty that I missed the oportunity to see it in person because I didn't hear my alarm in the morning.
You've done well Jon, a natural talent in unknown aircrafts :) Cockpit colour scheme reminds me of MD82
It's great fun :)
Thank you for your video! One of the best addons ever!
Slava Ukraini
It's great :)
There is a channel on UA-cam of former pilot of AN-225 Mriya aircraft, it's called Dmytro Antonov. There are a bunch of videos inside of the cockpit of this plane and some lectures with english subtitles, maybe it could help you with understanding of that cyrilics. Thanks very much for your video!
Man that's a beautiful cabin. Complex as anything but looks like an awful lot of fun to play around with.
Exactly :)
I watched this aircraft land in Perth Australia approx. 7 years ago. It was carrying a power generator for a mining company.
Totally amazing aircraft.
Some info I found for it - The aircraft, which has a crew of six and 42 tyres, is 84 metres long, has a wingspan of 88.4 metres and a height of 18.1 metres. Empty it weighs 285 tonnes and has a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes
Absolute top job in take-off, flying and landing the plane.
Fantastic!
Purchased first thing this morning. Jumped in for quick look and my head almost exploded upon getting things set up! Noticed you have already released a video and a weight was lifted. Many thanks for continuous work to help us virtual pilots.
Welcome aboard!
how can I buy it I cant see it?
@@kbc4612 enter the Marketplace in the flight sim.
@@Stellaris556 I also can't see it in marketplace. Was it a limited offer?
You may want to know that her twin sister is being completed.
And the 225 has also been worked on by Anybuilds WITH Antonov Airlines together.
I said as much in the video :)
It landed in Ontario California a long time ago. I have pictures. This thing is insanely huge. Seeing it take of was 🤯
Awesome :)
@@jonbeckett love your vids man. I’m on Xbox for now but hope to get the antonov on Xbox soon
Ah, Jonathan... I love your videos. Always informative. Always honest. Always entertaining. Great Stuff... Thank you!! 🙂
Glad you like them!
More specifically, the proceeeds are going to the cost of rebuilding the Antonov , not the actual war itself.
Yes. Apologies if I didn't make that clear.
Wonderful! I'm gonna buy this DLC even though I prefer small planes.
It's great :)
Massive and impressive ! Start watching now :)
Cannot wait for the Xbox release in late March 😍😍
It’s releasing omg yess I can’t wait 🥲😊
Three rules on how to make a brick, or 20 pound bag of concrete fly: 1. Airfoil that generates lift. 2. Engines that generate thrust. 3. A trusty Flight Engineer. Nice work at the FE panel there Jonathan. 🍺
Thanks for the tips! Lol
Had a chance to walk inside of it once in UKKM. She was outstanding.
Fantastic :)
This cockpit looks very intimidating 🧐
It's not actually that bad - it's just the cyrillic wording that makes it look worse than it really is.
Long ago I got to go aboard this at an airshow and they also allowed us to look at the cocpit.
Fantastic
My first buy in this excelent game.
Mriya maybe gone, but she lives on in Flight Simulator. R.I.P 1988 - 2022
Was lucky enough to see this beast land at ECCG one time when I was plane spotting.
I think I will get this, the A310 is my favourite plane to fly in the sim atm and that is from inibuilds.
That was a great first landing by the way!
Have fun!
I’m taking this bird on a westpac cruise I took off from KLAX and landed in PHNL yesterday night. Next stop in Pago Pago and onward to Sydney,Australia. Eventually I’m going to circle the globe with it.
It's good fun :)
Nice !! I'll have to give mine a spin tonight...
Good luck :)
I bought this right away, great cause, plus it’s fantastic
Great to hear!
Absolutely magnificent
It's awesome, isn't it :)
bravo et merci Jonathan comme d habitude rien à redire. Alain
You're welcome :)
Cada vez que veo este maravilloso avion ,se me hace un nudo enla garganta al saber que esta destruido,lo seguire admirando por siempre.
Thanks mate!
You're welcome!
It’s a shame it doesn’t have simulated crew members similar to the Dc6
That would make it too easy :) The DC6 crew are really good at messing up though, aren't they :)
You got it on the first attempt! Great!
Yeah thanks
Hi thank you for giving us an in-depth look ! at this magnificent aircraft my dad absolutely 💯% loved this aircraft just like me 32-wheel landing gear system wow it’s remarkable how The Antonov An-225 Mriya is a six engine & it flys like a dream 🇺🇦.
It's great.
It’s sad that this aircraft got destroyed unfortunately. But this addon looks so well done!
It's very good.
Looks great, excited to fly it!
Hope you enjoy it!
Correction - all words in cockpit in russian.
Crikey JB talk about setting the bar for the rest of us. First landing and you greased it :)
I will admit I had eyes out on stalks during that approach - watching everything at once. It is pretty easy to fly though.
You could try landing it on Frankfurt Airport. Officially it's not allowed there due to the airport being too low in the countryside
Too low ?
@@jonbeckett I heard it in a documentary about this plane. But it was a long time ago so I don't remember everything. But you can still try landing on it to know if it actually works
Actually was a Soviet company and Antonov in the 50s the Bureau was relocated to Kyiv
Yep. Not getting involved in politics - and if anybody mentions anything about politics, I will start banning them. We're here for aviation.
What a Beast 👍🙏🏻✈️👨✈️RIP 😢
It really is. Easy to fly though.
was pretty excited by it until finding out IniBuilds did it that gives me really big reservations after the A310 that was "included". Does the fuel and weight work by the MSFS setup screen or did they screw that up again?
Not looked that deeply yet.
And MTOW is 600 tonnes, max payload is 250 tonnes.
Yeah lol - I realised I said the wrong thing after :)
Actually there’s supposedly an unfinished an225 fuselage in a hanger somewhere in ukraine or Russia
There is. It was 70% complete before the Russian invasion. Let's see what happens.
Looks great
It does!
I think the other airframe was a long way off 70%. Maybe at the visual level, but not including all systems. Numerous coutries went over to evaluate the costs and all came to the same conclusion, that you would sadly never make the investment back, and the chances of getting it passed all modern requirements would be near impossible. I wish them luck with the new build, but I'll be amazed if it ever comes to fruition!
We shall see!
Crikey, that’s dedication, a little bit different from the Piaggio.
It's very, very different :)
While I was watching, I was kind of scared you missed to press one of the many important buttons potentially...😆
Hah - so was I :)
Didn't I read in a description somewhere that this modeling of the aircraft even includes a language switch somewhere (hidden click spot, or setting on some tablet somewhere)...? If so, it would help with with that Cyrillic writing if you cannot read that, wouldn't it. Was I wrong, or did you just not find it yet for this video?
It's only in the MCP :)
@@jonbeckett Ah. Figures. Would be *huge* work (on top what is already done here) to do that with second set of graphics for all cockpit surfaces with lettering. My (interpretation) bad, then. 🤷🏼♂️
(Luckily, I've worked a couple of weeks in Bulgaria two decades ago and went on a trip in 2016 to watch the launch of Союз of МС-03 from Байконур, so with some effort I can usually still phonetically voice Cyrillic, which might help some, when I finally get my hands on this beast on Xbox later this year. 😉)
Will you be making a tutorial video on the cold & dark start of the An-225 including the engine start up? Much appreciated
Yes - but not until a few weeks time - I will be away all next week.
how did you assign SIX THROTTLES for your controllers ? when the limit is 4 in the sim ????
I didn't - I mapped the 4 engines that the sim exposes to the two axiis on my controller. The aircraft obviously connects two engines to one axis for the 5th and 6th engines.
@@jonbeckett oh theres no instruction manual . Thank you
I do find it interesting that you can select English in the cockpit, but it stays with Cryllic. I turned on the assistance for menu tool tips and instrument tool tips, and still can't figure the bird out. Wonderful job, but looking forward to a startup tutorial.
I will be doing one - but not for a week or so.
@@jonbeckett sounds great, looking forward to it.
So far all I use for engine start is Ctrl E eh :)
I've done a follow-up video showing the full start-up.
This may have been said, but AN225 did have a gns GPS in it
Probably not the same as the 430 though :)
@@jonbeckett supposedly it was the GNS550
@jonbeckett the pictures I have found online show a simple GPS system. With that being said, the MSFS version of the 225 uses the GPS from MSFS so it's not quite realistic.
@@jasonspiskey4148 yes - my mistake - it's the 530 that's in the MSFS version, isn't it
Enjoyed the video, thanks for posting. Just a tip from a pilot. You would benefit a lot in learning landings, specificallly controlling descent with your throttle and not your pitch to maintain a correct Angle of Attack on approach. I'm not trying to be a ahole, hope you are not offended.
Remember this was a first ever flight in it! :) Not offended at all.
@@jonbeckett I enjoyed the video, especially so quick after release. Allows us to have an exciting look at a new aircraft. That being said, these principles apply across all aircraft and will improve your ability to fly aircraft you have never flown because the principles do not change. its exciting to see so many people interested in flight simming after all these years of it being somewhat of a niche area, but many jump in without ever really learning the principles of flight or ground school and focus more on the aircraft systems and how to operate them. I've met many a sim pilot with hundreds of hours who doesn't undertand the basics. You should always have a positive AOA (nose up) in almost every aircraft on approach and should never fly the aircraft down to the runway. This is counter intuitive for most and I'm mostly posting this for others who may stumble on the thread now so they can inquire further. If you pitch up and you are climbing during approach you are going too fast. Your ideal AOA will vary between aircraft but in general you should have a positive pitch and descend at 300 feet per minute on approach. If you start to climb, throttle back and vice versa if your sink rate increases.
With respect, I don't agree at all. I have flown real aircraft. Saying throttle controls descent rate is a gross simplification. It's a combination of attitude, angle of attack, thrust, and configuration. You of course knew that though...
@@jonbeckett I didn't once say "thrust controls descent rate" soooo....
@@trevoC132 you said exactly that in your first reply !?
Is there any way to get to the cargo deck? I couldn't find any doors/stairs from within the flight deck.
Drone cam.
Worth mentioning that whilst proceeds do indeed go to Ukraine, they go directly to the AN-225 rebuild fund
Yep - apologies if I didn't make that clear.
Look fun
It is!
Is that the actual Engine sound of Mriya?
I think so. Or at least approximated. The real thing whistles.
Thank god it dont pollute the air anymore
Doesn't.
I could be totally mistaken but I thought inibuilds had the option to turn the Russian into English?
Only in certain places.
I'm surprised at how many people DON'T KNOW you can change the text to English in the EFB. 😆
It only changes the language in the MCP
Kind of curious how you set up the throttles. Do you have 2 physical levers with 3 of the simulated levers, per physical lever?
Probably just same way those with just a single throttle axis control any multi-engine plane.
I used the same mapping as the 747. The sim allows for 4 engines - I have the 4 mapped to 2 axis (my throttle levers). Obviously for this aircraft, the 5th and 6th engine share an axis with the 3rd and 4th engine.
Awesome. It's too bad that 6 people can't share a cockpit lol
Hah - group flight with one plane :)
You had said it was released on the marketplace. I did not see it in the last 15 minutes. Was it released to the PC group 1st?
Yes - I don't think it's coming to XBox for a while.
@@jonbeckett It will be released to XBox with SU12 in March.
I hope it isn't gonna be super expensive.
It would be really nice if someone could give this an English textured cockpit
But that wouldn't be realistic. That's like saying "It would be nice when I visit France if everybody spoke English, and everything was written in English"...
I remember in a dev preview devs said english textures to be included with it.
I heard that you can switch the wording to English somewhere in the settings, Jonathan.
It doesn't affect many places.
@@jonbeckett It doesn't but you can def just put on tool tips.
Can you turn on the fan blades above the cockpit ?
Very probably - I haven't even looked that up yet :)
yes you can, you can even rotate the fans
Only downside is that it doesn't sound like the 225. Those don't sound like D-16 turbofans.
I guess the problem with that is there isn't one to record :)
*d-18 turbofans; they were recorded from the an225 itself
I understand the need for realism but surely there can't be an English version? One where you don't have to have google translate open on another monitor?
There is no english version in the real world, so no :)
@@jonbeckett obviously not
Is it here for Xbox !
Hoorah!
Is it easy to fly or is it hard?
Relatively easy. If you can fly the 737 or MD-82 you'll be fine.
@@jonbeckett The hardest plane i ever flew is Airbus A-310 and (Darkstar when you land it.) lol
Hello from Ukraine! I am very satisfied and happy that whole world except few North Korean countries, anyway it’s so wonderful that Microsoft supports Ukraine and all money paid for aircraft gonna be invested in new AN 225 2.0! Slava Ukraini
Slava Ukrainii ! Glad to hear proceed$ going to Ukraine relief efforts eh!
Indeed.
I have a question, is the message from the nose of the plane predetermined or not? I'm not criticizing the message itself, but as a purist of the original livery it annoys me and the photos that I see some have, others don't. I would appreciate solving the doubt
It comes with lots of orginal livery variants.
@@jonbeckett thx
I Didnt Know It Was Destroyed. Wtf Is Russia Doing
I'd rather they send all proceeds from this plane into rebuilding the Antonov. There is already so much corruption in ukraine aid with barely any check and balance. Better spend it on something we can track.
The funds are going towards the Antonov.
I hate flight Simulator 2020 paid for it downloaded it played it for a little bit even bought planes , one day it just disappeared 😒 and when I went on to the website it said I had to buy it again, huh 😮 wtf 😑 😳 😐
Don't really like how they have to bring politics into the plane, I get it's Ukrainian and it's a big piece in aviation but that "Be brave like Ukraine" is not on the real life livery and just brings unneeded politics into it. Hopefully someone makes a livery to change it
There are many real liveries with it. This is just the default one. There are many historic liveries going back 30 years that come with it.
@@jonbeckett Yes I just saw a video with out it, thanks for notifying
Avgn
Why do pilots have to learn hard on how to start the Antonov when there ist Ctrl-E? Lol... 🤣
What's the fun of just CTRL+E if we can always do the hard and fun way???
The fun is in learning how things work. Understanding. Observing how systems were designed, interconnect, and integrate with each other.
