Namibia: Africa’s New Far West | Genocide, Illegal Settlements & Chinese Mafia (Documentary)

  • Namibia has the third highest levels of income inequality in the world. 6% of the population own 70% of the land and here, the wounds of German Colonisation run deep. Between 1904 -1908, the Germans established concentration camps where the indigenous Herero and Nama people were interned. Up to 80% of them died in what Germany later recognised as the first genocide of the 20th Century. While the descendants of these victims, like Karvita, live in illegal settlements in constant fear of eviction, the descendants of these colonists continue to own most of the land and have no problem justifying their inheritance.
Most of Namibia’s vast natural resources are owned or controlled by foreigners. The diamond industry is dominated by DeBeers and the ruling Swapo party, widely seen as corrupt, is propped up by its historic ally: China. The construction and uranium industries are controlled by the Chinese and documents leaked in 2021 revealed that North Korea was illegally subcontracted to build the country’s State House.
Most of the country is sparsely populated, enabling nature to flourish. It’s home to one to one of the greatest wildlife populations in the world, including the only free-roaming black rhinos. But these animals are constantly threatened by the Chinese mafia while global warming is increasing desertification, threatening indigenous communities.

I am a young Media Practitioner from and based in Botswana. We are direct neighbors with Namibia in Southern Africa. I must say this is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen telling an African story the way it is. In fact in my hometown of Mahalapye in Botswana, we actually grew up with the Herero people. They have a ward of their own called Herero not far from where I grew up. Our ancestors gave the land to their ancestors after they flee from Namibia fearing genocide attacks from the Germans. I literally grew up and schooled with these people. They are really passionate about their culture and work tirelessly towards preserving it. Big up to the producers of this documentary....

@@daggaboom Botswana's population is fairly small so Id assume not a lot of power would need to be generated, thats just an assumption btw. We do have the occasional power and water cuts but the government does a good job in informing citizens well beforehand even though in some places its a major issue, going months sometimes years with no water. I think the main reason South Africans dont relocate necessarily to Botswana is the lack of resources. People in SA are accustomed to a certain type of lifestyle and they probably think they cant get it in Botswana because SA is well developed and years ahead in terms of opportunity creation whereas in BW, its more of a continuing process. BW is like a big, retro town, slowly moving towards modernity and SA is like a major city thats been thriving but encountered some hurdles along the way but truthfully I couldn't tell you why they dont move here because most people from their side and our side are one and the same, related by blood and everything.

The exploitation of Africa is still ongoing to this day, that means the revolution for Africa's freedom must continue. It is surprising to see Namibia still have a colonial issue even after their revolution, what did the people achieve. All the leaders of Africa are the problem of Africa. Since the so-called independence not one African leader disbands one inch of their borders with their Neighbour's, and none have since got rid of the colonial laws they inherited, they used those same colonial laws and borders to rule and govern their people, that there should show you how serious they are about Pan-Africanism, Africa for Africans and only more Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger can truly bring Africa its freedom especially when they can tell Europe and the west no more, no more go away

First of all I would like to thank the producers of this video,it assists to raise questions as to why a resourceful country with few occupants is still struggling.
The way I see it as a Namibian,we are failing ourselves,we want to be given all the time, but we don’t want to work for it nor work together as Namibians.
    1. We still have tribal issues
    2. “Everyone for himself” attitude
    3. Greed amongst Namibians
    4. Government support system needs amendments
And so much more needs to change.
Did you know that majority of people in Katutura are coming from families that own farms?but they choose to abandon these farms and come to the city in search for jobs that end up exploiting them? (Just an observation).
Us as Namibians we need to wake up and work together as one,if there is hunger..we must fight it together!
For instance why are we not transforming our lands to build green schemes for the local people?what’s stopping us is ourselves.

This documentary, which is good, does also inherently blame the colonials for present day problems. How were the German colonials involved in Fish Rot, or other corruption and cases of state looting?
Sure there are present day issues which can be connected to colonial wrongs. But current management of the system, which is causing the income disparities, are not colonial vestiges. These are current problems perpetuated by current rulers. It's too easy to beat the dead colonial horse and use its skin to cover up our own present day ineptitudes.
So in short, I agree with you. The problems we have now require introspection, about who and what it means to be modern Namibians and how we can solve our problems ourselves. No longer blaming others and using it as the easy path to justification of our situation.

The problem with Namibia, is similar to that of Zimbabwe and South Africa. There is a de facto one party State in each of these countries. The political parties which "delievered Independence have been in power from day one and feel that they are entitled to govern regardless of the results on the ground. The people come elections forget that nothing has changed for them and are coerced into voting for them.
Once you start to vote for a different political party, and actually elect that political party then change will start to appear. The electorate has the power to demand change which benefits it and if it doesn't come it must change the govt. With the wealth Namibia has and the small population, Namibians should be living better than the Arabs in Dubai!!! Wake up brothers before it's too late. You owe nothing to no country other than to yourselves!!

Debmarine Namibia, the joint venture marine diamond prospecting and recovery company, owned in equal shares by the Namibian government and the De Beers Group, increased its contributions to government by 147% in 2022.27 Mar 2023. So the problem obviously is not the germans living in namibia, but the government. Should the government not spread this wealth onto their citizens? Please could you reveal the source of your information, as this is enhancing conflict in a country that was at peace with one another for years. Developed countries cannot afford African countries to be developed because those countries thrive on corrupt leadership, Africa's poverty etc. You cannot say a country is rich and only look at the wealth owned by capitalists who are, in fact imperialists. Apartheid all that was not about race, only about economy and they've won.
Imagine how ancestors are important to an African and you tell him, pay in order to come visit their grave? No remorse none whatsoever telling us... You've land doesn't mean rich, you have to work the land, and yet he is paying a local... to work the land. It's the samething as... Coming into my house and telling me it's yours now, you come every now and again to check on the property, pay me peanuts, for taking care of the very same house I use to own. 💔

Actually its not only an african story. It is the story of many parts of the world. USA, Canada, Australia, all of latin america... imagine if the collonizations in Africa started 100 years earlier, black people would be the minorities by now (many tribes would have been wipped out). We are lucky in that sense. Now unless the germans in namibia become wise and settle this extremely disgusting inequality & greed, they are at a risk of a genocide in the near feature. unfortunately they don't seem remorsful at all.

The terms that were put in place made us(Natives) respect property rights and that means we the natives of the land couldn’t take back land and minerals that’s why German and Afrikaners own so much land . Many western countries have made it easy for their people to come here and own land and mines .Less we forget De beers(which was or is still owned by German Jews) which owns all the diamond wealth in my country .The Americans have stopped us from building a nuclear power station while we have some much uranium underground.
