Sheila Guyse's daughter, Sheila Crystal Devin (the one quoted in this video) is my cousin through Guyse's first husband. She is pretty amazing in her own right. Under her professional name, Sheila Anderson, she was one of the most well-known Black models in the 70s and 80s and was signed with the Ford Modeling Agency. I am a 65 year old African American male who lives in Macon Bibb County Georgia. Thankyou so much for educating the public with these race movies. You are doing our race as African Americans a wonderful service by showing them the level of cultural We have risen to dispite the restriction of Segregation imposed upon us and other legal obstruction the White race imposed upon us to prevent our rise to full manhood and womanhood before court ordered intergration of the 1960s.
The wonderful thing about race films were there portrayal of black Americans as detectives, doctors, bankers, lawyers, shopkeepers etc. The same type of characters seen in Boniface films.
I remember seeing a couple of these films in the late 90s, and early 2000s. Around this time I learned about Oscar Micheaux, one of the first Black filmmakers. This video made me remember that. It was wonderful seeing a wonderful all black cast when I saw these films. As always, a wonderful, thoughtful video. Ms. Sheila Guyse was a beautiful and talented performer. What a voice! I used to want to be in the entertainment industry as well, but I never could get a solid foot in the door. Now I’m grateful because I now know that it’s a wicked industry.
I've never been on your channel before today and I'm so glad you popped up on my feed. It's so good to watch videos by black women uplifting other black women. Especially such a unsung beauty like Mrs.Guyse
Thank you, for sharing background information about Sheila Guyse! Guyse was an amazing actress , as well as, a wonderful tender hearted human being. But, please be respectful (and sensitive) when describing a person's key life choices and especially when concerning their family members. And also understand that the dominant cultural perspective of an era often lends a hand in persuading and/or diswading one's behavior. And too, I'd like to enlighten you just a bit more about Guyse... Sheila Guyse was a very lonely lady and wasn't very happy with the industry and how her career was developing when she met her husband. For example, there were times when work and lucrative pay was very scarce and so she often felt abandoned, forgotten and stagnated. Moreover, the entertainment industry was in many aspects quite exploitative as it still is nowadays. Consequently, Guyse struggled financially at times, and so, the financial roller coaster was often emotionally overwhelming. There were times when Guyse barely had enough money to purchase something to eat and/or to purchase new stockings and other essential female items. However, she had the skills to know how to look fantastic with less. But, she eventually met a man that absolutely adored her (and wouldn't exploit her) and eventually they fell in love and married. Her husband alleviated her financial burdens and was too very attentive, caring and protective. Overtime she decided to take a rest break from acting and overtime she became content with being housewife. Guyse worked outside the home as well but at her leisure... And too, understand, that in those days as many African Americans were leaving farming and servant occupations they began to enter the world of entrepreneurship, the blue-collar and white-collar workforce... The workforce was becoming much more diverse and so garnering consistent work (and a consistent paycheck) was every man's ultimate goal. So, a sanitation worker/garbage pick-up person was (and still is) a respectable blue-collar job (manual labor) position. Moreover, the pay by comparison to most other blue-collar (and even white collar) careers is far above standard and still is today. The sanitation worker nowadays earns about $22.00-$42.00 per hour and that's without overtime and there's usually always overtime... Simply, her husband earned a middle-class income. His pay was consistent (unlike many entertainers and no matter their level) and even though her husband was far from being rich and famous he did provide her a middle-class lifestyle and treated her well. Therefore, I feel that she wouldn't want her husband to be demeaned in anyway when describing her rise and fall from being a Hollywood starlet.
Thanks for documenting her. I too fell in love with classic films as a teenager and began watching "race filmsproduced by Oscar Micheaux and others. These films were produced on a low budget and were created to offer black actors an opportunity to star in films as the lead. During the Jim Crow era, Hollywood would not allow black actors to star as dignified characters opposite their White counterparts. Most were reduced to portraying domestics or pullman porters. Also. colorism played a big role even among Black films which enabled light skinned black actors to star as the leads as well. I would also like to see a review on Doan Drake, who concealed her ethnic identity in order to maintain roles in Hollywood during the 30's and 40's. Ms Drake later on admitted that she was Black. Concealing one's true ethnic identity became a common factor among entertainers during the 30's, 40's and 50's who were trying to obtain roles among White actors in major films. Anglo-Indian actress, Merle Oberon engaged in this same act of deception as well. For fear of losing roles portraying White women opposite leading White actors of her day.
This is the first time I have heard about this talented beauty! So much injustice done to these Trailblazers. Thank you for sharing and bringing them to light 😀 🌟
(at 1:44/14:17) That's a still from "Lost in the Stars", 1949 production. Left to right: William Greaves, Gloria Smith (my mom), Sheila, and unfortunately I don't know the names of those male actors. Thanks so much for posting. These actors, like others, paved the way for Black actors who came after them.
Yep, i see it now. I was thinking her and Natalie Wood reminded me of each other too, but I definitely see TPH. I could see TPH doing a biopic on Sheila Guyse.
Thank you so much for doing a video on her. She is truly overlooked. She was beautiful and had a great voice. For a movie to break down, can I suggest "The Doughgirls". It's a 1944 comedy from Warner Brothers and it stars Ann Sheridan, Alexis Smith, Jane Wyman and Eve Arden. Another film I suggest is "Ziegfeld Girl" a musical drama from MGM released in 1941 starring Judy Garland, Lana Turner, and Hedy Lamarr.
I love your channel so much! The sound is perfect; The music has just the right tempo, not too quiet and not too loud, compliments the vibe of the video as well as your voice - which by the way, is just as perfect and full of kindness and joy, it's contagious! 😄You can also really tell that you've spent much time doing research, many of these actresses and icons I thought I already knew everything about, yet you always have interesting facts to share that I never knew of! I adore the way you manage to balance things in a way which fills the receiver's mind with neutrality despite the big scandals and controversies that often are covered. I remember watching your video on Brigitte Bardot and loved the way you praised her for her icon status, without giving her the "Saint treatment" if you know what I mean lol, a lot of people tend to overlook controversies like these because of their "pop-cultural significance", so you are very appreciated 🌸 You're amazing, happy new year, from a snow-covered Sweden 🥶 ❤
Hello Karine, the 50's Hollywood movies are my favourite era of movies to watch. Please can you do a breakdown of Imitation of Life, and Carmen Jones? Thanks.
Thank you for creating videos for our people. At times many of the people you research don't get the respect that they deserve. Again, thank you 🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏
She made records back when Joyce Bryant was popular. She made good race movies too My face is OH boy what a girl with Tim Moore. Didn't know much of her bio, thank you
She was absolutely stunning. Thank u for sharing story. I love hearing stories about this era in time but I wasn’t familiar with Sheila. I’d love to see a story on the incomparable Hazel Scott. She was magnificent.
This is my first intro to Sheila. I was wondering if her singing voice was used in the cartoons during the 40's and 50's such as Cinderella and Snow White, which was so soothing and memorable to me as a child.

I wish Hollywood would honor Oscar Micheaux the way he truly deserves!
Love your videos. You should do Joyce Bryant "the bronze Marilyn" she just passed away in November

This is the first time I have heard about this talented beauty! So much injustice done to these Trailblazers. Thank you for sharing and bringing them to light 😀 🌟
Karine thank u for this! I love old Hollywood and never heard of her.
Thank you! Please continue educating. Apparently Black Hollywood is not sharing these stories……..disappointing
The UA-cam channel Reel Black has some old rare stuff too. And they mention material that can be found in this platform.
You should do Tammy Terrell. Her story was so tragic and she was so young when she passed.

The thumbnail of her reminds me of Dorothy Dandridge ❤️
Keep shining a light on these forgotten (should-be) legends
I appreciate the content you give us on our Black history leading ladies ❤
Wow I never heard about her before! She's gorgeous and her voice is so angelic. Great video!
She was GORGEOUS!! Thanks for teaching
I never heard of her until now, she's beautiful. Thank You for this video. ❤
She was absolutely GORGEOUS! And Taraji favors her.
I was just thinking that
Yep, i see it now. I was thinking her and Natalie Wood reminded me of each other too, but I definitely see TPH. I could see TPH doing a biopic on Sheila Guyse.
A tiny bit she has a wide lower face ….. but Tara’s has beady eyes that pop out
Wow, another woman who was an ultimate performer. She seem to have the grace, beauty, and talent of a lot of women from that time. ❤❤❤

I just saw that movie last week on the TCM channel. Love that story. Bette was so shallow in that role.
Doing the lords work she’s a beauty

Wow, talk about talented people we never heard of. I enjoyed getting to know about Sheila Guyse. I'm looking forward to more of your videos.
Hello Karine, the 50's Hollywood movies are my favourite era of movies to watch. Please can you do a breakdown of Imitation of Life, and Carmen Jones? Thanks.
She did a breakdown of "Carmen Jones" last year, I believe.
Excellent mini documentary. Thanks for sharing. I will be checking her out.
This Anthology of Beauty is facinating, She puts you in the mind of Taraj P. Hinton
I was thinking the same thing
Thanks for my introduction to her…I have never heard of her and this piece is full of wonderful information on her.
Thank you for creating videos for our people. At times many of the people you research don't get the respect that they deserve. Again, thank you 🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for sharing this beautiful star with the rest of us. Such an interesting bio.
WOW she was absolutely beautiful🤩
