DIY Justin Clamp for half the cost of a Manfrotto Justin Clamp

- In this video, I am going to show you how to build your own DIY Justin Clamp which is a great piece of lighting grip gear for studio and location photography at less than half the cost of a Manfrotto Justin Clamp.
It's called a Justin Clamp because it is named after its inventor - self described tinkerer and photographer Justin Stailey of New York. Justin who at the time was working for Bogen, created the studio clamp to solve flash mounting complaints from photographer Joe McNally. McNally was running into problems with his photo grip gear when mounting the heavy Nikon speedlights in unusual places with the existing studio clamps and ball heads that were available on the market. Stailey took some off the shelf pieces from Bogen and created this frankenstein of a clamp - that went on to be named the Justin Clamp.
What is brilliant about the design of this photography clamp is that it's incredibly versatile. I would encourage any photographer who does location lighting to have at least two of these in your kit. Be sure to stay tuned until the end and I will show you a few of the many ways that you can use it.
But for the sake of not having to spend more than a hundred bucks to have two of these in your kit just in case you need them - let's do some problem solving and build our own Justin Clamps using Oben mini ballheads and a simple spring clamp.

I would love to see the way YOU use your Justin Clamps. Be sure to join my Facebook Group and share how you use them: tog.chat/fbgroup I hope to see you there!
Let's call it the Edelman Clamp to do the inventor some justice !! ;-)
Great stuff Joe, thanks for sharing.
I made two of the clamps and have used them many times. If you have a garage studio like me, it's a life saver.
Excellent Joe 😊
Nice to see another DIY, been a while. Thanks for the history of the clamp.
Joe, great video and DIY, something I know I can use, is always great to make !
You are back with your diy, love it. Though you forget about it.
Thanks
Another great idea Joe! I’m on it! Thanks x
I love your videos man!
Joe thanks for your lesson.
Love this diy, thank you Joe!
You're very welcome Plimpton! I am glad you enjoyed it!
Nice man. Excellent work👍🏻
Joe, I am a new subscriber and love your channel and attitude! You are a great teacher! This is a great diy project!
Brilliant...
Thank you so much!
Thanks for showing us how to build the Joe Clamp :)
Joe, between being an Olympus shooter and being honest and not afraid to call things out as they are (which includes calling out companies and their prices) - you retain my respect and are still one of my favorite channels!
Thank you The Post Color Blog! I appreciate the kind words and support!
Wow I really appreciate this video, you uploaded it for me @ the right time, Thanks...
That's awesome Supreme Omega Company! Glad to hear it!
I have to make one of these! Even more versatile than my old Eddie Bauer tripod that folded small enough to fit in my pocket! It had a long velcro strap so you could wrap it to a pole, or a tree, or whatever is handy. Great video!
great video
Great job Joe !!! Saved to my favorites !!
Glad you enjoyed it Kevin P! I appreciate the comment!
Great Joe
You never cease to amaze me Joe - this is the clamp that I never knew I needed! This would have saved me so many times I can't even count.
Thank you! Robert Jones Glad you enjoyed it!
Pretty cool Joe!
Thank you! Donna Couture Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the vid! I just ordered one of those Oben mini ball heads for my Godox Ad200.
You're very welcome Ajax Rodriguez! Those Oden ballheads work great with the AD200's!
You did it again Joe what a great DIY clamp, time to hit Home Depot and make a few for my studio and camera bag.. 👍
Awesome Mike Osinski! Thanks for commenting!
I wish I had seen this video before our trip to Montreal. It would have made mounting my speedlight in an alley in Old Montreal a whole lot easier, and safer for the light!
Great video. I used a clamp to hold my reflector to a monopod and then attached a LED light to the mounting bracket to aim at the reflector for a continous light for video at a wedding reception for interviews. wasn't a harsh as the LED aimed at the people.
diy rulez! thank you, joe, for save my money!!! ;)
Wow Joe, great gadget, so when does your DIY photography gadget book come out :-D
please show a video of all the clamps you use please I love clamps thank you for this diy I love it
More to come solomon yap!
Might be an idea to add some thread locking stuff to all the threads to stop them inadvertently coming loose.
if you ever have a good tip how to make an umbrella holder :P I figured my solutions are too clunky :D
Thanks for the info?
You're welcome Philip Cunio I appreciate the comment!
I have access to a machine shop and my degree is in machining... Thanks for making this! It'll be my next "government project" lol ~January
Awesome Chris&January Williamson! Thanks for commenting!
I'd throw some lockwashers, either split or tooth or some Loctite on those screws too.
The link for the Husky Clamp says Discontinued. And the link for the swivel mount says currently unavailable.
I thought it was called a Justin clamp because it was for "Just in" case you needed to put a speedlight in an awkward spot Lol!
I have heard about superclamp but not Justin-clamp 😮
I've got my modified CST/berger surveyor's tripod pano rig posted on instagram (@raphael.swift). It's got a pacific laser 5/8"-11 female to 1/4-20 male adapter plate (Amazon) and a small handful of hardware to create an L bracket with non skid cork surfacing. Once I get through my current government sponsored disaster I'll see about making a video.
Awesome TimberGeek! Thanks for commenting!
Sure enough, just as Joe posts this DIY, amazon's price nearly doubles for the 180°Swivel mount. The joys of capitalism: if they know you want it, they raise the price. If they know you don't care for their product, the price lowers.
Swivel Mount ? I am not sure which item you mean Garacha222. If you are referring to the Oben Ballhead - it is still the same price: amzn.to/2Ly1SNo and the Stand Adapter - there are several different ones available - amzn.to/2IRLNo4 ** Just be sure to get one with a removable cold shoe flash mount.
It was the stand adaptor link that went from $6 to $10 each. I found (as you point out) the version offering 2 for $15, so ordered a couple of those, as well as a single $10 one incase there is diffence in friction when angling them (some may have 'teeth' while others may have smooth surface), Also the picture makes one look like metal, while the other looks like hard plastic. I also picked up a couple of the extra large clamps (as well as regular size) at home depot. The extra large are very stiff, and will clamp hard to whatever the are attached to. Can't have too many options at this price :)
