    Hi this is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens we’re going to talk about clamps- the basic clamps and the ones that I love. Now this is not super glamorous stuff to talk about. But it’s the basics that we use every single day that we’re on set. One of my listeners wrote in and said, “Tell me about clamps.” So we’re gonna talk about clamps. The clamps that every body uses and a couple you might not have heard of before.
    There are tons of clamps and we could do lots of different lessons on them all, but today I’m covering seven. We’ve got an A-clamp, a super clamp, a Cardellini, a platypus (or duck bill) clamp, an adjustable gaffer grip, a c-clamp, and a chain vice grip. I’m going to show you how each one works, fill you in on the advantages and disadvantages of each, and tell you what I’d put in my beginning clamp kit if I were just starting out.
    Hope you learn something new today. Leave questions or thoughts in the comments below. Thanks for watching.
    Keep those cameras rollin’, keep on clickin’.

    Laughing but learning while watching this vid. Very informative. Very detailed. You talk and you SHOW one by one how each is used on real shooting set. This takes a lot of time to plan, to prepare, to shoot, and to edit. Just incredible.

More videos like this please! Would really like one on brackets for light stands! Andddd, hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. Thank you for so many brilliant videos that have helped me become a better photographer and an established professional.

    It's worth noting that c clamps and speed c clamps are usually used to bite into wooden beams it other very wide parallel faces, and they're virtually always used with cribbing (short sections of 1x3 or 2x4) wrapped in duvetyne to protect the surface from the jaws of the clamp.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your pointers Jeff. You sound like you have grip experience.

    • @jefffitzgerald5396
      @jefffitzgerald5396 4 роки тому

      The Slanted Lens Not nearly as much as many others ha. Speed C's are especially cool because you can just change out the length of speedrail to whatever you need if you need to grab something super wide. Modern studio makes an interesting version of the speed c using 5/8" fittings instead of speedrail, so you could use a standard 40 inch grip arm to make a very wide c clamp for rigging lightweight fixtures without having to carry around a bunch of pipe.

    Love this vid! What's the name of the metal clamp that looks like a superclamp?

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  7 років тому

      Different companies have different names for a lot of these clamps. The super clamp is also sometimes listed as a Mafer clamp or Bogen clamp.

    Can you do a photo shoot with a B&W couple something of a engagement shoot. For beginners what they will run into in the sun and bad shadows caz the darker skin vs the lighter skinned person. Maybe do some examples of bounce flash off a 5 in 1 reflector? That would really help me out... Thanx love all your video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

    Totally baffled by your video for two reasons...
    One, I am a Gaffer, and I can't help notice you are using all the photo clamp names. Like in video, we call super clamps Mafers and A Clamps are Pony's. I know these all have tons of names and you couldn't possibly go over all of them (No really, You don't have enough time in the world for all the names.), but if someone walked onto my set asking where the platypus clamp is, I would laugh them all the way off set. Lol Just a few other names would be nice!
    Two, How the hell did you mount that superclamp upside down? Was that putty under there? Haha I can't wait for someone to try that and see it snap the 1/4-20 tip off!
    Annnnnd Cardellini clamps for life! Best clamps out there in my opinion... Love them!
    (p.s. You forgot c-47's! They are better for holding Gels than a metal pony clamp. With hot lights, it'll only take you one time of grabbing a hot clamp to realize that was a bad idea!)
    I've got your t-shirt on my wishlist! Love your channel! Keep up the great videos!
