The driving analogy I found was fascinating, you could even continue the analogy and link it to a practical driving exam for all 5 dimensions, eg Mindset (speed limit, too slow too cautious with uncertainty, too fast, too impatient with the study technique), Retrieval (memorising the roads), Self-management (reacting to hazards/hazard perception). The stronger you are in all these dimensions, the more likely you will pass the exam. (except the mindset, keeping on the speed limit could symbolise just the right amount of uncertainty needed to neither be under/overwhelmed by challenges. Thank you for the video, absolutely brilliant Justin,
P.S. My learning type is "Unchained" according to the quiz!

I think you should focus on self management mindset and self regulation first then deep processing and retrieval. Every dimension work together but if you can’t manage yourself then you will not improve in a single one of those. I think it’s possible to improve all the others at the same time

The Broken Barrel Approach to Learning
    **I. Introduction:**
The Broken Barrel Approach is a personalized learning strategy that focuses on identifying and improving an individual's learning weaknesses. It's based on the analogy of a wooden barrel where each stave represents a different dimension of learning. Just like a barrel with a broken stave can only hold water up to the level of the broken stave, a learner is limited by their weakest learning dimension.
    **II. Ineffective Learning Strategies:**
Before diving into the Broken Barrel Approach, it's crucial to understand why common learning strategies often fail.
    **A. The Silver Bullet Approach:**
This approach involves seeking a single, magical solution to all learning problems. It's ineffective because:
    * **No Universal Solution:** There is no single technique that works for everyone in every situation. Different learning tasks require different approaches.
    * **Focus on the Tool, Not the User:** This approach ignores individual strengths and weaknesses, focusing on the technique instead of the learner.
    **B. The Strengths-First Approach:**
This approach prioritizes developing existing learning strengths. While seemingly logical, it's flawed because:
    * **Weakness as a Limiting Factor:** In learning, your weakest skill often dictates your overall performance. A strong engine is useless if the car has flat tires.
    * **Neglecting Crucial Areas:** Focusing solely on strengths can lead to neglecting critical weaknesses that hinder overall progress.
**III. The Broken Barrel Approach: A Paradigm Shift**
Instead of seeking a magic bullet or focusing solely on strengths, the Broken Barrel Approach emphasizes:
    * **Identifying Weaknesses:** Understanding which dimension of learning is holding you back.
    * **Prioritizing Improvement:** Focusing on strengthening the weakest areas first.
    * **Iterative Process:** Continuously re-evaluating weaknesses and adapting the learning strategy.
**IV. The Five Dimensions of Learning:**
The Broken Barrel Approach identifies five key dimensions that contribute to learning effectiveness:
    **A. Deep Processing:**
    * **Definition:** The ability to understand information deeply, connect ideas, and solve complex problems.
    * **Strengths:** Easy understanding, strong memory, efficient learning.
    * **Weaknesses:** Difficulty grasping concepts, slow understanding, struggling to apply knowledge.
    **B. Self-Regulation:**
    * **Definition:** Awareness of learning processes, ability to adapt methods, and conscious control over thinking.
    * **Strengths:** Clear understanding of personal learning style, adaptable techniques, efficient learning across various situations.
    * **Weaknesses:** Lack of awareness of learning methods, difficulty adapting to different tasks, inconsistent performance.
    **C. Mindset:**
    * **Definition:** How you respond to challenges, mistakes, and uncertainty in the learning process.
    * **Strengths:** Embraces challenges, learns from mistakes, comfortable with experimentation and uncertainty.
    * **Weaknesses:** Avoids challenges, fears mistakes, seeks certainty, struggles with experimentation.
    **D. Retrieval:**
    * **Definition:** The ability to recall and test oneself on previously learned information.
    * **Strengths:** Effective spaced repetition strategies, challenging self-testing, strong recall ability.
    * **Weaknesses:** Lack of review, ineffective testing methods, poor recall.
    **E. Self-Management:**
    * **Definition:** Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, maintain focus, and avoid procrastination.
    * **Strengths:** Effective time management, prioritization skills, focused work sessions, minimal procrastination.
    * **Weaknesses:** Poor time management, difficulty prioritizing, easily distracted, prone to procrastination.
**V. Implementing the Broken Barrel Approach:**
    1. **Identify Your Weaknesses:** Utilize the provided free quiz (link in the original text) to assess your strengths and weaknesses across the first three dimensions.
    2. **Prioritize the Weakest Dimension:** Focus on improving the dimension that scored the lowest.
    3. **Implement Targeted Strategies:** Research and implement specific techniques to address your weaknesses in that dimension.
    4. **Re-evaluate Regularly:** Every 3-4 months, retake the quiz and adjust your focus based on your progress.
**VI. Benefits of the Broken Barrel Approach:**
    * **Personalized Learning:** Tailored to your individual needs and weaknesses.
    * **Faster Improvement:** Focuses on the areas that will yield the most significant gains.
    * **Increased Efficiency:** Eliminates wasted time on ineffective techniques.
    * **Sustainable Growth:** Encourages continuous self-assessment and adaptation.
    **VII. Conclusion:**
The Broken Barrel Approach offers a powerful alternative to traditional learning strategies. By focusing on your weakest areas and embracing a continuous improvement mindset, you can unlock your full learning potential and achieve significant progress in your academic or professional pursuits. The free quiz mentioned in the original text provides a valuable starting point for identifying your weaknesses and embarking on your journey to becoming a more effective learner. Remember, personalized means more effective, and the Broken Barrel Approach is all about personalization.

      Speaking from experience:
1)if you’re diagnosed be sure you’re using your medication
      2) get a study buddy or two for body doubling
      3) take frequent breaks 25 min on 5 min off for water or a stretch.
      4) something like brown noise to help keep focus.
      5) making concept maps always helped me with data organizing and identifying main points.

We tend to be interest-based learners, trying to make the topic interesting helps. For example, I am interested in neuroscience, so whenever I study biology, I try to study it through the lens of neuroscience, if you know what I mean?
Also, if something feels like a drag, try challenging yourself in creative ways. For example, I try to think of my tasklist as something like a training regime, like I'm in some kind of training camp.

@@MrAlandp I have ADHD and what helps me is:
-study spot that’s used only for studying, so you can associate the place with studying
-make your study spot nice and change it often if you find you’re losing interest in it
-make studying exciting with nice notebooks, pens, devices if you’re not into writing by hand and introduce small new items
-rain sounds or as someone already suggested white noise
-study something you have actual interest in
-set deadlines for whatever you’re studying to keep yourself going, if you can sign up for an exam to make it even more interesting
-try not to burn out-keep checking in with yourself, are you tired, have you eaten, drank enough water etc.
-take power naps if you’re feeling overwhelmed
      Edit.to add:
      - make studying a habit (😂)
-study with “study with me” videos (free body double+timewatch you don’t have to think about)
-Pomodoro 25/5 or 25/10 is what works best for me personally

The videos of Justin Sung really helped me a lot. I've watched a lot of his videos and have learned already the "Big Picture" of how to study smarter.
It's mainly about how to ENCODE information better and more efficiently to RETRIEVE those information easily when needed. The most helpful thing I've learned from his videos is that I've always used LOWER-ORDER LEARNING (e.g. memorizing and understanding) instead of using HIGHER-ORDER LEARNING (e.g. seeing the BIG PICTURE of things and HOW all the pieces of information are RELATED to each other) which caused me to have an ineffective ENCODING system.
So yes, he does give the real things freely on UA-cam. It actually made learning for me a fun experience as you get to be a 'detective' and see how all the information fits together.
You just have to search for the correct video to watch. Maybe you should start with the PERRIO Learning System video (summarizes his teachings in a 12 min video).

If you ever get a chance, it'd be interesting to hear how you think about reading / learning from books that aren't necessarily related to what you're currently studying, but rather caught your interest for whatever reason. People have different ideas about this, but most of them focus on just taking notes and/or these days obviously integrating them into a second-brain. Probably not as fitting the channel as much as what you tend to upload, but if you can fit it in somewhere it'd be cool to hear how you go about this!

Often people do look at things that don't really work well and define it as "weakness" or "short comings". The approach here though is still very different. Why? Because it first sought to understand what actually is important in the big picture and tried to understand each component at it's respective role/importance. And THEN tries to look at the weakest link with an understand on how to address it. Very different from what people normally do which is like: "oh you are bad at this, that is why you will never be able to do x and y". Which in itself is a fixed and not open mindset.

The test is only to tell you which dimension you need to improve first. The video is about you improving each of your 5 learning dimensions, everyone has them and we should improve them to increase our performance in studies. In short, it is about improving each one:
      1. learning and memorizing the material;
      2. selecting and using the best methods and materials for each thing you want to learn;
      3. having positive thinking when faced with challenges and mistakes;
      4. taking tests and recall;
      5. setting aside time and space to study with focus;
You need to train yourself to be able to reasonably perform the 5 things in your study process. He probably actually explains how to improve these things in the course, but this video already gives us a goal to follow.

Study focusing on reasons behind: why this is true? How can I replicate this results? How can I explain this to a one year younger person?
If this is not what you're struggling with, try to find the logic and test it to its limits: which cases do not follow this logic and why, or cases where one can doubt it applies for, why it really applies.

    • @crix_h3eadshotgg992

Good advice from the dude above me, if a bit hard to read.
Also, these 2 things have helped me the most:
      Build from fundamentals.
I can’t stress this enough, maybe you can get away with visualisations in the early stages, but please practice from the absolute beginning (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, equations, triangles, squares, etc. Etc.) till they become second nature, because 98% of the time the sole reason you don’t understand something is because you didn’t know the prerequisites well enough.
The second thing is realising that you can learn any topic of math to arbitrary levels of understanding. There is no limit. You can understand *everything* in math deeper, so don’t feel stupid if you think you know all the prerequisites well enough, and that that isn’t the issue. Look up “Using spaced repetition to see through a piece of mathematics” by Micheal Nielsen if you want some arguments for that, cause I don’t have the time to type that shit. Ignore the spaced repition aspect, just focus on his experience with matrix diagonalization and the essay he read about the *equals sign*.
Any topic. Good luck! You can definitely do it.

Hi Justin. I've been applying your methods and this helped tremendously, so thank you.
However, there are still some specific areas in which I struggle to apply it. Specifically, I'm trying to learn about a library in a programming langage. That library is used to perform mathematical operation on matrices and vectors. Each operation has a specific name and arguments order.
It's very hard for me not to make my notes super linear in this case, and I can barely group methods together (for example methods to create matrices, then methods to perform operations on them...) but my chunking stops there, and most importantly, it's super hard to find relationships, and retrieving the name of the methods is super hard. Being able to memorize & retrieve the name of the methods is what makes my day to day work much faster
Same thing apply to learn linux or windows specific commands.
Do you have any tips on that?
