As a ten year old I remember playing this in my local supermarket, the year was about 1984. This was my favorite game, I could get up to the icebox stage but always got stuck there. Aw the good old days, arcades, riding bikes around the neighborhood, Michael Jackson and Madonna on the radio, Return of the Jedi and Indiana Jones in the theater, the Cosby Show on TV, before Playstation, XBox, Netflix and UA-cam. Life was so innocent and good back then, damn feeling old now lol.
This video is a great strategy guide! I’ve been playing the Arcade Archives version on my Switch and I’m completely addicted to this classic. Your video has been an incredible resource. Thanks for posting this!
+Dariusz Kedziora Thanks for the compliment. I may not be the best as there are other great players on this game. Check out some of the Mario Bros. doubles co-op. Those are a little different and actually more difficult.
@@NitroModelsAndComics So how are your scores coming along? I might add that I have gotten greedy in my games and it usually causes me to die or makes the phase go on longer than necessary which could result in a lost man. Even my 4.8M game ended because I was greedy on my last death which most likely cost me a real good chance at the WR as I was only 600K away.
@@whompmaster I continually improve. I've gotten almost to the place Boyer is. I am allowing coins to pass by for the sake of finishing the level. It still goes against my grain and I constantly berate myself. But, I did foster that greed to a great deal and it serves me well as I can still get the odd coin after I survey the entire board for risk/reward. I'm on a 2.5 million track currently.
@@NitroModelsAndComics Those are great numbers! Your next goal would be to find a partner as it's a whole different experience in game play. BTW, I am Boyer. :-)
4:02:51 starts the beginning of a very difficult crab level. I couldn't make it down to the bottom to POW. I'm surprised I didn't end my game there. Also, 4:05:50 becomes a very difficult situation where I very easily could have died. Very close death at 4:12:26
Never fails, I watch a gameplay video and get to thinking "I can do that, piece a' cake." So I fire up the Super RetroCade, load up Mario Bros, and its "Game Over" before the first screen is clear.
@Whomp in the arcade version Mario can only do an arc jump. He cannot do a jump straight up and then move just slightly left or right, like the jump @2:29 onto the pow. That jump isn't possible in the arcade game or if it is I've never been able to do it or seen any one and I've been playing it since it came out 40 years ago.
This very well is possible on the arcade version too. Remember, this MAME version is exactly like the arcade version. It's just the roms from the arcade PCB. If you tap the joystick left or right and jump right afterwards he will jump and move over a slight bit at the same time. It's how I can get on the POW so easily.
I never got past stage 10 of the arcade version and so i also never knew about those falling ice blocks wich were never present in both the nes and atar 7800 versions of it so i just couldn’t know about it,but it is what it is.
Back around 84-85 I was really good at this game. I think I was probably in the mid 50s levels at least. My dad had a job working for the national park service on the outer banks of NC. We stayed in a campground in frisco and I was friends with the guy who’s dad owned the campground and video game room and laundromat across the street. My friend would snatch the keys to the game and we would play for hours. His oldest brother was so good at punch out. He would play through like 8 times without losing. There was another guy who was early 30s I’d guess and he was really good at donkey Kong jr. he would go through the process a half dozen times before losing. I got to the point where I could get through all the maps once by watching him. The summer before on ocracoke island there was a guy that would go through tron 5-6 times without losing. I don’t know how well that compares but I had a lot of good memories of those games.
I play on an actual arcade game. Unfortunately, some of the moves Mario makes are impossible on an arcade version. I'd like to see an arcade version world record. Can't seem to find one.
This emulation on MAME is pretty much exactly the same as the arcade. Maybe some sounds are a tad off but the game play is the same. ua-cam.com/video/yPc5WVquINc/v-deo.html
Wow! I've only bothered to go as far as rolling the score over on the Atari 2600 version. Didn't know the arcade had those icicles. Speaking of the Atari version, they really went above and beyond with it. Doesn't look great but they hardly cut corners. The shellcreepers, sidesteppers, fighterflies, and slipices all make appearances and function as intended!
Bruceleeeroy He is probably using WolfMAME .106 and not using the sound samples file. One needs to use the sound sample file in order to get all the game sounds in WolfMAME .106
Bruceleeeroy As far as I remember it had the running sample sound but I think sometime it's a louder sample sound compared to other samples. I remember hearing him run during the game though.
whompmaster Interesting because it's totally gone on the UA-cam video. I played the same MB rom on a different emulator and it sounded perfect. On two other emulators it sounds like nails on a chalkboard.
If you are only missing audio then you can load these sample files into MAME. I don't recall but if you use newer versions on MAME this might not be necessary, I don't recall. See Mario.zip. samples.mameworld.info/

@@The_Deep_Blue Actually, what I did was just DL a newer version of the ROM set (I guess newer versions of MAME use different files and a new version of MAME won't work with some older ROMs). You're probably having the same problem. Just try looking for, and DLing the latest version of the ROM set you can find. I got a set with a working version of this ROM from the Internet Archive as I recall. I'm pretty sure that they're actually legal form there and it's a pretty trustworthy site too. Hope this helps! 🙂
I usually just spent hours on the first board hitting the fast fireball until I got a couple hundred thousand, maybe even a million and then moved on. My high is about what you've gotten.
I don't know about MAME but on the arcade version, I've gotten 2 million on the first 2 boards. Takes hours but all you have to do is keep hitting the orange fireball.
Great job but unfortunately, this is NOT the world record anymore. From Wiki:On October 16, 2015, Steve Kleisath obtained the world record for the arcade version at 5,424,920 points verified by Twin Galaxies.
For example: "Sound samples for Donkey Kong on mame .106: samples.mameworld.info/wav/dkong.zip Place this file in the samples folder and then enable samples by going to File: Properties: Sound: Check the box to enable samples."

I'm priming up my Mario Bros chops and going after the big score. Nice play here. I'm a tad more greedy and that usually gets me in trouble.
No reason to get greedy in this game because it has no known kill screen. Just kill the critters and make it to the next phase.
