Absolutely EPIC classic arcade game! Team Taito really hit a homerun with Zoo Keeper. The graphics, gameplay, and especially the sound effects are all top-notch. Just hearing it brings back all those great arcade era memories. Thanks for the gameplay my friend, great stuff indeed!

This video unlocked a key strategy for the game for me... PLAY CONSERVATIVELY!! Methodical and life preservation is the way to go. Now if only I could stop myself from resisting the prizes on the coconut levels or going for the huge point jump, I would be golden! :)
he is trying to set up bigger jumps,it's just they didn't work out (or form properly) you can only play conservative for so long! each game is a slight bit different.

I'm playing this now, and I understand the tactic to run right then left, but every time I do it, they always mix directions. Is this with a harder/easier rom perhaps, or am I missing something? Perhaps a tiny delay at the start maybe?

I would recommend that you mute the sound on this video because otherwise the sound will terribly grate on your ears. Also, notice that the player doesn't generally try to keep the animals trapped but instead uses jumping combos to rack points. Now to highlights: 0:27 First screen cleared with 1,100 points. 1:03 First monkey screen cleared with 19,780 points 2:25 First bonus keeper opportunity (after second monkey screen) with 78,980 points. 3:00 100,000 points reached on first screen after earning bonus keeper 7:20 First life lost - 874,580 points on Round 8. 8:25 1,000,000 points reached (score rolls over each one million but displays properly on high score table) on replay of Round 8 after losing first life. 10:42 2,000,000 points reached - from Round 9 onward the player is earning at least 500K points on each non-bonus round! (Sometimes he even rolls the score more than once in a round because jump combos can break six digits in terms of points!) 12:48 First monkey screen with invisible platforms! The invisible platforms will occur on every other monkey screen from now on. (This was not intended by the game's programmer, but he decided to leave it in anyways.) 28:46 Interesting glitch with bonus point display - the last digit of "20,000" is stretched out and "striped" in the far right margin of the screen! (Goes outside the "proper" space of video memory?) 32:14 Glitch with round counter - rolls back to 10 (from 19) instead of incrementing to 20! This pattern will repeat each ten rounds. 45:38 Nine reserve lives earned - this is the max the game will display. More lives can be earned (see 59:11 for evidence of this) but the counter will not roll over or increase further. 52:55 Round 30 completed (i.e. the round counter has rolled twice). 1:11:36 Player loses four lives in Round 38. 1:15:14 Player loses all but one of his remaining lives (including bonus life earned between 38 and 39) in Round 39. 1:16:33 Round 40 completed. 1:32:07 Player is on last life - Round 47. 47,000,000 point mark reached around this time as well. 1:33:32 Start of Round 48 - game over occurs on this round.

I couldn't believe that the score would go that high I would of thought when you reach 1000000 points it would set your score back to 0 and you would have the first place score as something like 10000 but it was an illusion
I love the sounds on this game. It doesn't match what you would expect from a game like this. If you didn't know what this game was, it sounds like a Williams game.
@@umjames The sound is what stands out for me. The game is fun, sure, but those wacky, "what the hell was that?" animal sounds, the constant "THUD" when laying bricks, and that awesome digitized gong feel just so satisfying.
I'm confused. Why is the sound distorted? Zookeeper naturally lags and skips frames in later levels, but I can't help think that the lag caused in this gameplay is from the audio not syncing properly. Looks like slowdown IMHO which makes it a touch easier. Most notably at 34:26.
This guy plays very conservatively. Haven't seen any 1,000,000 or better jumps as I usually try to go for them on the lion boards. My high BTW is 12.2 million with my best jump being 8,000,000 on the 2nd lion board.

The problem with this game is that the points should have been scaled WAY down. There shouldn't be games where you can get 30 million for one jump. Everything should have been scaled down 100x.
I played this back in the day at Chuck E Cheese. My highest score was 102,000,000 It actually flips over on the high score board because it can't show more than 99 mil. I had 2 30,000,000 jumps during the game. And a 15,000,000. The high score board on that game was crazy. I think score 10 was like 20,000,00 ish. I've started playing the mame version so we'll see how i do.

This is the MAME World Record...REALLY??? I remember scoring 5 times that on the arcade version back in the day. I own a MAME machine that I built from scratch. When I get the time I'll need to polish my skills and crush this record.

This game could've benefitted with a faster processor, or an additional one, it's really struggling with all of those sprites.

At first, I thought my computer was crapping out, the sounds gets distorted like in the video then the CPU is running at 100%.
Might be that the computer which was used to record the video wasn't quite fast enough to perfectly record the footage smoothly

Why is the music so corrupted? Without the player video captured alongside it's hard to prove this wasn't slowed down, not to be that guy

That would happen sometimes in the higher levels. Rendering (espcially in the 1980s arcade) would take a hit and you would get stuck.

MAME records is a joke , because it can be easily changed or hacked, just saying.
they check the settings when you send it in,but I know what you are saying.this guy is a very legitimate player!
