Super Mario Bros. 3 Warpless is my current project and this is my current best time. I've taken some time to upload all of my previous runs of this category and put them in a playlist for those who enjoy watching the progression over the last few years. One thing I've always appreciated about SMB3 is that that when you're on one of the boats and you have to jump on those nuts to get them to turn and advance across the platform, the threading is in the correct direction. It's 50/50 to get it right in the first place, but I like to think it was deliberate.
Who cares if he didn't get WR, he cut 45 SECONDS off of his personal best! That's amazing progress to be proud of! GJ! :3

I love seeing the little bits of enjoyment that this game brings out. Like matching the ship music with the fireball button and pressing back and forth to look like you're spinning in the propeller blades on the tank. Those little details in his playing bring back so many memories. Thanks bro!

Remember the movie "The Wizard," which was basically a 90 min advertisement for this game...If Darbian was the kid playing in the tournament, everybody would think this game boring :)
That 3/8 level with Big Birtha used to get me every time as a nipper. You just aren't phased. Legendary. Definitely getting there, mush.

I always think how fascinating it is that speedrunners know every jump in every level. Just watch 5-4 at 30:50 for an example... Respect!
Memorization is a huge part of speedrunning. As in most games, knowledge is power.
watching these videos is like riding home when you've been out all night drinking and your sober friend picks you up. you can just sit back and enjoy the ride

I recently got hooked on watching people play mario speed runs. I don' t know why or how, or more importantly why I spend my time doing this.
Several questions:
How many attempts did it take you to get this time?
How many levels did you practice with before you starter recording?
How is each jump perfected and fluid to your next move? Comes with repetition and knowing where obstacles/enemies are?
1) You can see the attempt counter below my webcam. This run was attempt #292. If you tune into my next stream you'll see that the number has gone up quite a bit since achieving this time.
2) I've put practice into each level. At the beginning of each stream I'll typically only practice a handful of the more challenging levels with extra focus on things that I messed up my previous set of attempts.
3) Lots of repetition, studying runs done by others and having helpful people in my chat (or on discord) to help answer and questions I have. Since I play on console I would normally not be able to practice as efficiently as I could on an emulator since I wouldn't be able to use save states, however there is a device called a PowerPak that I own which allows for save states on console. Additionally, I can load others ROMs and other members of the community has created what's known as a "practice cart" which is a ROM I can load which is meant to assist with speedrunning. This rom allows you to walk over levels without completing, supports pressing start + select to exit a level and gives you a full inventory of every item in the game which will never be depleted. This way you can efficiently practice anything in the game.

you can try to practice each level by using emulator. save state and load state helps a lot. helps you save time so you try a certain stage over and over without a problem.
Agreed! It's like I get to live my childhood dream through somebody else of beating this game. I've never seen the end of the game until today and I'm now in my late 30s. Exciting stuff!

On W7-1, that no clip was cool. Never knew. This speed run is amazing. Back in my day (Mid 90s) People were running out of ideas on how to beat this game. People actually started to speed run playing through a mirror so everything was backwards.
Ah! Super Mario Bros. 3, a classic! I still have my copy I bought when it came out. $53 after taxes and its still in excellent condition. I regret throwing away the original box.

Dude this is flawless. I can't tell you how many controllers I broke trying to beat this game. I just stick to games like Sim City and Wheel of Fortune now.

It's awesome to see someone else play it....but man, talk about anxiety though lol.
If you look really closely you can see hes played this before.
This is so embarrassing when I was younger I spent hours trying to defeat all the enemies and get as many coins as I could and never thought of just racing past everything as Darbian did in the video to beat it.
Both are equally valid ways to play the game. It’s just a matter of what you prefer. If you’re interested, you can find some high score runs of this game that use lots of interesting strategies for getting points.
I love how the creators spent long hours creating level designs to be appreciated and this guy just destroys the whole game.

You inspired me to try to beat this game, I’ve had it for around 30 years.
This is just so cool to see done for some reason these speed runs feel so smooth and seamless compared to the origional super mario maybe cause of p speed making the running just be mario gliding along the ground

For someone that things that the 7-1 is imposible, it is not. As a beginner, In only 3 minutes, I did it by my first time. In 10 minutes I did it 15 times.

I’ve watched a couple of these speed runs and im impressed by the work and dedication. I’m glad to see the cultural stigma of playing and enjoying video games is going away. I used to get called nerd, Nintendo freak, get a life etc. was harder to accept it as a legitimate hobby by people back in early 90s
