I’m a United States citizen who served in the Marine Corps during the Cold War as a very young man. My government taught us how Russians were our enemies wanting to destroy our country and way of life by whatever means necessary. Fast foreword years later and having the opportunity to meet and speak with many Russians I realized they are no different then Americans and our governments are the ones causing conflict and animosity toward one another. It’s a shame and sometimes I think they cause conflict and devise with other nations and between our people within our own country just for themselves. Job security.
Both Russians I met in the Marines wished we would attack and liberate the communist countries.

I am an American with some firsthand knowledge. I have been to mainland China several times. Most of the time not in Shanghai or Bejing. 3 of my children have lived there for 5 months each teaching English. I can tell you first hand that the Chinese people are kind and very hard working. It is crazy how capitalist it is for a communist country. We should be careful about juging a people by their government. My .02

I know avoiding Chinese products does very little to the Chinese govt. But it makes me feel good. And I know its impossible to 100percent avoid Chinese stuff, but when I can, I do.

As a machinist of 27 years, it's all about quality for me. It has nothing to do with where it was made. It's either good or bad and every country makes both. Here in America we think our junk is the best out there. It's not! Our biggest problem in manufacturing is greed. So everything is made way too fast and quality is ofter over looked. It's all about how many can we make in a day. Our workers have more pressure put on them about quantity over quality. Then we turn around and over price ourselves for poorly made junk.
Take a Becker knife.. remove the coating and see how sloppy they are made..

The question you should ask yourself is. In the 1940s would I buy a German product? And if the answer is yes then Chinese stuff is for you. It's impossible to not buy some Chinese stuff. But I think everyone should mitigate their Chinese purchases as much as possible.
Not every single German was a member of German National Socialist Worker's Part in 1940. Not every single German supported NSDAP. There were even Germans who actively fought the NSDAP and paid with their freedom and lives for that. Being German in these times doesn't automatically make one a monster.

I grew up in China and now been in the US for 20 some years. My religious group is being persecuted in China and so I cannot go back, as I would be put in jail. So yeah, I see a lot more of the dark side of things in China that most people aren't aware of, some of which are exceedingly disturbing.
But to me, I have ZERO problems of others buying Chinese products, and I do myself. I see no reason to spend more of your hard-earned money just to avoid made-in-China proudcts. That's not really the point.
I think it's more important for people to just have the awareness of all the terrible things that are happening there below the surface. Many people are deceived by the superficial things and think that everything is great there. Some younger people in the West are even starting to envy how the communists do things. That is just so dangerous. They don't see all the bad things from that kind of regime because all the bad things are well hidden. If you are a westerner visiting China, you just won't see it. People also need to realize that China is slowly putting out its communist ideology and trying to have you make sense out of that, and eventually the West will lose its ground. Once you have to experience yourself how bad it is, it will be too late!

This is an interesting topic. Years ago Ray Mears offered his Woods lore knife as the bushcraft knife to use, he did credit Lars Falts with the design. Mears charged a lot of money for his knife. Several years later Condor came out with the bush lore a clone of Mears knife at a fraction of the cost. Now we have Casstrom knives Lars Falts bushcraft knife also expensive. We have three knives of the same profile with different choices of scales and steels. I would bet most Condor knife owners would have bought a Casstrom if they could afford it.
In China, some types of knives are regulated tools, and for most Chinese, the most commonly used knives are Chinese kitchen knives. Because there is basically no opportunity for long-term outdoor life and extreme use of knives, most people will not buy expensive knives, so there is no broad domestic market, and therefore there is no knife factory that develops high-end knives. Based on this big environment, some small factories or workshops make cheap knives or imitation knives in order to survive. It really doesn't make any sense for you to compare knives costing 100 yuan with Fällkniven's knives that cost more than 100 dollars!
Good conversation, I'm on the same page for just about every point.
I've bought a fair amount of camping equipment from China that is good quality, and as far as i know not copying any other products. I've also bought some that turned out to be cheap nearly worthless crap.
That said, I've bought some products made by western brands with a good reputation that just have some awful manufacturing defects. In my experience, trusted brands are more reliable, but everyone messes up.
On the CPM3V thing, any CPM steel should be from Crucible in the USA. It might be possible to make a knockoff, but it wouldn't be actual CPM3V
I absolutely agree with everything you guys say. There are a lot of Chinese companies making original designs with great materials that are worth supporting.
I don't agree with the decisions of their government, but that doesn't mean the regular people, who make up the vast majority of the population, are bad.
Companies like WE/Civivi, Reate, QSP, many others make such great original designs that I love. As long as I'm not supporting counterfeits, I have zero problem with it.

I would like to see your reaction when they start making and selling in china your DBK knife and selling for 50$ , and won't know about it.
Literally every leading country has engaged in and continues to engage in horrible atrocities. Even in terms of manufacturing, most things "Made in America" or "Made in Italy" are made in the places in those countries where regulations and laws for things like working conditions and fair pay are loose at best. China has a history of cheap manufacturing which is outsourced from American industries, for example. It's silly to dismiss products because of their place of origin. **What's more important is to make sure the company you're buying from pays their employees well and manufactures their product using sustainable methods.

“Made in Italy” is a stamp that you can obtain only if it’s actually designed and made on Italian soil. Same as “Swiss made” for example. European laws are extremely strict on this.
They really are a quality mark, unlike “US made” which usually is just designed in US but created, built, manufactured and shipped from China.

I avoid Benchmade. Why you may ask? The last three BM knives i own all have flaws (blade centering way off, uneven grind, ...). My dealer contacted their customer support and was told this is not a case for the so called "lifetime warranty", because it doesn't affect the function of the knife. Maybe you have to be DBK to get a good BM and customer support, not the Average Joe.

Thats something we cant argue about. We know we might get a different treatment than others and the only way to work around is go anonymous. But we also dont have the time to check all of that with just us two.
Maybe if we grow and we'd be able to hire people for DBK that would be a good thing to check and take into our reviews
Thank you for doing this. There are some jingoistic snobs in this community that would prefer us to all just use stuff from Buck and a handful of other US made companies, but that is so absurd and limiting. Good knives are one of those thing where the politics of various producing countries just doesn't really matter. Hell even when you buy foreign, the money still circulates in your own economy to an extent; the truck and train drivers, the delivery sorting centers, the longshoremen, all jobs in your own country that get some of it. A lot also believe long unraveled stereotypes about Chinese manufacturing. This isn't the cold war-00s anymore, China has a fully developed industrial base now full of seasoned craftsmen who take pride in their work and have the resources to make great stuff.
I buy as much as I possibly can locally, to say it politely. The regime has its fingers in almost all the big companies. But, it’s impossible to not have any Chinaproducts in your household.

That's right, just buy the knife regardless of price, but buy it for it's unique design and style.. just go out and enjoy it. Go chop something, do a survival outing. Life is short. Just go have fun. I have all kinds of bowies, lots of it Made in Japan like Fallkniven Nl1 Thor (bought it 10 years ago for $400, Fallkniven Modern Bowie (bought it second hand looked like factory seconds for $500, Gen 2 Aus 6 Cold steel Trailmaster, San Mai Trailmaster, MTech 151 trailmaster clone $29-$30) and Mtech MT096 bowie ($16), Schrade SCHF45 ($50 but got mine for $35 on sale Amazon).. Now I forge my knives out of 5160. So what I'm saying is that I did learn about the shape of the hamguri shape that the expensive Japan bowies come in and sharpen my blades the same..and man does it cut. So I have fun with all my blades since I have a huge yard and need regular chopping to maintain the branches and trimmings.
To be honest Chinese knives are, in my opinion, going from trash to excellent depending on the brands involved. I will never complain about my Ganzo, Artisan Cutlery, Brother or QSP knives. They're all excellent. On the other hand I bought a S&W knife made in China that is almost crap, and I have two Rough Ryder and one Shrade that are average.
On the other hand, if I am thinking in terms of choices that I prefer to take in my life, I am now trying to : 1/ not to buy too many knives in the future in order to use the ones I already owe, 2/ try to give my money to a european brand/manufacturer (Manly, Salamandra, J&V, Joker, Florinox, Au Sabot, Joker, Maserin, Fox, etc) if I buy one, 3/ take care of my knives in order to be able to transmit them to my kids, nephews, friends, one day
But if we're only talking about knives overall quality China has a ratio price/quality that is incredible sometimes, but many other countries can also do it !

Crucible Industries only exists in the USA. So if you buy authentic CPM steel knife blades, the steel came from America and if they can assemble it cheaper with the same quality of build and sell it cheaper, it's actually is a good thing to have competition in the market. That helps keep prices competitive. I know you already know this. I just wanted to sound like I'm smart, lol!

We did not use 3V made in China. The 3V we used was made in Syracuse New York.
Let's not forget that Japan was the "China" of the 60's and 70's. Most Japanese stuff was not very good, or just a bad copy of a western design (called "Japcrap" in the US). But now they are considered one of the best manufacturers in the world. I also differentiate between western brands that have things made in China, and "Chinese brands". There are lots of excellent Chinese companies making their own designs under their own name. Then there is the difference between "dedicated factories" and "contract factories" . So the first is a western brands' own factory in China (BWM and Mercedes), the other is a western brand shopping for a generic factory to make their product (Apple -> Foxconn). So "Made in China" says absolutely nothing, they can make anything as good as anyone in the world if the customer is willing to pay for it. But you can also request a knife made of cheese, whatever you want.

Regarding knives, The Chinese only clone Knives made by US and European knife makers. They do not clone original knife brands made by Chinese companies like WE, Civivi, Artisan, etc.
If you do not think there are WE, Civivi, Artisan, ect. clones out there... man, do I have news for you. I have friends who work for those companies and they have to deal with clones just like SpyderCo and Benchmade do.
I weighed in on the last video in the comments. My thoughts: I have nothing against the Chinese people. I have Chinese friends, not just Chinese by ethnicity, but friends who were literally born and raised in China. I’ve tutored Chinese immigrants with their english. I’ve dated Chinese girls. I love Chinese food 🤣. I’d love to go visit China someday. It’s their GOVERNMENT that causes problems. They are horrific. That being said, I have made a promise to not support ANYTHING Chinese made If at all possible, when there are quality products, as good or better, being made in free countries who value human life, integrity, and common decency. Example: I’d totally like to get the DBK knife, but I can’t stand the Dutch! I’m so racist against them! I’ve never been to Dutchlandia, but I can’t imagine the noise with everyone walking around in their wooden shoes, or the smug looks on cooks faces when using their Dutch ovens.

I have to admit that I have bought some Ganzo knives to be used as beaters in the past . I have given most of them away. I do still own some Chinese designed Kizer and Civivi knives, though.
I like my Ganzo..good for EDC, because if you lose it, you won't cry. My Spyderco H1 Pacific Salt, when I bought it was $59, now is $100! As I knife lover, I use and collect knives from all price ranges from the $700 Fallkniven thor to the cheap but good Mtech 151, 096 in the $20 range.
I was given a soyderco endura 4 Emerson wave knife with a V-10 blade steel measurements I made told me it is a China clone due to its smaller dimensions BUT I was appalled because after 3 years in pocket it has no signs of corrosion/rusting - looks like the original except for dimensions and still sharp!
Always remember, if you think you hate the Chinese government.... just imagine how it's citizens feel.

My problem with Clones is that they try to pass them off as "Real" and charge full price to trick you.
I try my best to buy American.
But I just bought Civivi Cogent because I couldn't get an American made button lock. Always out of stock and not many designs to choose from. Build it in America and I'll buy it.

I've said it a few times in the comment section of the previous video and so too in today's. China's scene of politics contain some very questionable ethics, that does not mean that the companies do. There are almost 1,5 billion people in China. Just as ANYWHERE else in the world the people will have differing and opposing views.
Furthermore. Not everything that comes from China is crap. Just like in the west there are bad stuff just as there is good.
And to all the hypocrites that claim that they don't buy stuff from China... Yes, you do. If you don't own a car that contains components manufactured in China you definitely sit on a phone or a computer typing these comments. Tech that also contain components supplied almost exclusively from China.

I've been making and collecting knives for over 35 years. Chinese products in all areas have improved in the last 10 years. Complaining about human rights is pointless. I'll bet 75% of the goods in your home come from PRC. Politics and price.
American manufacturers should start making their own products again. Pay more? Yep. But we wouldn't run out chips for our cars. We send trees to China, they send us back furniture. Labour costs. We shouldn't support manufacturers of clone products. But there are tons of Asian producers of original knive designs with genuine, as advertised steel. Two Sun, Artesian Cutlery, and Custom Knife Factory. The world is getting smaller. ✌
I recall the story of Rockie boots who had to outsource to China because their American man boots that maybe cost 30$ more than their Chinese competitors stopped selling because people aren’t willing to pay for American. We shot ourself in the foot

Do you have any proof that the knife was really 3v? There has beennmany situations in the past where the stelel used in Chinese knives was not what was advertised.

I've sourced ZDP-189 from Japan, S35-VN from USA, M390 from Austria. The idea of faking 3V (USA) and offering it to my customers makes me sick. I love and respect knives and the community too much to hoodwink you over material that is totally obtainable.
I went into a gun shop a few months ago. The shotgun I decided to get the salesman told me that it was made in one of the Eastern European countries. When he brought it up front I saw “made in China” on the box. I almost did not buy the gun, but though it would be funny in case of a red dawn situation. And just to clarify I don’t have a problem with the people, just the CCP and the thought of an invading force
If you want an inexpensive D2 axis lock or flipper for around $26, the Chinese Eafengrow and Ganzo knives are on Amazon. I'm probably not going to buy one but they look decent.
you can get a RAT2 in d2 for about the same. might be the best folder for the money

@@poisonousnut I have a rat 2. Don't understand the hype. It's just to small to be comfortable with the handle shape. It's a decent knife, but it's not fantastic or anything. The Zancudo is the same size and has a much better shape overall.
@@DevDog67 u might have bigger hands. i had a Zancudo and the palm swell was a little too big for me. i like my knife taking up as little pocket space as possibletoo. but my favorite edc is still my Para3.
@@poisonousnut hmmmm. Yeah it must be hand size. The Zancudo is about as small as I can stand for a knife, it really feels almost too small and flimsy to use as a serious folding work knife.
For something to compare with, I find that a knife like the Kershaw blur (3.3" or 3.4" blade) is really close to the ideal size for my hands. I just wish it had a guard or flipper to protect my hand from the blade.
Unfortunately there's not a lot of good knives in the 3.25" to 3.3" blade size range. They're almost all 3" or smaller, or 3.5-3.8" which is something I consider to be slightly too big.

Hey there. I had no idea there'd been so many bad reactions to your previous video. I mean, it's just an objective video about a knife. You guys just tried it out and commented on if it was a good knife or not. I don't think anybody should object to that. You guys gave your honest opinion on whether, as a knife, that one was worthwhile or not. Whether or not one should buy any product from China is another topic up for a different debate. Speaking of which, in an unrelated topic, I think you guys should consider getting insurance for your equipment and knives, at this point, for your company.It's a matter of protecting all the time, money and effort you guys have put into this project. For years China has supplied Swiss watch manufacturers with components. As long as the components are assembled in Switzerland the watch can claim to be Swiss made.
China has decades of manufacturing experience and can make very high end products as well as cheap crap.
It would be difficult to boycott Chinese products as they supply everything from pharmaceutical products to the clothes we wear.
The manufacturers and employees are just trying to make a living.
There will always be a market for cheap crap, people just shouldn’t complain when it doesn’t last. You get what you pay for.

I'm proud that the Chinese people can manage to contribute to the prosperity and well-being of the whole human family while having this cancer called "communist party" / "forced atheism" in her body. If China can do well under the shadow of this horrible disease, imagine how much more will she be able to achieve if she is healthy?
You have a better open mind than most people I see. You can distinguish good and bad and in between without a political ideal that blinds a person which is very unhealthy. If there were more people like you. Friends and family's of this day and age wouldn't be disowning each other and waste years of relationship development because of a different political belief. You keep things objective when need be by products. You don't generalize a whole group based on a numbered few that is not everybody. I’ve done my best for decades to not buy Chinese product for more and more reasons all the time. It’s really difficult and even when you think you’ve got a non-Chinese product it’s possible you’ll find out later it is actually Chinese made. It was interesting hearing the DBK guys feelings about this.

I have a few Chinese knives and the action on them is better than some of my American manufactured knives. My Civivis, for example, have fantastic action. A Spyderco that costs 3 times as much, is not as good.
People need to drop the racism and look at the quality. China and cheap still happens, it’s an option but they are also making some very nice tools. 🇨🇳

One thing that worries me is that the rapid improvement in Chinese made knives will further reduce US production and one day 100% knive sold in US are made in China, just like the T Shirts, Sneakers etc. and if there is a supply chain problem, There will be no knive in USA.

The Cpm 3v is all made by Crucible Steel in the USA. The MBK knife is American designed, shaped and heat treated in China, using American sreel.
You are correct. We are also cognizant of the heat treat and had a target HRC range. The biggest stress and focus of this whole project was ensuring the heat treat would be good.
There are a lot great knife companies from China. When something is good is good, no matter who or where it's made!

I’m really glad to see more people having these types of open and thoughtful conversations. I try to avoid Chinese products when it’s practical, but as you’ve discovered, sometimes it’s rather difficult. We need to bring back manufacturing jobs to the rest of the world, and I will vote with my wallet to support quality and ethically made products from various countries.

How the blade is hardened is even more important than the steel type. (I have 1095 blades that outperform some of my 3V, S30 and m-390 blades. (with the exception to being rust-prone of course.)
As for getting lower quality budget knives - Buy Once, Cry Once.
This applies if you are looking for something that you expect to last, something you are going to trust your life with, or something you are going to use harder than it was meant to be.
For the "average" person, with normal day-to-day use (opening mail, opening boxes, maybe a little lite whittling, etc) then a cheapo knife will be fine. (with the exception of the Pakistan made knifes....I have never seen one that had a good lock mechanism or good steel...the edge rolls very easily. - I think the problem is their heat treating, or lack of it?)

I think we all know what “China” is all about so when you become a “business” then it’s only natural to try maximising your profit by having your goods produced at the lowest cost. Only controversial argument is should you be supporting a county like China knowing how it operates and exploits its people vs supporting local people/ domestic businesses 🤷🏻♂️. How does it make any sense whatsoever to make products on the other side of the world and then ship them at massive cost? The sense would be to make products close to your market and not have huge transport costs. You know, like in the old days....
Yes completely agree! But sadly this is the reality and the power is where the people spend their money. Anything made locally easily costs around 7x as much and people won’t buy it. They say they will but they won’t because money changes peoples minds sadly. It’s got to change either way. Or china needs to become more expensive or local products cheaper.

While I agree there's some good quality and value for money items you can get from countries such as China (and even Russia) I am doing my most to limit my support for brands based or using items from those countries due to not only the poor working conditions and there oppressive policies internally but also aggressive neo-imperialism of there governments on the world stage. That said I agree with so much being made I find in nearly impossible to put this into practice especially for electronics just due to the nature of the global supply chain but I will always do my best to support local businesses, who sauce there materials in a environmentally consciousness way and treat there workers ethically and who taxes aren't going towards evil governments.

I grew up in a very ethnic neighborhood. My grandparents were immigrants, Italian and Ukrainian. Everyone around us were first or second generation. I am an artist, part time musician and have worked in restaurants. In the world of art, music and food we embrace all countries. Why can't that carry over to everything else? You'll eat in a Chinese restaurant but curse them? I don't understand it.

This felt like “the Chinese almost got our channel shut down, we better pull everything back and maybe not fully kiss up, but definitely be as positive about China as possible so that doesn’t happen again.” In the background you can see UA-cam saying “good. Goooood,” emperor palpatine style.
Obviously, the Chinese government does some shady things that aren’t good, and allowing companies to make clones is just generally really rude and shouldn’t happen. That being said, it’s a HUGE oversight to group all Chinese companies together with the trash clone companies. Reate is one of the best examples of amazing craftsmanship taking place by people who are passionate and dedicated to making the highest quality tools and you can’t help but respect that. The main reason why Chinese products are able to cost a lot less than international competitors is because of economic tampering the government does where they pretty much have closed borders and for Chinese citizens the same amount of money can buy much more on mainland China. I highly doubt this will change anyone’s minds about anything, but the main point is that it’s important to just do your research about companies that you’re purchasing from. People are the same everywhere and dedication to craftsmanship should be recognized around the globe, you just might have to do a bit more research on Chinese companies since the government doesn’t stomp out any of the dubious ones. Anyway, this was a great video and I’m glad to see DBK take a strong stance against racism and hatred! Love you guys
