Prefectural Route 45 Shimonita Usuda Line is a major regional road that runs from Shimonita Town, Gumma Prefecture to Usuda, Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. It crosses the 1,110-meter-high Taguchi Pass located in the central watershed.
This road was previously recorded from Saku City to Shimonita Town in March 2021, but this time it was recorded from the Shimonita side of the starting point to the end of the road. There is snow around the pass, as it snowed the day before.
As we have mentioned before, the area around Taguchi Pass is encroached by Nagano Prefecture on the Gumma Prefecture side east of the pass. There are various theories as to the reason for this, but the Kadokawa Dictionary of Japanese Place Names 20: Nagano Prefecture (Kadokawa Shoten, 1990) states the following The Lord of Shinshu Tanokuchi and a deputy of the Shogunate promised to race at dawn from both sides to establish the boundary at that time, and the place where they met would be the boundary. On the Shinshu side, they started off with their chickens crowing early, which allowed them to spread their territory across the pass to the Kanto side".
Considerably further down the Gumma side of the pass are the villages of Hirokawahara and Masaka, which belong to Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. The pass is narrow, steep, and has sharp curves, making it a rough road, but it is an essential part of the residents' lives, so the snow is removed during the winter and the road is open to traffic all year round.

県道93号田口峠は数年前の国道299号十石峠が通行止めだった時の迂回で一度だけ通ったことがありました。なかなかの険道ですが、冬季でも通行可能なのですね。
山間部はもう雪がこれだけ積もっていたのですね。動画撮影の為とはいえ、雪道の中の走行ご苦労様です。
自分も雪道での運転は何度も経験済みですが、さすがに冬季にこのような狭隘な峠道は走りたくはないですね…。でも集落に暮らす方々にとっては大事な生活道路ですし、通行出来るだけ有難いですよね。
長野県側は峠道を抜けると道が広くなって快走路になりますが、この辺りの雰囲気が国道299号と本当によく似ていると思います。ちなみに日本には函館とここの二つしかないという五稜郭の龍岡城がこの近くにあるんですよね。当時は知らなくて素通りしてしまいましたので、今度この辺りにドライブに行った際には訪れてみたいです。

田口峠を越える動画は数々ありますが、今回の動画が一番綺麗ですね。半世紀前の田口峠（もちろんダートです）は何度もラリーで使われた道で、最初のトンネルの先に白線が引いてあったり、峠の手前にバーストしたタイヤがホイルごと捨ててあったりしたものです。この朝には家の庭に3cmほどの積雪がありましたが、峠は10cmほど積もったようですね。雪の峠越え、お疲れ様でした。

50年前は西上州の林道や地方道或いは峠越えはランドナー乗りのメッカでした。葉がすっかり落ちた峠越えの道は雪があるのでより明るく見通しの良い素晴らしい風景です
