For anyone else that attempts this, all the videos I saw damaged the Fuel Pocket, either the edges got warped from prying or holes were drilled, so I thought the Fuel Pocket was just sacrificial and ordered that along with the Lock Actuator, but I tried something a little different to see if I could get the Fuel Pocket out without damage and it worked! The Lock Actuator was the broken part for me, so I just used pliers to pull on it and that pulls out the left side of the Fuel Pocket with enough space at the edge to slip in a pry tool to keep it pulled out, then using my hand/fingers along the top edge, I just kept pulling out the Fuel Pocket left to right, a little at a time, until it was free. None of the clips broke. This was done on a 2015 s3, and your milage may vary if you are too rough with it, but it does need strong enough yanks to get it free, just nothing crazy.

+1. I pulled on the actuator itself, enough to get a plastic pry tool in, then pryed enough to get my fingers in and i was able to pull it right off. No broken clips, no warped edges. Reinstalled and looked brand new.
Word of warning tho, if you buy a cheaper after-market part (i did) the plastic tabs that hold the fuel door are much flimsyer (actually broke one) than the OEM part and the "click" isn't as positive/satisfying as the OEM part... i guess you get what you pay for. The part is good enough, just not as good.

Why didn't you just pull the red string inside the trunk?, this would open the lid, then just take the fuel cap off, and stick your fingers inside the rubber and pull firmly on the left side (side of the micro switch). If you can't pull, on both sides, from above and below, you have places to insert a small screwdriver that forces internal tongues downward. This will release the part that must be undocked by the left side where the micro switch is.

its stupid but it is better to just go ahead and poke holes to get the tabs that way you dont complete destroy the seal around the edge like you did. And if you keep the holes small enough you can use a torch to kind of seal the holes halfway back so it doesnt look to terrible. Either way this is a dumb design by Audi and you cant even get to the clips from the back by taking the wheelhouse liner out. They want you to break it and replace it so they can keep raking in the big bucks

Thanks for this video, it'll prove to be very helpful as I've got to do the same on my A3 8V.
Fortunally, I've got all the tools required including a set of plastic pry tools and torx bits.
I'll probably put some sturdy painter's tape over the edges of the metal, just to make sure I'm not scratching it.
It's pretty hot outside these days, making plastic parts less brittle, so I'm confident to get the plastic insert out without breaking it.
Unlike the side mirror covers I changed at freezing temperatures, resulting in breaking off one or two latches, but that's another story alltogether...

Hey man, thanks for that tutorial. I've just got it replaced today on A6 C7.5. Took me maybe 15 minutes and I'd score difficulty to 2/10. The actuator cost was £13 and trim tools £3.99 out of Amazon.

Take the outer cover off ie the painted but push it gently in the drivers door direction. Then when off use pin nose plyers to turn the faulty actuator. Worked today for me

Thanks for the video. I was going to order an actuator but sprayed some WD40 on the stem that fits into flap. Overnight it seems to have done the trick. The fuel flap now consistently opens with the remote. If I become stuck again I’ll replace using this method but probably pulling from the stem to avoid damage to the seals.

Thank you! This happened to our 2019 Atlas and it was stuck closed and I had to break off the door. The process was the same and I was able to get a new actuator for $40 from the dealership.

Great job have the same thing going on our audi A6. I’m going to do the same thing audi. Little did I know that the orange cable for the emergency release was actually broke when I went to try it. So I have to feed that through. I took out all the interior on the right side of the trunk to get at it. This way is much easier. Thanks man again greatly appreciate it.
