Fun fact:
Originally, Brel's song was not about Amsterdam but about Antwerp, the song then would've been called: Dans le port D'Anvers. However, Brel ran into problems because Anvers only has 2 syllables and therefore does not fit the song well. Brel therefore changed the city name into Amsterdam (3 syllables) in final version, but the rest of the text remained exactly the same.

It was stated on dutch television (I'm dutch) a few years back, I never forgot about it
@@edj2106 not sure the original was about Antwert but sure is the 3rd version was for the omlimpia in Paris before recorded on the album. i guess you heard the dutch version on the moment/time because it was the usual from producers

Almost the excellent english sub, but you have to live french language to really appreciate his poetry.
That's true, but it's also true of any great poet or writer in translation. My French is very rusty but I still love Brel's work - a lot of English people do.

@@micade2518 makes no sens.Brel has used way worse words in his song even in this one, les putains d'Amsterdam, would be way more rude then rammene leur batards. He says batave not batatd and the only linguistically correct meanings are dutchness dutch language or dutch person.

Imagine that the "story" would take place in France, Italy or Spain: that would then spell "Ils ramènent leurs Français (French) or Gaulois (Gallic), leurs Italiens (Italians) or Espagnols (Spaniards) in full light" ???
Whereas, in view of the crudeness of the lyrics, depicting crude people, I'm pretty convinced that Brel referred to the children these men had out of wedlock ...
But let's not fight over this: that song is a piece of Art, and each one perceives Art in a very personal way.
@@micade2518 I take "Batave" in this context to mean "Dutch prostitute". The rancid accordeon that expires I think means a bed in a whorehouse that stops creaking. And with a proud look, the sailors return their whores to "plain light" - the whorehouse's common area.
@@micade2518 you're wrong ! brel is talking about Dutch women (in french batave is masculine and feminine), they bring them back to light because the dance floor was the darkest place in cabarets (I let you imagine for what reasons😁) while the tables in the bar were very enlightened

On dit comme mocheté un tissu taché de petits eclats, de trous, et là est le mot du poete, il est comparé de mediocité sur un bout de tissu isignifiant à à la beauté d'une voie lactée. ce n'est pas un jeu de mot mais une figure de style poétique, Là est le génie de Brel
