Well to start with, those are two different oil viscosities in your hands; the regular Mobil1 Full Synthetic is 10W-30. Whereas the Mobil1 Extended Performance is 5W-30, so that would be the most logical explanation of why you're losing more oil. Also, the Extended Performance oil given its lower viscosity and better additive package will clean better thus the oil getting darker sooner, hope that helps.

    • @runningrich

I didnt have a regular 5w-30 while filming, this used a 10w30 bottle. My observation is based on mobil1 regular 5w30 and extended performance 5w30.

I spoke with a Nascar technician and he said if your engine does burn oil the Mobile 1 is the best choice to stick with because it leaves the fewest deposits in the combustion chamber. I'm using Mobile 1 extended mileage in my 2015 Toyota Highlander which has a 3.5 L V6. This engine has 160,000 miles on it and hasn't burned any oil luckily. At that's noticeable when checking the oil level.I have changed the oil every 5,000 miles and recently sent an oil sample to Blackstone which will test the quality of your oil. That test came back with the oil still having 86% viscosity and in great condition. I've sent the latest sample of the engine oil now after 6,000 miles and am going to compare results. On another note there's no way to touch oil and see what condition it's in accuratly.. Unless it's turned into sludge then you know your engine is done for. Good video and keep the coming. Thank you!

My 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 5.2 V8 is still going strong for 28 years without engine or transmission overhaul. Right now it is nearly 421,000 miles. Several years ago, I've used conventional oil then blue smoke came out from tail pipe as I didn't like so, I switched to standard 5W-30 Mobil One Synthetic oil (no high mileage or extended) plus, engine restoration solution with Royal Purple oil filter for years without any problem or always passed smog check. Also, I've reduced engine thermostat to 15 degrees (180 instead of 195 degrees) to prolong engine life. I changing oil every 6 months (Spring and Fall since retired is fewer driving) or 5,000 miles but not beyond 7,000 or 8,000 miles. Even 3 years old this is an interesting video. Recently, I'm changing up my oil strategy,
I was just about to buy the 5W-30 Extended Performance oil on Amazon when I came across your video. I'm actually buying the EP for max engine protection which is the goal. I would never go 20,000 miles between oil changes. Anyway, there are a few things to cause you losing a bit of oil. The biggest one you didn't reveal in the video is how many miles is on the engine? From how you describe the use of your vehicle in either case, I think your still ahead of the game. Your engine could be at that point where the oil control rings are just starting to show their age? The fact that your losing a bit in either case points to this.

My 2013 Prius recommends 10,000 mile oil changes. I've only done that once or twice back when the engine was fairly new. The Toyota service advisor even recommends against that. UA-cam videos since then have taught me the 10,000 mile oil changes will safely get your engine past warranty and also yuck up the oil rings leading to oil consumption.
Now is every 5,000 miles. Oil is cheap (I believe Toyota uses synthetic blend), engines are expensive.

While not a scientific test allowing us to say the EP is 'bad' I'm going to share my experience between 0W-30 (other brand) and 5W-30 EP. After changing to EP, right away the engine had some top engine clatter (engine has 35K miles). I didn't remember this clatter with the 0W-30 oil. The only guess is the EP is a much thicker oil, perhaps even thicker than a normal 5W-30 synthetic.

  • @ralomicron

The blackness of the oil is the sludge left from the other oil, and the resin the oil goes down faster is because the sludge is keeping the oil from leaking past the pistin and getting burned off. That is why people use high millage for engines that burn a lot of oil. It builds up sludge and keeps the engine from burning as much.

I have used Mobil 1 EP for several years and I think it is an outstanding motor oil. The Mobil 1 EP stands up as promised and I have had a number of used oil analysis (UOA) samples to prove it. The fact that your car burns oil is a reflection of who made the engine, who is driving the car and how they drive it. I have never burned any oil in any car within the last 25 years (Lexus). The only time I ever burned oil was using original Mobil 1 in 1991 while driving cross country in a heavily laden car doing high speeds on the super highway for several days on end and that was an early 5W30. After that trip the car (Acura Legend) never used oil again. I continue to have full confidence in Mobil 1 EP and use it not only in my car but in my daughter's car as well, a 1999 Honda Civic with 158,000 miles. For a car that burns oil, you might try a High Mileage formula or "German Castrol", as some on BITOG believe it to be more viscous.

Mobil 1 EP is better than the fully synthetic Mobil 1. It doesn't matter what you "perceive" about engine smoothness, or how black the oil becomes. Oil analysis doesn't lie. Mobil 1 EP has better base oil and a better additive package. If you can afford it, use it.

    • @yqwgjsg

I would suspect the EP has better additives and better cleaning properties. Cleaning buildup especially carbon will result in darker oil and this removal may cause higher oil consumption. When I was a kid my dad had a gas station. Most vehicles used 30 weight oil then 30 weight HD came out (High Detergent). People found out about this new high tech oil and wanted my dad to change to it in their vehicle. He would refuse unless they understood what would happen. Sure enough unless they had an almost new car, the rest almost always started using oil.

No one in their right mind would run ANY oil for these ridiculously long intervals, it's marketing nonsense. I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and change my oil every 6000 to 7000 miles, depending on the type of driving I'm doing. That said, you simply cannot judge any oil's performance by how it looks coming out of the engine. Only a proper laboratory analysis (Blackstone) can tell you how the oil has performed.

You should try a 0W-xx fully synthetic motor oil. Most wear occurs at startup, when the oil is cold. A 0W will protect better when motor is cold.

    • @charlespickering8941

That is incorrect. It can be used all year round. 0W allows the oil to flow the fastest and get to where it needs to quicker. 0W oils have another number affixed to it be it a 20, 30 or 40. This is the number you want to be concerned with in regards to when the engine is fully warned up this is what the weight of the oil becomes. I have run and continue to run 0w20, 0w30 and 0w40 weight oils in gasoline and diesel engines.

The ESP is a full PAO ester blend which is a good oil for over 10k miles however if its in a turbo fitted car or booated engine still change it under 10k high heat brakes down the oil makes it acidic which causes problems on long drain intervals. Point is if its good for over 10k great but still change it under 10k because the way people drive and climate, hot weather and cold weather the heat cycles all contribute to oil breakdown. Long drain oils are much better because they are formed from natural gas not crude oil but dont go thinking change it over 20k miles because these are all twsted in controlled laboratories and not in real world applications and or driving styles weather etc. Also amall amounta of blowby cause oil dilution so its better to change it between 5 and 10k anyway to be sure. Point is long drain oils are very good oils, much better than standard blends just dont run them at 20k if you want look after your engine better.

Next time send your oil in to be analyzed by a reputable lab like Blackstone and get a real look at the condition of your oil. I run M1 extended 5w/20 in my Ford F150 with the 302 V8 for 10,000 miles which 6-7K miles is towing a 4500lb trailer. I sent my M1 Ext life oil to be tested (twice) and it was just fine after 10K with almost full viscosity and nothing but normal particulate matter. I could have run to 15K mile with no worries. Was it black, Yes. Did I have to put some oil in my engine to top it off, Yes. This is all normal. If you want to do an accurate analysis of your oil, test it, then get back with your resaults.
