The term "deep house" has come to mean many different things to many different people, being applied to everyone from Disclosure to Fred P. But the roots of the sound can be traced back to the musical innovations of one man: Larry Heard. In this video, we look at the techniques behind some of Heard's most iconic and influential music, explaining how he gave house music a sense of depth.
Narrator: Moxie
Writer: Matt McDermott
Editor: Sophie Misrahi
Dubbing Mixer: Guy Clarke
Keyboardist: Charlotte Gray
I reckon that the 'deep' part of house is the part that makes you feel just slightly sad/nostalgic/longing, but the song still makes you feel good. A strange blending of sadness and euphoria.
Nothing sad/lonely about house
I disagree. It has depth in textures and layering, not necessarily sadness.
Check The Godfathers of Deep House South Africa. They are keeping the sound very much alive
@@danieloliver4558 I think more accurate is the sense of drama.
@@ericricky8460 also Amapiano using Deep House
Alright, I'll tell you all my secret. When it's shit music, you'll see hot babes in the thumbnail, when it's good shit, it'll be just a vinyl.
yep the best DJS all rocked vinyl non of this auto bpm crap. i miss my vinyl and regret selling it all.
@@djsubliminalreeve mimimi stop crying digital age has brought about dozens of good musicians that still know how to mix vinyl
Yep.
@@djsubliminalreeve so do I.
on god
Larry Heard is a Chicago House Music gem...period.
God, I miss the dance floor. I'm 64 now, but still have hope!
For nothing else, start at home!
I still feel many of the original house creators are still not recognized for how truly great and innovative they are. The same is for Kraftwerk, Man Parish, etc. Music is everything
Thank you for doing this for a legend.
I read an article saying that to this day, many house pioneers never got paid royalties for their work and to this day, are still fighting for royalties. 💔
Kraftwerk definitely contributed alot but never created a new music genre
@@koreyp2845 Kraftwerk were music genre.
@@jeshkam They never created a genre
@@koreyp2845 Isn't "The Model' the first ever synth-pop song, with verses, bridges and choruses? And "Numbers" the 1st ever electro tune?
I grew up next to this man, I saw him labor over his passion. His creativity is impeccable. A pioneer and a neighborhood & city icon
In recent years the word deep gets thrown about too loosely
Absolutely.
deep as puddles
Truth. I'm very selective about the House and EDM I listen to because I was raised on the parent musics that Deep House borrowed from. I could hear it off a few chords. It is the harmony of the synth and the drum and mood. The complexity in the arrangement
like a loose woman
Doesn’t get thrown around as much as lo fi -_- now deep house with a little bit of hiss and crackle and a fuck load of reverb is called lo fi house
I still can't get over how amazing the 80's and 90's were in terms of quality electronic music. Those were 100% the decades to be alive. It was a total revolution in music and it opened up the gates to anyone with a passion for music to make it themselves. That Juno 106 bassline with a lush Korg M1 pad and a TR909 beat is enough to take you away to another world. That is the beauty of house. It's stripped back to the very basics, but yet it is so powerful and interesting to listen to.
Deep means dat shit hits you deep in your soul! House is the love of my life!
I feel sad that I’ve been this ignorant of the roots of house. But I’m also super grateful for this info. I fell in love with House music from South Africa in the early 2000s and I’m just so impressed by how far reaching this music has spread
House music was under ground for years . I love how the narrator breaks down the chord progressions 😊.
Bittersweet is the right word! Real Deep House Music always got a slight melancholic edge to it! (But is also hopeful at the same time!)
Yes 🔥
Yes I agree
If it's too light or bright in tone for me it's not deep. It should have some soul, remincing on jazz and blues sonic textures.
Aaron Richter exactly. To me house is not much dance music but spiritual music. Great for night crusing on a freeway.
A B true.. Just as long as it's not gospel tinged which changes everything
Deep house is smooth atmospheric melodic harmonic with a 120-130bpm drum beat. It's the sweetest music in the world
You summed it up. I personally cant get into liquid drum n bass unless it has that background ambience deep house is noted for.
A totally overlooked legend.
Totally overlooked if you are in the EDM and festie scene, but not #4thosethatKNO
Yep. I mean even in Chicago they emphasize Frankie, Farley and the Hot Mix 5 (which is ok) while this dude never gets enough cred
Roomy Lan I agree with you.
Not in my circles, but I'd agree he deserves wider exposure
In the mainstream normal working world,Larry Heard is not a household name.
Yes he is criminally underrated and overlooked.
Thank you Larry Heard. South Africa loves you.

Lol I'm here because I'm looking for new music. Gqom and amapiano are nice but I'm looking for something more soothing 😉

First thing I thought. ,'Thats it??!" Some subjects don't work well in short format. but whatever, I'm about to dig some wax out of my closet!
I was about 16 or 17 years old the first time I head Can You Feel It riding in a car with friends to a dance party and a guy had it playing on a mix tape. That was a side of House Music I never heard before and I almost cried. Literally. To this day, that song evokes something in me I can't explain.
Mark Davenport you ain't lying... Deep house makes you feel a sort of way. This is why I grew up listening to the house group Ten City who is from Chicago also which borrowed heavily from Heard
That feeling you get from that song is actually your "hidden language" responding to the music. We all possess it but some of us never experience having an actual conversation with music. That song actually spoke your hidden language. Have a good night....and House Music All Night Long!
I was about to comment the same thing about mystery of love. To this day I get this overwhelming feeling about it. The same thing about
Can you feel it.
Couldn’t agree more - this track has had a lasting effect on me. Arguably the best house track ever
Real deep house take me somewhere else, make the hairs on my arm stand up and give me a euphoric feeling like I'm having a spiritual moment.
Rico Crockett couldn't have said it better myself!
Holy fuck this is exactly how it feels!
Right on point! We share the same vibes!
Check out jarenet B1 Zenith Best track I've heard
Couldn’t agree with you more!
Thank you GTA for putting me on to house music when nobody did
wow just now realized Kanye sampled mystery of love damn

What song?
Ben2k109 Fade
@@Ben2k109 > It was in Fade. It also sampled "Deep Inside" by Hardrive and "I Get Lifted" by Barbara Tucker. Those 2 from NYC, not Chi.
Jerry I its called sampling its legal and ethical your deep house homeboy is getting a cut from kanye - smartass
Wow. It's refreshing to uncover the originator of "Deep House". I really enjoy that type of sound.
Seeing the keys being played is a phenomenal insight. Thank you!
Mystery of Love is insane to have as a first house track!!!! Like holy shit, that song is incredible, not really a fan of how they downplay it in this video.
I became a huge fan of Chicago not because of MJ, it’s because of House Music. It is an amazing city where my favorite music genre was born. I wish I can visit the city someday and take a history tour. hahah
I thought the Jackson family were from Indiana
I love seeing footage of people clubbing back in the 80’s, they seem to be having much more fun than when I see people in clubs these days
Can confirm. It was more fun in the '80s and '90s because (1) we didn't have phones, and (2) we weren't all facing the DJ -- in fact most people weren't paying attention to the DJ at all. People went to dance clubs to dance.
Must have been much less people with burned out dopamine receptors from molly abuse
Nowadays people model their happiness based on how the world sees them i,e, their social media identity. Back then in the 80’s people did not had that concept, once you were in the party that was all that mattered really, there was no notion of telling the world were you where and what you were up to, hence, giving out human brains more headroom to actually enjoy the present moment. Nowadays sadly is not the same, people are not only wary of how they must “portray to the world” they are also constantly living in fear of the big brother eye, scared of being filmed and mad fun of online etc... the digital age is kinda goodish but not entirely perfect...
@@synthiamodulatta9720 Brilliant considerations. Sad but true
You don’t need to base your happiness around the people around you in a club, if you think phones and drugs ruined the club scene, stop engaging with them and be happy in your own self
Another brilliant documentary. Dance music finally getting the broadcast journalism it deserves. Big up.

God Bless Larry Heard !
I wore out every Mr. Fingers cassette I owned. Soundtrack to my life in the 90's. Thank you, Mr. Heard!

hahahaahhahaha
I’ve read that Heard was influenced by jazz and gospel, but no references to classical music influences.
No doubt all contemporary, commercial music is the result of cross-cultural collaboration, but Why this imaginary connection between house/techno and white European classical music?
The idea that Black music is legitimate art ONLY as it is compared to the European ‘Masters’ is a very subtle form of racism.
It is IMPORTANT to understand that House, Techno, Disco, Funk, Soul, Rock, Blues, Jazz and yes even Country are rooted in the music of Black and Afro-Cuban cultures. Otherwise, you do not understand the music, and are only ‘whiteplaining’ - NOT educating - and are deepening the injustices done to those who never received due credit, nor compensation for their music.

Glad I'm from Chicago and glad that we made "House Music". Salute to the MASTER

Yes indeed! Burial and the narrator's voice brought me here, but the wisdom made me subscribe.
Agreed! So much more you all could do. Marshall Jefferson, Frankie, Joe Smooth, Jesse Saunders, Chip. The list goes on 🎼
Gotta love you guys' work of recalling and telling people the history of electronic music. Can't get tired of watching these videos!
I remember the first time I heard (no pun intended) Larry's "Mr. Fingers - Can U feel It" on my walkman when vacationing in Virginia Beach VA in the late 80's...the local FM radio station DJ was spinning an awesome set of great house music...needless to say 30 yrs later I'm still hooked on that sound :0) Thank you Larry and all the other early house pioneers!
Every single time I hear 'A Path' or 'Never Be So Lonely' or 'The Sun Can't Compare' or 'Winterflower', I'm instantly transported me to the very place and time I first heard them. Thanks for the memories Larry.
thanks for sharing this. much respect to the RA crew and of course Larry!
Thank you so much. House music takes me across the gamut of emotions in lush, sweeping style with just one track.
Long live house music. Thank you Mr. Heard.
It annoys me when someone labels a song deep house when it really isn't. I hope it opens up the discussion amongst artists and fans to perserve the essence of deep house.
Or people can just make music and stop trying to box it....
😅😅😅
Who cares man just enjoy the music ffs
Cool music history lesson...really like this kind of content. Ty Larry Heard!
Geezuz Mystery Of Love still touches the soul. That bass line....so deep.
Paul Hardcastle is arguably the father of what we think of as house music. I can bet you money he was a huge influence on all the guys outta Chicago back then.

This channel is way too good to only have ~200k subscribers, this is UA-cam at its best, TV tier documentary on topics that otherwise wouldn't make it on there while still retaining a somewhat amateur (in a good way) editing style
Wonderful channel
Love the shots of the hands playing the piano. Really give a good visual for understanding the complexity of house.
An amazing little piece of house music history. I'm always v impressed with RA's writing, good to see the videos are just as good :)
Larry heard is the man much respect to the master of house music.
I love deep and soulful house 😊
This makes me appreciate even more the set I saw him play this September in Lisbon...just amazing!
My era. Blessed to have been part of it.

Larry is the G.O.A.T
DCook ,yeah maybe in Chicago but we was mixing like that in the east back in the 70s . Yall was late.
I was referring to strictly his production and the genre defining "Can You Feel It". I'm well schooled & studied in DJ culture and the roots. Yes mixing and party culture has firm FIRM roots in the NYC underground. Mancuso & Loft, The Garage and Leven etc etc.... but for production and "deep house" as a genre...Mr. Heard is GOAT in my book.

Altered states on the dance floor.... after hearing Mystery of Love at the world famous Zanzibar Club in Jersey. That was the first time a track hypnotized me to sway and roll within the currents of the rhythm.... I haven't stopped dancing yet.... Thank you Larry....
As a drum and bass guy It is interesting to learn about DJs that are famous from other genres
In the early 90s breakbeats and house shared the same dance floors, so I see them as pretty close relatives :) ua-cam.com/video/Gwfs96sfNrI/v-deo.html
I was a DnB and Hip hop DJ from '97 to '05 playing FL to VA to NYC. All of our "crew" were House DJ's except myself. I learned to mix hip hop and house first. Occasionally I would play a House set and they were among the best I ever had. great times.

Amazing... I can even begin to describe the thermal rift this you tube put me on. I love this. Incredibly educational. I LOVE IT! I remember the first time I heard real techno back with the Orb etc...I had no idea how back it went. LOVE IT Thank you so much for this.
Man the first time i heard Deep House it blew my mind now im a hardcore deep house lover but the sad thing is i walk around the street with my headphones on my minidisc and tape walkman by my side and people ask what the hell is that what are you listening to? and i say Deep house and they say they have never heard of it. why has no one heard of deep house in Melbourne Australia? This is the most Amazing genre of music and ill die listening to it!. Deep4Life

Thank you for this documentary. Love house. It has enriched my life so much.
only realised recently that What About This Love was released in 1989! so ahead of its time

Larry Heard wasn't ahead in his time, he was in his time! I was 16 in 1989 and house, deep house or more generally techno weren't for just happy fews. On radios and dancefloors you could listen to it, not only in USA, I'm french and this is my teenage music! The fact is that, nowadays, few house music makers are really in their time or ahead in it, most of popular ones only recycle without any creativity. Luckily we can still hear very good house music but not in mainstrem medias like the 80's and 90's. For my generation it was a kind of golden age! But I still looking for good sounds and there is a lot, I just have to go to it because it doesn't go to me easily! Actually it's a more exciting quest...like a treasure hunt!!! Sorry for my broken english. Have a nice day!
Can you do a longer documentary on this? Really interesting stuff and such a shame for it to be cut short to just 8 mins...
Beautiful to see all this education preserving the history of House music.
To the great man of Atmospheric sounds and him and his music do not date! and they go beyond generations to come, that's how deep the man is of his musical influence and knowledge and power and will remain a true innovative of great vibes and yet, still going strong to this day, and Ambassador of his musical craft and outstanding wizardry and ture chemist and pioneer in the making of good quality music of highest standard of the man for all to enjoy. Bless the man.
"PURE GENIUS"

This doesn't even scratch the surface. Chicago Larry Heard music goes much deeper than a 10 min video. You just had to of been alive and living in Chicago 1984-1996 to get the core of what Larry and a few others were doing at that time. Everyone is all Frankie and Ronnie, but things would not be the same w/out Larry Heard.
Thanks! I will now post under every second Video on youTube that "there is more to it" and that you "just had to be there". Its so helpful.
I agree....
"had to of been", what does that even mean?
@@TvangsProd2 using colloquial speech in writing does look odd
M Riley I agree, but everyone SHOULD have been all Frankie and Ronnie.....especially Ronnie. Larry Heard brought the musicianship. No doubt about it. However, Ronnie = “Deep House”. Ron Trent said it perfectly.
As an infrequent casual listener, I always assumed 'deep' was a discriptor of tone and sound. Not a reference to substance or being profound. Today I Learned. Thank you.

Great video! Although I produce Trance music most of the time, sometimes I make a House track. Just because it's freaking awesome music to produce! Keep up the good work with these kind of video's. Greets, Emiel and hi from the Netherlands :)
I remember buying "Introduction" by Mr. Fingers off of someone's neglect to buy it two weeks before I did in a record store in Hazelwood, Mo. in the early 90's!!

I met Larry over 30 years. I loved his sound.
Thank you for creating this video... Letting the new generation know that our music has a history behind it and shedding some light on it's pioneers is something this community needs... ONE LOVE!
he didn't "hand-play" the bassline on "Can you feel it" he used the arpeggiator on the Juno-6 triggered off of his drum machine.
get that person who did the hands-on-Juno B-roll to write the copy on this stuff.
Poorly researched article in many ways I think the narrator was winging it for the most part.
Great Video Documentaries RA!! keep them coming!!!
My interest in music started in the mid-80's. This is pure nostalgia. ❤️
props for love to mr fingers, but...
1. narration is only half-correct--"move your body" actually does NOT have the same chords as "wild thing." although it's the same root notes, the chords in "move your body" are *minor*, giving it a more distinct sound than the major chords of "wild thing." also a more likely influence would have been ray charles or aretha franklin rather than the troggs.
2. given that heard's band was playing jazz (mahavishnu orchestra/frank zappa weren't prog-rock, they were jazz-rock music.) it was more likely that he was turned onto modal tonality (one of the techniques debussy & satie are most famous for) via miles davis' classic "kind of blue" (btw, mahavishnu's leader used to be a davis sideman.)
Quoting 3:15 "it's an anthem in large part because it utilises a 1 4 5 chord progression which had already been used in countless hits before, such as the the trogg's wild thing."
T Bird Its just white people trying to find some kind of white influence in house music. They think they're slick
exactly. the namechecking of Debussy and Satie is cringeworthy 'I have an eclectic musical collection' stuff
MrSivram, white people have influenced house music. Look up Girogio Moroders late 70's productions, basically Chicago house before Chicago house was a thing, made by a white Italian man.
baboon2525 Well, they clearly DON’T have an eclectic music collection or else they’d know how to properly pronounce “Satie” and “Gymnopédie”!
A monument should be erected in Larry Heard's honour. He's a musical God, on a higher plane.
Damn... I have been listening to this sound for years, and never knew it was pioneered by just one guy. This man is a titan! I need to buy some albums
i always love explaining deep house to people then realize it's no use, i always end it with, "you just have to feel it to know"
a lot of drummers turn out to be very talented musicians, one of the most beautiful songs for me is "Heather" by Billy Cobham, who was also a drummer
i say musicians i meant more the melodies and compositions they come up with, that aren't solely the percussion and rythm, not that a drummer doesn't count as a musician
This guy looks like he could be Kaytranada's dad! Bless his groovy soul!
I really admire and geek for a guy like Larry Heard, thanks for posting this video!
Amazing and talented to the point his music can make you laugh, cry, and be in another state of being...
