- Living in different countries means that you're exposed to a different culture and a different way of life. Once adjusted to, It can be hard to return back home and go back to your old way of life, habits, and culture. This has been my experience since arriving back in the United States after living in France for 7 months. Enjoy!

I can’t imagine how good he must feel to see that in his comment section
Same. I do not have any lil brother. Wish i could adopt Max
Crayslay totally agree
The fact that you brought up Yes Theory and Seek Discomfort was awesome. Love to see the message positively effecting people in everyday life.
Of course! Me too 😇
Yes Fam 👌🏻❤️
the fact that he really sets up the camera, rides/walks past it purely for the video, then has to walk all the way back to pick up the camera lmao
Its some real casey neistat shit right there.
Literally what I was thinking😂😂
I noticed that, as well. Very professional.
Les Stroud does the same thing in Survivorman, but he walks almost all the way to the horizon, first. Crazy.
i knowww, i ws thinking that

I will agree I lived in Germany for 3 years came back to the US and I was like WTF.
can you say what exactly shocked u when u came back to the US? I'm German (Berlin) and I'd like to know :)
I agree I was living in Berlin for 7 months and when I came back to South Florida I was in reverse culture shock too. I never realized how loud Americans are until you’ve gotten used to German restaurant etiquette and then go to a restaurant in America😂. But I relate a lot to this video. While I was there I had to take a German integration course for my residence permit and started forgetting things in English! Now my brain is a mixture of both lol. Wouldn’t trade that experience for anything though as most Americans never leave the country let alone move out of it.
I only had to spend a month in Frankfurt over the summer and when I got back to the US I started noticing all the things that only Americans do.
well it’d be like that anywhere
I am going to live in German too
the reverse car and appearing again normal speed with your bike sequence was kinda genius
Oh my god, i relate to everything you said; feeling like it never happened, seeking discomfort when you don’t know the language and culture, growing as a person because of everything you lived (a lot of awkward moments because of language barrier) but when you come back home it feels like you become your old self before traveling. Sometimes i feel like people can’t understand my perspective after living so many different things so when i come back in France i feel mentally isolated. I lived the exact same thing as you, in longer and reverse;). Your videos are amazing, keep up with the good work.
Yes!! You said that so well
Tu étais partie longtemps ?
I’m just gonna say it... you are one of my most favorite UA-camrs
Vous êtes français ? Parce que on ne dit pas my most favorite on dit my favourite(ou favourite in British English).
And don't worry I love when people correct my english (nicely of course) it helps me a lot to increase my english skills 🙏

Omg I feel you in a lot of points you made! I lived in England for 2 months (I'm from France) and like one week after coming back and starting my french routine again it felt like England never happened and like it was all a dream... And even a dream you almost don't remember when you wake up. So weird & quite sad tbh
camille seguineau how did u find England??? I live in the uk and I wanna know an outsiders point of view
Same! I lived in England for a little over a year (I'm from South Africa) and now that I am back it feels like it did not even happen, I remember all the things that happened and still remember my experiences, however, when I look back at things from England or when I talk to my friends from school who are still living there, it does not seem like I am the one who lived through those experiences and it all seems so distant.
Okay Max listen. I am a 25 yo French dude that is following Yes Theory, Casey Neistat and Dan Mace for more than three years.
I watched most of your videos and I can tell that you are talented. Your editing is neat, almost perfect while you’re still very young.
Continue to be raw, and stay determined. You’ll reach top of the mountain pretty soon.
Keep going 👌🏻
As a french student living in France, i'd say the rush feeling is also something we experience here all the time. I never had a 3hrs lunch break in my whole life. Always had an official 1hr break, but the time to get past all the steps before finally sitting down and enjoying your meal makes it that you're left with not even 40min in front of you... Same goes with the rush of the classes. Always had a very busy schedule from middle school to this day.
They barely have 30min to eat in the USA so don't complain, we have plenty of time for lunch in France, we are way better off than the Americans
@@imagurlduh am i complaining though? Just empathising
@@eusanagalilee360 Yes you are complaining about your schedule that is a joke compared to the American ones. They have no time to eat and you whine because you never had a 3-hour break in your life. France has one of the best lunch time and you shouldn't complain cause you are fucking lucky to live here
@@imagurlduh be it as it may i really resonated with his story, even though i live in france and had a different highschool experience. Nice of you for trying to shame me for voicing my opinion. People struggle differently you should probably keep that in mind before coming at people's throat.
I grew up in 5 different countries (Gambia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, the US and Mozambique) even though I’m half American I’ve only lived here for 3 years. It’s like triple culture shock, I feel the struggle.
Like...how many languages do you speak?
Living in Mozambique ..
That is a pretty hard cultureshock.
I feel like as an American who has lived in Europe, the only thing I ever missed was air conditioning and space. Anything that truly matters in life like: food, safety, water quality, civility, healthcare, theater, the arts etc., the Europeans do better; but you have to be willing to live a more minimalistic life. Its definitely worth it!
Cam you elaborate on that, I'm a New Yorker and I'm curious
Wdym by "space"
@@remigmr4639 By space, I mean physical space/room. Homes and apartments are normally larger, and we aren't over populated due to the geographic size of the country.
@@CMCSS-to3to I meant that I only miss material items/physical luxuries from the US (water pressure, air conditioning, and personal space) The Europeans have a much more humanistic, realistic, and civilized way of life.

When I came back from Aix last year my mental health was at an all time low, lots of anxiety because I kept questioning why Americans live the way we do and I felt like I wasn't doing enough/moving fast enough here anymore. Also I feel like with social media it puts this added pressure to post about how amazing/lucky you are to live in France but it is not always like that that is for sure

Hey Max, once I graduated high school and went to college I started to realize just how restrictive high school life really is. Agreeing with what you said, traditional American schools give off a sense of urgency and create rush and immense amounts of anxiety that at times can be too much to handle. This really is so strange, because now being in college, it is almost the opposite. I certainly was under the impression that college life was more intense, stressful, and demanding than a high school student could imagine, but I have yet to experience these. Although college may be more difficult than high school, the true freedom that is given outweighs such difficulty. You are actually given time to reflect from the past, present, and into the future, unlike high school, allowing you to plan out your time more efficiently.
Just wanted to mention this because it seems like secondary education in France is more similar to higher education here in the states.
Anyways, I have enjoyed watching your videos; the increase in subs is well deserved. :)
This comment makes me so happy and excited to start college life. I'm a senior in high school right now and everything seems to be crammed into a week's curriculum. Then comes the anxiety of quizzes and tests.
Hi Max its great to see your channel going so well, hope you continue to use that great talent you have to continue making more videos. Travelling is good for character and the soul.

I just discovered your page (through recommended) and I really enjoy the videos you’ve made documenting your life in another country. It reminded me of when I lived in the Caribbean for a year (very different to europe, but the idea of leaving home at a young age is relatable). Keep up the good work! Subscribed!
Kevin Alejandro same
Well i lived in the US for three years and i kinda feel the same way. To be honest I never really felt home in the US but when I moved again to Algeria (which isn’t France (home) but french speaking) I felt the need to speak English and my biggest fear was to forget how to speak English after how much I struggled to learn. So I decided to move again, on my own, to Dublin. Now I get to speak English and also to the French high school of Ireland. Basically the best of both worlds 😊
You sound so genuine. That's cool.
you're such a genuine person. like everything you say, the gratitude and kindness you show others is so real and believable. i love your videos, your channel is amazing!!!

I just started watching you like 30 minutes ago and I’m early to a video, I’m the shook 🤯
ugh yes someone finally put this feeling in words...
37K and counting! Incredible but understandable, too. Love your videos, Max. And this reverse culture shock video is really awesome because it capsulizes the chief difference. . . mainly being out of your comfort zone in Aix but now, back in the USA, relief and a sense of how easy it is to function. You are more on automatic pilot here. There your senses were nearly always on full-scale alert, always figuring stuff out. So, your perceptions about coming back home being so easy play off against what was really great about Aix.
One of my favourite UA-camr love you style of videos and your editing and the amount of time and effort :) congratulations on the new subs
I went to France last year and I think the only thing I missed about the states was the informal culture or being able to walk into stores or speak to people without the constant formalities the way they do in France. That and the constant pressure to always dress fashionably even if you're just going to the store. American casualness is something I always preferred over French formality.... other than that, the overall quality of life in Europe I feel is much better than in the US.
so happy you watch yes theory! he motivates me to be the best version of me and helps me conquer my fears/uncertainties!
This is such a wise video, im happy to here about your experience and how you've grown as a person because i can totally relate. I'm 19 and haven't really been home to sweden for about 4 years unless for a very quick visit but even those times it's been so strange, like nothing changed its trippy. I moved to Brazil when I was 13 and lived there for 5 years and I relate so much to the part where you talked about being comfortable again in your home country and being nervous when you're speaking in a language that you're not fluent in and hoping people understand you. It's nice to know I'm not the only one lol

Thank you! Finally someone talked about it, I lived in London for a while and when I came back home in France, it felt more weird than comforting, the culture difference was kind of shocking
I agree 100%
I lived in France for 7 months during the same time period as you! In Paris, but still, coincidence hehe. I can totally relate to everything you say in this video!
U in america rn then?
Great video! I felt similar after returning from Australia
dude I feel you on so many levels my family moved every 2 or 3 years with my dad being in the military and I relate so much to everything you said
I relate to this video so much after studying in France for three months. The education system here is so much more stressful than there, it’s an incredible difference that really takes a toll on your mental health! That’s why I’ve been trying to be so much more lax with myself and I’ve been letting myself take time to spend with friends so I can have *me* time! The difference with France and America is the concept of time. Try looking up “strict time cultures” versus “flexible time cultures,” what you’re describing about time is very much a real thing!
Wow, your quite correct on how you need to seek discomfort to grow. I have a long story about it in poland 🇵🇱
Your desire to grow as a person and get outside of your comfort zone is beautiful. The world needs more people like you! Don't let anyone tell you it's "lame" or whatever. They're just apathetic losers who aren't willing to grow as people. You're doing great!💞
It's crazy how well i undestood all the things you said even if i'm french ! You speak very clearly
this kid is 16 & i'm 19 yet he speaks with so much maturity that i'm actually mind blown by it cus i CAN NEVER
I love all the different cinimatics in all of your different videos!
honestly, hearing you talk about seeking discomfort makes me want to try and do the same
This is very cool, the mixed between two cultures, I'm from Brazil and I would like to go study in US, probably I will in 2023
"It feels like I never went to France at all." Wasn't in Germany for nearly as long as you were in France (just a month for me) but I agree! Yes, discomfort is a thing, even if one loves travel and exploration. Ditto on forcing yourself to put yourself out there more, always an honorable goal.
Also yeahhh, our class schedules don't encourage time for thinking, it's all about rushing. Contrary to what we say education should achieve. Any Americans agree?
Anyways, this subscriber growth is amazing! Max, you are amazing! I literally described your channel to some classmates at my new school a town over and one immediately said "I'VE SEEN THAT GUY'S VIDEOS!" :D that said, you and your success are more important than any video, so no shame in dedicating parts of your junior year to yourself. Everyone will happily but patiently await your return.
With that I digress, this was a great video and continues to grow my passion for the French language and culture. :)
This guy has more sense, maturity and intelligence than most of youtubers combined 😂
I love the area you live in! I would love to bike around like you do, but you know living in the country limits that haha
i feel the exact same way about the school days here in the US. everything feels so rushed, it’s like all i do in my day is study, sports, and homework. i end up staying up late and missing sleep to do something fun so it’s not like my days are just school and sleep and it really messes you up
I lived in Belgium for five years and moving back to America was fricking insane. I prefer the life I lived over there tbh but I still love my country
