I was a surf lifesaver in Australia and this is pretty much how we would rescue someone with a board, its worth noting though that most people who actually need help will either be panicking or about to panic and exhausted, in reality it wont be graceful, you will probably have to manhandle them into place, and they will get a few bruises rolling over, but it’s better than the alternative

There was a lake that i used to fish, its a bigger body of water that had restrictions for no motorized boats. Was known for sail boats paddle boards and kayaks. I was in my sit on top kayak and saw a little girl (maybe 12) fall off their board in the middle of the lake (very windy day, water had a small chop). I didn't think anything of it while I was fishing but after a few spots of not catching fish I was looking to go across the lake and saw she was still in the water and not on their board so set out in there direction to see of everything was okay. She hanging on the side was tired and holding on to rhe board and crying when i got there. She just said she needed help and could get back on her board and she grabbed onto my kayak. Oldtown 120pdl. We tipped my kayak and dropped a bunch of my stuff into the water while i was helping her into the back of the kayak. She wasn't teather or had a life jacket. I asked her where she came from and she pointed at the beach. That's where I took her, towing her board behind my kayak. Her family was not happy to see me and thought I did her wrong or something when we got close to the beach area. With everyone talking over each other yelling at me i didnt not want to stay there. All they saw was their little girl crying and with a stranger. When I could I jumped out of my kayak as it was a shallow beach and she did to and ran to her family. A few of them where scream and yelling at me like I did something wrong. I unleashed the board and pushed it in their direction. By the time she explained what happened, I was already getting as far away as possible. I went straight to where I launched and left.

As a lifeguard that taught boating, umm this usually works, however it's not a guarantee, and don't grab but the arms, your weight can pull them out of socket and severely hurt them, as they said use the PFD straps
Fully agree! PFD straps are great to use but often, people aren't wearing a vest PFD or it is not properly fit. If it's an emergency and you feel confident and comfortable with the situation it's better for an arm to get pulled out of a socket than drown.
@@PaddleAdventurer that's true, sometimes people just don't wear there lifejacket properly or otherwise. So probably should say, always try to use the lifejacket but if you can't proceed to use the arms, just be careful. It's definitely better to pop your arm out than drowning.
A paddle float would certainly help. Or they could use the two paddles to create a bridge between the two paddleboards and use that as support to climb back on.
Thanks for watching and for your comment. Interesting thought with the paddle float. A flip rescue would be much faster when you have someone capable of performing a rescue. Plus, keep in mind that a flip rescue is used in emergencies or situations when the person is exhausted, is injured, has a cramp etc. I'd be interested to try a self-rescue with a paddle float and a paddle board. I've only used a paddle float for kayak entry - ua-cam.com/video/VDVq_RhEyjo/v-deo.htmlsi=VGFmxiVTWxpJV7lP If assistance is required I think a strap/rope stirrup or pull is a much faster and more efficient way to get back on a paddle board. I like the idea of creating a bridge between two paddle boards with a paddle or paddles but this wouldn't work in an emergency (person is injured, passed out, exhausted etc) and would also get tricky in wavy conditions.
I’m a lifeguard at a lake and we do this! Except you only flip the board when it’s a passive victim. We only use the board for the front half of the lake otherwise we use the normal red rescue tubes you see
Yeah you learn this in water front life guard training and I loved being saved but I got really really bad basically a rope or carpet burn form being flipped Over it so many times lol
@@PaddleAdventurer not only that, it's a diagnostic question. If they say no? They don't need help leave them alone. If they say yes, they're conscious and probably not extremely tired. If they don't respond you know they need immediate help. This is why when you see someone who may need medical attention you say "my name is X, I am a first responder trained to do Y, are you in need of any assistance today?" You NEVER assume and just start grabbing people. And no one is saying you are doing nothing while you ask them if they need help. You're maneuvering towards them, stowing your paddle, all the shit that must be done anyway
I fell off my paddleboard the other day... i was so embarassed (I was along a river with a bunch of houses). I kept laughing so hard to cover up the fact that the life jacket made it soooo hard to get back up
Never be embarrassed! Falling off is bound to happen. That's why it's good to practice getting back on your board. Personally I love goofing around and falling off in safe conditions. ua-cam.com/users/shortsgcDUveJny6k?si=mMw34hW3Svm7JpPY
My brother fell off a paddle board while we were camping and i was the only other one on a paddle board near him so i put all my body weight (around probably 98 - 100 pounds at the time) on one side of the board so he could get back on, both my brother and i are scared of deep waters and drowning
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by double flip. If they have a board and aren’t unconscious it’s much safer and easier to get them back on their own board.
Never perform the flip rescue if you aren’t comfortable, capable or in a safe situation. Here are three ways to get back on your board ua-cam.com/video/KLzWnols0GA/v-deo.htmlsi=F-kfZzhaNAw7eB6E
Flip rescues are used in emergencies or situations where the person has a cramp, is exhausted, conditions have changed etc. I have an instructional video on how to get back on your paddle board too.
Once I went on a school trip and went surfing there as a class, but then the worst think possible happened…I got stuck under my surfboard…😅 I couldn’t breathe but luckily got up in 10 seconds
This is genius and i wish i knew this when i went to a beach summer camp for 4 summers and had a bunch of friends who couldnt get back on their board after falling off lol

@PaddleAdventurer lol i appreciate the link but i was in that summer camp 10 years ago. But if i ever paddle board with someone else i will let them know
Hopefully not but personally I’d rather have a dislocated arm from being rescued than dead. I’d suggest using the PFD straps vs your arms if you have an injury.
I'd love paddle boarding more if I weighed more 😂 it's fun until the wind picks up not in the direction I'm going. Otherwise I just stand there for the ride 😂
Yeah! It's lots of fun! All about planning your paddle for weather and wind conditions. Paddle into the wind first and then take the free ride back! 🙌🏼
Yeah we tried to do that until the wind changed. So I laid down, held onto my mates board and he eventually got us back. I sat and paddled when it wasn't too crazy. We weren't expecting the wind to change so quickly. But before I won the race we had purely thanks to the wind 🤣🤣

I image you jumping off your board to help them back on. Then you can’t get back. So they jump off to help you get back on. Then you have to jump off to help them get back on. Then they have to jump off to help you back on 3 day later….. You both are holding onto one board kicking your feet to get back home
😆 I wouldn't recommend attempting a rescue if you aren't confident or comfortable getting back on your own board. Or yes, you might end up in a bad situation or like you said kicking your way back to shore.
Oh no! I’ve never found that. Of course if it’s an emergency it’s likely to be a lot sloppier. Despite getting bruises I’m glad you learned this technique. It might safe a life one day! 🙏🏽

Tbf your legs can get cramped due to the water temperature, in case of an emergency it’s just something nice to know… plus not everyone is responsible enough to make good decisions based on logic lmao
@@Babygrayce315 omg true I didn’t even think of that. I always assume cramps cuz it has happened to my mum once, she swam a bit too far and the water was so cold her legs got cramped so she kinda had to hope and try to move slowly so she could float back to the coast.
Paddleboarders have a habit of not wearing wetsuits on water that'll give them cold shock if they fall in. It can be very hard, if not impossible, to use your muscles in a state of cold shock. Plus of course, people make mistakes and one of your party may be extremely tired.
It’s important to learn and practice getting on your own board. I have some videos on this too. Flip rescues are used in emergencies or situations where the person is exhausted, has a cramp etc. If you aren’t comfortable or confident helping rescue them it’s best to call for help.

I was in Plymouth last month and me and my friends were on the paddle board and it tipped over and we went into water that felt like -1 degrees and it’s 4 of us out there it was so cold and scary
@@PaddleAdventurer Performing the rescue seems straightforward. It's the getting back up onto the paddleboard that's tricky. It was edited out. Not being able to get back up onto the paddleboard isn't an emergency, tho. Who would one be advised to call in such a scenario(?) Thx in advance -
Even if the flip rescue is simple enough you shouldn't attempt it if you aren't able to get back on your own board or it's a situation that puts you in danger. @@PaddleAdventurer that's true, sometimes people just don't wear there lifejacket properly or otherwise. So probably should say, always try to use the lifejacket but if you can't proceed to use the arms, just be careful. It's definitely better to pop your arm out than drowning.
Yes exactly 👏🏼 Happy and safe adventuring!
Very useful! Thanks

I love that you get someone back on their board by getting on their board
😆 Oh yeah! Resourceful
Thank-you.

I've only used a paddle float for kayak entry - ua-cam.com/video/VDVq_RhEyjo/v-deo.htmlsi=VGFmxiVTWxpJV7lP
If assistance is required I think a strap/rope stirrup or pull is a much faster and more efficient way to get back on a paddle board.
I like the idea of creating a bridge between two paddle boards with a paddle or paddles but this wouldn't work in an emergency (person is injured, passed out, exhausted etc) and would also get tricky in wavy conditions.
I've never even touched a paddle board before but I watched this 3 times 😅😅
lol I'm glad it was engaging!
So cool I ❤ pattle boarding
Thanks for the kind comment!
I'm 11 and have never flipped off a paddleboard before. One time I was in really choppy water and almost fell off but I really good balance so didn't

I’m a lifeguard at a lake and we do this! Except you only flip the board when it’s a passive victim. We only use the board for the front half of the lake otherwise we use the normal red rescue tubes you see
Thanks for watching and commenting! The flip rescue is such a great technique to know.

Thanks for the nice comment! I’m glad the video was helpful 🙌🏼
HA! As if I could lift myself up on their board in the first place 😂 we're both fish food now
😆🐟 I’m sure you could do it!
Yeah you learn this in water front life guard training and I loved being saved but I got really really bad basically a rope or carpet burn form being flipped
Over it so many times lol
It is a useful and technique 🙌🏼 Oh no! You must have been flipped a lot; which brings up a great tip, wear a long sleeve rashie when practising this.
I learned this in a Jr. Lifeguard camp I did.
Awesome! Great skill to know.
I have never been on a paddle board before but this is good information to know
Thanks for the comment. Maybe it will be helpful for you one day!
This video is too hilarious. 😅😂😂
🤔 Not sure what’s funny but I’m glad you got a laugh. Could help save a life one day too!
As an introvert I’d just cheer for them
I’ve never paddle boarded in my life but plan on hosting a fitness class in the near future
A paddle boarding fitness class? You totally need to get out paddle boarding; its a lot of fun and great core and balance work!
"Ask if they are okay ? " 😂😂😂 Yeah first asking then helping 😂😂
lol not everyone in the water needs help. They might be swimming or playing or able to get back on their board without your help.
@@lilconch Exactly! Great explanation 👏🏼
Great job helping your brother out! 🙌🏼 always important to practice getting back on a paddle board and wearing a pfd.
I don’t think I’d be as graceful 😂 I’d be panicking
😆 definitely not graceful in a real life situation!
@@PaddleAdventurer right we both going under 😂
@@naturallybecoming831 lol definitely the result if you don't practise in calm situations!
Does this work with my dog😅
Lol I haven't tried it with a pup but likely not.
If your in a really dire situation it’s best to do a double flip instead of getting off and flipping to then do the rescue.
I’m not sure I understand what you mean by double flip. If they have a board and aren’t unconscious it’s much safer and easier to get them back on their own board.
Great but how do you get back on your board?

So you do this helping back and forth?
Flip rescues are used in emergencies or situations where the person has a cramp, is exhausted, conditions have changed etc.
I have an instructional video on how to get back on your paddle board too.
i learned this in jr guards! pretty simple
Totally! Great and easy technique to know. Plus fun to practice.
Surf lifesaving right there for Australians
You got that right! Great technique to use to help someone.
Once I went on a school trip and went surfing there as a class, but then the worst think possible happened…I got stuck under my surfboard…😅 I couldn’t breathe but luckily got up in 10 seconds
Oh no! That's scary stuff. Glad you're ok!
This is genius and i wish i knew this when i went to a beach summer camp for 4 summers and had a bunch of friends who couldnt get back on their board after falling off lol

@@brittanypanda3322 Ah right on. I went to summer camp a long time ago. Miss it!
Not me being too light to pull someone down 💀
lol its actually really easy and effective even if the weight ratio is different. You just need to use your body weight and momentum.
Torn my arms off but im on the board! Yayyayyy
Hopefully not but personally I’d rather have a dislocated arm from being rescued than dead. I’d suggest using the PFD straps vs your arms if you have an injury.
I used this to save my friend from drowning❤ Halloween is coming near we’re going to haunt or treat someone lol
Well done! 👏🏼 And I hope you have a fun Halloween paddle 👻🎃
As a lifeguard, when working waterfront we basically do the same thing for further distances and unconscious victims, same for deeper waters.
Absolutely! It's an easy and effective way to help someone.
@@TheDaechan Tricky! I use Windy and Windfinder app to help plan my paddles. Glad it all worked out and you were with a mate!
I don't paddle board. But now I know how to save someone on a paddle board

I can get back on a board after you know I fall off, but it is not gonna look good, I look like a seal that's trying to get on a greased up rock

The flip rescue is very useful for emergency situations and is fun to practice 🙌🏼
Tbf your legs can get cramped due to the water temperature, in case of an emergency it’s just something nice to know… plus not everyone is responsible enough to make good decisions based on logic lmao
They could be injured and that’s why they can’t get back on
@@Babygrayce315 omg true I didn’t even think of that.
Can't they just get back on the board like the other person did? Or is it like for emergencies?
Yeah; used mostly for emergencies or situations where the person is exhausted, injured, conditions have changed etc.

If the rescuer is smaller than the person needing help you can use momentum and stand on the rails to help.
