I see a lot of comments saying the dealership got over on you.... I don't see it that way. They did a great job documenting work and issues that arose. They stated repairs and your authorization to do so. That's just the name of the game. If you want to complain about the price either do it yourself or avoid the dealership and go to an independent shop. Most times they are cheaper. Not crazy cheaper, but cheaper none the less. I'm not mad at the dealership on this one. It seems to me like they didn't try and do anything that was unnecessary. At least she's fixed and you know it'll be solid for a future owner.
Time is money, you made a quick profit instead of spending countless hours doing those repairs. 100% right move letting the dealer bang out the repairs and selling it fast.
Damn they got you ,but they did have to do a little more than expected, and it seems like they checked a lot of stuff in the process , I'm sure that thing will last another couple hundred thousand miles with standard maintenance
My brother , you will make money on that truck. Just what you said , these trucks are going like crazy high on auction sites. Way over what their worth. You did good!!! 👍
well that definitely was more than I was expecting you would walk out the door with, but either way this truck is definitely worth fixing. In fact, it's likely that this truck will go another 200k or even more possibly. At least they were honest and upfront with you about everything else and that it was likely going to cost you more in the end. It certainly sounds like they were very transparent with you about that all along and I don’t have any reason to suspect any fowl play there. I just hope that for your sake or the next owners sake that it stays healthy for a long time.
I'm about to snag a running 4WD 2003 V8 Tundra in the rare Regular Cabin configuration, and thanks to this video, I'll now add the serpentine belt tensioner to the list of immediate replacement items that includes the timing belt and water pump.
I had sort of a similar situation. My check engine light came on for a evap leak. Didn't want to deal with trouble shooting. Decided I'd rather take it to a shop. They tell me a smoke test has to be performed. Get a call back and they tell me a hose was disconnected. 140$ for being lazy.
Always refreshing to watch another fine video. You will get your money back and then some. You can't go wrong with a Toyota truck they are dependable and hold there value. As always stay safe and take care.😊👍🙏
I never go to the dealership to repair my lexus ls430 2001 had 3 timing belt pulleys water pump serpentine belt spark plugs replaced for 400.00. I buy the parts and my mechanic does the work.
I would keep the truck for a while. Seems like a really good truck. Keep it for a while and put the miles on that instead of the silverado. Then sell it for what you got into it
Even though the bill was higher than expected they were very detailed in what they actually did so i don’t think you were really ripped off . i always get a higher bill then expected from shops. you should get 7k all day long , sucks about the frame
It may have cost you more, but when I see work done by a professional I’ll pay more for the car, so I’m sure you will make your money back and more. Better the jobs done right! Good result.also, don’t sell it cheap! Sell it for market value. Spend some time cleaning it up, would assume you could get 10k for it?
You can get more if you clean all the rust to make it more appealing. As I replace parts, I would paint surrounding parts. Recently replaced my sway bar end links and sway bar bushings. I paint the sway bar. Will make it last longer and looks more appealing.
I think you still made the right choice to send it to the dealer if something go wrong they will take care of the problem and the next buyer will be happy to won this car also l know you can do this job but it’s not easy on 4.7 v8 but sometimes let someone do it for you and by the way a lot off dealer they will double that price honest you still got a good deal I even have 2004 same car v8 with turbocharged in Dubai and used it every where hunting racing pull my boat and use it on my farm too this day with out any problems.
Bro right. I just bought an 02 with 259 for 5500, granted it’s in excellent condition. Did need front struts so I replaced front and rear as well as the front Lowe ball joints as a precaution
Toyotas behaving bizarrely is a common theme. My 02 Corolla died coming down a hill. Mice ate my filter and it clogged the MAF sensor. Spent north of $400.00, I authorized a thermostat and coolant flush. Clean truck, too
It sure is nice saving a ton of time, getting work done by a competent mechanic...until the bill comes. Only you know for sure if you did the right thing but that truck will be an easy sell now.
I stepped away to refill my glass of water and after hearing all that was said and done as you read off the repair invoice, '...how much do you guess'? I said to myself $3K. Nailed IT! You had a preminition bc, it was to be expected that an $1,800.00 1st gen with (miles on the clock at ?) not having been a running vehicle, or one you couldn't get running with your own devices and capacities ...well that bill was fortunately paid and your/the truck is home. Now comes a host of future costs. Apparently lower ball joints were in condition to allow you to drive it off the property. I'll now return and listen to the rest to see what the service dept. recommended for immediate or near distant attention. Edit: (...for someone else) Hmmm, I'm back and with more '411' it appears the milage currently is 187K, correct? It makes sense if a previous owner had R & R'd the TB at approx. 90K then you were right to get it done, especially if that was not verifiable, Edit: That receipt will help with resale value to a private party. More post Edit: Inconsequentially I now know you have sold this TUNDRA for profit since this was uploaded.... But here is what else I had said before knowing about your plans to resell to another who will have the following potential issues, as all older vehicles will have wearable things to fix... Also FYI, I've heard of this gen TB can go on for 300 to 300.5K miles miraculously. Actually I'd say more due to its enviorment and one owner not pounding on the right pedal. Also most of us owners of 1st gen 4.7 2UZ-FE TUNDRA's likely are aware; some peeps say you'll expect issues with the starter around 200K (?) ... I'll go to your video list (NOT) after subbing to see if you are still with us, and you haven't sold this fine piece of machinery. ) Ah-HA, you have sold it. Yeah probably a money maker for you, no doubt. ... BTW my TUNDRA 4 X 2 SR5 is and always has been a SW truck ... talk about rust free framework, can't find any at all!
Nice truck great deal i just bought one rolled and im swapping everything into a 66 f100 Ford cause it cost 250$ and i cant find a good Tundra body for under 3k with a bad motor or some other part i have
At least there's some meat left on the bone, and given the repairs it should make for an easy sell. And yes you're right running & driving $1500 pickups are next to impossible to find and will certainly not be this clean.
HOLY PRICE! At least the report they gave you was thorough? That truly sucks though. Really eats your profit. At least you can say it was dealer serviced with timing belt replacement now. Really increases the value. If I buy a Subaru that needs the timing belt, price goes down at least $500. Hope you get good money for it! I'd love a truck like that. Glad you're having fun with the Audi too. Who's the photographer, by the way? You gonna be in the news? :D
When you said it was more than quoted, I figured $1500. Then when you said all the other stuff they did, I figured 2500. 3k is a lot but at least it sounds like you got a competent tech who made sure shit was running ok before turning it over to you.
Dealers will charge you for both arms, legs and even your wiwi. I had the overdrive part of tranny that went bad. They quoted me $7K plus. I towed it to another chop that wanted 4.5K. I towed it to another shop that eventually fixed it for $1200. No issues after that. Of course it failed 7K miles after the 60K warranty. I was doing a lot of HWY miles so it wasn't even a lot of stop and start. I put in about 180 miles daily so it failed a little over a year after I bought my truck. Other than that, everything has been good since.
Great video, honestly for the amount of work they have done I'd be fine at that price. Labor isn't cheap at dealers and my dealer overhere would probably charge more. $3k to reseal my transfer case in my sienna at the dealer.
I think you did good, a quick flip, minimal aggravation, profit-next. Only problem is getting that S-eating grin off your face, lol, when you got it thinking OMG OMG gonna make big $$ on this one, guy didn’t know what he had, lol. I would’ve done the same thing. When it’s that underpriced you pretty much gotta throw the money at the seller and haul ass before anyone figures out what ya did. Did it need the belt? 90k miles..? Uhh yeah.., if ya got it running on the old belt.., someone buys it and a week later it swallows the valves.... wonderful. All the other stuff the dealer found/repaired...? You would’ve been breaking ur ass, wasting time for weeks- broken bolts, all that..., I think you made the right call on this one- start to finish. Good stuff..., and hey where’s Jeb? Lol, peace.
It Toyota shouldn't be to hard of sell and for how clean it is being in rust belt state. Got love that dealer bait and catch trick but no surprise it would been nice if was what they originally said. Should be good runner for next owner. Depend on how long it sat heck fuel goes bad so quick anymore
You didn’t go wrong by replacing the timing belt on this thing because it’s pretty much the only major maintenance item needed to keep these running forever. If I’m not mistaken, I believe Toyota recommends replacing it every 100k miles.
This is good but if you can give a quick wash and wax, this would have been a perfect car as well as a perfect video. Also, the buyers even won't try to negotiate with the big margins.
Well 3k is acceptable considering they found several more issues which got their labor up to 2400$. They got the truck running great which is what they were asked to do. Nevertheless an independent shop would have got it done for under 2k im sure.
Nice video but take the tundra on a cross country road trip and do a video on that instead would be so much more exciting and would show your viewers how reliable or unreliable the truck is !
Those 4.7s if there is a problem with the timing it would have gave you a code for timing and so still lets say it jumped timing ive seen them allways run fine its crazy 90k yes its time to replace but ive seen them With 300k on the original dont recommend it but ive seen it , these are some of the most durable engines on earth Toyota spent 1 billion in the late 80s designing this engine for the first lexus and the goal was durability and longevity tons of these with over 1 million miles
u forgot to tell people that the timing belt change also involves a water pump change to because it is ran off from the timing belt an also the timing belt tensioner
😳 holy cow. I hate dealership. You will make money on this. Even though you spent what you spent. Truck is too nice to lose money. Good job on this find. Looking forward to future adventure
I got my 02 tundra with the 3.6 for 1000 bc they thought the ecu was fried, turns out it was just the crank the had play and it was messing with timing
Another quick comment, You'd figure that a TOYOTA dealership would have stickers that they write on for timing belt services. More proffesional and probably brings more value in how it looks and for even their buisness. I've seen small shops have these. Bad gas is such a big problem in stuff that sits, small engines outboards, 50% i'd say is just bad gas, well bad gas then leads to other issues in the same system.
This is why if you buy a car from an auction Copart Salvage Etc don't take it to the dealer and expect them to be able to create a miracle it was there because somebody didn't like the dealer quote the first time around if you can't do the labor yourself car flipping is not for you

Not surprised it was more, but that was an exceedingly thorough going over with by the tech. Musta had alot of hrs in it and dealer hrs ain’t cheap

Lucky you found a dealership that would even use your parts and provide such a detailed write up. Allows you to tackle the other jobs
I have an 06 Tundra. Absolutely love my truck. Has 241k miles on it. Great truck
My brother , you will make money on that truck. Just what you said , these trucks are going like crazy high on auction sites. Way over what their worth. You did good!!! 👍

Man that was expensive they did fix alternator and water pump but if fuel was problem that would be a bummer great video
I think your AC has a leak at the condenser at the 8:00 mark. There’s your AC oil.
Corner of A/C condenser is leaking as can be seen at 8:00 mark. Hence the weak A/C.

you got what you paid for, you had no idea the real issue with the truck and its old and bolts break, no reason the dealer should eat the cost.
