Thank you so much I have just started to learn mahjong thanks to yakuza 0 and I have to say, your videos are amazing, every single question I had related to kan was answered, its like you read my mind. Its a really complicated game and very daunting to start playing but I am enjoying the learning process.

I watched a couple of your videos recently and I'm genuinely suprised how little subscribers you have. The quality of your content is really damn good.
I'm happy Mahjong Soul is alive. I played Mahjong about 4 years ago, nd sadly stopped. But I'm getting an interest again and I love Mahjong soul - i just wish it allowed you to see what yakus actually are in the win screen. Since it would help me remember lol
When to call a kan: 1. You've already declared a riichi. Call an ankan to reveal 2 dora indicators for yourself and only 1 for your opponents. And it is an additional draw. Smart opponents don't push their hands against a riichi hand with a kan, therefore it's easier to get a tsumo. Nota bene: rules forbid declaring an ankan after riichi if it changes the hand structure. For exmple, you have a waiting form 1112p, it's either an ankou 111p and waiting for pair for 2p, or a pair 11p and a penchan 12p waiting for 3p. If you draw another 1p, you have no right to call a kan, because it would destoy your penchan. 2. You are defending from another player and have run out of safe tiles. Declare an ankan to get a potentially safe tile. But don't call a shouminkan with a dangerous tile. 3. Less than 4 tiles remain in the wall. Declare any kind of kan to devoid someone of their last draw. Nota bene: It's forbidden to call a kan on the last tile from the wall. 4. You desperately need an expensive win (for example you are on the 4th place in the last round) disregarding all the risk. Call any ankan. If your hand is already open, call all kinds of kans. This will probably backfire, but if you have nothing to lose, you may get a lot of dora. 5. (Works only in live games) For some reason you know the rinshan tile or the next dora indicator and you are totally sure they will benefit you. When NOT to call a kan: 1. In any other situation. Sometimes you should even skip a kan in situations described above.
2. As for defense, 4th kan draw is more reasonable way (rarely possible though). Instead of kan, one could try to discard it and get 3 more safe turns, if it passes. Or call a kan and risk to deal into bigger hand. In general, if you call a kan, you have to win this hand. Either you desperately need a win or just confident enough. Riichi is ultimate form of confidence, but early kan may also help with efficiency. A lot of things to consider.
I got a question how can I change the colors on my anki deck I want to have them all the same color because I think I am remembering the colors so I know the answer realy weird but I think it is happening so I want to change my colors and see if is there any difference.
Yup! The important part of calling riichi is knowing whether you hand is open or closed. TAKING OTHER'S TILES is the only thing that makes you open, not making calls!
There is something I've been trying to do and don't know how it actually works. Sometimes you get a potential Kan and you can keep it in your hand, then every turn you are proposed to Kan after drawing. Because of this I tend to wait until tenpai before calling closed Kan to maximise surprise, after a kan chance and not reveal additional dora in case I have to fold. Also when folding, external Quads/triplet tend to be safe tiles.
In the example at the end where you draw the east tile after declaring riichi, wouldn't you be forced to discard it instead of throwing away the 2 pin?
Isn't open kan worth more fu than the closed triplet? Is there a case where it's worth going for those points, maybe if you're stuck on 20 fu or something?
I had a game of sanma where I called an open kan while both my opponents were in riichi. Why? I already had two open sets of dragons and wanted to show the last one.
I feel like it would be beneficial to call Kan if everyone has already opened their hand and you're in tenpai. You get an extra draw and a chance for rinshan after all.
Ohh! Very good point, absolutely yes. If everybody else is open already, you reap all the benefits! Didn't even think to put that in a video but very good catch!
wait so after you call riichi you can still call a closed kan if you draw the 4th tile? Im so confused I thought calling riichi locks you out of doing anything to your hand.
You can call a closed kan as long as it as no effects on what tiles you are waiting for. For example if I have 222 567 789 999 1, then I am tenpai for the pair (1). If I get the 4th 2 in this situation, I can call Kan and nothing will change, so it's legal. However, if I had, 222 34 567 789 WW, then I am on tenpai for 2, 5, 8, and W. Calling a Kan here completely changes the waits (because you can no longer see it as "22 234 567 789 WW" or "222 345 67 789 WW").
I just starting playing mahjong literally 3 days and has no idea what yakus are, but somehow i managed to get chankan on my opponent..i don't remember how it happened all i remember was the Ron button was there and i click it l
I'm a drooling moron that somehow got myself into this - I'm actually losing my mind, because I ALMOST understand. I understand enough to know that when I lost, I know why I lost, but I don't understand enough to know what to build for beyond "a short ladder" or "three pairs".
I found out about having closed kan robbed the hard way. Then I also found out the hard way that in 3-player ppl can win off your pei :D riichi mahjong is beutal
Sometimes when I have 3 dora and a 4th gets discarded I call kan and push as fast as possible if the Hand allows it Or the "watch the world burn" strat (success varies) where you call open kans and play super defensively hoping someone else gets bonked
There's another way of calling the kan calls! For example: If the dora indecatior has a same tiles... That'll be worth 2 han! Another same tile is worth 3 han! And the 4th and final same tile is 4 han! And then... 5th and final dora indecatior call is a Suukaikan! is a ryyouku draw... Be sure to not call the kan too much!
The 4th tile of a kan doesn't count as part of your hand composition. If you call a kan, the corresponding quad is still interpreted as a triplet. Suppose you make a hand of 4 kans and a pair. While you actually have 18 tiles, your hand still has 14.
@@JouzuJuls No need. I am a proficient Mahjong player. This game is simply too luck based to be enjoyable, it isn't as fun as something like poker where you can bluff your odds.
@@treebushWith wind tiles the usual thought process is "if no one is discarding the winds, people are most likely holding on to the their seat wind". Prevalent winds are tricky cuz anyone can benefit from them, but the player sitting on the prevalent wind not only benefits more from calling that wind, but also risks more by discarding his own winds and giving it to someone else, so they have all the reason to hold on to them if they have any of their wind tiles. And if any wind is a dora, expect people to hold onto their seat winds like their life depends on it if they haven't discarded one already.
