    Taking a look at the plumbing for an Ikea vanity. The shutoffs were in the wrong place blocking the location for the tail pipe and the trap adapter / plumbing in the wall was too small for the special Ikea drain parts and P trap.
    List of non-Ikea parts used:
    1 1/4" solvent weld extension tube
    1 1/2"-1 1/4" reducer ring
    1 1/2 90 degree plastic elbow

    You're providing solid and easy solution here - the real problem is the 1 1/4" stub out from the wall. I can't imagine less than 1 1/2" stub outs. Nice job

    Newer sinks from Ikea do not have the overflow tubing. But this 1-1/2 to 1-1/4 drain conversion still remains a problem in 2021. Thanks for this video. I am going to try to find that reducer fitting. An alternative is to use 1-1/4 p-trap and connect it to the vertical output drain pipe from the Ikea hardware (which will need to be cut. You will need an actual reducer coupling there, not just the bushing that looks like a ring.

    Thank you for the info. I'm saving it in case there's an issue with our install. We kind of panicked when we saw that the drawers would not accommodate our existing plumbing (and hadn't opened sink box yet to see that Ikea included their own pipes).

    Last week I finally took the parts that you talk about to the IKEA store in the Denver Metro area and met with the department manager and told him the issues and showed him the parts and provided him with photos of the solution in my brothers bathroom. Tonight I am emailing him all of the Home Depot parts internet pages, my photos and your video. I did tell him that if IKEA is not going to provide the correct connection parts, they at least need to provide as video similar to yours or yours.He did say that ACE Hardware has a package of items that solves the problem.
    I have talked to sales people in the bath department several times over the last few years after finding your video. None of them had ever heard of the problem and told me that no customers had ever complained. I talked to a store assistant manager and was told the same thing. I have called IKEA corporate and told them of the problem and have emailed them your video.
    I feel that everyone that has ever viewed your wonderful video and those that are going to, need to go to their local IKEA and meet with the bathroom department manager and do the same as I have done.
    IKEA needs to deal with this issue.

      Thanks for your thoughtful feedback. This is a unique problem that we are addressing in the video. Typical installatioms won't benefit from this approach. Ikea does include the parts necessary to complete the standard installation. It wouldn't be possible to envision every potential scenario and accommodate them. That's the responsibility of an installer.

    Before doing this I would recommend getting a 2nd or 3rd opinion. I showed this to my plumbing supply guy and he just shook his head. I showed it to my local hardware store plumbing pro and got the same response. (Basically you don't want a 90 coming out of the wall, according to them, and that it would fail a code inspection.) I ended up simply getting a 1.5" --> 1.25" reducer at ACE and doing a very standard 1.25" p trap install, then modified the back of the bottom drawer so it closes normally.

    In the Ikea standard install the drain hole and the waste are offset by a few inches. This affects the position of the cabinet. Which in my case is a problem. It looks like you may have the horizontal drain pipe at an angle to the wall.

      The cabinet has 4” of clearance. I cut all my water pipes so the end of the handles were at 2-2.5 inches and my sewer pipe from the wall was about 1-1.5” max so the 90 degree wouldn’t stick out more than 3” just for safety.

      At the wall there is a 1 1/4" trap adapter. I inserted a piece of 1 1/4" solvent weld extension tubing (www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1-4-in-x-6-in-PVC-Solvent-Weld-Extension-Tube-C9786/205153652) with the flare end cut off into the trap adapter. To the other side of the tubing i attached the 1 1/2" 90 degree fitting that is visible. I used a reducer ring (www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1-2-in-x-1-1-4-in-Reducing-Washer-2-Pack-C7198C/205153871) to make that connection. Hope that helps!

      I don’t see how this works either. How do you thread a 1-1/2 nut on a 1-1/4” trap adapter? It’s too large. The reducer just gives a tight fit for the 1-1/4” tube insert, but you must have a trap adapter that is sized for a 1-1/2” elbow.

    Mate, that upper horizontal drain tube is supposed to "click" into place at a certain position (length). I'm having trouble lining up my drain with the IKEA factory position. If I have it at a different length and seal the end with silicone, do you think I'll be okay? My guess is yes because it is low pressure only.

Assuming I can cut the p trap, get converters, etc., will there be enough clearance for the shutoffs. Some comments I've read say there is only 3 3/4" clearance btw the draw & wall. if needed, can shutoffs be replaced with smaller pieces? thx again!

    • @prokitchenbuilders
      @prokitchenbuilders  6 років тому

      SRB Thanks for the question. I don't know the clearance off the top of my head. Going to put one in next week so I could check it. Regarding the shut offs, as long as you have some pipe sticking out of the wall you can cut it and install new shutoffs closer to the wall. Depending on the the heights, they may even land between drawers so replacement wouldn't be necessary.

    What pieces did you actually have to get from a construction store? It looks like you had to get "a piece of 1 1/4" solvent weld extension tube", but did you also have to get the 90 degree piece right at the wall and the reducer ring? Sorry, just trying to translate into what extra bits I'll need at Home Depot...

    • @prokitchenbuilders
      @prokitchenbuilders  6 років тому

      Lara C. Yes I got the 90 degree slip joint and the reducer ring at home Depot. Keep in mind, part of the issue in this case, in addition to having a too small (1 1/4") trap adapter, was running into the cold water shutoff valve. Using the parts I did helped me to get far enough over to miss it. You might be able to do it differently in your situation depending on what problem you're trying to solve.
