  • How do you customize canvas shoes? What paint do you use to customize canvas sneakers? Do I need to clearcoat my work on canvas shoes? Is GAC900 as good as Angelus 2-soft? Why do customizers use a hairdryer? How to easily paint stars? Do I need to use Angelus 2-thin when airbrushing? How to paint fine lines?
    In this video, I'm going to answer all of these questions as I show you how to customize your own canvas shoes like a pro! I'll explain why canvas shoes are a good option for customizing, debunk some bad customizing advice out there, explain the materials you will need, and how to use them! I also give insight into a portion of my own personal decision-making when it comes to planning my customs.
    After watching this video, you'll feel more confident to customize your canvas shoes to make them unique, and importantly, durable! I haven't seen any videos out there yet with some of this information, so make sure you watch till the end for all of my secrets!

    This was a very informative video. Thanks for sharing ur knowledge. I'm not a person that can draw like a professional but I can design and at least trace art work on sneakers. I love this artwork u put on the converse. U definitely did these sneakers some justice.

    Thanks for such an informative video! I was gonna use cheap, flaky acrylic pens on my new converse - but after watching this vid I've decided to use the materials you suggested and paint some proper art. Your artwork was incredible!

    Quick question. For the red space ship, did you add GAC/2 SOFT or did you just use Angelus out of the bottle? I am painting racing stripes on a pair or Chucks. I used some white mixed with 2-soft to make the stripes in primer to keep the material flexable. Not sure if I should add 2-soft to the stripe colors (pale blue & orange). Thanks for the help.

    • @thatmadartist
      @thatmadartist  2 місяці тому

      I used 2-soft for the base coat but then solid Angelus after that. Have a look at my most recent video. I did an experiment to see whether or not I'll use 2soft again in the future.

    Thank you for this informative tutorial! I have a question, I´d rather use Posca pens because I´m really not good with a brush. Posca says you need to wash the shoes first to remove chemicals, then paint them and then iron/ blow dry them to fix the colour. They say nothing about sealing them however, so now I wonder what will happen to canvas shoes customised with Posca (sealed or not). What is the reason you don´t recommed Posca for canvas? I´m about to buy a set, but I´m feeling very insecure.

    • @thatmadartist
      @thatmadartist  5 місяців тому +1

      Hello! Great question! You can use Posca pens! They've just developed a little bit of hate in the customizing world because they aren't as versatile as paints. To be honest for leather pairs I dont recommend using them because the color fades in the sunlight quicker than Angelus - but on canvas shoes, the only real downside is that if you want thin clean lines (like outlining a character) the pens tend to give them a bit of a fuzzy finish because of the material (something you can avoid with a brush). I have also heard online that POSCA art tends to be less durable in the long run compared to other sneaker paint, but I haven't experienced that. I say if you are feeling good about using POSCA you should do it, maybe that problem wont be relevant to you 😎
      Regarding a finisher, the heat sealing (hairdryer or iron) works really well, just make sure that you are doing it once the paint is already dry. If you hairdry while the paint is wet (say to speed the process up) you can end up evaporating the binder in the paint (just keep that in mind).
      I recommend using an Angelus topcoat finisher once it is dry just to be completely safe and improve durability long term.
      Hope it goes well!!

    Amazing video, can I ask how much of Angelus 4 coat do you use on one pair of shoes? I want to customize some canvas sneakers (around 4 pairs) for myself and I don't know if I should buy bigger or smaller bottle. Thanks

    • @thatmadartist
      @thatmadartist  26 днів тому

      @rasharkas8898 for 4 pairs of canvas shoes you COULD get away with the small bottle, but it depends on how much art coverage there is. If it's 4 pairs of art covering like 100% of the surface area like in my video, I'd get the bigger bottle. Especially since this gives you the opportunity to give multiple coats.
      Just be aware that Flat 4-coat can give your art a chalky/pastel kind of finish. It's especially evident with darker colors. I prefer to use Angelus matte for an all round versatile (color accurate) finish
      Hope this was helpful!

    If design does not cover entire shoe and part of it will be original unpainted colour, do you clear coat painted part only or unpainted one as well? Thank you. Great video btw.

    • @thatmadartist

      I clearcoat the whole area just so that there isn't a difference between the texture or finish.

    Will acrylic canvas paint already be enough without mixing it with something to paint the shoes and not have them crack?

    • @thatmadartist
      @thatmadartist  7 місяців тому

      If you just use acrylic paint you run the risk of them cracking, that's why we ads the GAC fabric medium to give the paint extra flexibility!

      The paint will stay on if you do everything the way we mentioned! You just still have to treat them well and clean them gently with a soft sponge (don't use a hard brush or chemicals)
