Every generation has their own rebellion. Things we do to stand out and prove we aren't our parents. It's human nature. My father had his ear pierced. My uncle on my mom's side came home with a fake ear ring, his mom snatched it off. It was coming out, with or without the ear.
But then you mature through another ten years, you look back on pics from your rebellious era, and you cringe at it. That's when you start seeing life from the other side, and you realize your parents had a rebellious faze too, and they were speaking from experience. It's not about NOT being individualistic, it's about being yourself while maintaining self respect for yourself, and your family image. It's about respect.

My grandfather always used to say before you leave the house make sure that you look appropriate so that people in public take you serious. He was a wise man even after he retired for 20+ years that man left the house wearing slacks penny loafers shined up nice shirts and sweatersall dressed up and nowhere really to be but he also had a lot of dignity and a lot of respect for himself and his family and did not want to misrepresent his family name.
