@@SouthPhilaMilla My older sister took me to see that in the theater on my 10th birthday. The opening scene set everyone up for lighthearted comedy using Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks, but when that face showed up, the entire theater erupted into screams. It's a moment of seeing a film in a theater that I'll never forget.
I watched it for the first time last night and the one thing I didn’t like is that we’re supposed to believe that pock marked Tom Atkins is able to nail a prime Jamie Lee Curtis after like two lines of dialogue🤯
Pet Sematary absolutely freaked me out as a teenager, because of Zelda. Can't believe you didn't bring her up. She haunted my dreams! Also, why so many shots of Kiefer Sutherland's David if you're not going to mention Lost Boys?
I am with you... I have seen tons of horror movies the past 40 years and Zelda is the only one who still creeps me out... I believe the character was played by a male actor
I was about 4 years old, my mom hired a babysitter and went out, I was sent to bed early because the babysitter wanted to watch a movie. That movie was Evil Dead. Of course I snuck out of my room and watched the movie as I hid behind the couch. I had nightmares for months after that movie. But once I finally recovered, it became my favorite horror movie by far.
I was 8 years old in 1982. "Poltergeist" came out that year. The scenes with the clown and tree still haunt me to this day. I blame this movie for my fear of clowns. This film also, supposedly, has a curse on it. There are many deaths from the first two films, and sadly, the little girl (Heather O'Rourke) died right before the 3rd film was released.
They were really awesome to watch at the drive in especially if you had friends or ppl you knew in other cars lol, so much fun sneaking up and scaring the crap out of each other lol
For me, it wasn't CreepShow, it was Tales from the Darkside. The Gargoyle transformation stuck with me. The other one is The Changling. The scene with the ball bouncing down the stairs after he threw it off the bridge terrorfied me, why? don't know. I was pretty young, lol.
One Dark Night and The House By the Cemetery have been stuck in my mind for all these years. Honorable mention goes to Sleepaway Camp, The Changeling, and Ghost Story.
A very VERY good list! The House by the Cemetery is my favourite Fulci film and proper creepy, so much so that not even Bob's bad voice over can spoil it. Hahaha!
😂😂 Sleepaway Camp... I didn't actually watch that movie until the late 90s. I think I was around 17 or 18 and a friend and I rented it one Friday night. Didn't think much of it until a few weeks later when we rented Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3. We got stoned and laughed so hard at all of Angela's dark humor and one liners. Never thought it was scary... comical, yes!
Carpenter was a genius and The Thing would absolutely be at the top of my list as well. I watch it,often. Just want to mention that the original “The Thing” movie was in 1951, and Carpenter followed some of the formula. Of course he amped up the isolation and paranoia as you said. It was all based on a novella called “Who Goes There”. Just fun fact.
I LOVED Fright Night and Creepshow! Man, they definitely don't make horror films like this anymore!!!! So many good ones on this list, and of course, anything Steven King is genius.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Zelda in Pet Sematary. She was the only part of that movie that freaked me out. Also the movies that unnerved me in the 80s Sleepaway Camp and Pieces.
I'm a nerves of steel diehard horror movie fan. Very few movies or scenes shock the heck out of me. These are the few I can think of: 1. Friday the 13th part1: Mrs Vorhees mimicking a child's voice saying "help me" to draw the girl out of the cabin. 2. Nightmare on Elm St part 1: Freddy walking in alley with outstretched arms which was very abstractly horrific 3. The Shining- Wendy discovers Jack's manuscript is just a bunch nonsense showing how unstable he is 4. Pet Semetary- Zelda 5. The Wickerman (original)- the revelation of the cop's fate and when rewatching, seeing everyone acting normally while knowing I'm sure there's others, but those give me the heeby jeeps every time.
American Ware Wolf in London, and Fright Night are my 2 favorite horror movies of all time. And i can not remember if Salems Lot was late 70's or early 80's. But that scared me ,and gave me night mare's when i was a kid.

@katieturner6685 it was super cool back then but then when you get older and everybody you know starts to disappear for real it's sort of sad so it's nice to go back and pretend again
Yeah, that one gave me nightmares! When he was eating the raw meat and the transformation scenes disturbed me, even though I had already seen tons of horror movies by then. I think I was maybe 10 years old and probably shouldn't have been allowed to see that!
The first 3-4 Friday the 13th movies, when they still took it seriously, scared me as a kid. Also Hell Night, although it was just a basic slasher. If you can get past the first cheesy 15 minutes or so, it's pretty creepy and lots of tense moments! Not too many people seem to know about this one. Salems' Lot was made for tv but is still one of the creepiest vampire movies ever. There were alot of made for tv horror movies back then that were pretty scary. Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, anyone?
One movie that freaked me out was 1981's "The Funhouse"...another movie I was obsessed with but not necessarily scared by (still in the horror genre) was 1982's "Cat People". David Bowie does the theme song "Putting Out the Fire", which is produced by Giorgio Moroder, so had an 80's feel to it but in a kind of haunting way...
Yeah I was disturbed by most of these films. Being born in 1973 meant I was ripe for 80s cable TV classics such as these. Yeah the first nightmare on elm Street really messed with my head.
THE THING was fighting an uphill battle. It opened the same weekend as BLADE RUNNER, which wasn't a hit but it had a strong opening. It was competing with: E T. POLTERGEIST, ROCKY 3 and STAR TREK 2. Most critics gave the movie scathing reviews which didn't help matters.
To soften Cujo just a little bit, the St Bernards were so sweet and friendly their tails were wagging constantly. They had to somehow bandage them so they wouldn't wag so strongly.
Maybe I'm jaded in old age but, the last movie to really scare the bejeebers out of me was The Exorcist, first movie. I saw that movie 14 times, each time I had to be tripping on LSD, each time I'd get just a few scenes farther than the last time before I had to get up and run out of the theater. It wasn't until 78 - 79, while in prison and stone cold sober, I finally saw the full movie, and it was a laugh riot.
Oh damn... I couldn't imagine watching that shit trippin. It was somewhat terrifying to me for the first handful of times I watched it. I was probably 12 or 13, and the "satanic panic" era was ending... and that added to the scare effect. I did however watch one of the Hellraiser movies, either 2 or 3, while I was trippin. It was just me and my buddy, who also loved horror movies. There's this scene where the guy believes he has bugs coming out of him and all over his body, and the crazy doctor dude gives him a razor blade.... dude starts going nuts with that razor on himself. I'll never forget that... shit was intense.
I've seen these all too back in the 80s. They freaked me out. I loved Night of the Comet. & Twilight Zone. The Fly. But the scariest of all films for me as a kid was the Exorcist. I know that's a 70s movie but it did the most damage imo.😅
“Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things” I saw this when I was 10-11 and it was my first taste of flesh eating zombies. It scared me so badly that I couldn’t sleep without the lights on for months! I had to speak with a therapist! The first few weeks my mother had to sit beside me until I fell asleep. I swear I’m not exaggerating any of that. Even now if I watch it I can still remember how it terrified me. 😱
Thanks for the mention to Night of the Comet. The Omen movies, especially the second one in particular scared me to my core. I was raised Catholic and there was that extra level of evil.
The Twilight Zone movie absolutely WRECKED me as a kid. Specifically the sister without a mouth, causing me to run outside and not come back inside for a good long while 🤣
I watched an interview with Ted Danson about this movie. He said his daughter was still very young and she happened to be on the set the day he was in full monster makeup. He said he tried to avoid her so as not to share her. He was goofing around and she walked around the corner, saw him in makeup, and just said "Ho Dad,"and kept walking.
A few others for me are Hellraiser, Children of the Corn and They Live. I saw so many of these in a theater when I was a kid/teenager. ❤ To this day, some of my favorite movie lines are “Meteor s**t!” and “It’s dead people screamin’!” I watched Fright Night every day for almost a year. lol
In terms of 80's horror, the ones that scared me the most were least to most, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Shining, The Fly, and Friday The 13th.Freddy scared me first time I saw him, but then made me burst out laughing, dark humour is what gets me laughing the most and Freddy is a master of it, so that made me feel good about being so scared of him, as I loved that evil bastard. The Shining though, that unnerved me, filled me with dread and over all scared the crap out of me all at once. Jack Nicholson killed it as Jack Torrance, he he was brutal in that film. Now The Fly, that just grossed me out while scarring me beyond all ration thought, yet I could not look away, that film is masterful, and yes Jeff Goldblum is masterful in the role, gotta love him. Friday The 13th, that entire film is filled with a sense of something being off, and a underlying sense of dread. The build up through out the film, and the reveal of Pamela Voorhees as the killer was gold. Betsy Palmer gave one of the greatest performances in horror of all time. Jason I cheer for and love, but Pamela, I fear more than any other horror icon. For one reason, she is the most real out of all of them. She has presence, she has intimidation, cunning, madness and rage, pure unadulterated rage you can feel. To this day Pamela Voorhees scares me far more than Jason ever will.
i remember watching The Evil Dead with my cousin when I was 14. I turned that into a comedy for him with all of the jump scares I got hit with from watching that.
Motel Hell was one that scared me quite a bit, also Terror Train had me scared as well. Both movies premiered in 1980 coincidentally. If you have not seen these two movies they are a must watch.
Damn good list especially in the lower end. Only others I might include somewhere might be The Blob (ok not so scary, but still pretty effective), The Hidden, Life Force, Day of the Dead, the fog and Exorcist 3.
Movies that scared the sh!t outta me as a kid: "The Exorcist"* "Phantasm" "Scanners" "The Shining" "The Fog" "An American Werewolf in London" "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" "The Howling" "The Beast Within"
The most scared I have ever been in my life, is from Tarman. I can't even describe how terrified I was, that would do it any justice. I had to sleep with all my lights on for at least a month. I don't know what is what about that particular zombie that scared me so bad. But whatever it was, it worked. It took me 20 years before I was able to watch that movie again.
I know The Thing was based on a short-story/novella written in the late 1930's. And the original author was obliviously inspired by the earlier writing of H.P. Lovecraft. The Thing often shows up on lists of Lovecraftian horror films, and is one of my all-time favorites
The Changeling freaked me out so much I had to sleep with the light on for a week afterwards! When the ball came bouncing down the stairs and when he was chased by the wheelchair. Shudder
The movie that scared the shit out of me when I was growing up was Friday the 13th and especially Nightmare on Elm Street. When I was a kid Freddy especially scared the shit out of me. Because at least with Jason you can run from him, but when it comes to Freddy you can't avoid sleeping. Thank you for mentioning pet Sematary & Creepshow, and for me the part of Twilight zone that scared the shit out of me was the beginning.
If I was to break my rules on this one and talk about that something from the 70s, then Salem‘s lot would be by far number one as the most traumatic horror movie I ever saw as a child. Especially that scene with the kid outside the window being asked let in that broke me as a kid.
I can 100% agree with this list as a child growing up in the 80’s. Me and my grand mother would always go to the theaters to see these movies or rent the VHS tapes. I remember seeing the first nightmare on elm street and thinking it was the scariest thing my young mind had ever seen in my life up to that point. Only move I think you missed was “The Believers” that movie was absolutely terrifying. I haven’t watched since the 80’s because it was just too real for me.
Great movies, ive seen most of them and at that time we had VCR player. Instead of spended time with cellphones like today, we slept over at friends, bought snacks and cokes and had movie nights with horror-theme. It was one of my best time. Thank you for this.
All these movies scared me as a kid, but i dont remember being scared cuz i'd watch em over and over till they weren't scary anymore. But the one on the list that i can actually remember scaring me was pet cemetery, and the only reason was because i was home alone in the basement with no lights on. Your #1 imo is overrated and not scary at all...but i will admit the trailer scared me...and i would repeat the words to that trailer for my parents friends when they'd throw a party (using that creepy voice that were in all the trailers back in the 80s). And they'd all gather around to watch me do it, creeping them out like i was some kinda chucky doll or something. Thanks for the great video! PS all these movies were great...but there were tons more (maybe do a pt 2?). eg. pin (1988), the pit (1981), prince of darkness (1987), and the brain (1988)...i ended up going to the highschool where they filmed a ton of the movie (years later), and would drive by the Xerox building every second friday that was the home base for the brain
Great list! For me, it was: Ghost Story - 1981 Prince of Darkness - 1987 The Entity - 1982 Amityville Horror - 1979 As a child/teen watching these, my imagination tended to fill in the details where the FX fell short, but really well done movies.
You must be a HUGE Friday the 13th fan to put that movie in the presence of ANY of the rest of these! LOL Just kidding! I know it's so iconic because it launched a mega franchise but I'm bewildered as to how the first movie ever spawned even a sequel. This was really fun, thanks for a something different than what I have been seeing! New subscriber!
In the 80s we WERE inundated with horror movies-big time. So much so that it’s called the decade of overkill. The 70s was a far more important decade in horror. There are some great 80s horror films, but far less than the 70s, when plots were truly groundbreaking. 1980’s F the 13th is widely considered to be the beginning of horror overkill.
The 80's....the best decade for movies and music. Especially 1982!

The Shinning and Nightmare on Elm Street are the two that made a huge impression on me as a kid.
Friday the 13th came out in ‘80 not ‘89, but forgivable since 9 and 0 😂are next to each other
Thank you I was going to remind him of that. I'm a stickler for dates and times. 🕛📅
I was gonna say I thought that one was 1980 but I figured someone else already probably noticed
Silver Bullet scared me as a kid. That and the exorcist. Saw both as a very young child, and I couldn't sleep without a light on for a long time.
A few others for me are Hellraiser, Children of the Corn and They Live.
I saw so many of these in a theater when I was a kid/teenager. ❤ To this day, some of my favorite movie lines are “Meteor s**t!” and “It’s dead people screamin’!” I watched Fright Night every day for almost a year. lol
Hellraiser series still some of my favourites.
Great collection! Thanks for bringing my nightmares back!
Great video!
As a kid, i loved horror movies. They became my legitimate bedtime stories. And dear God, the practical effects were absolute perfection!
This is what makes horror movies great, because I guarantee no one else will have this same take as you!
@@NoleFan74 Not exactly the same no, but there could be some who might have a similar take, but yes, not exactly the same.
These were awesome picks from the 80s.
Am I the only one that loved Alligator? The Alligator that resides in the sewer, so realistic lol
Alligator freaked us out ,one scene where it came up through manhole ,while teens were playing streetball
@jr8899 That was scary stuff back then, had you thinking alligators were going to jump out from behind the trash cans lol
The Omen hands down was the scariest movie I saw as a kid.
I love just about all of these movies. The only one which gave me actual nightmares was The Fly ! I was 17 and saw it alone in the cinema ! xx
I saw the fly at age 8 and couldn't sleep for months after watching
I was 9 when that movie came out, it just grossed me out that's all.
@@daniellemaroney2931 totally agree with you. Not a good movie, just a gross one.
i remember watching The Evil Dead with my cousin when I was 14. I turned that into a comedy for him with all of the jump scares I got hit with from watching that.
The gate always scared me
the gate was a serious beauty
Yes! Something about the monster falling into a bunch of little monsters scared me! 😂
@@ghoulgoil5029 we knew it was play doe...but thats what made it trippy
When a Stranger Calls. Scared me so much. Hated babysitting after seeing that.
Agree! I don't think any other movie scares me on a such a primal level as that 1979 film.
Great list! After the Howling, any growl like noise at night would send us running!
I really liked Terror Train with Jamie Lee Curtis
This is the most underrated horror movie of all time
I was born in 86, so I caught all of these in the 90's on reruns on TV. The Raft still gets me lol
Motel Hell was one that scared me quite a bit, also Terror Train had me scared as well. Both movies premiered in 1980 coincidentally. If you have not seen these two movies they are a must watch.
Very good picks. ❤ I think you got all the best ones.
Phantasm and Hellraiser should be on your list
But it was a list of HIS movies, no movies in general
I'd say Night of the Demons should have been on here, but you ended the list with a bang
One of my all time favorites
Ted Danson buried to his head always stuck with me. Will never forget.
Damn good list especially in the lower end. Only others I might include somewhere might be The Blob (ok not so scary, but still pretty effective),
The Hidden, Life Force, Day of the Dead, the fog and Exorcist 3.
Good to see Life Force has gotten somewhat of a cult following now; check out the bluray director's cut if you haven't already done so!
Movies that scared the sh!t outta me as a kid:
"The Exorcist"*
"Phantasm"
"Scanners"
"The Shining"
"The Fog"
"An American Werewolf in London"
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"
"The Howling"
"The Beast Within"
The most scared I have ever been in my life, is from Tarman. I can't even describe how terrified I was, that would do it any justice. I had to sleep with all my lights on for at least a month. I don't know what is what about that particular zombie that scared me so bad. But whatever it was, it worked. It took me 20 years before I was able to watch that movie again.
I absolutely love Night of the Comet
Me too! The cheerleader inspired BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
Night of the Comet is a fantastic film!
Great video bro.
Lots of Classics
I know The Thing was based on a short-story/novella written in the late 1930's. And the original author was obliviously inspired by the earlier writing of H.P. Lovecraft. The Thing often shows up on lists of Lovecraftian horror films, and is one of my all-time favorites
Also a remake of a 1950s movie, The Thing from Another World, also wonderful film.
The Deadly Spawn and Mausoleum Xtro i think ? Love horror from the 80s ooooh Slugs freaked me out too
The Changeling freaked me out so much I had to sleep with the light on for a week afterwards!
Salems Lot 1979...tapping vampires scared me the most.
1979 is close enough to 1980.
If I was to break my rules on this one and talk about that something from the 70s, then Salem‘s lot would be by far number one as the most traumatic horror movie I ever saw as a child. Especially that scene with the kid outside the window being asked let in that broke me as a kid.
How about Critters? Attack of the Killér Clowns?
Absolutely awesome!! All my favorites!!! These films made us who we are!!!!
LOL, I still watch “The Shining” and “The Thing” to this day.
Loving childhood and part of my being😢💗 LOVED MOVIES OF THE '80❤ Thank you ,friend for this and your 💎 of a channel that I found⭐️✨️
Great video!!!
Does anyone remember Dark Night of the Scarecrow? That was so scary.
Great list! For me, it was:
Ghost Story - 1981
Prince of Darkness - 1987
The Entity - 1982
Amityville Horror - 1979
As a child/teen watching these, my imagination tended to fill in the details where the FX fell short, but really well done movies.
New subscriber!
whats the song in the beginning
In the 80s we WERE inundated with horror movies-big time. So much so that it’s called the decade of overkill. The 70s was a far more important decade in horror. There are some great 80s horror films, but far less than the 70s, when plots were truly groundbreaking. 1980’s F the 13th is widely considered to be the beginning of horror overkill.
Great video. Done some good moves there 😎👍🏻
Good list! Glad you included the underrated Night of the Comet
It wouldnt be an 80's movie montage with out a BMX bike with mag wheels! 8:29
I seen all these movies as a kid in the 80s. Loved it! And I too was scared big time, but still loved it!!
FYI: this is factual too. Steven Spielberg used actual skeletons in the pool in poltergeist. So Jo Beth Williams reaction is a true one
