I was born in Iceland and used to go back for summer break every year. I can 100% attest to babies being left outside stores. Even better, if the baby is crying good chance a stranger will stop to rock it back to sleep.
A unicorn of a country indeed.

Fermented shark is most def. not a "typical" food in Iceland lol, it is a traditional food that is not very often eaten today, most taste it maybe once a year as a side treat with other old traditional meals ....and many wont touch it, especially younger generations.

Yes, the name selection is limited due to an effort to uphold the icelandic language, and if people outside the country move here and have a child the same applies to them but you can come up with names outside of the selection of names as long as it works well with the language(hope that clears it up😁)

I was in Iceland for almost 3 months last summer and really enjoyed the midnight sun. I have been in Finnish Lapland for 4 months now and have survived the polar night very well thanks to vitamin D tablets. During this time, I did not meet any depressed Finns. These actually cope very well with the long polar night. What I particularly liked about Iceland except the gigantic nature was that there is no McD - not one branch in the whole country!!!

7:25 Iceland is the second largest island in Europe after England?
According to my knowledge, the largest island in Europe is Greenland.
Greenland (Danish) is on the American continent but belongs to Europe.
The Canary Islands (Spanish) are located on the African continent and is a part of Europe.

regarding the wild animals in Iceland, I must clarify...when humans arrived, there were no rats, no mice, no mink, no reindeer...the only wild mammal here was, and still is the only original one, the arctic fox.
Everything else people brought here, either by accident or not.
There are no mosquitoes in Iceland, only it´s cousin, the midge.
The mink was brought here to harvest it´s fur, but soon some of them escaped the farms and have been a menace ever since, as a very invasive species.
If you ever come up here, give me a shout.

8:25 the name list is mainly to protect the Icelandic language and if the name falls within the laws of what the name must have or be able to do then that name is acceptable.
9:50 the sheeps are now about 450 thousand not 600 thousand.
23:08 i don't think this is happening in Iceland much, i think its maybe happened allot back in the day.
24:12 The svið food its not an correct picture shown there. not sure if you would even wanna see the real picture. back in the old day the brain was also used as food and you can still get some today, everything of the sheep was used due to food not being easy to come by like that, and wasting food was not well likened.
27:56 the food he describes i have never heard of and i believe its food from back in the day.

Now I'm not the most experienced with this as I am a young Icelander who does not have any children (yet) but if I remember correctly you can attempt to name your baby anything but it must go through a complex screening process and those 2.500 are just the ones that are officially recognized names.
For example I use my own name as my user name: Dalkvist is not recognized ans an official name so my name can not end in it. A full name must at least end in an officially recognized name!
EDIT: Fun fact is that the great geyser is actually where the English word for geyser comes from as the Icelandic word for that specific geyser is Geysir!

  • @Varasalvi2
    @Varasalvi2 Рік тому +5

You can indeed not name your kid whatever you want, but its not as restrictive as he makes it out to be. If the name you want is not on the approved list, you can apply for it, and it may or may not be accepted. The purpose is i believe to preserve the Icelandic language and culture.
For example, my half sister was named a unique name which had to be applied for at the time. "Eyja" is her name, and it simply means "Island". When shes being a bit stupid i call her "Eyðieyja", which means "desert island".
I don't know what specific rules that are in place, but the general gist is if the name is Icelandic in nature, has connection to the Icelandic language or old norse and is in general keeping to the spirit of the Icelandic language.

    1. the aurora usually starts in september/october, not mid december
    4. Iceland is indeed Nordic and part of the Nordic countries, the language is even the closest to the old Norse as you can get, it is however not part of Scandinavia and I guess that's where the confusion comes from
    11. Yes that is true, however the list keeps growing every year due to names being accepted by the naming committee. It's to preserve the grammar
    12. The pronunciation of Já is incorrect, the way he says it is closer to Jah, which is a word of doubt, but the correct pronunciation is closer to youw.
    15. I'm 1.96m
    16. The old Geysir, which the word geyser is derived from, was said to be able to spew 80m in the air when it was active (170 pre-1845 according to some sources), it hasn't been active in about 120 years now (excluding a short period after the big earthquake in 2000). The one you see in the video is Strokkur, which spews every 10 minutes or so and only up to about 20-30m at most
    23. Don't forget the 40% income tax
    25. isolation and wrongful ideas about the harmfulness and addictiveness of the beer. It was considered too addictive and legalizing it would increase drinking among young people and workers. This of course is complete nonsense as with all bans made by governments on substances of any kind
    50. This is wrong, we do have ants that live under Reykjavik in the severs. The video might be old as they have just recently been discovered
    62. He absolutely butchered that name after Katla, I have no clue what he was trying to say
    70. Svið is literally a sheep's head and not a stew, the stew shown in the video is most likely stock footage and not even icelandic
    73. Seals are common and can be observed all around the island, not just in the mentioned places
    77. This is a weird one, the video shows the Laugavegur trail which is one of the longest and oldest at 55km long, there is a Laugavegur road in center Reykjavik which matches what he said about the road to the washing pools but it's not even the longest in Reykjavik. There must be some confusion on his part related to that
    83. Never heard of that in my 29 years of living in Iceland
    85. That is simply wrong, you don't need a permit to own a dog, I have 3 dogs myself

By old German legends alone, Iceland and Germany are closely linked. e.g. through the Nibelungen saga , which is also told in Scandinavia. There Siegfried and King Gunther drive to the mystical island of Iceland to meet the warrior and queen Brynhild .King Gunther marries Brynhild then, not exactly gentleman moderate. Overhooded the Nibelungen saga would be worth a Hollywood film adaptation. With dwarves, stealths, dragons, gold treasures, sex, intrigues, great battles and murder 😄

Trust me when I say that sheep's heads are delicious. Salted and sometimes also smoked, then boiled, the meet is super tender and tasty. My father used to by them from the local slaughter house dirt cheap. For a more pleasant look, the teeth should be pulled out before preparing them.
Don't be spooked by the eyes. The muscle at the back is the greatest treat you'll ever taste. The liquid inside the eyes can be squeezed onto a crushed piece of boiled potato. Tastes great!
We never ate the eyes themselves, but I know some people do.
I you get a chance, do try it. Best served with beer and a little bitter, strong dram.

Hi Nate, in the UK in the 70's there was a program on TV called Mastermind and the presenter and question asker (a quite high knowledge base is needed for this "quiz"), he was called Magnus Magnusson, you might have realised that this is to do with the name thing near the beginning of the video.
I recall something being mentioned a few years back that the sure name (last name) is how they identify and this is taken from the fathers first name, this would explain why the master mind presenters name is pretty much the same for both names Magnus Magnus Son of Magnus, so having a list of names to be used helps to keep the islands names alive for generations to come, also it's either Iceland or the Nordic countries which have an app so they can check that a potential partner is not a close relative, the app will search the database and check for you 😂

There are several Icelandic geologists on UA-cam, with interesting comments.
Thingvellir is the traditional place to convene, for this ‘oldest democracy in the world’. Thingvellir is within the rise / rift, that is where the tectonic plates touch; that is, where the mid-Atlantic rise adds to the European plate on the east, and to the American plate to the west. Another place where this phenomenon can be observed conveniently, is south of Reykjavik, in the Reykjanes area.
What is popular among European tourists, is to rent a sturdy car, and do the grand tour around the island in about 2 weeks (and find a group to travel with).

If you want to go to a hot lagoon in Iceland like blue lagoon go a bit more to the north-east of the country. There is the big lake Myvatn where you find the myvatn thermal bath. It has the same good and hot water like the blue lagoon, is cheaper and less overcrowded than the very touristic blue lagoon. The water of both - blue and myvatn lagoon - comes from geothermal power plants which produce steam and heat from using the hot underground water. After using the water it is cleaned and as it is still 80°C hot comes into the pools where it mixes with cool water to the 37-39°C bathing temperature. Funny to swim in the outside in hot water while its snowing 🙂
There are no mosquitos in Iceland which will bite you, but there are myflyer - kind of mosquitos, which will not bite but fly into your ear 🙂

Nate, with a German wife you must be familiar with their use of compound words, i.e. words that APPEAR incomprehensibly long and complicated, but are simply 2, 3 or 4 words stuck together. Being a Germanic language, rather closely related to German, Icelandic has the same quirk. If you know how to break them up, everything becomes a lot simpler.
Take the famous name of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull that caused the bureaucrats to close down large areas of airspace. It is simply 3 words stuck together: Eyja-fjalla-jökull. Eyja (islands, plural) fjalla (mountains, plural) and jökull (glacier, singular). The literal meaning is "glacier on mountains seen from the islands" (Vestmannaeyjar) - or perhaps the meaning could be reversed; the glacier on top of the mountains from where the islands can be seen.
Vestmannaeyjar is another compound word: Vest-manna-eyjar (West-men-islands).

Minimum wage in Iceland is about 2500$, average salary in 2024 is about 5000$. Then there are of course the 10% that own about 90% of the economy. Iceland is in fact part of the Nordic Countries and we are probably proudest of our nature, clean water, good educational system and great welfare system. Basic health care is free, or mostly, where you pay 10$ to see a family doctor and 30$ to visit a specialist. We have high taxes but the taxes go towards healthcare for every individual, education and social services. In 2023, 75% of cars that were sold in Iceland were electric (Tesla and Polestar being the top sellers). The economy depends mostly on tourism, sciences, finances and fishing industry. Just a few facts if you are curious ;)

Hi Nate, we were in Iceland too. I planned the 13 days trip by myself. We took an 4WD as vehicle. So you can drive more off roads, what happens time by time. If you go by rental car you can explore the land in your own pace. The nature is absolute impressive. Not only the volcanism but also those large blue fields of Nootka lupines. Food is expensive but high quality, I remember eating green mussels. I'm not a mussel eater, but in Iceland it tasted really good. Deep cold water...
We also visited the north west fjords. Normally you don't do that. There you can watch puffins. Many gravel roads, friendly people, special food, scuba diving between Europe and America in crystal clear water, countless stunning waterfalls, glaciers, ice on beach, deserted areas, hot pots.... I can go on with listing beautiful places... If you are interested in our route, just let me know.
But you have to visit Iceland for sure!

The alcohol part wasn't entirely true. Yes alcohol was banned, but firstly wine was legalized, and then 13 years later all other alcohol was legalized except for beers with an alcohol content over 2.25%, which was then later lifted in 1989. One of the reasoning behind beer being banned longer is believed to be, to disencourage younger people from drinking, and the 2.25% is probably a similar reason to other places in europe during that time, since there wasn't much pure drinkable fresh water, so the small alcohol content worked a bit like disinfectant in the drinks, while not getting you drunk.

It is a beautiful country and people. Although little bit crazy, like in every Nordic Countries. It may be an issue to get used to 24/7 "daylight" or vice versa, darkness. But NO mosquitos!!! You could "prepare" your self like leaving some lights on during the night and "thick curtains" during day time. At least ask your hotel, B&B, Airbnb.... if they have any "black out" items for windows. Very easy way to see different kind of places and seasons in Iceland is to watch TV-Series like: "Trapped", "Entrapped", "Katla", "Black Sands", "The Valhalla Murders", "Case"...or old Top Gear Iceland episodes or GT (Grand Tour) Iceland episodes. And remember, there is no "bad weather", only bad or wrong clothing!! Best Regards from Finland. Ps. I also recommend a "local" band called "Kaleo" and their music videos made in Iceland.

Not everything was accurate but fun to listen to. The name IG thing used to be very strict and still is in some cases. My granddaughter has a foreign name but it is excepted because it fits into the language. Unfortunately you can now find ants but only in a small area for now. The shark is good and tasty but not something I would eat as a meal. The 24 hour night is not all over Iceland here in the south where I live we get about 4 hours of daylight during the darkest days
The best way to get to know us is by coming over for a visit. I would highly recommend diving in Silfra.
Vertu velkominn og vonandi sjáumst við seinna.

So many things are not accurate in this video and especially about the food. Generally wedo not have problems with rats in our houses. Houses people live in today are mostly modern buildings, no one lives in It’s not always snow on the whole island during winter, the south coast can sometime give you snowless Christmas, we call that red Christmas.

  • @TJAevarr
    @TJAevarr 4 місяці тому

Things that are not correct, or inaccurate in the video you are watching.
    1. it is not correct that there is 24hr of darkness during winter, during the darkest months, December, there is still about 4-5 hrs of daylight per day, and while it does not get dark during the hight of summer, the sun does dip below the horizon, remember the island is just south (1-2 degrees) of the artic circle.
    2. Wearing Christmas jumpers is not a thing in Iceland, we tend to put on our Sunday best at Christmas. Here Christmas or Jól starts at 6 pm on the 24th.
    3. Item 11, while technically not untrue, it is Wildly inaccurate/borderline untrue. There is a committee, but there is no official list (I think its France that has that not sure). The role of the committee is to ensure the names selected, conform, have, or can be adapted to Icelandic grammar, and that the name is appropriate for the babe's gender, (ya can't name a boy Lucy or a girl John). This committee has also been abolished and reestablished several times through out the decades. lets jus say its far more complicated than its made out to be in the video.
    4. Using average numbers for salary's is not a good metric, the gap between the lowest income here, and the highest is quite large, I don't have precise numbers but the lowest income house holds are paying between 1/2 and 3/4 of the monthly income towards rent at the moment.
    5. No, No, the Shark is NOT a typical food, it is a Traditional food, that is only usually eaten during Þorri, which is a period of winter typically from the last week of Jan to the Last week of Feb. WE do NOT eat this like candy all year round. (Þorri is the forth month of winter according to our old calendar and starts at the first new moon after the winter solstice between 19-25th Jan in the modern calendar)
    6. The Eating of the Puffing heart may be some weird shite the Vestman Islanders get up to, but it is not a nation wide practice ,it is also mostly the Vestman islanders that eat Puffin. (The Vestman Islands are a Group of Islands just south of the mainland its largest island has the largest non-mainland town in the country and the locals are a bit weird even for Icelandrs :). )
    7. We do have ants in Iceland, 4 different types live indoors, where there is heat and humidity, 1 lives out doors
    8. Not untrue, but inaccurate, and slowly changing, in the early '80s 2/3's of roads here were un-paved (gravel surfaced), to day that ratio has almost reversed
    9. Item 67 is pure BS people do not leave infants and/or babies out side Restaurants, shops, and cafes, in strollers period. We do, however put them in proper full baby carriages out on our verandas, balconies, and out side the back door, at home in any weathers. Supermarkets and many restaurants have play areas, where parents may let their kids stay while they shop, (in the case of supermarkets), or in the case of restaurant play areas, kids will go there after they have finished eating.
    10. the Item about the Sheap's Head Is misleading, the dish that is depicted is! Stew and has no relation to the Shapes Head dish or Svið. The Brains are removed but nothing else is, the skin is left on, and the hair is removed by burning it, or singing it off, in fact the name Svið roughly translates as Singed.
    11. Regarding The Mammals, only the Arctic Fox is Indigenous to the island, the Reindeers were imported in the 18th century, in 4 groups, only 1 of which survived to become todays population, the mice and rats made there own way on ships, through the ages, (and no they are not a serious problem). The Mink was inadvertently introduced to the country when some of them escaped mink farms in the 70s and 80s, there were also escapees from fox farms, but they did not survive in the wild, (Foxes and Mink were farmed for fur)
    12. Not an inaccuracy or error, but just a comment on the Mosquito, it is true that there are none in Iceland but the conditions for it to survive here do exist, its just that it hasn't made landfall here yet, (remember there are Mosquitos in Alaska where the ambient temperatures get much lower than in Iceland)
    13. And lastly, it is TOTALLY TRUE, we do love our Pylsur (Hot Dogs), and there is indeed, a street vendor in Reykjavik Called Bæjarins Bestu (The Towns Best), its been there since 1937, Bill Clinton did indeed stop by there for a Hot Dog when he visited Reykjavik, after he left office, and the Dog he ordered is now a set menu Item called the, you guessed it, the Bill Clinton
Thank you for the video. Thordur Jonsson

Don´t think rats and mice are a problem, afterall they got minks and they love rats and mice. I also imagine rats are smart enough to stay away from humans in a place like Iceland.

    • @olivinator

absolutely true, especially with how many of us have cats or dogs as pets. places that are left deserted for long periods of time and only visited for brief moments do end up having rats or mice scurrying around them, but i haven't seen a mouse nor a rat in any home, not even a summer home, in my 30 years of living here.

The naming of children and marriage is a big deal in Iceland because they take genealogy very seriously because of inbreeding they actually have a special part of the government dedicated to it ! They even have times that they pay men to come and marry their women and make children I know that it sounds like a dream job or situation but I don't know all of the details but it is interesting for a young man!

the 6 is debatable because some will say that the first name of the island was thole but like i said debatable. 11 yes but there is a committee that controls the names and approves or declines names. 25. why???? funny story iceland exports alot of fish to spain poland and so on so on iceland made a traite deal with i think poland or russia " you get fish and we vodka and prins polo(chocolate candy) and thats how átvr(áfengis-tóbakverslun ríkisins= alcohol and tobacco store of iceland) was made iceland was forced to get the vodka. 29 fun fact when the icelandic horse goes to out side of iceland compete in world completions he can't never come back to Iceland.

Hi Nate, nice videos as always!!!. In the video " Why America sucks at everything" you said: " I might have to watch a few other videos to get my spirit back up again", so, I have a proposition: Have you ever heard of Dimash Qudaibergen?, if you have, he is great, isn't he?, but if you haven't heard of him, you should react to him. He is the most wonderful singer of all time, trust me, he will lift your spirit!!!. Here is the link and with this song you will just scratch the surface ua-cam.com/video/W29zEuZVaxs/v-deo.html

Yes Iceland! lol - come to the land of utmost boredom. Veriđ velkomin! =)
Edit: we had severe alcohol problems up until the 2000s or so - also due to the long night. But actually that has changed. Todays younger people do not drink themselves dead anymore. Suicide and depression is still fairly high.
traditional houses look cute but are damp and not at all comfortable.
As for the names, it is true. Only approved names are possible. If you are a foreigner having citizenship - and you want to name your child .. WE get to name it .. also, it will lose its surname. you are welcome. We do not have hereditary surnames .. and the first names are all culturally significant. You must name your child an approved Icelandic name do "preserve" our culture. (just so its obvious: My mothers name is Eyja - and i am Eyjas daughter : Eyjasdóttir)

Some of what the video is telling you is false. Iceland is south of the northern arctic circle. You have to be north of it to see the midnight sun or have a polar night. You have some bright night in the summer and some dim days in winter, but never real midnight sun or a real polar night.
The "great" Geysir is nothing more than a hot spring now. I doesn't erupt anymore. What you saw in the video is most probably the Strokkur 50 metres (160 ft) to the south. Which only erupts up to 40 metres (130 ft) high.

Of course there is bright "daylight" everywhere in Iceland around midnight for weeks in the summer. Here in Reykjavík today June 29. it will be bright most of the night. The Artic circle goes through Grímsey, an island short distance north of the mainland of Iceland.

Expensive, no. Think twice, there are sheep and fish. Flour, Rice, potatoes, other meat than sheep, sugar, coffee, choclate and many other Things they have to import, even wood. They have none of These on the Isle. Many industries we have on the continent, in iceland do not exist. So import it, expensive.
