They really knocked it out of the park with these Pro Mod Series at Charvel, you get a lot of guitar for your money. Proper Duncans (not some "designed by" cheapo pickups), coil-split, proper Korean OFR-1000 Series, carbon fiber rods for better neck stabillity (to keep that in perspective: Gibsons & PRSs who go for 4 grand don´t have these!), compound radius fingerboards, the trusrod wheel on the neck pickup is something every guitar should have and I really like that the tone knob can be de-activated. The only thing I don´t like, is the Fender style neck-joint with this big block. The DK24 models have a really nice, ergonomically shaped neck heel, I would like this on the San Dimas & So Cal also.

Like the poster said, the in between sounds are similar to the middle sound of a tele.
1/4 saw neck, rolled fret edges, top mount floyd (preference and less wood routed out = more sustain) there's a reason why fender chose to advertise "made in usa/made in japan" and not "made in mexico"
Question: How long have you been doing that kind of stringing on your guitars with floating bridge? The ball end at the tuners? Does it leave dents on the tuning heads?
Pretty much since my first guitar with a Floyd Rose in the late 90s. It's handy for any string breakages at the saddle, can unwind a bit and string up again. That's especially handy live. Generally it makes resting with a floyd a little quicker IMO, never had any issues with tuning posts being damaged.
mastertheguitar I see. Thanks a lot for this info. I might try that on my next stringing. I use 9 gauge ernie ball slinky's. What's yours? I see the ball ends have different colors.
I use 10 gauge D'Addario NYXLs. It's the first time I've had them on a floyd guitar so I'm intrigued to see how long they last with the whammy abuse ;)
so that´s a good review! gives me a good impression and a lot of information about the guitar, which I´m planning to buy! except for the info: what´s the weight of the guitar? does it feel comfortable to play?
Thanks man! The guitar is very comfortable to play, I personally love the neck profile and feel. Regarding weight, mine weighs in around 3.9 kg/8.6 lbs
Thanks for your quick response! Well, that´s surprisingly heavy and a minor to me, since I bought a Jackson Adrian Smith Model recently, the maple neck and fretboard feels good, but the weight of 4 kg gives me a quite uneasy feeling and is a torture to your shoulders, if you have to play for several hours! Of course, that´s why I never play my Gibson Les Paul Custom (4.6 kg) live. My Fender Malmsteen Signature is the reference here, also made of alder body and maple neck, but with just 3.45 kg just phantastic to handle! My "Frankenstein" EVH red stripes has the same weight and is doing it´s job. My idea is just to buy a guitar versatile enough to cover all that stuff. Thanks to your review, I got the impression, the Charvel could be the one!
Have you had any problems adjusting the truss rod? I just put together one of these guitars and the truss rod wheel at the heel of the neck is totally snug against the wood and won't allow me to get the neck completely straight.
Just bought one.Dont care for the neck pick-up. What's a good pick-up with a good melody sound.I love the Evo but it's a Dimarzio.Like to stick with the 80's sound and keep the Duncans.Someone help me out.
Anybody know where I can get a wiring diagram for this guitar. I have one that was rewired incorrectly by Sims Custom Guitars in Chattanooga TN when it was sent there for a paint job. Charvel won't help me because I'm not a dealer. Does Seymour Duncan have anything I can use to restore the wiring to original?
The specs list both the Pro Mod San Dimas and So Cal as having same compound 12-16” radius. I own both San Dimas and So Cal pro mods and the radii feel the same BUT the So Cal neck is slightly wider with a squarer shoulder almost like a D shape.
Anyone knows how he does the squeal at exactly 1m36 ? I see him pulling off the G string right before but where does he get the harmonic ? Same string or on B string and what fret ? Any tip on that would be appreciated. I just started learning this kind of stuff and it's so much fun but I'm still struggling. Thanks!
I got one of these for my birthday a couple years ago. I really like it but I am not used to playing a guitar shaped like this. I am used to sitting down with a V shape and propping it up on my knee. To play this Charvel I have to stand up. It sounds great and the neck feels awesome. I don't think I like the low profile floyd though.
mastertheguitar so yes Bill & Ted 😉 I can totally see those two excellent dudes using Charvel San Dimas guitars in the upcoming movie, and I might have to get myself one after I really learn how to play
I think so, yeah. It’s not as high quality as a top range Floyd but does its job well enough. My only concern would be the trem’s longevity after years of abuse ;)
Great demo, I'm thinking about getting either this or the Hardtail version. I've had a few bad experiences with Floyds before, so I'm a bit skeptical about it, what's your opinion? Also love your accent!
Thanks man! So far I've been pretty happy with it, the arm collar doesn't come loose every 3 seconds like previous floyds I've had. What bad experiences did you have with other floyds?
I had a Schecter Omen 6 Diamond Extreme with a Floyd Rose and it "deadened" the tone, so to speak. Bad harmonics, no "screaming", and a very dull tone. It came out of tune frequently and based on what I researched I couldn't do much other than go and get a new Floyd Rose Original. At that point I just sold the guitar because it was too much trouble. So what I'm asking is this, does the FR on the Charvel affect the tone in any way? And does it have any tuning stability issues? Is the action affected? Any disadvantages? I'm pretty happy with the vintage tremolo on my strat nowadays, and a Floyd Rose would be a nice upgrade to that, especially since I'm interested in learning some Floyd stuff like Guthrie Govan, but only if it's not detrimental to the overall performance of the guitar. I'm also a bit skeptical about the locking nut, since it might get in the way of my playing sometimes.
Ah gotcha! I would guess the Omen had a licensed Floyd equipped so might explain the 'dead' feel of it. The FR on the Charvel isn't licensed but it's not a top range Floyd either. IIRC it's a Floyd made by Ping. The guitar sounds great with it though, has a nice bite and screams when required. Suits this guitar and the intended 'rawk' vibe but I wonder if it would be maybe too bright on something else. Tricky to say. Tuning stability is great and action is set, like other Floyds, by the height of the bridge. I do wonder about general wear and tear and how it'll fare over the years. Will just need to keep on abusing it and see ;) I'm the same in that the guitars I've been playing for the last 9 years have all had strat style bridges, I got the Charvel to tap into that 80s rock vibe for upcoming videos/lessons etc. I used to play Floyd equipped Ibanez guitars so adjusting didn't take too long and I have missed some of those cool Floyd only tricks ;) I know it's a but of a hassle but if the locking nut is an issue you could always swap the neck, get locking tuners and keep the Floyd (much like Guthrie's current sig Charvel) , but you might lose a little of the typical Floyd performance as the string doesn't stop at the nut.
I´ve got the same guitar...sounds good, but could be better made...the volume pot is wrong placed, making uncomfortable to get the pickup selector...when you take up the pot it hits the whammy bar...it´s very heavy....only 22 frets...not the better designed superstrat at all
Volume pot and selector location can be such a personal preference, I've never had a problem with my San Dimas, So Cal, Strat or Suhrs (even when I had a Les Paul I wasn't bothered) but appreciate it can annoy some. FTR my San Dimas whammy bar clears the pulled pot fine, has about a 2mm clearance, a bent bar or bridge setup for a greater up pull would cause it to hit though. I agree it is a weighty beast though I think for the budget its a fantastic guitar and for the general market appeal does the job, personal preferences/tweaks are what custom shops are for :)
I'm thinking about getting one of these...but the only thing that has stopped me is that it's Mexican made....does it feel any cheaper because it's a Mexican made guitar? Any qualms at all with it? Fantastic demo but the way. I can't find many good demos on UA-cam nowadays...
For me no, it feels really great to play. Of course as I mentioned there are some minor cosmetic flaws in the routing you wouldn't see in a higher end guitar and only time will tell how the trem lasts but I have to say it's a great guitar for the $$$. Never judge an instrument on where it was built, if you can, play it and make up your own mind.
mastertheguitar Gotcha! I plan on getting one of these as plenty of people have told me (like you) that they're fantastic axes. Thank you very much for your response! It helps a lot and I really appreciate it!

Will just need to keep on abusing it and see ;)
I'm the same in that the guitars I've been playing for the last 9 years have all had strat style bridges, I got the Charvel to tap into that 80s rock vibe for upcoming videos/lessons etc. I used to play Floyd equipped Ibanez guitars so adjusting didn't take too long and I have missed some of those cool Floyd only tricks ;)
I know it's a but of a hassle but if the locking nut is an issue you could always swap the neck, get locking tuners and keep the Floyd (much like Guthrie's current sig Charvel) , but you might lose a little of the typical Floyd performance as the string doesn't stop at the nut.
B e a u tiful guitar.
@@mastertheguitar I thought it was alder body
It helps a lot and I really appreciate it!
wiring ?? thanks :)
Pickup options? They are covered in the video :)
