Larry Bird was a basketball genius and that was enough.

That narrative is a myth imo. Larry was PLENTY athletic. He didn’t jump real high for flashy dunks but his dunks were respectable & he out rebounded other greats regularly. He was also plenty quick until his back bothered him, and even then he STILL embarrassed other players !
Personally I think Larry benefitted by being labeled “unathletic” bcuz he surprised a LOT of ppl on the court. Nobody expected anything out of him.

@@irishgrl his rebounding really was from his great instance and other worldly hands, and he embarrassed players because he was always a step ahead. I wouldn’t call him quick but he was deceptively quick. But I love Larry

Thank you for posting this! A great display of Bird's versatility = bank shots, left handed shots, 3 point shots, fade away jumpers and yes a few dunks! Look at the defense Larry played = steals and blocked shots and diving after a loose ball in an all star game. He was always hustling out there and made some great passes and made it look easy feeding the post and any player that was open = even a pass to Laimbeer! His tip rebound-pass to Gervin is a classic display of his court vision. Add to that his size and rebounding tenacity and desire to win, for me he was the best all around player I have ever seen. His skills displayed a true dedication to the game and remember he is playing in these games against the best players in the world.

To me the craziest part of about Larry Bird in the All Star games is that he really didn’t do anything special, he took a step back and filled in the gaps.

I love watching his style of play. He adds to the players around him while being totally confident in himself.

Yes, I watched that 85 all star game and the blood was literally flowing out of Bird's nose. They could not get his nose to stop bleeding and the East coach had to call a timeout to get Bird out of the game - he was willing to keep playing. Then you could see Bird on the bench with an ice pack on the back of his neck and they used a bucket to catch the blood still dripping out.
