    Fascinating video. I got laughing so hard at your casual mention of the summit rock that I had to pause it for a couple of minutes! Because it's the 100 year anniversary, I recently purchased one of John Noel's postcards so it was wonderful to hear you discuss Noel and the history of the postcard. Well, was there room for 4 cells in that battery box? The D cell has only 1.5 volts per. Sinclair said it was a 6-volt motor. The typical 35mm film camera needs a minimum of 30 watts, more than you could get out of D cells. The mystery continues.

    • @jake_norton
      @jake_norton  8 місяців тому +1

      Stuart, great to hear from you! The expedition battery LEGEND! I'm not entirely sure to be honest. The battery looks similar to a modern D-cell in size, but maybe a bit bigger. There is no writing or anything on the ones I found, so I'm unsure. Was the 6-volt motor from 1922, or 1924? I know Noel worked with Sinclair after 1922 to develop a better motor and battery system, as it sounds like the '22 system was underpowered, batteries exhausted too quickly. There's an ad from post-24 where he raves about the 1924 batteries, how long they lasted, etc.

    Fact, 1924 is a year written in stone, Did Mallory & Irvine summit Mount Everest. Artefacts from 1921 22 & 24 are all related to Mallory & Irvine's attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest, every item are priceless artefacts. We too have all the data from that epic 1999 search finding Mallory & his personnel artefacts, and now the location of Sandy Irvine's partial remains. Without doubt Mount Everest is, Mallory & Irvine's Mountain.

    I remember reading about an Everest Summit... don't remember the name of mountaineer at the moment who did the climb... to gather rocks for scientific analysis of summit rocks.
    My question is that if the rock you have could be compared to those retrived for the analysis, and if they matched, would that help establish whether Malloy's came from summit?
    I know this might be simplistic, and may have already been done so just a thought. 🤷‍♀️

    Do you know what happened to the 2nd glove ? Also is it true the 1999 team took pieces of Mallory’s rope that was tied around him as a souvenir ?

    • @jake_norton
      @jake_norton  8 місяців тому

      Hi Ryan, I've answered about the glove in the past, but will do so again. I don't remember a second glove, only one. I think David Roberts, who wrote Conrad's book, was mistaken. A great climber and writer, David was not always thorough on all the details in his account of 1999. But, anything can be made into a conspiracy, right? As for your rope question, I don't know why I'm even bothering to answer, but no, that's not true. None of us were up there souvenir hunting, despite that being a fun narrative to tell. Hope this helps, and thanks.

    Jake hi from Canmore, Alberta, not too far apart 15 hr drive. However we share the worlds best playground in our backyards. I really should do some climbing in CO, have enjoyed MT and WY though.
    Think you are being far too hard on yourself re the "worlds worst UA-camr" comment. I appreciate that you post when you have quality content or comment not just for the sake of racking up UA-cam placement. This posting is a perfect example obviously I was aware there was film footage of the early Everest attempt taken by John Noel 1922. But knew nothing beyond the photo of him hunched behind that huge aluminum box on massive wood tripods. Photo from "Ghosts Of Everest" awesome book, (Hemmleb, Larry Johnson, Eric Simonson). Now I know the whole story amazingly ingenious for the time. All that from you taking the time to pick of a piece of detritus from poking out of the glacier. Then doing the deep dive so many years later for our benefit.
    Thanks for showing us articles in your office, that split O2 cylinder looks interesting not seen that before?. O2 cylinders and different delivery systems really interest me US vs Russian vs Chinese for example. Do you have preference of O2 delivery set ?.
    Personally I prefer quality content over quantity content this posting is quality.
    Thanks for this take care.

    The Mallory-Irvine mystery has fascinated me like no other. Does it all come down to the Chinese removing Irvine's body from the mountain to conceal evidence that would change Everest history ? I know that is just a theory. In your opinion Jake, is it safe to say that Sandy Irvine's body is no longer on the mountain ? Thanks Jake for doing all the leg work for us armchair mountaineers. And do you think there will be any major reveal about the 1924 expedition, considering it is the 100th anniversary of Mallory and Irvine's successful summit of Everest. Sure wish they could have made it back down. I know you have been asked these questions numerous times so for that I apologize.

    • @rg3412
      @rg3412 8 місяців тому

      If Irvine’s body had been removed from the mountain, why would those who spread that rumor have gone through the trouble of setting up an expensive expedition to try to find him in 2019? During which they filmed the critical location with a high altitude drone and never released the footage?

    • @jake_norton
      @jake_norton  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, @robertmartin8565 , and glad you've appreciated all I've shared out here. And, don't hesitate to ask more questions - I'll do my best to answer! On Irvine's body, I really don''t know what to believe. There's a lot of whispers, but I've yet to hear anything definitive aside from second or third party accounts. So, I don't know to be honest, but it does sadly feel like there's enough perhaps of those accounts to indicate a strong possibility Irvine was removed from the mountain. Very sad if true, and perhaps sadder if that removal lost or destroyed any evidence he might have had on him. On the one hand, I would be OK with the story remaining forever a mystery, but not ok with that outcome if it was due to the Chinese trying to cover up something.
      As for any major reveal, I could certainly be wrong, but so far as I know there is no real new information out there, no discoveries that have been made. The only exception could in my mind be if the Chinese do indeed know something, and make the decision to come out with it this year. But, I'll likely not hold my breath for that!

    • @jake_norton
      @jake_norton  8 місяців тому +1

      I think that Mark did not know about the possible removal of the body until after his 2019 expedition; that info came to light as he was researching and writing the book, not beforehand. I could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

    • @rg3412
      @rg3412 8 місяців тому

      @@jake_norton did not know about the timing of the reveal. It still seems hard to believe the Chinese would go through the trouble of getting rid of Irvine’s body. I would imagine it would have to be chiseled out of a mix or ice and rocks. Almost certainly this would mean desecrating the body. For what purpose? Preserve their original claim to the first North Ridge ascent (attempt)? If it’s true it’s a rather callous act and surely they would know History would not look upon them with great regard…

      No, we weren't looking for rocks. I know MT is pretty convinced that (a) we should have been, which may be true, and also (b) that it would be a slam dunk to have found them, distinguish them from any of the other rocks around, etc. I'm not sure on the latter, but the simple answer is no, we were not looking for them.
