      Change the habit! Whenever this feeling arises go make and drink a cup of tea immediately (for example). Your brain will connect the new action to the old impulse

    Drink water! When you can't tell if you're hungry or not, drink some water. You might just be thirsty. Also drinking a full glass of water before you eat can help with portion control.

      Kitt Legit you're right. I learned this from an elder a few years back. Can have what ever you like as long as you drink a full glass of water (not the small glasses but the big ones) before and after you eat. It really controls your intake. Plus, my mom keeps reminding me as well... I stopped at one point because I didn't like how small the portion I was consuming lol big plate = full stomach and small plate = not full, need more, in my mind. Trying to get back into more water, had notice a little weight loss before backtracking.

      BUt drinking water before and after meals are not good for digestive system, so we need to drink hot water after every meal to loose weight!

    • @abbyrose547
      @abbyrose547 4 роки тому +5

      Shravani Kumari the accurate advice is you should drink water 30min before your food, and 90min (an hour and a half) after you finish eating. That way you don’t harm the digestion and give your body enough time to finish processing the food.

    You nailed it right here.... 07:06 ......that was me! What I do now is either chew on a piece of gum or if I'm home I brush my tongue especially all the way in the back. Drink plenty of water and the urge goes away. Right now I'm doing the 16:8 fasting and I swear I'm hardly hungry only when it gets closer to the time I'm suppose to eat. I truly forgot what hunger felt like bc I was always eating..... good luck people this stuff isn't easy.....

      Come to think of it🤔... If I wake up in the morning and brush my teeth, the hunger I was feeling since I woke disappears so I sometimes skip breakfast. This would really help with resisting the urge to eat something even when not hungry. I will sure use it and see how it goes. Thank you for this 😄

    It's not always possible to eat only when you are hungry, i mean if you at school and you do not eat when it's lunchtime because you were not hungry, But 2 hours later you are, you just can't start eating lunch in the middle of Class.
    I always thought the feeling of hunger was the same for everyone. It's like weird to see someone explain the feeling of hunger

    • @dianalove539
      @dianalove539 3 роки тому +12

      I know u wrote this 3 years ago but for anyone coming across this comment it’ll probably be helpful so... Hunger isn’t a sensation that has to be immediately filled, sometimes we have irrational fears of hunger so some people eat “just in case” they’ll be hungry later. It’s not going to kill you, and maybe even, it’d be a little beneficial. Having hunger means dealing with the little discomfort with it and that means getting a stronger more disciplined mind. Either way, when you get on to the bus, you could ask your bus driver to eat, or when you get into your car, first thing you can do is eat your lunch before returning home to prevent binge eating. It is not like you are going weeks without food, your body will be fine.

    Hello my friends! After posting my last Food For Thought (How To Lose Weight Without Dieting) I had a lot of questions about how to tell the difference between 'real' and 'fake' hunger. So I am sharing three tools that helped me learn the difference so I could stop eating when I wasn't hungry. Would love to hear your thoughts and questions down in the comments below. XO

      Hi Dani, this makes complete sense but I wonder how you make this work with a family. We try to eat as a family in the evenings but I rarely feel hungry and eat because I've cooked dinner for everyone. My kids are 11 and 14 so are old enough to decide if they are hungry but we would all end up eating separately and eating different meals if we ate only when we were hungry. Should I just let this happen? I don't want to force my kids to eat when they're not hungry. Also, if left to their own devices they are not going to cook a mea, they are going to have something on toast or cereal. It's difficult to manage.....or is this just me? Thanks in advance

    • @ainaon4608
      @ainaon4608 7 років тому

      lorraine trundell thanks, lorraine!!! I agree- it is really hard to practice this with other family members... having dinner together is the only family time we can manage but I usually feel no hunger in the dinner time. Since it relates to daily routine for each member, it is difficult to adjust. I too also appreciate if Dani can give an advice in terms of family setting practice. Thank you!!!

    • @dieselexhausted
      @dieselexhausted 4 роки тому +8

      @@02ChevyAvalanche Fortunately, you're at an age where you can develop new habits more easily than an adult can. Unfortunately, you're also at an age at which you can't as easily control what foods you're around. Usually exercise helps me control my cravings more easily. If you are able to talk to your parents openly, consider having a conversation about what foods they bring into the house and ask for guidance from your dad. I would strongly advise seeing your doctor, as well. This is definitely something you want to get control of early on. I've seen too many family members suffer and die all because of their eating habits.

    When I star eating in a day, I can not stop eating. I have such a lust for food, I constantly need to chew something and i feel sick if I don't eat till I go to sleep. That is why I practice intermittent fasting. I start eating at 7:00 in the evening and I eat non stop til 10:00 when I go to bed. Couse if I start eating in the morning I would be fat as a wardrobe. I cannot help myself, I get into agony if I don't have anything to eat, even if I feel full and can barely move. :'(

    This is honestly revolutionary and straight forward advice. I personally lost 50 lbs eating this way over only a couple of months. I hate being sweaty so exercise isn’t my cup of tea. When you said that you feel fake hunger more in your mouth than stomach that REALLY resonated with me. Because even though I have achieved this practice and have continued to maintain it for the last year - that description has allowed me to now put into words the difference between these two feelings. The only thing I would add which I think is missing from much info about the “eating only when hungry” style of nutrition/weight loss is also - portion control! If we are eating only when hungry but then eating too much at one time - it will be such a long time till we feel hungry again that it becomes easier to justify eating when not hungry. So I would recommend that people also reduce your meal size portions to about 2/3 of normal (I just do this visually). You can substitute pretty much any amount of veggies to make up for the missing amount of your main meal if it makes you feel better mentally about the reduction in food. If you eat smaller portions, you will get hungry more frequently and therefore give yourself the opportunity and permission to indulge in the reward of food again! The biggest thing I have realized from eating this way is - there is always more food. There will always be more opportunities to eat so we don’t need to eat so much at one time. Wait until we actually feel the need - and then I promise you your food will also be 10x as satisfying and tasty than if you are just eating out of habit. :)

    Good information. I try to eat only when I'm hungry without being tied to the time of day, i.e. lunch, dinner etc. I live alone so this is easy and I find if I am truly hungry I can get to the feeling of "satisfaction" and stop at that point. I am tempted to go to "full" but I keep reminding myself my body needs fuel only to the point where it's satisfied and no more. Anything after that point is extra calories I don't need. If I'm not truly hungry and eat I don't arrive at the that feeling of being satisfied. It never happens for me. That's how I can tell the difference. Took me many years of learning that. I still struggle at times but I try.

Sometimes when my alarm goes off I just eat a banana. That is just enough to stop me from over eating later. Eating all the time is bad for your body. We are not meant to be eating all the time your digestive system never gets a break. Takes a lot of energy to digest food that’s why ppl feel amazing when fasting or imf your going your body chance to relax and get all the stuff out of your system . One big meal and then veggies fruits nuts and seeds on the side is all you need a day to feel the best

    How to stop that “mouth hunger” craving.
    1. Drink a few gulps of cold water. Identify - did I feel that cold water go into my stomach? I think most of us know that feeling it’s actually not super pleasant. If you feel it, then you might actually be hungry and should eat. If you don’t feel it, don’t eat but drink more water!
    2. Brush your teeth an tung (especially near the back).
    4. Chew gum
    5. Portion control is everything. If you are trying to loose weight - then reduce your portions at every meal to about 2/3 of what you would normally eat. This is so easy because I promise you will still be satiated after this amount. If you are over weight it is because you are eating too much - clearly (unless an underlying medical problem). This is the hardest thing to accept (I lost 50 lbs after I accepted this and followed these practices). As the weeks go on and your body adjusts, you may even be able to reduce your portions even more to about 1/2 of the original but find yourself eating more frequently through out the day due to actual hunger. This is what we want!
    6. If you are going to snack on something unhealthy - portion control! Instead of having a whole piece of cake - only have 2/3 or 1/2 of what would have been normal for you before. This works with every food. Normally eat a whole bag of chips in one sitting? Portion only 2/3 or 1/2 of that into a SEPARATE container to eat.
    7. Proteins and fats are our friends - sugar, artificial sugars, and grease are our enemies. If you eat a diet high in the enemy foods your hunger may feel debilitating. I personally feel sick, nauseous and headachy. So much so you will eat all the time to avoid this. At the point, I usually only experience that type of debilitating hunger during and after a vacation where I have eaten out constantly (I normally eat primarily home-made food). I don’t know how it works but it does. When you eat a friendly food diet instead - your hunger will come on much more slowly, not feel so bad, and be much more manageable if you can’t eat right at this moment.
    8. Always carry ONE healthy emergency snack on you at all times (in your purse, bag, or car). I usually have a mandarin orange, because it is enough to get me through the next 30 mins to 1 hour when I need it without feeling hungry if I can’t eat a meal right away. And oranges are amazingly transportable.
    Once again I lost 50 lbs and have kept it off. I feel so free and all I had to do was listen to my body. :) I wish someone had spelled this out to me at an earlier age.

    Wow. Everything said is so straightforward but so insightful. It wasn’t until you said it that it hit me that I let myself believe that just because my mouth wants to eat something doesn’t NOT mean I’m hungry and that I don’t need to indulge that feeling.
    It’s my brain saying it wants to taste things, not my body saying it actually needs food. I need to practice holding back a bit and I probably don’t need to go hungry to do this

    Thank you! That was helpful. When I get a workout in , I start feeling motivated to eat healthy. But on the days that I don't get a chance to workout, I just can't stop thinking about food. And that just leads to unhealthy choices of food. Then I start to lose the motivation.

    • @CleanandDeliciousDani
      @CleanandDeliciousDani  7 років тому +3

      I am a big believer that motivation comes from results. When we start to see progress or success we feel more motivated. Thats why a lot of people say fake it til you make it. We have to create thoughts that make us feel motivated and moving forward. The mind is a huge part of the equation.

    If you don't have much time:
    1. If you think you're hungry, but you're not really sure, you're most likely not actually hungry
    2. Learn what real hunger feels like for your body
    3. Try locating where your feeling of hunger is in your body
    However, I would recommend watching the whole video, since it's very informative and easy to understand

    Thanks for sharing this info, so there are many of us who struggle with how to control craving (eat / overeat when you are not hungry, just the lust / craving for certain food which are usually unhealthy). I find it to be helpful to eat based on my biological clock (eat before I get too hungry, then it’s much less likely tend over eat).

    Very good video as always! There is certainly a psychological aspect to eating. I have found that when my mind is occupied I tend to not eat as much. I implemented this in the real world by not eating while I am at work. I go to work with the mind set of I am here to make money not to eat, party and have a good time. I usually carry an apple and a couple spoons of peanut or almond butter for my lunch break. If I get another break during the day I have an empty glass bottle with a lid that has water in it. This trains your mind not to be a stress eater. By the time I get off work I am actually really physically hungry so I try to have some thing that is both healthy and quick to prepare at home so I don't just start grabbing junk food when I walk in the door. I call this my work place diet.

  • @Kpup

    thank you so much for this series. I have lost 75 pounds, and my body seems to have settled about 20-30 lbs heavier than that. I'd like to lose at least 10-15 of those, but after years of Weight Watchers, and before that eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it, I feel like my brain doesn't understand how to just eat normally. This video is very helpful, I really want to teach myself to eat intuitively and I'm hoping that will lead to me losing 10-15 pounds and getting to a weight I'm comfortable with but isn't hard to maintain.

    • @CleanandDeliciousDani
      @CleanandDeliciousDani  7 років тому +3

      I found for myself, just letting go of the need to lose weight and refocusing on nourishment and learning how to handle emotions without food gave me the break I needed to relax a bit. And then in that space.... the weight loss became more of the side effect then the main focus. Just a thought. XO

    • @Kpup
      @Kpup 7 років тому +2

      That's what I'm TRYING to do. After spending so much of my life trying to lose the weight, then maintaining, then regaining after I got married, I really want to be able to step back from that thought of "losing that last 10 pounds" but it's hard, especially when some of my clothes don't fit how I'd like them to. I've recently deleted my Weight Watchers app and for the first time in FOREVER am not allowing myself to track anything. I'm trying to eat meals that satisfy me and not allowing myself to snack between unless I'm trying ravenous.
      If you can, I'd love a video about how to STOP eating when your full. My body takes a VERY LONG TIME to tell my brain I'm full so a lot of times I'll overeat at meals.

    • @CleanandDeliciousDani
      @CleanandDeliciousDani  7 років тому +2

      I get it. It's a practice for sure. Quick thoughts on stop eating when your full.... 1. SLOW down so your body has time to register. I like playing games like chew each bite 25x OR be the last one at the table to finish. 2. Notice - why you want to keep eating when you are full. Literally, the next time you notice you are full and want to keep eating, just notice what your brain tells you. The story your brain is running may be creating an emotion that is driving the desire to eat. BUT this can also simply be a matter of habit. Lots of exploring to do. xo

    I was hoping for some suggestions to deal with the "Mouth hunger". I am 53 and have had many years of eating to self sooth. I find it a compulsion that is difficult to fight even though I am now often aware that it is not true hunger.

    • @CleanandDeliciousDani
      @CleanandDeliciousDani  7 років тому +4

      Dolly, to really eliminate mouth hunger you need to identify the emotion you are looking to self soothe and then practice ways of caring for that emotion (soothe that emotion) without using food. This is hard to do at the beginning because it requires a lot of conscious awareness. But with practice you can create a new habit.
      What is it that you are always trying to soothe yourself from?

      Awe, Dolly. I'm sure thats super tough. But do know, learning to handle and mange your emotions is the real work here. Dealing with mouth hunger will be a constant struggle if you can't get behind it to the real cause. Make sense?

    I used to stress eat and what I would do is make myself some tea. Just the ritual of making the tea...taking that time to pause, breathe, think, decreased the stress immensely. Then I would sip my tea slowly and enjoy it. I use flavored black tea (like vanilla caramel or vanilla chai) which is zero calorie so I get all the flavor too which cuts off my chocolate cravings as well. Win win win!!
    In a pinch when I can't make tea, I chew gum. There's a theory that the act of chewing caises the body to calm down so gum makes me perform that act without all the calories.

    This was such a great video! Most--if not all--of the information you mentioned I already knew, but it was so nice to hear it from someone else. Sometimes telling yourself just isn't enough, especially when it's constant.
    I struggle with this on a daily basis, especially if I don't have work or school for the entire day. My mind begins to wander and I start to wander into the kitchen. That's where I start mindless snacking, which can lead to binging (I already messed up today, so why not keep going?). It's an extremely toxic and self-deprecating circle because regret and guilt ALWAYS follow. Even after I finish my dinner, I always crave that extra little something. I'm always thinking about food cravings and what I should eat for the next meal. You're so right in that I should start directing that energy somewhere else!
