  • British man Adam Walker is accompanied by a pod of dolphins on his quest to conquer the Oceans7! The Dolphins stayed with Adam for more than an hour and swam around him playfully getting close enough for Adam to touch. A fantastic experience for all involved.
    Swim coach Adam Walker is swimming the hardest 7 oceans in the world the Oceans Seven in aid of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation charity (www.justgiving..... Adam is set to be the first British person to complete the Oceans Seven and only four people in the world have completed it so far! With the English Channel, Gibraltar Straits, Catalina Channel, Molokai Strait, Tsugaru Strait and now the Cook Strait under his belt, Adams final swim of the seven takes place this August in the Irish Sea. Hi all thanks for your comments, I have been recovering from the swim so haven't had chance to reply. Just so everyone is 100% clear a pod of dolphins came out of nowhere a few hours into the swim. Shortly after (approx 10 mins) I happened to look down and saw a shark a few metres underneath me (which is why it doesn't show on camera). Sharks have been present on 2 other occasions during my Oceans7 challenge - Molokai straits in Hawaii and Tsugaru channel in Japan and in each case I tried not to panic as I have an objective to successfully swim across. Getting stressed won't help me achieve my goal and I have trained to stay calm.
    I love my sport I know its not for everyone and I know the dangers, however I choose to do it for whale and dolphin conservation to raise awareness and much needed funds. I can't say whether the dolphins came as a pod to my aid as they can't speak to me, however I can say that after a few minutes the shark disappeared and the dolphins stayed with me for another 50 mins which was an amazing experience. The video went out to show friends and family and it went viral. I am overwhelmed with all the kind comments and support I have received and I really hope it helps to make a real difference for the charity.
    :)
    Thank you
    Adam

    Dolphins have been recorded for years - decades, even extending into centuries [Greek legends even] - as protecting human beings while in the water. Everything from saving humans from drowning to defending against shark attacks. Pelorus Jack and other dolphins have been credited with guiding ships through dangerous areas.
    It's been said they know the difference between play and a serious situation.
    And they are a LOT smarter than you would give them credit for. They're one of the FEW non human species that is self aware, more than dogs can say.

    i think the dolphins can sense something in us that we havnt discovered yet, they seem to just know things with out an explanation. i bet they could feel the gratitude of the man and it feels good to them. sounds supernatural but it makes sense of alot of dolphin and human encounters. plus its not that hard to believe when animals sense fear and dogs can sense pregnancy, maybe dolphins can sense a range of things in humans. they are incredibly smart after all. its pretty clear they have humane feelings otherwise they wouldnt keep helping us with no reason to, if anything they mostly see humans trying to catch them to sell, so they must sense goodness in the person they are saving hence the reason they are doing it.

    We need to start acting responsibly towards our planet Earth and to start protecting all species. Dolphins are our best animal companions and we must embrace them in a most tender caring way. The whales, dolphins, seals, sharks... are being killed for profit. The pink Amazon river dolphin, the Ganges river dolphin and many other species of dolphins are threatened with extinction. Great video, great dolphin encounter indeed, thanks for sharing.

      @margretrosenberg420 10 років тому +4

      Yes, Jd Ck, I think you're right about the dolphins. I doubt that they attracted the shark, though. Sharks are, quite reasonably, afraid of dolphins.

    • @jameswolfe3611
      @jameswolfe3611 10 років тому

      Conundrum Yes sharks are more intelligent than most give credit for. But then I've found most humans are stupider - not yourself - than people would like to believe.
      The thing is, is that there is no proof that there's a shark even there to begin with. They merely say "shark" due to the region in which he is swimming I am more than willing to bet. And even if the shark had been there originally it would have skirted out of the area not long after the dolphins arrived - unless really hungry - to avoid a fight. Dolphins have killed sharks after all.

    Once when I was surfing in Mission Beach, San Diego, I noticed a pod of dolphins in the distance and paddled to get close to them. When I did, they simply swam around and jumped here and there, completely unafraid that I was floating right there on my board beside them. They are truly amazing creatures, and feel blessed to have interacted with them so closely both in the wild and in a man-made space

    I for one, believe him. He could have easily just said he got to swim with dolphins for an hour and that alone would be super cool! He's calm because he's doing something that requires a lot of concentration. If he's not in any immediate danger that he can see(thanks to the dolphins) he's going to keep going because he has a goal. As for the people on the boat, this is only a 2 minute video. We didn't see what they were talking about for the whole hour they were there.

    Just so people understand what happened here.
    1.# All sharks pull their victims from below so you can't see them. They always attack from the bottom. It's not like the movies where you see their fins popped out of the water while it swims towards you. They breath through their gills, so they never have to come up for air. I think some of you idiots mistake them for whales.
    #2. Only the swimmer saw the shark, no one on the boat saw it, so they had no idea what was going on. They just thought it was a friendly interaction with dolphins.
    #3. Every diver and wild swimmer is taught that the worst thing to do when you see a shark is to panic, yell/scream, or make a frantic dog paddles trying to swim away. This will make the shark go for the kill , rather than circle you which they do for a while before they move in. You calmly swim to the boat and get out. Still, going for the boat, even calmly may not work. The shark could attack. It's still risky, but he would have had no choice but to do that if the dolphins were not there. But they were. When the man realized he was surrounded by dolphins he knew not to try to get away, just keep swimming until the shark leaves. That's exactly what he did. Then he got into the boat.
    I hope you all learned something today.

  • @higherthanscream
    @higherthanscream 10 років тому

    This is so that people learn about how these things work as everyone is questioning about why there are no sharks attacking. Normally when swimmers are swimming long distances in the ocean, the boats that accompany them have a device that creates a high frequency electromagnetic field. Sharks are known to have electroreceptors (most aquatic animals have it) that detect electromagnetic fields up to very high frequency however after a certain frequency the field becomes so powerful that sharks experience a very strong force (their head hurts). Which is why they don't come near the boat, hence the swimmer. As for aquatic animals such as dolphins, they don't eat people. Sure they can bit but this is highly unlikely. Secondly, a lot of aquatic life in ocean lies somewhat lower than the surfs. So it is very unlikely for any sea life to come and attack the person swimming.
    P.S: For those of who think this is fake, there have been several people who have swam through oceans such as Benolt Lecomte.

    Fantastic footage, what a great experience to have had. I believe that is the 'only' way anyone should ever swim with dolphins- in their domain.

    Found out that Adam swam in a much more higher lifted head position than I believe during the open water swimming, probably due to the wave. But it looks no so smooth then. Swimming with dolphin experience is great.

    Regardless of the presence of sharks (or lack of), I find that dolphins swimming alongside a human swimmer to keep him company is fascinating... (Or what's the reason behind this? They also do this with boats, surfers, canoes...)

    Dolphins are known to protect humans from sharks, not only humans but other fish in the seas that are in danger.

      That does not make any sense, humans maybe but other species? So they hate sharks? Weird considering dolphins are predators too and kill other fish and mammals to survive, so do sharks.
