I've been trying to decipher the meaning of this song for a long time. Thx for this interpretation.
Actually, the first part of the song was released first time on his Soundcloud, in more electronic version, over a year ago when his cham was still with him. His life wasn't the craziest and nothing has been changing. A lot of the surrealistic meanings, associated with the dissociation, you mentioned are just right but some of them have an actual, logic meaning (ex. 'Chipping nail varnish on guitar strings' the weird sound he liked to make for his songs etc.), he often mentioned how lonely he was and that the only friend he has was his chameleon what's for 'Scaly little friends got my backup'. And first chorus put in the song has been probably originally written for losing his friend (which we could've told by other lyrics from then). The second verse was added after Caspar's death and purposely for the new album. A lot of things has been changing back then and a lot of them, unfortunately, not positively. Feeling anxious (fuzzy) due to the loss, thoughts in his head that his best friend's death was partly his fault and again all of the surrealism you noticed that were portraying his mentality. Last chorus are meant to be for chameleon, exactly how you construed it.
I just wanted to clarify some things, that I THINK may be right, for someone who's familiar with cavetown and also curious about the most accurate explanation, would be helpful. Great job btw! I'm so happy that cavie is getting more attention. (sorry for language mistakes)

I’m pretty sure they lyrics “I am not a beast I’m not a monster” to “and I’m the only one who’s got a cape” refers to how he made the decision to put casper down after seeing all the suffering he was going through and how bad his condition was getting. he’s trying to reason with himself and with those who disagree with his decision saying he isn’t a beast nor a monster because casper was on his way out and robbie wanted his pain to end. but i don’t know that’s just what I took from it
also “melt all ur art and drink the paint” could reference caspar’s “happy colors” that robbie said he would “never get to see again”

Mr. Lira people like saying that this is home is purely about being trans but I don’t believe this is the full message. I feel like it’s about feeling different from other people and just feeling comfortable being yourself. Even if other people have a hard time understanding or accepting you.

On his bandcamp he gave comments about what some of the songs were about in the description. For Pigeon he wrote “About dissociation.”
Ok so 1) I always thought this song was about a breakup because the majority of the songs off lemon Boy are about love whether it be loving someone or the aftermath of the relationship. Like Another One Of Those Days and 888 are about loving someone, It’s U is about being there for the person you love, Fools is kinda where it goes sour, and Green and Pigeon is the breakup and how it affects him. Idk this is how I’ve always viewed Pigeon and the album.
2) Casper was put down and in a video, Robin talked about how he gave Casper the best last days of his life as he could. His death wasn’t abrupt so I’m not sure if it’s about Casper of not.
3)I feel like the line “f*cking stupid head I’m gonna kill you” is trying to get across being angry at yourself like he’s calling himself a stupid head. Like just being so angry you could kill something but for no real reason. Maybe he’s mad because he feels he messed up the relationship?
4) I think the lines “I am not a beast I’m not a monster I don’t care what you say you can’t have the bad guys without a hero and I’m the only one who’s got a cape” is him angry at himself but also defending himself that he can’t be the bad guy because his intentions were good hence why he has a cape. He feels like it was his fault but he also thinks it’s not which is a really complicated emotion.
To me, if we're relating it to relationships, it sounds like someone is trying to get away from him and he turns into a misogynist/incel.
'Fucking stupid head I'm gonna kill you' sounds like hes pissed that someone would leave him hurting like that. 'Dont you wanna give me time to write another song for you?' Makes it sound like hes asking them to come back

I'm pretty sure that the "I'm not a monster" thing relates to how he felt like a murderer for putting Casper down.

Oliver S. Personally, I see it as gendee disphoria. I don't know if he has it or has a friend with it but it really, really seems like that. Plus a few of his songs seem to be about it. For example, Disphoric (no brainer), Ghost Boys, and a few others I forgot the name to. I mostly think it's about gender disphoria because of "I'll cut my hair," "I'll hide my chest," "Get aload of this monster, he doesn't know how to communicated, his mind is in a different place, will everybody please give him a little bit of space? Get a load of this train wreck. His hairs a mess and he doesn't know who he is yet, but little do we know the stars, welcome him with open arms." All of this is coming from someone with gender disphoria too.

as someone who struggles with dissociation it was very clear to me that pigeon was about that the first time i heard it, for some reason i assumed it was common knowledge what it was about. robin’s lyrics are so specific and visual that it emulates how when struggling with dissociation one focuses on small details around them or in their life to try to stay grounded with reality. i hadn’t thought about the colors at all though, i wonder what the intention of them was. i really do appreciate robin’s music because it would extremely difficult to know the specific meaning of each lyric because he really puts his whole soul into his work, it is weirdly comforting to me that his songs mean so much to him and his experiences uniquely.

This song is amazing because you can interpret it in so many ways that you make it your own. The lyrics seem so open and loosely tied (in the best way possible - I adore this song) in a way that allows the listener to associate nearly every line with their own experiences. The song itself becomes a whole different song for everyone. Listen through it and think about dissociation. Relate the words to a couple speaking to each other back and forth through the realms of life and death. I even found ways to relate this song to gentrification in urban cities. By all means, this does not mean the song doesn’t have a real intended meaning. What I’m saying is that songs like these allow for anyone to think creatively to come up with a different solution for every person. It inspires creative thinking and helps the listener better connect to every verse as if they wrote the song themselves. Much love and respect for Robbie. This song is beautiful. 😊😊❤️❤️

Dissociation does not lead to dissociative identity disorder (DID) DID is caused by long term or repeated amounts of trauma in the ages before about 8. dissosciation usually (I've never seen it not happen) occur in DID but DID doesnt usually occur in people who experience dissosciation.

Casper had cancer, Robbie had to make the decision to put him down. The line isn’t “fucking stupid head” it’s “fucking stupid and I’m gonna kill you.” My understanding of the song is that it’s about the cognitive dissonance created by killing something you love (which leads to dissociation to alleviate some of that discomfort), it’s really difficult to justify a decision like that even if you know it’s for the best. That’s what he’s talking about with the line “can’t have the bad guys with a hero and I’m the only one who has a cape,” he knows he’s doing a good thing by putting Casper out of his suffering, but overall he still feels terrible about it
When you started talking about dissociation it explained a lot for myself. I have felt it before and never knew why I felt it and never heard anything about until now.

As someone who suffers from episodes of dissociation/depersonalization I can definitely connect with many of the lyrics in Pigeon. Most prominently the surreal aspects and “feeling pretty fake when i wake up” that lyric was a huge indication of dissociation. When you get those episodes its as if you aren’t yourself, like you are playing a game about yourself. You’re observing but you are not fully there. Now I’m not saying out of body, thats typically very different. You don’t literally see yourself in 3rd pov but it feels like it. Thats why its so frightening. Its like you’re living someone else’s life.
There is two versions of this song. The first came out in 201(5?), it was of a very different quality, but still had the same lyrics, and the second is the one we all know and love. It was written before Casper died.
I loved this video and your perspective of the song, thanks for giving cavetown a try.
