  • After making paracord bracelets and watching various videos, and reading comments, people have asked how much cord do they need to make a particular bracelet.
    I came up with these math formulas to make the Solomon's bar. The Caterpillar feet braid. The Oak spike sinnet, & the Tire tread bar.
    These formulas are for the length of the bracelet, including the side release buckle (3/8).
    Hopefully this will save you from using too much cord, which results in excessive waste.
    If you want any other formulas for other types of bracelets, please suggest in the comment box below.

    This worked great!!!! Totally reduced my amount of waste cord! I now only trim 1" to 2" of excess cord!!! Thank you for posting this!

    Thank you for taking the time to do this video. No formula is perfect for everyone, as you mentioned, but this is a great starting point. Hope Stormy's collar has a easy release on it. If not, it could be fatal. I read about one person who thought making the collar loose would solve the problem. However, her cat manged to get the collar caught between the upper and lower jaw and the cat choked to death. Don't let anything like that happen to Stormy.

    You can also use your scraps for core cords (the parts that run between buckles that the other cords wrap around). The ones around 16 inches can be doubled for a two cord core, the 8 inch or so can be melted to the same/diff. color to make a two-cord core, etc, on top of making fishing lures, zipper pulls, tiny keychains, parabuddies, etc.

    Wow, can't wait to test these formulas out. The Tire Tread in JD's book p. 112 , he says to use two 7 foot lengths for a 7.5 inch bracelet. That would only fit a 7 inch wrist, according to a chart I found.Your formula for a 7.5 inch bracelet uses only 5 ft. for primary length and 4 feet for the secondary length cord. Quite a savings of 5 feet of cord. I am impressed. Good work !

    • @BuBea2010
      @BuBea2010 6 років тому

      triumphmanful 6ft-7ft would be all you need for your standard cobra variation knots, however getting into or attempting any new designs out there floating around will require 10ft+ each color/cord (normally includes the core) for 7in-8in wrist size. Thickness will always add more length. Test your lengths and record for the proper tension at the end. All these numbers you see are simply guidelines or suggestions. YOU decide the final length needed for your project. Use common sense and you'll never come up short or waste. Good luck and have fun cording or knotting.

      Yeah sorry about that. My computer died. And after 7 years I got a laptop. I'll try to see if I can pull the spreadsheet off the old hard drive. If I can I'll let you know. I'm in a better place now. I started this to occupy my time while looking after my wife of 23 years who was battling cancer. Unfortunately she did not make it. And after that, I kinda went away for some years. After 7 years, I've had a special person who helped me thru the pain and loneliness. I will try to get back to this and maybe post some new stuff. Thank you for asking about the spreadsheet. Thank you and have a good day .

    Hi Bowfinger, you know what else would be really helpful that I haven't been able to hit on yet? A formula to tell you exactly how much length you need to add to fit a certain size of wrist. My wrist is 6.5-7 inches, but the oatspike sinnet I wear measures out to be an 8 on my jig. Whereas a Portuguese Sinnet measures out to 7.5 on the jig. You always hear to add .75 to 1.25 blah blah. I think any tyer would agree that the better the fit, the happier the customer. Just a thought.

    You're very welcome, Brianna. I agree. Too much waste, can be a death kneel for a beginning Entrepreneur, as inventory costs eat into profit margins. say, you make 10 bracelets, using 10' of cord per bracelet, when you can make them using 8'. wasting 20' of cord. when you could have made an additional 2 1/2 bracelets. it can add up quickly. I will try to remember your suggestion in a future video, as the next one is almost done. Fishtail, dragons tongue, shark jaw bone, Aztec sun braid are in.

    Ok, I have a question about measuring for bigger projects. First off let me say that this video was very helpful. I screen-shotted the formulas so I could use them for reference. Thanks for that! I want to make a bow shoulder sling for my bow. I would like to use carabiners at each end. Slip the whole thing through the bow and clip the carabiner around the sling itself. This is just for carrying it. How do you figure out how much paracord to use if you want the sling to be 4 ft long when you are finished without a ton of waste? I'm content using the cobra weave because it's the one I am comfortable using. I have wrist slings that we bought, I will probably make my own. How do you attach the cords to the carabiners and not have the weave come loose? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!!

    yeah, could've used another 12" on the secondary :) (probably another 12" on the primary as well) maybe i should've taken my braiding strength into consideration. you did point it out on the video, and i think i might've subconsciously ignored it. Thanks for the formula, it did give me a base idea of the length i needed. keep up the good work.

    H ow would I calculate if i had a 8.4 wrist just saying

  • @Bowfinger6383
    @Bowfinger6383  11 років тому

    well, on this video, I was using 3/8" buckle ( the width of the buckle)
    these 4 formulas included the buckle( which was the 1 inch length that the buckle made when clasped). IE; a 7" bracelet was 6" of braiding PLUS the
    1 inch that the buckle made.
    What I did not take into account, was that different buckles have different lengths.
    All other videos will have the formulas made for finished braid length only.
    So yes, I would add other 1" - 1.5" to your Variable "Y"
    Thanks for that question.

      Not familiar with it, What type of knot is the Base? I:e Solomans bar, or catapiller braid,. If it's one of this listed. perhaps add 1.5" to the formula. example= instead of 4.5" per inch-per strand, make it 6" per inch.

  • @MunosGone

    I calculated it and it seems to work, given that I haven’t made a bracelet using this formula. Is the total of all of these in feet?

    • @Bowfinger6383
      @Bowfinger6383  10 місяців тому

      In inches.
      Say you're doing the Solomons bar
      (4.5inches of stand to make an 8 inch bracelet ) per cord/color.
      (4.5 × 8") + 8 = 44 inches or 3.6666667 feet.
      Measuring in inches is more accurate or at least easier.
      Hope that helps.

      uhm im trying to do a normal cobra weave :)
      so with wht i have computed, i need to add another 3 inch along with length i have computed with your formula?

    • @Bowfinger6383
      @Bowfinger6383  9 років тому

      Ok the cobra (reg.) uses about 4 & 1/2 inchs per color/strand, for every inch of finished braid, plus the length of the braid in your case six inches, so, IE:6 ". 4.5 x 6 + 6 equals 33 inches of each color, or 66 inches if using one whole strand, so just add 6 more inches ( 3 per 'loop' heck add a foot, then measure your drop if it's more then a foot left, the formula works for you, if less, then add a little more to the Multiplier ( the 4.5")
      this is a excel formula, put it in a cell, make the "y" the cell you enter your length.
      =sum(4.5 * y + y) remember, it is for one strand, in a two strand (normally) braid.

    • @Bowfinger6383
      @Bowfinger6383  8 років тому +1

      +Noah J which one? the "King" cobra.
      Or a double wide reg solomon's' bar interweave?
      The fat cobra that's starts out as a reg, then doubles back onto itself is the "king cobra"
      well. the first part does appy, but when going back over for the second pass, the formula won't work. since I've never done one, I can't give you a true number to use, but if you're willing to try:
      =SUM(4.5* Y + Y) +SUM ( 9 * Y ) per color/strand.
      let me know if it works, and how much it's over, or short, on a piece of how long. Thanks

    you know, I've never real done one, but, you might be the second pass will be thicker. So the per inch # will be off, so if you do it just doubled, you'll be short.
    Do the 1st pass as normal, but then add a second formula to it, but doubled the per inch. Like so. Y=10"
    =sum(4.5* x Y+Y) would give you 55"
    double that gives you 110"
    =sum(4.5 x Y+Y) + sum(9 x Y) would give you 145"
    this is just a theory,only gives a guess as how the core radius is multiplied,
    add 24" then cut & measure the drop

      I have one in theory, but not verified because I have not yet made the actual braid. to be verified, I first need to be able to make (3) attempts, and come within 3-5" of each other, without coming up short. if you wish to try- place this in an excel cell:
      =SUM(4.5*C53+C53)+SUM(9*C53)
      C53 being the cell number ( it can any cell # you make it to be) A1, B2, etc.
      It's still in experiment phase. if you do try it, I would love to know the results, thanks.

    How about cord lengths for 95 weight cord? Everybody uses 550, I need to figure out length for a solomon braid bracelet using 95 weight paracord. NOT braiding around a 550 strand like everyone else does, I hate that, actually braiding the bracelet.

      Hmm, a good question, the diameters will be different and therefore the maths will be different. A good way to get a idea is to use a known length, say 48" make the braid. Measure the finished part. Subtract the the remaining running ends. With that measurement, subtract the finished length, then divide the finished length. IE: starting with 48" get a finished piece of 5" with no leftover. (48-5)/5= 8.6"
      8.6 × 5 +5 = 48 inches

    I didn't see anything asked about your oak spike sennet bracelet formula. All your others had main color (I.e. caterpillar feet braid) as 8.5"xY+Y=? And secondary color as 2.8xY+3 (loop)=?
    But on the oak spike you have main color = 6.235"xY+3"=? And secondary color as 3.176"xY=?
    It's backwards from what your other formulas are and there's no "+Y" at the end of the 2nd color formula. Is the way you currently have in the video correct or is something missing?
    Thank you beyond all words for these videos because I'm on disability and don't sell my stuff so I end up paying for the cord and while I don't mind that as it's my hobby, it does make me sick when a video says "5' of each color used" when all you really needed was 3-4' so I wasted 1-1.5' of cord which is fine if I'm making paracord buddies but I don't do many of those and I'd rather have all those scraps in 1 long piece for more bracelets.
    So your video is a game changer for me. Thanks for doing these videos from all of us on a limited budget and all the people who can't stand waste :)

      Thanks for watching BanjoDoje. as per the " Oat spike sinnet" you are correct in ,that there is no (+Y) in that formula,because as you make this braid,it has no core strand to braid around,
      I.E: solomans bar has 2 core strands ( that is the (+Y) part.
      The primary color in this video is the yellow, since it is the predominate color and uses more then the black. the (+3) that is in the formula is that little loop that gets "cow-hitched" to the buckle at the beginning. be mindful, however, that while this formulas works really good for me, your results may vary, ( the tighter you make the braid-the less you use & vice versa). I would recommending adding at least 1 foot to the total length of each color when first doing it. so that you will be able to finish. thanks again, and have a great time braiding.

      Ahhhh, ok, thanks for explaining that! That answers a lot of questions that I'd had in regards to amount of cordage and why some took what seemed to be way less than what I thought it should. That's why. No core strand! Well, that cleared that up - I learned something today so I should be able to sleep tonight :) Thanks.

    I am making a pair of 8 foot reins. I did the math and got 144 feet. Does that sound correct?
    4.5(96+96)+4.5(96+96)
    4.5(192)+4.5(192)
    864+864
    1728in = 144 feet

      I think it should be 4.5(96)+96 + 4.5(96)+96 = 528 + 528 = 1056 in. = 88 ft.
