    It's the little details I love about history that tragically get blown over during US public education. The fact that Cornwallis wouldn't address the Americans, but Lafayette made his band play Yankee Doodle in response is so fucking badass I cant even comprehend.

      I agree with you it's the details that make history so interesting, I like the fact that Alexander Hamilton the play has ignited people's interest and what actually happened in our country's history.

      Cornwallis knew that Washington was going to claim the victory. It was a political victory rather than a military victory. The French knew which force had won the battle and so did Cornwallis. The French invited their fellow officer to their tent after the surrender and treated him with great respect and even offered to lend Cornwallis money to pay his troops. Washington was not invited. Ignored by American history was the plight of the American Loyalist 1000 strong and the numerous Americans who had changed sides. This occurred fairly often during the First American Civil War. The fate of the Black Loyalists is never mentioned either. Washington being a slave owner wished to have the captured Blacks returned to their " patriot" owners. The British troops were treated with honour but the American Loyalists and Freed Slaves not at all. Facts not fiction, please!

    In fact marching on Yorktown was Rochambeau's idea. He was the one who "sensed the opportunity". He sent for de Grasse's fleet in the Caribbean to come and block Chesapeake bay. Washington was against it but his officers convinced him it was a good plan.

      In addition to that correction, I wouldn't agree that "things were not going well" in 1781. Maybe not great for the "rebels", but Cormwallis lost 25% of his men at Guilford in March, and had all but conceded the southern theater by withdrawing from the Carolinas.

      @@BixbieMedia … thanks Beau. I’m just getting interested in this battle because Rodney had his fleet down here in the Caribbean islands, where I live. If Lord Rodney was not looting in St. Eustacius, to cut off arms shipments and gunpowder from the southern sailing route, he could have been in Yorktown with 10,000 sailors and 3,000 marines and at least 15 warships to block the French, right? That’s what I am beginning to learn.

      Washington was unsure about de grasses fleet coming. He didn't have the same Intel as rochambeau. Washington wanted to attack new york. Thankfully, Washington went south instead. As an American, I can't believe we don't talk about how grateful we should be for the French's aid. The battle of Yorktown consisted of more French fighters than American fighters

Rochambeau replied NO to a Washington unpleased but it was.... and the 7500 Rochambeau's troops + 3000'De Grasse Naval artillery'men joined the 9000 thousands patriots from Washington and Lafayette yet in Yorktown . The final act was a ' posting letter' as we said in french , an easy way to british surrender.

    I'm runnin' with the Sons of Liberty and I am lovin' it!
    See, that's what happens when you up against the ruffians
    We in the shit now, somebody gotta shovel it!
    Hercules Mulligan, I need no introduction
    When you knock me down I get the fuck back up again!
    Left! Right! Hold!
    Go!
    What! What! What!
    After a week of fighting, a young man in a red coat stands on a parapet
    We lower our guns as he frantically waves a white handkerchief
    And just like that, it's over, we tend to our wounded, we count our dead
    Black and white soldiers wonder alike if this really means freedom
    Not yet
    We negotiate the terms of surrender
    I see George Washington smile
    We escort their men out of Yorktown
    They stagger home single file
    Tens of thousands of people flood the streets
    There are screams and church bells ringing
    And as our fallen foes retreat
    I hear the drinking song they're singing
    The world turned upside down
    The world turned upside down
    The world turned upside down
    The world turned upside down
    Down, down, down, down
    Freedom for America, freedom for France!

    The problem it is that it begins by a counter-truth... Washington never wished to attack at Yorktown, the will of Washington was to attack New-York... Rochambeau which was a far better soldier and chief convinced him to change his plans due to the judicious position of the French fleet of Admiral De Grasse... in the cheasepeake Bey, the french fleet was keeping Cornwallis to receive reinforcements, especially after a decisive victory at sea against the Royal Navy, presumed then to be the best Navy in the world. it's typically anglo-saxon to change History facts... France and Spain, and even Netherlands, did more in US independence than US troops... It's France which has turned this independence war in a global conflict, using its diplomacy to involved its allies (Principally Spanish and Dutch)... USA was only one of the battlefields in that war. At Yorktown, french soldiers involved were outnumbering courageous americans by 2 to 1. French didn't do war only for the pretty eyes of Americans, they declared war to annoy British, to regain prestige and eventually to regain many of the losses of the seven years war... Yorktown was a french plan, done with french money and guns, with 2/3 of Frenchmen, with french fleet cutting all emergency retreat for Brits... Saying that Yorktown is an american victory is like saying DDay was a Canadian victory ! to make you comparison ! :)

    • @Meko5
      @Meko5 3 роки тому +1

      That's pretty much how I learned it back when I in gradeschool in the 90's. Nothing ever told me that it was primarily an American effort that won the Revolutionary War, but more of the French playing a huge part in precisely the way you mentioned it, essentially 'getting back' at England, but that doesn't mean the U.S. just sat on their hands through the entirety of it though.

    • @jpc7118
      @jpc7118 3 роки тому +1

      @@Meko5 I didn't say US minutemen and continental regular army had done nothing. They did the job, the best they can. I think just that without France, they would have not win in 1781 and obtained their independence in 1783. They possibly could obtain it after decades of civil war and it would have been a english decision to give up unilaterally : the english people would have been angry against this war, and despite british victories on the ground, politically, it would have a become a nightmare, just as France in Algeria : French army thrashed the algerian insurgents, but the power became so unsteady in France, Army was about to make a coup and put a military power, france decided to give independence AGAINST all prediction and against the result of the weapons (ALN was totally defeated, most of its leaders were in jail, in 1960-1962 period, the war on the field was won, there were only few terrorist attacks, most of the fights had been done in 1956-1957.)
      Then, I didn't tell it wasn't taught in Histry in school, but ALL of US medias and leaders minimise ALWAYS the french role. I have even seen an anniversary of Yorktown by an american president (Reagan) without any french official and in his speech, he didn't even mention France if I remember well. I regularly read NYT and Washington post, I regularly look at CNN, ABC and few other big american channels, on the social forum, most Americans minimise french action or even considere they had none. I have many american friends in Army (they all know our valor, as I know the valor of american men in arms), I've gone in USA for 2 weeks of vacation oin october 2003, in colorado, I have received a true bad reception by many civilians. Most of the crowd wherever I went were at best unfriendly and sometimes hostile or even agressive. Once the Sheriff came and fortunately, I had some american soldiers to expose the problem and defended me.
      I still love (not like) America, her action globally good towards my country (even if...), especially that it was GI's (and many other nationalities) which come a day in june 1944 to liberate my country and the western Europe, which permitted to not pass from nazis boots to soviet ones... But that doesn't mean we have to be vassal. can't we respect each other as countries (I mean UK, USA, france and few other democracies) like people of good will and good ideas and ideals ?
      French bashing is a reality and if you're honest, took time to speak with many of your american fellows, and despite the History you, they learnt in their youth, you will find many and maybe a majority to say that American independence was done by amricans only or only with little help by the french (occulting Spanish and Dutch action).

    Who really decided to move the battle to Yorktown ? Washington or Rochambeau ? I read in some books that it's was rochambeau's idea. (But in the end, it was clearly Washington's decision and responsibility.)

    • @christophergargaro959
      @christophergargaro959 4 роки тому +1

      That’s pretty much it. It would be very unfair to not give Rochambeau any credit for the move on Yorktown.
      The initial idea by many accounts was his, however you are correct in that the final decision to proceed was Washington’s. The French generals and troops aiding the colonists were explicitly told that the final ‘call’ for things resided with Washington.

  • @feldschlange
    @feldschlange 4 роки тому +3

    Except it wasn't rochambeau who took redoubt 9, but wilhelm von zweibrücken, who rushed the fortifications at the head of the regiment royal-deux ponts and was honored - alongside his brother who was colonel of the deux ponts - as heroes of yorktown. The regiment was given a captured british cannon as a present by washington and the two (german) officers were standing in the first line at the britis surrender, in recognition of their heroism. Wilhelms brother, christian von zweibrücken, also received the cincinattus medal.... Yorktown wasn't called "the german battle" for nothing.

    Ignores the entire southern campaign of 1781 ( Guilford Courthouse, the battle of Cowpens, Eutaw Springs, the Siege at Ninety-Six, etc., which forced Cornwallis to the peninsula at Yorktown ( it was hardly his first option). Other than that, I guess this is OK.

      Reading Through History
      well to this day I don't know if Clinton was purposely trying to abandon Cornwallis to be beseiged and surrender so he could have Cornwallis removed as a commander, they were rivals and didn't really like each other. My other theory is that Clinton feared that in sending troops to Cornwallis that he would be vulnerable to some attack on New York. Intelligence was not great at that time so they probably did not know how many troops the french and Americans sent to Yorktown.

    • @christophergargaro959

      Zyzor I don’t think Clinton purposely sabotaged Cornwallis because while you’re right they did not like each other, Clinton was still a British patriot dedicated to his country and cause.
      I think it was more your second point that Clinton thought sending reinforcements would both weaken his position in NY and be a potential bloodbath for his men so he decided why risk my valuable men and at the time the most important city in the colonies - especially for a guy he wasn’t a fan of like Cornwallis.
