Unfortunately, Bernadette was in the wrong role at the wrong time. LuPone is performing the 'Mother Courage' performance of her career. Love her or hate her, the performance is breathtaking. It just HAS to be preserved.
God...Ethel, Bette, Bernadette, Patti. What a legendary group of women. The beautiful thing is that every time someone performs this role, the world says that it can never be duplicated. But somehow, a new incredible female performer comes along and knocks Mama Rose out of the park. I can't wait to see the next Broadway diva to rock this role!
she mentions her mothers saying "I wish you would stop going from job to job" haha. Its a fantastic. I got it last week and started reading it a few days ago. Its wonderful
@AtLastOnTheGround I respectfully disagree. I feel that her BIG acting fits perfect for such a BIG character. Mama Rose and Eva Peron required that energy. I was not a huge fan of her Lovett but that was because I was not a fan of that production. Her Norma and Fantine were subtle though. She can do either- she just understands that this character needs that big hammy personality. In my opinion at least.
She starting to pronounce the consonants. I saw her live in 'Matters of the Heart'. She is an amazing vocalist. She filled the theater with 'Being Alive'. She's not the best with connecting with the audience but man oh man, that voice. Genius.
@AtLastOnTheGround You're insane--Lupone is RIVETING in person. I saw Gypsy with Bernadette Peters and Tyne Daly live, and while they were both great they didnt have the kind of fire Lupone has. If you havent seen this live you haven't seen it--the videos just don't do justice to how she can fill an entire stage.
I second this comment! Every time someone tries to tell me that Spring Awakening is "revolutionary" I tell them that that revolution ended over a hundred years ago.
It was average. I saw a gal do Annie Oakley in Carmel CA years ago- her name was Paulette Dittinger- she played the part of Annie & she was the best alto-belter I have ever seen in my life, & I am 60 now. I wonder where she is, because that little gal was a tank- Patti is good, but this gal was great.
It will be Audra McDonald. We'll have another Gypsy revival within 5 years, and Audra will be just the right age for the role (and by her own admission in an interview, she'll be "ready" by then).
UNTRUTH. They NEED to get FRESH REAL talent. They CAN make it- I LIVE HERE. They pay WAY too much for NAMES. There is PLENTY of talen out there. The theatres were paid for LONG ago, and have been here for DECADES.
@thomas14630 I didn't see her live in the role, but I've seen enough and heard enough to know that I do not like what she did with the character. I like to see actors playing human beings, not playing cartoons.
I'm Sorry but ... does nobody remember Bernadette Peters as Mama Rose only like 3 years before Patti??? I saw her and she was brilliant!! Don't think Patti ... as much as I love her ... is the end all be all when it comes to Mama Rose
Nope- Patti is good, but NOTHING compared to Paulette Anne Dittinger. I found her videos, she is JUST better than Patti LuPone. Patti is better as an actress, b/c her doing Roses Turn, she runs out of breath a lot. Pretty good though for an old heffer ;)
She's a wooden actress, and I think she has outlived her usefulness as far as theater goes. Big, over-the-top performances in the theater (like hers in GYPSY) went out of style in the late 60s. There is nothing human and realistic about her performances at all -- They are always histrionic and full of false theatrics. She's a well-trained singer, but her acting is hideous.
Patti LuPone is the best ever to play this role! The rest can all go home in shame!
Merman had a Stronger Voice.
Unfortunately, Bernadette was in the wrong role at the wrong time. LuPone is performing the 'Mother Courage' performance of her career. Love her or hate her, the performance is breathtaking. It just HAS to be preserved.
Loved her when she did Sweeney Todd in Concert as Mrs Lovett and i loved her in Gypsy (just saw it play) absolutely
amazing
The placement of goodBYE to blueberry PIE! WOW! And the surpise ending! NICE!

WHY is she so brilliant? i almost can't stand watching her because she radiates genius too brightly.
omg my goodness she is awesome. and a great singer! i loved how she performed this song
Thanks SO much for posting this - I was kicking myself for not setting my VCR!! Go see "Gypsy" - its AMAZING!!!

I saw this yesterday, Patti was beyond words!
I have to disagree.
im a HUGE patti fan. shes amazing.
i dont understand how this version could
be bad ? its truely amazing.
She starting to pronounce the consonants. I saw her live in 'Matters of the Heart'. She is an amazing vocalist. She filled the theater with 'Being Alive'. She's not the best with connecting with the audience but man oh man, that voice. Genius.
Wow. What a voice!
I would have LOVED to see Patti as Nellie Forbush!
much much thanks
she looks/sounds amazing!! I was missing the bowl cut, but she looks just divine here :)
"She thought I could be in a musical for *leans into Joy* NINEY FIIIIIVE YEEEEARS!!!!" - lmfao!!!
brillant. thanks for posting this!
They gave away a pair of tickets to everyone in the audience? Do they still do this?!?!?!?!
6:03 THAT POINT. SHE’S A FORCE OF NATURE.
currently doing Gypsy in our community. I am Louise. haha Loving it!

the queen of broadway
I
Yes, she is.
I went on like a tuesday night and it was PACKED, well at least all the expensive seats were packed, the cheap seats may not have been as full.
i absolutly love patti, love love love love her, but idk this preformance seems kinda rushed?
her best is the tony awards no dout though!
haha Barbra walters, "Mama Wose".

Excuse me. What is this person's workout routine?
@theatrecr8zy I totally agree. I think bernadette was just as phenomenal (and maybe a little better in my humble opinion)
I know, right?
I watched Oprah today and the creator of Glee compared Lea Michele who plays Rachel on Glee to a young Patti Lupone
Yall Suck.....Patti Is amazing.....as an actor you have to do what you feel.....Only Patti could fill the shoes of Mermann. Peters is amazing also!!!
oh Whoopie, it was written in 1891 and performed first in 1906... i forgive you.
Foe Museleaders, who are the other two in your top three?
@ErikAndersson I think it'll be Idina Menzel
+JaTaun Pratt I'm thinking Sutton Foster…she already KILLED another Ethel Merman role, Reno Sweeney…
+Ritz I didn't even think of Sutton...she can own this role.
It will be Audra McDonald. We'll have another Gypsy revival within 5 years, and Audra will be just the right age for the role (and by her own admission in an interview, she'll be "ready" by then).
@@chazsallen congrats on being entirely correct lol
So, you are FOR the closing DOWN of Broadway?? that in essense is what you are saying.
Yes, she is, whats your point? I have my freedom to like and dislike singers- I didnt say that Patti was bad, I have seen BETTER is all.
she is god :}
...She's Italian, not Jewish...
UNTRUTH. They NEED to get FRESH REAL talent. They CAN make it- I LIVE HERE. They pay WAY too much for NAMES. There is PLENTY of talen out there. The theatres were paid for LONG ago, and have been here for DECADES.
Barbara should never do an interview. She has no Broadway experience, the barest knowledge, and her voice just gets on my nerves.
@thomas14630

Sorry, ya'll... Ms. Midler was the best Rose, followed by Rosalind Russell. This rendition was subpar. And that's putting it nicely.
At least she acted. Patti screamed for two and a half hours every night and got a Tony for it.
Um...CRIMINAL...

Never really liked Gypsy. Just a few songs from it.
