Patti LuPone used to live in my building, a rent-controlled tenement on West 21st St in NYC, before she hit the big time. By the time I moved in in 1981, she was already successful so I never saw her, but the old-timers would brag "hey, that's Patti's apartment." Apparently she sublet it.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!! She is real and tells it like it is.An inspiration. She should be bottled and sent to all wannabees. She sings the definitive versions of so many songs.Long may she go on singing!!
I can watch and listen to Patti LuPone 24/7/365 and still want more! She is the MOST authentic Broadway Actress in history. I feel sad for those who have never had the privilege of seeing her on stage. She not only connects with the character, but she somehow manages to engage the audience in ways very few ever have, or ever will! A true legend!!!!!
I love her honesty in this interview. Ms LuPone truly is a great performer who knows her craft and has my undying respect and admiration. Thanks for posting this!
I am actually quite shocked how she bluntly admits she could not sing the part of Eva Peron.WOW. Whenever I hear the American Premiere Recording I hear a literal virtuoso ... a Master of her Craft. The way she breezed though it was amazing and even in grainy footage of her singing it on stage was outstanding. She captured the essence and power of Eva Peron. I know the role is hard to sing... typical Webber, where the singer is required to jump octaves... and many of the notes require the female singer to sing in chest/belt or mixed voice notes in higher registers... But Lupone definitely fooled me on this one. I still proclaim her the definite stage Eva Peron.
Yes she could get through the role however that is different to having all the gears locked in and it being a freer sing . The role is written badly and full of an almost inhuman amount of jumping around registers . Lupone refers to singing the role in Australia, which she describes as finally being able sing the role. I think she means that it was placed better and therefore was an easier sing .
i dont mean to be so off topic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I would love any assistance you can offer me!
@Kannon Bo i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Patti is such an amazing person. I want to work on Broadway one day and I am praying that I get to see her. Working with her would be incredible but seeing her and getting a picture would be amazing. She is such a versatile actress. Every role she plays is her own, whether its a new character or one that's existed for decades. Viva Lupone! :)
Basically, it is written in a really uncomfortable part of a womans vocal range. It's written almost entirely in the mix voice where your chest & head registers mix. The score called for the upper mix/almost head voice to be strong & powerful & almost operatic. As she said in the interview, it is a series of D, E, F & a couple of High G's & then it will drop rapidly to low E's. Also, the pace of the score. It's fast then slow & the melodies are constantly changing & it's all over the place.
PATTIE can take any Broadway musical roll, turn it around and make it her own. Does she surpass any actor who has played the roll before her? Damn straight! Just look at her Mama Rose in "GYPSY" ... ... nuff said!
Around the time of this interview (2003) there was a miniseries called "The Reagans," which chronicled the presidency of Republican hero Ronald Reagan. The movie was originally slated to air on CBS (network TV), but when conservatives objected to its portrayal of Reagan, CBS decided not to show it and instead it aired on Showtime (paid cable) where less people saw it. The controversy was that Republicans used intimidation tactics to suppress the movie, which some (like Patti) called censorship.
@@pAusten I agree that far-left liberals have gone mad censoring things they don't like within the past 5 years. That is why I stopped being a liberal; I consider myself a centrist now. As a proponent of the arts, I despise any attempt to squelch freedom of expression. In the past, it used to come from the right, but now it seems to be coming from the left.
It's amazing to hear that she struggled with the singing in Evita she sounded so secure on the cast album and when I saw in the role in 1980. (The greatest night of my life in the theater by the way) You would never in a million years suspect she was struggling.
When I see and hear 17:03 Patti sing “It doesn’t matter what those morons say…”, I get chills. That just nails the part for me. Nobody sang it like Patti.
She's one hell of a woman in every sense of the word. Barbra Streisand always talked about being an actress who sings but Patti Lupone actually walks the talk. What did Streisand do...The Main Event, Meet the Fockers. So much respect for Lupone. So much.
I get what Patti is saying about Les Mis. Although I have never had an experience being in a show that is so "perfect" I would not want to do another production of it, I have had the experience of watching a production like that. It was the 2013 revival of Pippin. After I saw it I said to myself that I never wanted to see another production of this show. I didn't want that experience to be tampered with.
James Winer I saw the original Les Mis in London about 6 months in and it was perfect. And she's exactly right about Broadway, which I saw early on as well, because it was good but not nearly as great as London. Though it wasn't all an imitation because they didn't do a lot of it with British accents and even the Thenardier and wife were played with American accents instead of Cockney, which was a very poor choice.
I read an interview where the writer described her mouth as being controlled by an invisible fish hook and that could not be more accurate. Her mouth is mesmerizing.
Hats off Patty.Your the tops.Oh heck! I knew this in 79 when my ex used to ask me " what do you see in her "? My answer was Heh this is a GREAT musical. Eva oops PATTI you say you hit the wall in EVITA. No wonder. You captured her totally. If she watched this interview,I know she is laughing her butt off and saying so you wanted to act like me.Well you got it.VIVA EVITA AND VIVA PATTI.Love ya both.
THIS! HER! THIS! I had the same escape on stage at 5 or 6 and was in the tri state area too. I left NY to study in Chicago? Why? Well there were no Jimmy awards or anything like that and my father had cancer and died when I was 10. Events shape lives and bring us opportunities or they don't. I never wanted to be in the box or up on the silver lining drive in screen. My Mom and step Dad, Acting school in Chicago, no one knew what to do with this gay youngest of five kid who could belt in that old school tradition kid with trauma and jokes and a healthy appetite for anything.. The microphones had just become permanent on BROADWAY. They didn't trickle down until the 90s.I was loud. I have a good heart. It is my mouth that is the problem or was it? Anyway, maybe I am a no talent Ox cause I have wasted my life. I too wonder if Che and Evita live close to each other in Litchfield or perhaps one in Westchester at an appropriate distance, and If rumors are true and this Goddess is living in NYC with Aubrey Plaza, oh hell. I was going to say if I don't get invited over for a Hot and Dirty or a spot of tea I am gonna give someone such a pinch! The elephant who really said that is in my room right now, but even if we don't mention him, my dream won't come true. SO I will say this; hearing about having a one to one and full eye contact with a mouse while climbing to your Rainbow High each night, killed me. I'm dead, but I am glad I lived long enough to see this interview and honesty. I want another twenty eight minutes and fifty eight seconds.
That was great. Oh, while I don’t fall asleep in a show, it can be a struggle for some. Remember, some people attending just flew across the globe to see a broadway show and have been up for many hours and fighting jet leg in a new time zone.

She is truthful in a world of falseness and lies. She is the genuine article on all fronts. I cherish her and her great talent.
How is it possible that I’m just as enthralled and enchanted, listening to this interview, as I would be seeing her on stage. She’s outstanding!! ❤

The best Eva and a terrific film and tv actress too ! Great voice too.
Love love the quality of this interview. SO much information and insight into the grueling world of the THEA-TAH!!

Eva Perone? Who did write this, Fethry Duck?
Its Eva Peron
