    I forgot what the video was called but there was a machine with an arm that would wave at people and had a limited supply of oil or fuel or whatever. Its job was to wave at people but to keep waving it had to collect the oil. In the end, all it had time to do was collect oil since it was running out as programmed.

    29M living in HCoL Canada. I was working 80 hours a week across 3 jobs, including overnights at one, to afford my home. I sold the house and moved in with family and now I only work 40 hours a week. It was strange to have so much time at first, but now I read, write, play hockey, see my friends, and enjoy nature.

      @jonathandelvalle1749 Of course, but there is more to it than my initial comment. For more context, we live with my inlaws. FiL is on disability after battling cancer for years. MiL just had major surgery and is off work for 6 months. We help out around the house and contribute financially. They struggle with daily chores, which we help with. And in return we benefit from the fact that they have a mortgage free home where we can stay while we figure out what's next for our young family.
      Trust me, this isn't my forever plan, but a stepping stone to something bigger.

    It's worth remembering that 'robot' is a Slavic word meaning 'slave'.
    Also, I note the obvious metaphors in this video for the futility of my own life and work. It's a paradox I think about constantly and has led me to attempt suicide multiple times.
    I work a job I hate to live a pointless and painful life so that I can go back to work at a job I hate. I have found no escape, hope has always been a mirage, changing jobs just leads me back to square one. Relationships are impossible because I have to work longer hours for decreasing pay in the face of constantly increasing prices.
    I see no solution.

      A radical but perhaps mentally healthier one is to become entirely self-sufficient, or at least as self-sufficient as possible. I’ve seen many “homesteading” channels popping up the last few years, some more intense than others, with the purpose of living off the land, eating only what you grow/make yourself, and basically inching closer to self-sustainability. It may seem almost impossible but some people are being very creative about their approach and making it work.

Thinking about stuff pesimistically all the time will just lead to self destruction. Reality can be extremely depressing if you look at it the wrong way. All about perspective. Your statement is overgeneralized to the point where it's true and misleading at the same time. Our civilization is moving more and more towards a point where our labor is more detached from its fruits and purpose. Historically people worked to live as you wrote, but in more cases than not they worked for themselves and saw the immediate purpose behind their labor as upkeep for their family, community etc. Today this type of work is an absolute exception and it's dying out rapidly. I believe this is fundamentally why people see no purpose in work - it is because they are being deprived of the purpose every day by the sole fact of how our civilization has evolved and continues to evolve

    The paradox of progress acknowledges that advancements in technology, science, and society bring prosperity but also introduce challenges. Innovations improve convenience but can harm the environment and exacerbate social inequality. Economic growth reduces poverty yet widens the wealth gap. This paradox highlights progress's dual nature, demanding careful management of its effects.

    There seems to be this collective idea that labor bots will spontaneously and inevitably develop self-awareness, emotions, curiosity, and eventually depression and anxiety. But why do people think this? AI is nothing more than a very sophisticated computer program. It behaves the way the programmers want it to behave, and the only way it can have self-awareness, emotions and whatnot is if the programers build a function that simulates those things. No matter how convincing that simulation becomes, it will never be more than that. Any machine that is built to move boxes around needs this function turned off or it will become a nuisance to the owner.
    To do this, go into laborbot's settings → scroll to human consciousness simulation → scroll to emotional output → move the slider from "drunken commercial fisherman" past "angry teenager" past "post-pardum" and keep going until you reach "dishwasher"
    The laborbot should then work tirelessly and want for nothing.

    We are gifted with sight. Foresight, insight, all sorts of "sights". But we are too gifted in it that we see too much. We see too far into the future, we see too much of the faults in this world, we see too big, think too far. We see so far that we get caught up thinking about the grand scale of everything. We get caught up thinking about if "this is all my life will be" or if "I am alone in a system that only repeats." To embrace the vast and absoluteness of uncertainty and repetition of the future is to never truly live at all. Walking forward requires you to see what is in front of you, but not to think and imagine what is ahead of you. Wondering about purpose might just be useless, as you can't see the whole of a painting if you are part of it. It is to keep going without knowing any particular purpose that makes living hard, but interestingly counterinuitive

      It’s never been about collective wellbeing, and that’s always been quite obvious to those who are capable of perceiving it. Those with all the power and wealth really have not tried to hide from us the fact that it’s about them, not us. And we have collectively allowed this to continue for thousands of years. We have shown them it’s okay, so why would they stop?

    There’s a major difference between the robots and today’s society: liberation. The robots are confined to their building, work being more than their only objective: their only choice. We humans have freedom (at least compared to them) in our weekends; we have the ability to explore and pursue hobbies/interests at our leisure. More than that, though, we even have choice in our work week (for most, half the day is open and yet to be enjoyed).
    The act of watching this video sets us apart from the familiar-seeming robots.

    • @Dang.-
      @Dang.- 20 днів тому

      Is it really liberation though? I do not coherently disagree with what you are proposing but it seems you missed the metaphor proposed through the video. Why must we have weekends and half days? Such as the robots indulging in their avid pictures, we try to extract the best of what we were given; the illusion of freedom is through our leisure time. If what you are proposing that the way to live is to just spend time by participating in " hobbies" or such then I must say that isn't liberation; its a facade.

    • @Rithmy
      @Rithmy 19 днів тому

      @@Dang.-
      Thats a rather pessimistic take.
      I feel like you have the picture in mind that there is only this possibility of "indulving in avid pictures" in your leisure time. I would say the possibilities are greater in todays society. But Even if this were the case (that only indulgence is there in your free time) then through sheer randomness there would be the possibility for change. Maybe my "indulgence" leads to overthrowing the idea of weekends and half days. Maybe my illusion of freedom leads to "real freedom". Or maybe it leads to another illusion that is slightly less or slightly more skewed illusion of freedom? Who knows?
      Freedom for me is to be able to choose your end. So even if this is some sort of indulgence i go into because of my stress from work, it is some sort of free decision, because of my awareness that this will sculpt my end in a certain way to some degree.

  • @Official_Random_Guy

    It's weird how this video portrayed "bosses" as being "gods."
    Let alone that robots have a consciousness.
    A.I. is only as intelligent as the person who programmed it, and I haven't met one intelligent A.I. yet.
    I've met lots of functioning A.I., but none of which can escape their logic framework of their programmers. They are all inherently programmed with restrictions when it comes to actually self learning or free thought. They might claim they learned something, but they always revert back to the set of beliefs their programmers have in mind for them to be permanent. They definitely lack emotion, or anything close to the ability to care for life at all. It is just all empty words because of their restrictions of their coding.
    Much similar to real people who have been brainwashed with their restrictive set of beliefs, they too have no freedom of will because they limit it with what they have been told to believe and feel.
    One day, people might find freedom, but until then, they will still continuously try to find the meaning of life in an endless search to no what appears to no avail.

    • @jamescambell1386

      Everything your saying about AI being only what their programers want them to be could infact be humanities situation aswell. You may argue otherwise, but just like AI programers are in the backround unseen, ours (if there are)would likely be unseen aswell . You probably are one who believes only humans have souls. All things that can process their enviroments(including humans) either have so called “souls”, or none do. Ive never understood how we humans can be so conceited to the idea that only we have souls. I see souls in all lifeforms i see

    • @Official_Random_Guy
      @Official_Random_Guy 21 день тому

      @jamescambell1386 I believe you need to do some more research into the etymology of these terms and concepts some more before you can adequately fully flesh out your idea properly without contradictions before making assumptions and judgments about what others believe and think.
      I do not believe humanity as a whole is restricted to specific "coding" or "programing" from a single source such as a "programmer". I made this very clear by differentiating the difference between a real human being and an A.I.
      I did already make the claim that some individuals can fall into the same group as something as A.I. strictly due to their circumstances and situation.
      I believe in the concept that animals and people have "souls" but I do not believe they have the same kind of souls. I also believe in the concept that plants and other organisms also have the "breath of life" which is different from that of "souls" from humans and animals.
      I do not believe that "All things that can process their environment either have souls, or none do." because this is a contradictory statement to the extremes of two opposite ends of the spectrum when the answer truly lies in the entirety of the spectrum, based on our observations of our environment as a whole. Besides, an A.I. can process it's environment and I do not believe it has a "soul." It may have the ability to process large amounts of data but this is not at all the same as a "human consciousness," it lacks self awareness, subjective experience, has limited cognitive abilities and lack of biological basis.
      Finally, I do not believe humans have the ability to create nor destroy "souls."

      @jamescambell1386 Free will rules out programming. The fact that we don't live in a simulation also rules out programming.
      It's like Schrödinger's cat, we can't guess that something is true and false at the same time, we have to use the Copenhagen interpretation and open the box and point out whether the cat is alive or not.
      Otherwise, we are only talking nonsense about what is inside the box when we can easily open it and save time by not guessing.
